Raptors outbid Cavs for Matt Barnes

CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers aren't exactly negotiating from a position of strength in talks with free agents at the moment. The results are showing it.

Forward Matt Barnes turned down a multi-year offer from the Cavs on Monday and instead agreed in principle to a deal with the Toronto Raptors, sources said. ESPN reported the deal was worth two years and $10 million. According to a league source, the Raptors' offer was significantly higher than what the Cavs offered.

It was the second time in the past several days that the Cavs have been outbid on a free agent. On Saturday, center Brad Miller turned down an offer from the Cavs to take a three-year, $15 million deal from the Houston Rockets. It is believed to be more than the Cavs were willing to offer Miller.

Last week, the Cavs signed restricted free-agent guard Kyle Lowry to an offer sheet that started around $5 million per season before the deal was matched by the Rockets.

The major reason the Cavs aren't able to complete deals at the moment is they are unwilling to outbid other teams. After losing LeBron James, the team likely will have to pay a premium to get mid-level free agents such as Miller and Barnes.

With an eye toward restructuring over the next several seasons, that doesn't appear to be something General Manager Chris Grant is ready to do.

Though the Cavs have not made a roster move since the end of the season, there are signs that the team soon will begin to make roster adjustments.

The Cavs continue to have trade talks involving Delonte West, who has a partially guaranteed contract. League sources indicate the Cavs are beginning to get some traction with several teams in trade talks for West.

This is actually good to hear. I don't want the Cavs to overspend for mediocre role players. Roll with the roster as is, and wait and see if we can rob someone of young talent at the trade deadline.

I'm glad Grant isn't just making moves to look active.

It's a good thing that I'm not the GM ...... because if I was, I would sign a couple of guys whose only purpose on the roster would be to clobber Lebron James when we play the Heat.

I hear you. He might score 40 against me next year but 38 of it is going to have to come from the free throw line.

I like Barnes, hope he comes. He would play the SF, probably start right?

Did you see Jordan's HOF speech? The guy is almost universally considered the best basketball player ever and he still feels the need to get his shots in at his old foes... He's a competitor to a fault and he knows people are comparing lbj to him so he's not going to pull any punches if it can take a rung out from under the guy that (was) chasing him..

I'm a huge Jordan fan, and I thought his speech was a piece of garbage and seriously lacked class. Having said that, Jordan has always offered to help the next guys up even if it means they have a chance to be considered greater than him. He is very close confidant to Kobe Bryant, and Bryant is much closer to being Jordan than LeBron is.

No, I think Jordan was speaking the truth and what he really felt. There was no alterior motive there. I think people that are close to the league know and have known things about LeBron that the general public does not. Much of that is being validated now.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Very true - we never knew of this stuff lbj was doing to the Cavs or Team USA.

I was thinking about making a Mo Williams sig and have it say "You can't teach clutch" just to see how the rest of the board would react.

The kind I had in mind would make sure he limped to the line without his cup .... or its contents intact.

I actually really like Moon and wouldn't mind him starting. I was also thinking he wouldn't be a bad play at shooting guard.

One thing that always drove me nuts about Mike Brown was his refusal to throw in a goon (for lack of a better term) during the playoffs. Not necessarily to hurt anyone, but someone to rack up six fouls on someone like D. Howard.

We always had the personnel for it -- Darnell Jackson, Pollard, etc.

Don't know how Scott operates, but I hope we have a roster spot for a tree trunk of a 7 footer whose sole role on the team is to whack LBJ.

I agree 100%.

In general, I don't like to see teams try to injure players on another team ...... but in his case, I'll make an exception.

I'd have no issue with LBJ's career ending after his first game back in Cleveland.

I'd like to remind everyone that the last 7 years are still overall the best 7-year run of Cavalier basketball we have EVER had.

Really a 4 year run with championship aspirations.

LeBron was classless with the way he departed, I will root against him from here on out, but let's not completely debunk the fun it was to root for the Cavs the past few years.

I wouldn't mind the Cavs take a Utah Jazz of the 90's role, or run with the Pistons from the Bad Boys era, and just have fun knocking the crap out of anyone who comes through.

I hate the 90s Utah Jazz.

I hate John Stockton and Kalmalone.

80's Pistons had Isiah Thomas, arguably a top15 player alltime. Plus, Rodman, Laimbeer, and Dumars. Plenty of talent.

90's Jazz had Malone and Stockton, both top30 players alltime. Plus, Hornacek (and who could forget Byron Russell...and OSTERTAG).

If we want to reach that status, we still need a heck of a lot of talent. They knocked people on their butts (much like the current Celtics), but they had a lot of talent to boot.

Stockton was better than a top 30 player. The guy was one of the best point guards ever to play the game.

5. Pistol Pete

4- Bird
5- Russel
6- Kareem
7- Hakeem
8- Barkley
9- Dr. J
10- West
11- Robertson
12- Thomas
13- Kobe
14- Stockton
15- Shaq

edit* forgot to add Thomas I agree he was a top 15 guy

No Isiah???? What? My brain just exploded. Kids these days.

I've also had a debate with many over the years about whether the Big O was a PG or SG (he played basically a combo-PG by today's standards). If you say PG like I do, then he's definitely top5 PG of all time.

Also, where to exactly put Stockton/Malone is a tough one. The NBA top30 is awfully crowded. Most would have both around #20 I believe, so I was being cautious by putting them both under 30.

also, my top6 PGs of alltime:

1. Magic
2. Isiah
3. Oscar
4. Kidd
5. Payton
6. Stockton

don't forget: Cousy, Lucas, Iverson, Earl Monroe, and Nash

I might put Shaq ahead of Kareem. Shaq in his prime was the most dominant human being to ever play basketball. Also you're forgeting Duncan.

Fun game...here's mine:

1. Jordan
2. Wilt
3. Shaq
4. Russell
5. Magic

9. Oscar
10. Kareem

14. West
15. Havlicek

Dang, no room for Dr. J, Moses, Petit, Malone, Barkely, et cetera...that went quick

Duncan was coming next. And believe me I wanted to put Shaq higher, I could probably give you another top 15 and it would be completely different than my previous one. All these guy's were so good it's pretty tough to start ranking them. I just kind of threw the list out there. Every guy on this list was or is a pretty dominant player. The only real clear cut top guy's are Jordan Wilt, Magic and Bird the rest of the guy's could probably fal in any number of spots dependign on how you look at things.
