interesting read for you guys. not bashing foxsports, though john stewart shows some ridiculous excerpts from their shows, in particular some dumb blonde and another idiot who wanted to "talk to the robots to find out what they were thinking" when a robot knocked off a cap from the oil spill.

just some info and noting probably many graphs from many sources could be misleading in the political media world.

What do you mean wrong? Nothing can be wrong that is wrote, sketched or put upon the mighty chalkboards of Glenn Beck. Soon enough he's going to realize we all are headed to a nuclear holocaust led by the Czars and Socialists while China is about to take over

Durbin seeks carp czar
Senator says massive effort to keep invasive species out of Great Lakes needs federal oversight
June 25, 2010|By Joel Hood, Tribune reporter

As concerns mount about the presence of Asian carp near Lake Michigan, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin on Friday urged President Obama to appoint a carp czar to oversee efforts to keep the invasive species out of the Great Lakes.

"We need to have one person who coordinates the efforts of the federal, state and local agencies that are doing everything they can to keep the Asian carp out of Lake Michigan," Durbin said during a news conference at the Shedd Aquarium. "We believe it's absolutely essential."

Durbin was responding to the discovery of a bighead carp, a variety of Asian carp, during routine sampling this week in Lake Calumet, just six miles from Lake Michigan. Standing beside environmental advocates who have championed closing Chicago-area locks as a way to prevent carp from entering Lake Michigan, Durbin called the finding a possible "game changer" and said "we have to take it very seriously."

Your mention of "czars" just made me think of it..

Sounds like a ploy to get a job for a friend that involves fishing all day.

I'm sick of all of the "czars"... freaking Russia doesn't even have czars anymore, they killed all of theirs.

15 Topless Dancers Facing Exposure Charges

Images: Topless Dancers Arrested After 6-Month Investigation
Posted: 11:42 am EDT June 18, 2010
Updated: 8:55 am EDT June 21, 2010

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Six women have been arrested and authorities said they are searching for 9 others as part of an investigation of indecent exposure at eight strip clubs in Mecklenburg County.

Mecklenburg County Alcohol Beverage Control Commission officials and officers from the Pineville Police Department completed the undercover compliance investigation over a six-month period. It included Crazy Horse, the Paper Doll Lounge, Gentlemen’s Club, Gold Club, Uptown Cabaret, Leather & Lace South, Leather & Lace North and Baby Dolls.

ABC officials said the topless dancers are charged with violating a state law that prohibits them from performing nude.

Six women have been arrested and charged with indecent exposure: Christina Pierce, from the Gentleman's Club, Brittney Delcont, from the Paper Doll Lounge, Jessica Smith, from the Paper Doll Lounge, Amanda Ammon, from Crazy Horse, Rebecca Kirkpatrick, from Crazy Horse, and Robin Brown from Baby Dolls.

There are outstanding arrest warrants for 9 other women facing indecent exposure charges.

Michael Crowley from the Mecklenburg ABC Commission said the women removed all of their clothes during table dances on the main floor and in semi-private areas, roped off for customers who pay extra for special dances. State law prohibits them from removing their bottoms.

The clubs could face disciplinary action by the state ABC Commission, which controls licensing for businesses that sell alcohol.

For 6 months we are going to pay you (and all of your expenses) to go around getting lap dances to see if any of the strippers takes off too much... "Uh, yea honey, sorry. I have to work late again."

Yeah ... SIX month investigation to nab six people.

Hey now, they nabbed 6 but they are still looking for 9 more..

A 6 month investigation which probably cost well into the six figures to conduct and will ultimately cost at least that much again to prosecute... all so some lap dancers in the backroom don't show a little hoochie.... seems like a wise use of state funds to me.

Yeah, bet the 6 listed start charging a premium for dances. You know how premium brands always cost more.

Yes graphs are often misleading or designed to "highlight" a specific trend. This on, frankly, is not even that bad. The first criticism that was mad was about not starting the Y axis at zero. That is not an error, you would have to go to the beginning of time and prior to Adam and Eve for that (since they effectively put the unemployment rate at two). Non linear data is dubious, but done all the time. There is little advantage or disadvantage to the graph in this case, it would just have made a more choppy graph. Naming the graph losses by quarter is somewhat in error. Maybe it should have been total jobless by quarter, that may have been done for shock value.

Graphs you really need to look out for are the type that portray a specific data set as something else.

No - that's not right...they just mean that you should so the y-axis all the way down to 0 - so that you can better judge the percentage change in the data.........

Not really - at least, not without showing a broken line graph - or using another time scale (logarithmic or something similar)

Even considering that - the plot is entirely wrong - there is no linear trend in the actual data...the x-axis was just entirely made up so that you could pretend like there was one.

I don't disagree with you at all really, my point is that all it did was shift data slightly to make a straight line. Id didn't really misrepresent, in fact the actual graph was far more scary from that perspective (and also not zeroed on the Y).

If it came from media matters then you will get the worst possible spin. I do watch for these kind of articles about Fox News since it is on as background noise when I'm home during the day.

I can say that even during the daytime some shows are slanted. Fox and Friends in the morning is very bad. However, the news shows during the day are very good, especially Megyn Kelly. She will take everyone on. I couldn't tell you if Sheppard Smith is on the right in his personal beliefs. He does interject personal thoughts at times during his 3 pm show. I haven't heard him do it during his 7pm news hour. however, I rarely watch him anymore since by 3pm I can find some good shows on TV.

A quick scan of their other articles and breaking media stories shows that media doesn't really matter to them.. only conservative media matters to them since that is the only kind they look into.. they are no better than Fox News as it relates to objectivity.

It's not the best graph but, in the words of mac, everybody does it (manipulates the parameters of a graph to make it look better or worse depending on the point you hope to convey).. so why does it matter? Do I have to find a MSDNC graph that is distorted to prove that everybody does it?

Stop stripper persecution!

Seriously though ..... aren't there more important crimes to prosecute?

MSNBC is my all time favorite for being bias.. Fox comes in as a tie. Neither network would know the WHOLE truth if it reached up and bit them on the butt

If they keep us divided they can continue to pull that wool over our eyes and do as they please while we fight amongst each other.

It's an ancient diversionary war tactic.

I try to get news from a variety of sources and FOX is pretty notorious for doing stuff like this. Here's a pretty humorous and probably ill-conceived one: http://mediamatters.org/research/200807020002

Quote:

Fox News featured photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe that appeared to have been digitally altered -- the journalists' teeth had been yellowed, their facial features exaggerated, and portions of Reddicliffe's hair moved further back on his head.

they are interesting and seem to try to stay away from major bias (reason for their 2009 pulitzer).

the only problem I have with them is that people are too quick to judge arguments when citing them based on their 'truth meter'

a politician will use hyperbole and they will mark it 'false' though the basis of what was said was true and the stupid politician trying to make a grand stand because politicians like to get into the news.
