Quote: I was about the only person on this board who believed in the guy. Boy do I have egg on my face right now.
I believed in him too. And defended him. I really couldn't believe that him knowing our sports history, he would leave in this manner, sticking it to us on national TV.
And I was wrong to believe in him. Gilbert basically said everything I was feeling. So I have some egg on my face too.
What LBJ doesn't realize now is that no matter how many titles he wins, he'll always be a guy who backed out of his home state. One NBA title in Cleveland would have meant far more than three titles in Miami. Maybe, down the road he will see.
It's karma you know down the road Cleveland will get there's and LeBron will get his for this. Not for nothing blessing in disguise. We now have the opportunity to build this team the RIGHT way. Not held HOSTAGE by 1 player, pulling all the strings. Watch in 5 years we will be contending again. If success starts from the top we are in good shape. We have an owner with passion and deep pockets. We will be contenders again and have no doubts about it we will get our revenge on that traitor!!!!!
Quote: We now have the opportunity to build this team the RIGHT way.
I appreciate the enthusiasm, but Gilbert is not the type to build this the right way (ala Blazers and Thunder). he's too much Jerry Jones, Daniel Snyder, Mark Cuban.
too much flash...not enough patience. but, at least it'll be entertaining building teams to specifically try to derail the Heat and not care about anyone else.
Al Jefferson and Johnny Flynn might be a good start at that.
Quote: yeah I like toews better, also. Kane is a kid who can't pay a $3 cab bill. congrats to Hawks fans for the Cup BTW.
my whole thing out of that and i can't believe nobody ever made light out of the fact that he complained aobut his change, what about the tip? no tip? that's pretty low
I hope we decide to tank, this kid could be the next Kevin Durant
He's a 6'11 230 wing player with a 7’2.5” wingspan. He's quick as hell, great dribbler and he can nail the 3. His only flaw is that he tries to do to much and needs to increase his basketball IQ.
Well, now that that punk is gone "ring chasing" even though he said he'd never do that.......the law of averages says one of the Cleveland teams will bubble up in the Cavs place. Usually one is a contender. And I don't see the Indians going on a 25-game win streak any time soon.
Gooo Browns!
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”
Long time lurker, first time poster. This outrageous spectacle was simply too much for me to watch in silence.
I know many in the national media (particularly the LeBron apologists at ESPN) will criticize Gilbert for being unprofessional, and to some extent that's probably true, but I have to say I love this letter. As a Browns and Indians fan who rarely tunes into the NBA, I have to say that rare display of honesty and and fan-style passion from the ranks of owners who all too often are accused of caring only about the bottom line is refreshing. His unbridled and raw enthusiasm has actually made me more interested in rooting for the Cavs than LeBron James ever did. While I realize his guarantee will likely not come to fruition, it's heartening to see the organization isn't going to take this lying down.
i think the gilbert thing is a little too much, but i totally understand. how would you feel if something you had invested in was gonna be cut in half by value?
if it's true that lbj didn';t even let the cavs know up until this show, not even a call beforehand to show some kind of gesture, that's, well, i don't even know what to say.
this guy changed man, this just ain't the guy we've known all the years, he's become terrell owens only not as flamboyant.
it's everybody's fault but his because the cavs didn't win a champhip while he graced us with his presence.
See...I don't think he was ever that "nice guy" who cared about his town or loyalty. He's always been this guy......his "brand" was really good at covering up who he really was. Wade, Bosh, and lebron have been planning this for a long time, they admitted as much. And then Lebron goes on Larry King and says we have the edge....and then goes out of his way to create a "gotcha" moment for all his hometown fans. Cold.
Karma will get him.
OR....he'll win ring after ring and the city of Cleveland will fall further into despair.
I hope it's not the latter.
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”
I second the screen name Dan Gilbert. I think you couldn't pick a better one........the guy made me proud tonight. yeah maybe it was unprofessional, but I love it.
You're right. I think this guy has totally lost touch with reality. That he didn't give his employer of seven years and hometown franchise the courtesy of a phone call is one thing. That he (or his crew) conceived of an hour-long live TV special called "The Decision" in which he announces he's leaving his hometown team for greener pastures is a whole different level of egomania. How did James, or anybody close to James for that matter, not understand the kind of negative impact this process would have on his beloved "brand?" It's mind-boggling.
