I dunno if anyone else here is a fan of this franchise but I'm beside myself waiting for it this fall. The Civilization games are more or less the reason I've stuck to PC gaming...
Anyone else a civ junkie?

I played Civ IV a decent amount. I am going to keep an eye on this for sure, what are the major upgrades/changes this time around?

From what I've seen thus far, pretty significant...
They've moved to a hex movement system. Tiles can only hold a limited amount of units, requiring you to actually construct fronts and whatnot. Ranged weaponry can attack from distances
That's just what I heard from my friend who was at E3... apparently, it looks really really good.

I got hooked on Civ2 and bought Civ3 as soon as it came out. I have played Civ3 a ridiculous amount since. I just got Civ4 for Christmas last year, but I can't really get into it for some reason. I still play Civ3 a couple of hours every week. I've seen the screenshots for Civ5, and they are stunning. I just hope the gameplay is as good as it's looks.

I was obsessed with Civ & Civ2... I would sit in front of my computer for 12-14 hours at a time and play. Civ3 & Civ4... I felt that they lost something, and I felt that the Culture win was too dominant. I also missed the cheesy cutscene where you periodically got to upgrade your palace chamber I'll almost certainly play Civ5, I may even try to get into the Beta. I'm more interested, however, in StarDock's quest to obtain the Intellectual Property rights to the Master of Orion series so that they can make MOO 4.

You know you can turn off the culture win right Purp?
I'd love to see an updated MOO.... the third one was super disappointing. Every once and awhile, I'l reinstall MOO2 on my computer and play for awhile. Although with its age and my comps speed, all the motion is ridiculously fast.

I freakin' love Civ. My wife, therefore, hates it. Her actual quote "I hate those Civilization games because I forget that I have a husband." lol I am really pumped for the one this fall. I really enjoy messing with things in the current game (I think I have Civ IV: Beyond the Sword). I like to do the right click thing (I think it's like ctrl+right click) on a distant continent and place like 500 barbarian infantrymen there in the 1200s, just to watch them destroy the civilizations. Or I'll just nuke nuke nuke for the heck of it. I need a little fun like that sometimes instead of always just trying to build the civilization. But, I will say that I agree with PPE. I miss that cheesy little cut where you can build your palace. I also miss being able to zoom in on your city to see the buildings, etc.

Oh, and I will also say that I am not ashamed to use cheat codes, worldbuilder, etc. I've played, certainly, where I don't modify anything and take my lumps with everyone else. But, I'd rather see all the features that the game has to offer. So, I'll give myself a few billion gold or modify the cities to install all the religions so no one else can discover them. Yeah, it's cheating, but it's pretty harmless, really. I don't do the multiplayer or anything like that, so I'm not hurting anyone. Plus, I love using my American military might to roll over the Zulu or Russians. There's something gratifying about a fully advanced Modern Armor crushing an English swordsman.

I am also a fan of cheat codes. Brings me back to the days when they could only be discovered looking in the back og game mags. Plus, its fun. I like being able to dominate sometimes.

I never got into the Civ series but loved the Age of Empires RTS, and would use cheat codes in a different manner.
I would play solo with 4-5 computer opponents set on harder play, then use the cheat codes for resources to build a fortress and wait for my enemy to see how long I can hold them off.

Do you have to have Windows 7 to play the new Civ?

I would doubt it... there is still a very large installed base of Windows XP users out there, so I would expect that XP will be the minimum OS for it.
For MOO... I'm currently looking into setting up a VMWare machine so that I can go back and play the original
"Galactic Civilizations" (by StarDock) is supposed to be the next best thing to MOO, and it's a modern game... but it isn't free.

I've owned Galactic Civ and it was pretty fun, but no where near as great as the Civ franchise. First, you get only a limited amount of buildings you can place on each planet. There is only 4 government types but the party system is cool and the ship building really makes the game.
I'm stoked for Civ 5, played the original 4 all the time.

Looks pretty good! I never owned Civ I, but I've played the other three pretty religiously. Easily one of my favorite game franchises. I thought C4 was great. I was never bothered with the Cultural wins, it was always the Space Station wins that annoyed me. Turned those off, and it was a pretty fun time. A real fun challenge is to play "Once City Challenge" on Diety mode. If you play a normal sized map, with the max number of Civs, you can actually get a bit of an advantage since most of the other Civs can't build more than one or two cities. Stack your city with all the national wonders, make a permenant ally with one of the top other civs, and watch your 1-tank-a-turn war machine steamroll everyone else on the map for a Diety win.

