Browns sign Asante Rookie safety Larry Asante has signed with the Cleveland Browns. Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com reports that Asante, a fifth-round draft pick from Nebraska, has signed a four-year, $1.96 million contract. The Browns drafted cornerback Joe Haden in the first round and safety T.J. Ward in the second round and are hoping both will earn spots in the starting lineup during training camp, and coach Eric Mangini said Asante looked good enough during offseason workouts that the Browns could start three rookies in the secondary. Asante was a three-year starter at Nebraska who was known as a better defender against the run than against the pass.
Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

Yep working our way down the todem pole. Both 6th rounders down (Geathers and Mitchell) now our 5th rounder down in Asante.
Up next 3rd rounders McCoy and Lauvao.

Good to see. As a general rule I never expect much production out of fifth-round picks, but it sure would be nice if we could catch a break late in the draft for once and Asante can translate the good reports from training camp into regular season play.

I ain't big on getting excited about 5th round singings either,....but this kid is a hitter. He should, at least, make a good ST'er.

I have a feeling we will still be drafting a safety high in next year's draft... probably a QB too..

Safety... almost definitely. QB... expect another mid-rounder.
High picks will be DLine, LB, perhaps OT or OG... maybe Safety.
I expect lots of ST's play from Asante, and - barring injury to someone ahead of him - I expect to perhaps see him in the Dime packages; but not much else.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

ST's should be a blast to watch this year.

After all the under class men who came out this year. The position is going to be diluted for next April draft.
I think DL will be a high priority, but it's premature to speculate. on at this point.

I agree about DL being a point of emphasis next off season. Other than that, I think a lot depends on how players perform this year. If our young WRs struggle, we'll need to upgrade that position. If the right side of our line is still a clear weakness, we will probably be looking at RT. Also, Holmgren has said he looks to draft a QB in the late rounds each draft (which may be higher next year with the great class coming out).
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Our secondary was shredded last year so i don't think it could hurt any.

That was taken out of context. He was asked if it were possible, and he said yes, anything is possible.

yeah deep you're right. And, I think three rooks starting back there would be a little much, but if they outplay the veterans in TC, send 'em out there. My hope is that Ward starts immediately and Haden sees a lot of playing time....

Is anyone gonna miss Brodney Pool back there? I'm going to miss him a little for this athleticism, but I always felt so many times that he was clueless back there and just seemed out of it, as in he was just going through the motions, as opposed to he actually knew what was going on on the field.
I'm hoping TJ Ward gets a shot to show what he can do. Not sure if he will take advantage of playing time and make us proud, or just show to us that he has a lot of learning to do.
And between Mike Adams and Abe Elam... hmmmm... I give Adams the nod. Adams has for the most part been able to get to the ball to make plays when need be. He is a little feisty, and I like that.

Maybe it was a different day back then, but nobody thought twice about sending Hicks, Wright, Williamson, and Lott out there at once. They weren't all rookies but they were young.
So I agree,...let 'em play, even if it means taking lumps.

I like the Asante pick, but if you were going to take a backup-plan SS later in the draft why i the world did we not draft Taylor Mays in the 2nd?

because our coaching staff thinks more of Bob Sanders (Ward) than Roy Williams (Mays)?

i agree with everything there. i believe pools "play" will be missed. but those concussions. our best s play has been with pool and adams on the field together. i'd like to start ward and adams, with what we have. good corners helping out rookie s helps.

I thought Pool was a good player, but he could not stay on the field with the head injuries.

I thought that Pool was more a physically gifted athlete than a "football" guy.
I'm not all that worried about his being gone. For all of his speed and physical gifts, the middle of the field was still all too often just wide open.

And his mama! LOL. But as one of the long-suffering Helmet Stripe Nation, a little bit of amnesia might not be too awful. Certainly some C-town stuff I would like to forget. But Poole did leave a bunch of turf open at times. Whether him or somebody's screwup (real possibility!), we need a solid year of tackling from somebody.

I don't think you are going to have to worry about tackling. Assante and Ward are big hitters... someone is going to feel the pain from those young men. it's coverage that may be a problem..

If you mean reading, or knowing coverages, I agree. But this "should" be resolvable with some decent coaching. Now, if the meatball isn't in the sauce where it's supposed to be at mealtime after the cook preps it,....that's on the player.
I don't know why, but I'm counting on coaching better 7- up- front performance to help. Of course,.... this is a 2-way street,....if the secondary CAN cover, then the F7's job is a little easier too, etc.
Darn vicious cycles,...
Anyway,...I like this Assante kid. He brings it.

Yup that's what I mean,,. I figure most guys that get drafted have the physical tools to do the job,, it's what they have between thier ears and how they accept coaching that make the difference..

13 more days left until camp starts. I very much hope the phone lines are open, the conference rooms are ready, the agents and the Browns are awake and ready to discuss contracts.
Lets get it done and on time. Lets get everyone in camp and lets have a healthy camp without a single injury.
Is this too much to ask for?

No it's not too much to ask for... and I have a good feeling about this for some reason.. Maybe it's blind optimism or maybe it's because we aren't hearing any of the pre camp, pre contract, blithering idiot speak from players and agents.. not sure.. I just feel better about it than last year...

Seems to me like we've been doing pretty good since Bentley went down. Seems like it's the Steelers' turn.