This guy went from face to heel in a matter of a few days. Sure, ESPN is the lovefest it always is for big stars, but every sports writer in the country is taking aim at this guy tomorrow morning. Even Barkley is all over him on NBATV. I think he's lived in a bubble for too long and grossly underestimated the kind of backlash that's coming his way.
i've read a bunch of articles and i haven't seen one guy actually take his side. they all kinda have that cowardly-feel to them. everyone is thinking the same thing.
#6 never had the heart for the city. He's a bandwagon sports fan. And he'll never have that killer instinct that is desired from a true competitor. It's the reason why he's jumped on the bandwagon here. He knows that he can't win and be in the spotlight. The only time he ever did, he was physically more dominant than everyone else on the court. It's like playing madden on easy.
The worst part of all of this is that I feel sick. I feel dirty. He practically had a whole city groveling at his feet, campaigning, almost to the point of worship. Almost elevating this man child to near god status. Only to take it, spit in the face of those who supported him and wipe his ass with the rest of the city in a charade called "The Decision". #6 is nothing but a media whore who can't win without his friends.
the great thing is, lbj is gonna be mad about the comments dan gilbert made, and that cleveland fans are obviously making everywhere, and he can't do anything about it.
sure, dan gilbert said he guarantees the cavs win before lbj does, and we all know that probably isn't true.
but lbj can't win a title and shove it down our throats.
if he wins, who cares? what will it mean? you won with wade and bosh? oooh wow. takes a man.
i really suggest the fans coming together and making sure that building is empty when the heat walk onto that floor in their one or two visits to cleveland, and shame on espn for showing it because you know it will be the one national game televised for the cavs. that will send a message. not booing, not saying lbj sucks, not chanting anything, just don't even go. seriously. that sends a bigger message than any name you could ever call him.
why do i feel like gloria, and savannah, and even maverick are all totally against this?
Quote: i think the gilbert thing is a little too much, but i totally understand. how would you feel if something you had invested in was gonna be cut in half by value?
I don't know if it's the value that set him off....I mean, it's still a pro sports team. By default it's worth 300 million and by all accounts, Gilbert's worth approaches 1 billion dollars. He's not exactly hard off for cash. I think it's more so the manner in which this all unraveled.
Gilbert spent millions of dollars to keep ONE player happy, making moves that were pushed (in many cases) only by him (LeBron). He spent for the present and not for the future. In a cost cutting city, he rolled the dice for better or worse.
If nothing else, I have to applaud him. There are very few owners who have the courage to spend that kind of cash. After operating expenses, luxury tax bills, etc., etc., the Cavs were essentially breaking even. Dan Gilbert ran a sports team the way a fan (and not a business owner) would run it. As someone who follows a team, what else can you ask for?
So it didn't work. Not everything in life does.....but my gut tells me if the roles were reversed and Cleveland had all the cap space (and 4 years of losing) that LeBron would have found a reason to leave anyway. He seemed to not want the city's championship albatross around his neck. The Cavs went all in and just couldn't get over the hump. That had a hell of a lot more to do with LeBron's play against Boston than it did with how Gilbert ran the team.
While the rant will surely be spun as misguided by most of the national media, Dan Gilbert isn't running for president of the United States. He's trying to assure a broken city the he, unlike LeBron, is not giving up on them. Who gives a damn what other people around the country think. He's trying to give Cleveland fans something to believe in. For that, I gotta applaud him.
I think the best way to go about the whole "Not show up at the Q" thing would be to sell it out first.
Think about it. BSPN hypes it up as whatever they want as long as they get to molest the Heat. It looks good on paper as "OMG, it's sold out" but then everyone just stands around the parking lot and refuses to go in.
I for one would gladly pay for a ticket and not show up. Dan Gilbert still needs the cash for the night. BSPN couldn't spin it that that Cavs fans are classless for not supporting their team either.
Option two would be to show up enmasse with T-Shirts that say "D-West F&@#D your mom"
"They drank some wine and he p****d gold on her too".

I hope it's not the latter.
I don't know that James was anything but what we saw over the years. He was a great player who wasn't in love with Cleveland. Loyalty to the city was never there to begin with. He made that CRYSTAL CLEAR when wearing Yankees and Cowboys gear. I don't blame him for wanting to take the best chance at winning. I certainly don't believe some of the articles that state he's afraid he can't win on his own so he had to play with Wade and Bosh. All it comes down to is a guy who is more selfish and lacking in loyalty and maturity than we believed. We ALL saw that he quit during the playoffs. We ALL saw the hats on his head that weren't Indians or Browns colors.
Unfortunately, we've now seen that James just didn't care about respecting Cleveland, so he didn't show any.