I'm really excited about Civ5 coming out myself. I never played Civ 1-3 but I used to play Age of Empires II and III all the time until one day a friend showed me Civ4. I was instantly hooked and played it pretty religiously.
In the past few months I actually got it back out and started playing some of the mods that the community created for it and they're pretty amazing. My 2 favorites are Rise of Mankind and Fall from Heaven (and its little expansion pack Fall Further). They gave the game a nice little twist for me and was keeping me pretty busy for awhile.

At worst, I'd bet that Mac's will be able to run it under Bootcamp or some similar virtual environment.

Im still playing Civ 3 gold here and there. I tried the Civ 4 but I just never really liked it very much. It really irked me that in civ 4 you couldnt march your army through another countries territory without declaring war.

You could, you just needed to sign an open borders pact first. Which was usually pretty easy to get them to agree to.

I think he means he couldn't stack your armies next to the city, declare war, and then conquor them all in one fell swoop.

Anyone getting Civ 5? I think it comes out tomorrow. I don't know how I've refrained from pre-ordering it.

I intended to, but then work decided 40 hours wasn't enough and added 16 more to my schedule, on top of full time school. I know how addicting Civ is and I know if I bought it I would get even less sleep than I'm currently getting. Have to wait a little while, maybe Thanksgiving break I'll pick it up

It's out right now (released 09/21).
I'm glad I didn't get it. I wouldn't be getting much done for the rest of the week (or month), and I have stuff that I need to get done.

I am friends with Civ 5 on facebook, and they've posted a ton of positive reviews. Well, not like they're going to post negative ones.
But, it seems that it's been well received.

So is this game a good one to get? I loved Age of Empires back in the day and would like to get back into it -- so AOE or Civ? Just going to play the latest release of one of them, just not sure at this point.
Thanks

I know I loved Civ IV. I will definitely get Civ V, but can't say for sure how great it is or not just since I haven't played it.

As a fan of both ... I'd have to say Civ by miles. Nice thing too about Civ is that it's turn based, so you can sort of take your time figuring out your decisions ... and one bad call can effect you 100 years down the road. Especially if you opt for a wonder instead of added defense units.
AOE is more about skill with multi-tasking, and falls in-line with most Strat type games. The strategies usually don't vary much and there's only one way to win. Civ is nice in that you can "win" in several different way, and can take a completely different strategy to winning, based on starting location/civilation type/and numerous other factors. You can throw out offensive units early and streamroll to a win in one game ... yet try it the next time, and you might find yourself repelled, and your technology years behind someone else. It's the ultimate "thinking" game.

I broke down and got it this morning, only played it for an hour but I came away very impressed. I especially like the fact that the options for games are very deep this time around letting you control just about everything. Gameplay is a tiny bit different than Civ4 but very smooth and a little bit easier to figure out with a lot of helpful advice early on (I guess geared towards people who never played the other Civ games).
If you get it from Wal-Mart you get a special Americas map pack too, which is what I got. Different retailers are giving different map packs so take that into account when you buy it. I don't remember which is which except Wal-Mart but there are several to choose from and I think the info is available on Civ5's website.

I'm thinking about getting it. I never playd any civ game before. I was always a bit more into RTS games like command and conquer over the turn based games, but the total war series changed that. Plus the run and gun style of RTS is starting to bore me. Only thing keeping from getting this right now is the fact that final fantasy 14 comes out this week and I think that is going to win me over first.

Yeah, I'm interested too. I read a review that said it was good, but not quiet as good as Civ 4. It seemed like too much emphasis was put on military strats, and it was almost impossible to win via other means. You also couldn't unit stack like you could in the past (which they though was a plus, yet I almost feel is a minus) ... I also wasn't crazy about the hexagonal look, but I figure I'll buy eventually at some point. Wanted to get a few more opinions on it from people after the "new toy" effect wears off.

I've never played any previous civ games, but from what I've heard you could just build an army of death and destroy everything with unit stacking. In civ5, you are just forced to put a little more thought into what units you build and consider movements a little more carefully. The hex look is just one view, there is also a normal view without the hex grid.
