j/c I've never been hired by a guy on unemployment. I have been hired by business owners - some of them extremely wealthy.
Why don't we do something to stimulate job growth instead of further rewarding those that are unemployed?
Why? Do you have a problem with 47% of the country supporting the other 53%? It's not their fault they are unemployed, and it's not fair that you have a home, TV, car, vacations, electricity, cell phone, cable, internet, and they suffer in mediocrity with just a TV, cell phone, cable and internet, and most probably have cigarettes and beer as well.
Exactly. Ever hear the saying if you give a man a fish, he can eat for a day, but teach him to fish, he can eat for a lifetime?
Ever hear the saying "you can't make a poor man rich by making a rich man poor?"
I know what you are saying.
I also know that if and when the tax hikes come, I'll be forced to cut back my spending in order to keep my home, and still have electricity and heat.
My cutbacks in spending will affect other businesses, which will in turn affect me.
Let's get back to sensible things here gov't. People need jobs, not handouts at the hands of the less than half of the population that pays taxes.

But do you honestly believe that the GOP is any better?
I know the common response there is that they're the lesser of two evils ... but that is a complete fallacy as well.
They're both equally incompetent, and neither does anything much different than the other.
So while I concur that the Democratic party is a joke ... why reserve the venom for one side? Is there a reasoning behind it, or is it just conditioned response?

Or you could just explain your views instead of resorting to thinly veiled, childish name calling. Do you really think using terms like Dumbocrat//Rebugnican really benefit anybody, or does it just deepen the already thick divide between ideologies?

I gave a detailed answer to that question in the dumbocrat thread.
Scrolled through the thread, and this is the most pertinent quote I could find --
Quote:
I agree to a point, but I think that two parties concerning themselves with their ideals vs. expending all of their resources on elections would be a healthy system of checks and balances. One thing you do see here is that the conservatives will call out republicans when they see something amiss, while the liberals refuse to say anything negative about democrats. The democrats are a much bigger part of the problem.
Now, I agree with you on the first sentence ... however, I find it flawed -- Democrats and Republicans do not have ideals. They are not liberal, nor are they conservative.
I know you say you find the Democrats extremely liberal ... and I just don't get that. What, exactly, has been liberal about this administration? The continued wars? The continued war policies? The funding of corporations with taxpayer dollars? The litany of tax credits?
I mean, go down the line and look at what Obama and the Democrats have done since they've been in office -- from the economy to wars, budgets, education, capital punishment, energy, faith-based initiatives, gay marriage, global AIDS issues, health care, middle-class tax cuts, offshore drilling, welfare reform ...
...when you look at it honestly and objectively, it mirrors not only the policies of Bush ... but also of Reagan.
Was Reagan extremely liberal in your view? IMO, no, but as I said, none of these folks are liberal or conservative. They are merely pro-re-election, and pro-donors. They wish to divert taxpayer money to whichever companies and entities they are most friendly with.
So, how exactly, in your mind are the Democrats the bigger part of the problem? The actions, legislation, bills, laws, etc. are extremely similar. There are very few differences ... what differences do you see that aren't based in hollow rhetoric? What has really changed since Obama took office that wasn't happening under the GOP watch to make them the bigger part of the problem?

j/c Where's mac when you need him? Perhaps he could explain this to all us "right wing nuts"? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100701/ap_on_bi_ge/us_unemployment_benefitsFrom the article: "The measure fell two votes short of the 60 needed to advance Wednesday night, but only because Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a supporter of the bill, voted "nay" to take a procedural step that would allow for a revote." So the senate majority leader - Harry Reid - voted against this - but it's the republicans that don't care? It's the democrats that care? For a procedural step? Those caring democrats.

I should have said "dems concern themselves with liberal ideals and republicans concern themselves with conservative ideals...." I agree that the republicans have really strayed from conservatism.
As far as the current administration, I find trying to tax and spend your way out of a financial mess extremely liberal. It's not just corporate America that's getting the cash, and their constant public bashing of all big business is a liberal trait . Their stance on just about every social issue is ultra-liberal.