I cannot WAIT to see what stories come out. As good as he's been, I've never been a James fan. I always felt he wasn't the hero that many thought he was.
I totally understand why he went to play in Miami. I very well may have done the same. Yet the one thing I WOULDN'T have done was to stick it to the city of Cleveland in this manner.
Never being a big James fan makes it very easy to cut the cord and root against him.
As for Gilbert, man, I like the guy's fire. The letter was in bad taste for it's vehemence, but I dig it for the heart Gilbert shows. I'm just waiting until the stories come out............
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
I hope that this makes the city of Cleveland hunker down, realize that in terms of the rest of the USA it truly is us vs. them and decide to stick a big middle finger up to the media that will contnue to degrade Gilberts reaction, the fans reaction and push the agenda of how horrible Cleveland is. I love that some follks are saying that we are coming off as insecure, immature, unprofessional and undeserving. What the hell do they think would be going on in any other major market if this were to happen? Just last year, didn't the folks of Green Bay go ape over Farve going to Minny? But they get a pass because it wasn't drug out and eclipse all other things going on in the world at the time. Amazing that the oil spill has been pushed to the back pages since this whole fiasco started last week, huh?
It's a shame that ESPN went all in on this and decided to help throw not just Cleveland, but NY,NJ and Chicago under the bus as well. I seriously doubt they care, but I can only imagine the vitriol they will soon get nationwide. They have lost all of my patronage, aside from if any of the Cleve teams are playing on thier station. I wish I could say I'm shocked at the way they portrayed Cleveland throughout this, but I honestly can't. The bias they showed has been too much for me and I will gladly not buy into any more of the garbage they spew.
As for LeBron, I hope that he soon realizes the gravity of what he has done. Never forget NEO what he has done/created this night. He is now a man with no true home, a virtual island of a man. There will be no shelter here. He chose to pick up the black hat and take up the role of villian. For a self professed Jay-Z fan, 2Pac would have been more fitting, for wasn't it he who rapped "All Eyez On Me"? LeBron Jr and Bryce will never know Akron or Cleveland as their father did. Those within his inner circle must look at thier hands and see if they can wash them clean, as well. I hope that the thirty peices of silver were worth it. An entire state now sags with the shattered dreams shallowly promised by a sadly unprepared and unsure young want to be king. My heart goes out to the folks whose livelihood depended on the triumphant nights at the Q.
Finally, what culpability will David Stern bear in this? After all, it was under his watch that the rise of the individual above team came to prominence. He created the perfect little monster only to watch in horror as it revolted and ran amok. How can the NBA be taken seriously when teams purposely tank their seasons and shed payroll with little or no repercussions? How can the NBA, knowing that a few teams needed just that extra bit of wiggle room, RAISE the cap two million more after talks of shrinking it all year? How can the owners and GMs allow the garbage trades to happen knowing that all they will net is a super team in a year or two? How can the owners stand by and allow this blatant case of collusion go by untested? Most importantly of all, how can the players and thier union be taken seriously when three boys eat up almost 95% of a salary cap, yet somehow they will be able to fill the remainder of the roster, possibly with other average players? The NBA will have a hard time selling itself to the fans next year with either side when the inevitable lockout occurs.
I hope that LeBron realizes that karma is real, and possibly this is the penultimate item that reverses the curse of Colavito and finally lifts the clouds from Cleveland. Best of luck in South Beach, and thanks for confirming what we Clevelanders had feared all along, you were never the player you advertised yourself as.
"If you need two yards, I'll get you two yards. If you need four yards, I'll get you two yards!" Ron Wolfley, Special Teams Madman
I am like you toad as I never really felt that attached to Lebron, however, because of the Browns I am a Cleveland Fan. LeBron was a front runner his entire life Yankees, Cowboys..etc no need for him to stop being one now. I don't care about the decision but I do care how the city of Cleveland was treated throughout this entire debacle.
I cannot wait for the stories to come out. I honestly do not think Lebron has or can fathom the amount of hate that will reign down upon him. He will no longer be cheered everywhere he goes. Chicago hates him, New York hates him, New Jersey hates him, Cleveland hates him...etc. The only friendly city he will play in will be Miami. I honestly think Lebron has no idea how tarnished his image/brand has become. From the meetings he had with NBA execs it sounds like that he and his crew didn't fully understand what they were doing.
Everybody likes underdogs and hometown heroes and that made Lebron a feel good story. Hometown kid playing for his hometown team and trying to win for an underdog city. This decision changed everything.
I find it hard to believe the Browns now have the best chance to bring home a championship to Cleveland.
