According to coaches around the league, Browns first-round pick Joe Haden has not been very impressive in camps and might not have enough speed to play corner. Maybe all that talk about some in the organization wanting to pick Kyle Wilson, and some favoring Haden are true.

Considering the souce, I doubt it. Lombardi is about as reliable as Florini. later on in the article he goes on to say that he KNOWS Pete Carrol will be successful in the NFL. Just drumming up old crap to get people to read his article.

Wow ..... I'm glad he has Haden's future all lined up for him based on OTAs and 1 minicamp ....... I had to laugh also at the caption under the picture of the Saints ...... "With QB Drew Brees under center and a great offensive line protect him, the Saints are built to contend." Really? Ya think? I mean .. the defending Super Bowl champions might contend ........ but that's kinda going out on a limb there ......

I agree. Just saw this and thought it had to be posted. It is hard to judge any player after mini camp. Especially a rookie.

How would coaches around the league have formed an opinion? Are other coaches intently tracking our minicamp and talking with our coaches?

Well .. they're "around" the league ...... Like high school coaches down the road from the stadium ...... and the one who lives across the street from the Berea facility ......

Oh, our coaches just call them every night w/ inside info. They've been telling them how much Haden stinks and what a horrible pick it was. Next they'll tell everyone how the right side of the o-line is shaping up.

1. How do ANY coaches around the league know what Haden has done or not done in camp. Certainly if its true, the only guys that would know are OUR coaches and who among them would be dumb enough to spout off about it.
2. What is with Lombardi lately, he's been digging his spurs into the Browns.. Whats up with that?
SO I guess if you believe that other coaches know what's going on in our camp,, then you should believe this story.. otherwise,, you shouldn't be worried about it at all.....

I'll get a little worried if folks on here are saying the same things after visiting camp themselves... but, I won't take Lombardi's non-knowing word on it.
He has the name, but not the sense.

Agree with all above.... First OTAs when the whole playbook is being thrown at him, slightly out of shape perhaps, etc etc etc....
We'll see how he looks at TC. This is way too early for doom and glooming a draft pick....event for Browns fans.

and Suh ‘may not be strong enough’ to play DL in the NFL.
not really worried about what shock-master Mike Lombardi says to drive up clicks on his site.
his sources are probably from right after that combine when people were concerned (later came out he had a back injury). he quelled those concerns at the Florida pro-day.

Very true. And superior technique can help counterbalance a slight lack of top end speed anyway.

OH yeah,, I remember now,, yeah, he had a kinda not so good showing at the Combine and everyone was saying,, the man doesn't have any speed.. Maybe that's what he's talking about..
But your right, his proday showed he had the speed if memory serves me correctly..

Exactly.
Even if he were slow, unless he was completely and totally outclassed, speed does not mean nearly as much. If he has good technique and can read routes, speed is only a secondary trait.
Heck, if speed mattered the most, the CB's in the NFL would likely become Topsy turvy.
you had a good run Hank.

Top end speed only really matters on fly patterns.... and that is generally why you have Safeties already deep to help More often than not, quickness and recovery speed mean far, far more for cornerbacks.... and yes, technique goes a LONG way.

and it doesn't matter on fly patterns if the CB knocks the WR to the ground at the LOS

I don't believe he is any slower than Bodden and he turned out to be a fine corner..To tell you the truth..Even if he were to move to safety..it would only be to put the best players on the field..such as Brown and Wright at CB McDonald being a Nickel..and Ward and Haden at Safety with possibly Haden sliding to Nickel and Adams coming in. Any way you look at it..we have potential to be pretty strong and deep in the secondary..with three guys on the field at the same time that can really lay some wood. I doubt that happens and believe this is searching for a story more so than it has any validity. Maybe the coaches want him back there because we lack a cover safety with impact and has more to do with that than anything else..

You gotta figure the Browns will keep a strong eye out for camp casualties at both safety and WR. Looking for vets bumped by strong rooks.

The Rams cut Otagwe earlier this year. He is a Pro Bowl caliber guy who is also a turnover machine.
We passed.
That tells me that we probably aren't looking for a starter if we go looking for a Safety.

A lot of experts had Haden as the No. 1 corner in the draft, so I doubt he's lost it over the past few months.
Man the Internet age has led to a lot of crappy journalism (and led to a lot of bloggers and other website writers calling themselves "journalists"). I guess he who types loudest and most often gets the attention.

A well documented problem at the combine when he shouldn't have run to a 4.39 on several watches at his pro-day.
Not many run 4.2 , and that's not pulling away by much from a 4.4...what's that...a few feet over 60 yards??
So say the real speed is 4.42....that's plenty fast enough.
I have seen the guy play maybe 5-6 times over the last few years....if he doesn't pan out, it won't be because of a lack of speed.
I see no reason why he won't pan out.
Top HS player....check
Top college player....check
If he doesn't work out, blame it on the X factor....but I don't know how to factor that....nor anyone else for that matter.
Everybody is going to think Joe is swell by game 8.

Peen, you are a Gator homer.
but right on with Haden. guy reminds me of Cortland Finnegan (best tackling CB in the NFL) with more speed and better hands.

What matters is game speed with the pads on..and if he's quick enough ,has good technique this won't be a huge problem..we'll see,I'm not gonna go the route the Browns shoulda took ,because I felt he was still the best pick and still do.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me why this info, apparently coming from "coaches around the league" should even have any cred? Unless they are OUR coaches,, how the hell would any other coach know what he did in our various camps, OTAs etc.......
So I question if indeed he even has a lack of speed to begin with.....
I think this is Lombardi being Lombardi... And that can't be good for Sports Journalism.. Not even a little.

While I like Florio's writing and do not agree with your criticism I very much agree that Mike Lombardi appears to have a negative subjective slant with regards to anything Cleveland. I believe he was fired here and his views on NFL network seem to be constant with his angst. His opinions are hardly objective and are easily dismissed.

Well keep waiting..cuze the coaches around the league are in their own camps looking at their own players..now maybe someone is letting this stuff out..hmmmm perhaps Ryan since it was known Haden was not his selection... some wanted Wilson but he didn't go till 29th..which is about where he should have been taken.