even if it were $56 per employee annually being put into the system.. all those $56 add up to a big chunk that we are paying for..
This was said in regards to mac's attempt to paint unemployment taxes as $56 per employee per year. What he conventiently missed - in typical mac fashion - is the STATE unemployment 'insurance' tax.
That rate can be all over the board and is assessed on the first $9,000 of wages.
For certain employers, the rate can be extremely high...think 5-10%...or better.
So...if an employer has a 5% rate...which some would kill for...the cost is $450 per employee per year...plus the $56 to the fed 'insurance'.
If an employee quits in say...mid-year after earning $9,000...and the employer hires a replacement...guess what?
Another $450 + $56 in 'insurance' tax on the new guy. So that one position now costs $1,012 in 'insurance' tax. (450+56+450+56) ONE job...over $1,000 in 'insurance' tax.
Have you ever been hired in December - or heard of someone hired then - who was told they would start after the first of the year? The Company saves on the holiday "cost" but also saves $$$ on the fed and state 'insurance' tax.
For some employers and some positions...December becomes November...or October. It stifles hiring at any time of the year and moreso at the end of the year.
Just throwing that out there.

Most sensible people do not believe that.
What gets the attention of Republicans and/or conservatives is the constant droning-on by the Democrats stating that the R's are against the common man while the D's are the champion of the common man.
That...and the media's insistence on letting that lie live on

To that end, I do stand by my previous post, 110%. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

JC web page Pelosi: Unemployment Checks Fastest Way to Create Jobs Published July 01, 2010 Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. Talking to reporters, the House speaker was defending a jobless benefits extension against those who say it gives recipients little incentive to work. By her reasoning, those checks are helping give somebody a job. "It injects demand into the economy," Pelosi said, arguing that when families have money to spend it keeps the economy churning. "It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name." Pelosi said the aid has the "double benefit" of helping those who lost their jobs and acting as a "job creator" on the side. "It's impossible to think of a situation where we would have a country that would say we're not going to have unemployment benefits," Pelosi said. Democrats have been trying for more than a month to pass a bill extending jobless benefits to more than 1 million people. Currently, jobless benefits last nearly two years -- up to 26 weeks paid by state treasuries with federal help for up to an additional 73 weeks. Of course, those workers could be sending a lot more money into the economy if they had jobs since unemployment benefits generally do not cover the entire cost of lost wages. The counterintuitive statement drew jeers from Republicans, who claim Democrats can't figure out any way to tackle the economic slump that doesn't involve spending massive amounts of taxpayer money. "No plan to create jobs -- just more stimulus spending," House Republican Leader John Boehner said at a dueling press conference. Despite the wave of unemployment aid and stimulus spending dating back to the end of the Bush administration, the jobless rate is still hovering close to 10 percent. New figures out Thursday showed new jobless benefits claims rising for the second time in three weeks. Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., on Thursday called the newest extension plan "fiscal insanity" because it is not paid for and will only create future problems. "I support, and Republicans have supported, extending unemployment benefits, but we must not do so at a cost to the deficit, to the economy and to future generations. Our inability to get our fiscal house in order isn't just damaging future generations; it is wreaking havoc on jobs today," he said in a statement. Pelosi criticized Republicans Thursday, saying she's still optimistic the bill will pass though it failed again in the Senate Wednesday night. ______________ I'm at a loss of words for how stupid Pelosi is.

My thought it if those unemployment checks are big enough to pay your mortgage, utilities, car payment, credit card payment and still have money to go out to dinners, buy TVs, etc. Well then your getting too much and ripping off the tax payers.
So, I highly doubt those people on unemployment are having a big effect on consumerism short of the electric, gas and water companies profits, mortgage banks and grocery stores.

if my math is right,, that's $170,000 per person over three months or $13,076.92 per week... might this be unemployment for Investment bankers? Seriously, who else stands a chance to qualify for that amount
Just kidding,,,,,

Stabenow: Republicans in ‘Cynical Game’ to Crater Economy by Stopping Jobs Bill
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), whose state has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country, just held a conference call with reporters, in which she expressed her belief that Republicans have cynically joined together to stop the jobs bill, also known as the tax extenders package or H.R. 4213, to keep the unemployment situation bad, or possibly make it worse, for their own electoral gains in the fall.
Here is a flash transcript of some of her remarks:
On Republican obstruction:
It’s an extremely maddening and concerning time right now, and frankly we need your help. We’re in a situation where, after spending at least eight weeks on the floor trying to pass this jobs bill, which focuses on creating jobs as well as helping people … not one Republican is willing to help us stop this Republican filibuster.
We’ve spent a tremendous amount of time and discussions to get just one person to join us. And we don’t have that. So, we will be voting again today to stop the filibuster and we have every anticipation that we won’t have the votes.
It is very clear that the Republicans in the Senate want this economy to fail. They see that things are beginning to turn around. You know the numbers. When this president took office, we were losing 750,000 jobs a month. … Now we are gaining jobs. … Unfortunately, and cynically [on their part], in cynical political terms, it doesn’t serve them in terms of their elections if things are beginning to turn around.
I believe when you look at this bill, which is all paid for — we raised revenues to pay for it — the one piece that is technically not paid for [is the federal unemployment benefit extensions and] that is done in a way that we have always done it, … [those are] always categorized as an emergency. And, frankly, if 15 million people without jobs is not an emergency, I don’t know what is.
On who Republicans are helping:
When you look as well underneath they are protecting wealthy investors, corporations sending jobs overseas and big oil companies — because we have included provisions to close tax loopholes in each of those areas.
Republicans are standing with them at a time when we desperately need to keep this economic recovery going and we desperately need to help people who are hurt. In Michigan, it’s estimated that by the end of this month we’re going to have 87,400 who are going to lose help, temporary help, in their unemployment benefits, by the end of this month. That’s literally the difference between somebody keeping a roof over their head, food on the table and a little gas in the car to go look for work.
I’m frankly outraged about what has been happening.
On what will happen if the bill fails:
We will put this temporarily aside. We have no choice. We met every single objection, we’ve negotiated — we’ve tried to meet what we’re viewed as concerns on the other side. Every time we tried to do that they changed the concerns. We can come back to it in a moment’s notice. … [But] we will temporarily put it aside. We’re going to move on to another jobs bill, focused on small businesses.
On the impact of Republican intransigence:
They’re willing to take down the people of this country with them. Republicans are out of work too. There are Republicans’ and Democrats’ businesses that need the access to capital and [other provisions] in this bill.
On the White House’s involvement in pressing Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Olympia Snowe (Maine) and Scott Brown (Mass.), viewed as the most likely Republicans to switch:
They’re very strongly pushing to get this passed. The negotiations have been primarily been with senators at this point. But the president and the White House are on the phone multiple times a day with the [majority] leader Sen. [Max] Baucus (D-Mont.).
On what this augurs for future jobs bills:
This is an extremely bad sign, because, based on the inability to get at least one Republican — in the past, we’ve had the ability to work, certainly, with members of the Republican caucus and get people of good will, willing to negotiate. The fact that’s not happening now and everything seems to be turned over to [Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)], it appears that everybody in the Republican caucus has gone purely into election mode [before] the fall.
If they can stop the recovery from occurring, if they can create as much pain as possible, people will be angry and will not vote at all or will vote against those in the majority. This is a very cynical political strategy and I sure hope it doesn’t work.
On continuing to fight:
My hair is even redder than ever. This is about real people. This is not some political, cynical game here.

You know ..... I'm reading through this bill, and there is almost nothing about jobs .....
Maybe I'm just not that smart. Mac, please point out the jobs provisions in this bill. The bill is 110 pages long ... so the "jobs" part of a jobs bill should be overflowing.
Just quote exact sections directly related to jobs mac. There are like 80 sections and sub-sections ..... so please be specific as far as what relates directly to job creation. (You know ..... for those of us who are a little "slower")

I believe when you look at this bill, which is all paid for — we raised revenues to pay for it — the one piece that is technically not paid for [is the federal unemployment benefit extensions and]
Enough said. "the bill is paid for - "we" raised revenue to pay for it", and then " the one part that is technically not paid for" is the part the DAMN bill is named after!!!!!!!!!!
So, it's all paid for, or it's not all paid for? Which is it Debbie - or Mac - were you for it before you were against it?
And what "revenue" did gov't. raise to pay for the majority of the bill that has nothing to do with unemployment?
Any answers to these simple questions mac?
Or do we need to wait a few days for you to find another democrat that "speaks for the country", as you think this jerk did?

j/c Here is an interesting take on unemployment benefits: http://money.usnews.com/money/careers/ar...fits-again.htmlA couple of points that jumped out at me: Unemployment is thought to be a very effective form of stimulus. Since the unemployed still need to meet basic obligations, they usually spend the money right away. If you are going to do stimulus, this is where to start. Two numbers jumped out at me; 5 active job seekers for every job opening out there. Second, the private sector only added 80,000 jobs last month versus 9.2 million unemployed. Some have argued that we should end benefits, and people will find work. To me, if these data are correct, there just aren't enough jobs. Another point against the idea that in the absence of benefits, people will find jobs; people's whose unemployment ran out in June are dropping out of job searches (out of the labor force). This is what drove unemployment slightly down. This is not consistent with if we ended benefits, people will find work. JMO, but the only thing to do is to extend the benefits.

With all these American citizens looking for jobs, you'd think that our gov't would start actively be finding ways to deport illegal aliens out of the country that will open up jobs for these unemployed individuals.. But instead, they want to grant them amnesty, fight any state that wants to help deport illegal aliens and continue to throw money at those who don't have a job.
We can keep on extending these benefits, but at some point we need to just say no.. the people who have had 2 years to find something need to start expanding their search.. There is a reason why they are still unemployed after 2 years... it's not because there are no jobs out there.. it's because they want to be selective on where they want to work.

JMO, but illegal jobs aren't the equal of legal jobs (in a companies' eyes). We can free them up, but since a lot of them are under the table and much cheaper to companies, it doesn't automatically mean that the companies will fill the jobs with as many American workers.
Also, it's going to cost way more to deport all the illegals in this country than it would to just extend unemployment. I'm not saying illegals are doing the right thing by breaking our law, just that deporting them would be impractical as a job creation mechanism.

If there really are 5 active job seekers per job opening as the article says, how is it true that if we simply end unemployment, people will get jobs? Companies aren't going to hire 5 people to do the job of 1 out of the goodness of their hearts. I agree that benefits can't go on into infinity, but I don't see any other way out, at least for the immediate future.

I do not know all the facts about what jobs illegals do so I can not comment about this as a whole.
I do know that when I lived in Columbus a large amount of illegals were doing dry wall. I think those jobs could be filled by Americans or documented workers. I have also heard about many factories that hire illegals. Forcing them to hire legal workers would help as well. if they have to raise their pay to make them meet standards that would be great.

If there are 5 applicants for every job.. eventually, it is bound to happen that 1 of the 5 will get a job that has been on the unemployment roll for 2 years.. but the problem is what jobs are these 99 weekers been applying for?
As far as the illegal aliens go.. The problem is that without enforcement they will just continue to come over in droves... Give them amnesty and even more will come to expect the same deal years from now.. The problem is the gov't does not want to do much about it.. They did set up a voluntary E-Verify program but when a state tries to make that mandatory for all businesses they fight that as well.. and then the gov't cries that we need to extend unemployment benefits to our unemployed people but people are blocking it... Heck if the gov't wants to hand out money... then hire them to watch the border.. instead of just handing them free money.. Of course, some people may not want to watch over the border with our current situation with the drug cartels..
Our gov't simply cannot continue with this bandaid approach on a problem that needs stitches... eventually we will need to stop using bandaids and do more drastic things, but by that time we'd be broke from handing out bandaids...

I found real numbers, rather than quoting the earlier article. There are 3.1 million job openings, and 9.2 million unemployed. Not enough jobs. People can expand their search to any job out there anywhere in the country, but it still remains that there are not enough jobs for everyone.

I agree that it is a problem of enforcement. JMO, but I think things aren't being enforced b/c we have a huge deficit from reduced tax revenue from the recession. There are not enough funds to properly secure the border and rounding up and deporting illegals is pointless if the border isn't secure.

j/c Here's an idea....give businesses incentives to actually EXPAND and GROW instead of forcing us to downsize. HELP us and we can probably help others by creating jobs. Before long, there won't be any reason to have small businesses. They keep pushing us and pushing us and we'll all quit.

Sorry, you rich business owners don't deserve a break. This country is ran by small business owners. We would have an unemployment problem if each small businesses could afford to hire one employee. Giving you guys tax breaks makes more sense then the stimulus plans Washington comes up with.

That's gonna happen. We never have, and never will have, 0% unemployment.
9.2 Million unemployed. 307 million population.... that's roughly 3%. That's really not bad at all.

It's not out of the total population, b/c a large portion of the population is under 18 or over 65. It's a % of the total working population. 14.6 million unemployed out of roughly 153 million workers. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htmNote: I had to revise my earlier numbers, 14.6 million unemployed. (9.2 I quoted earlier was number on unemployment). I know we can never be at 0%, but I think economists say that somewhere around 5-6% unemployment is indicative of a mobile workforce and is actually healthy for the economy. Anything above that is not good.
