Cowboys | Dez Bryant gets five-year deal
Thu, 22 Jul 2010 16:52:14 -0400

Updating a previous item, Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant agreed to a five-year, $11.8 million contract, reports David Moore, of The Dallas Morning News. $8.3 million of the deal is guaranteed. He will receive a $1.95 million signing bonus and a $570,000 roster bonus.

From all appearances he looks like he's ready to play some football. Would have loved him in C-town, but ..... you know the drill

Figuring that he fell to #24 on a decent team, it's no doubt he wouldn't be holding out for more and more money.. If we picked him at #7, he'd still be unsigned and begging for more money.. considering he's a higher pick.

My guess is that his agent slapped him in the back of the head and pointed out just how much money his actions and attitude had cost them both, and that if he just shuts his hole and goes to work and proves himself, he can get a MUCH better 2nd contract.

My guess is that his agent took WAAAAAAAYY too much flack over Crabtree's holdout last year (same agent) and a few others. He has a similar player in Dez Bryant and it was the agent who is saving face on this one and not Dez Bryant

Could be be that they all agree'd to the numbers presented? Does it have to have some underlying motive?

Yea, this is from just one draft scouting website.. but this is pretty much how I feel..

3/24 Update: Bryant continues to show off his talent as a wide receiver. The only thing keeping him back is his image and reputation stemming from his suspension for lying to the NCAA. However, that is all just media hype. And media hype has nothing to do with what NFL teams know about Bryant. He is continuing to handle all the rumors with relative ease and as long as he did not tank any interviews, he will be the first receiver off the board and gone by the mid-way point of the first round.

He paniced and lied about who he was talking to.. he didn't rape anybody, he didn't beat anybody up, he wasn't driving when he blew a .2, he talked to an agent.. then he blew up when some douche asked him if his mom was a hooker..

For all I know the guy is a total jerk because I don't know him but just based on what I've seen in the media.. I have no reason to believe he is... it reads more like media hype than anything else..

I agree dc, I told the people around me at radio city after berry was gone that I didn't know who the browns would take but if I had to choose one I thought he'd be the pick. I had assumed Haden was out of it once they got brown. Glad to have haden on the team, but number 7 overall defender that isn't expected to start was a surprise to me.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant refuses to carry pads
Sun, 25 Jul 2010 20:12:39 -0400

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant shunned a rookie ritual Sunday, July 25, when he refused to carry WR Roy Williams' pads back after the team's morning practice, reports The Associated Press. Veteran players traditionally hand their pads to a rookie after practice. Bryant said, "I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player's pads. If I was a free agent, it would still be the same thing."

I don't really see how this makes him an idiot. I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a top-10 WR in the NFL. I think we'll be regretting passing on him.

It was Roy Williams pads... If you want me to participate in rookie hazing, at least let it be done by someone of merit

This is like the waterboy telling him to carry the cooler.

I think we'll see a pretty even split on opinions with rookie hazing in the NFL. It's harmless, a rite of passage, and all previous rookies did it. It's also stupid, pointless, and a way for the vets to act like jerks.

The best method to deal with it is to just do it. Make it fun and play it up. If the vets see you doing the stuff proudly with a smile, they know it's not getting to you....and they'll move on to a rookie that doesn't like it. Why? Cause they like to see guys suffer through it.

Bryant better be careful. He may be right that the Cowboys didn't draft him to be anyone's goferboy, but he's going to rub a lot of the vets the wrong way. And he NEEDS those vets to look good on the field.

He's going to take a stand on.... carrying pads?

I'm more disappointed that THAT was the Cowboy's rookie hazing ritual. He's gonna get much worse later on.

Edit: That was a general response, not to anyone in particular.

Its a football tradition that dates and spans further back than the Cowboys or Dez Bryant. Joe Thomas carried Steinbach's and Ryan Tucker's pads. Its a sign of respect. Quinn had to get up and sing his school's fight song in front of everyone. I can't remember which RB for the Cardinals it was, but he went out of his and carried Smith's pads and helmet all season, even though its only supposed to be a TC thing. To me it just shows what an ass Bryant is. He has a lot of maturing to do and I for one am glad he's not our headache.

The players will take care of it...probably starting with nobody but rookie QBs will throw to him in practice.

Defensive vets...a few hits a little late with a few words will send a message.....not bad hits....just some pushing.

Romo could end that right away by telling Dez to carry the pads for everybody or he isn't going to toss him the ball, or is going to toss it in places it can't be caught.

The New England Patriots signed first-round draft choice Devin McCourty to a five-year contract.

The contract for the cornerback from Rutgers is worth $13.2 million with $7.825 million guaranteed, according to his agent, Andy Simms.

McCourty, a cornerback from Rutgers, was the 27th overall selection in the draft. He was the last of the Patriots' 12 draft choices without a contract. McCourty was eager to report by Wednesday, when veterans were due at 7 a.m. Simms said McCourty signed his contract at about 7 a.m.

"We worked pretty late [Tuesday] to get to this point," Simms said. "We know what's important in New England and that's to get to camp on time."

McCourty is the second first-round draft choice to agree to a contract; Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant (24th overall) is the other.

In selecting McCourty, Patriots coach Bill Belichick cited his four-down impact, meaning that he could contribute both on defense and special teams.

"He's fast, he's tough. He's a good four-down football player -- first, second, third and fourth down," Belichick said on draft day. "In the kicking game, he's certainly one of the top guys in the draft in that area."

In addition to contributing on special teams, McCourty is projected to compete for a starting job at left cornerback with 2009 second-round draft choice Darius Butler.

The negotiations took place with the possibility of a lockout in 2011 if management and the players' union can't agree on a new collective bargaining agreement.

"The pending labor situation is something we had to consider. We worked with the Patriots on some of the issues," Simms said.

I'm certainly not sure, but I bet you that Payton Manning wasn't drafted to be anybodys gooferboy either,, and I bet he carried some vets pads in from practice, sang a school song, and maybe even participated in a skit or two..

Dez is apparently too good for that.. that can't bode well for him...

Source: Tebow 'close' to deal with Broncos ahead of camp

Talks between the Denver Broncos and first-round pick Tim Tebow are "close," a source tells NFL Network's Scott Hanson. Tebow is staying near the Broncos' facility, and is ready to take part in the team's first rookie training camp practice later today if a deal can be reached.

Serious negotiations between the Broncos and Tebow's agent, Jimmy Sexton, took place last night and this morning, the source said.

Broncos rookies are set to take the field Wednesday afternoon. The full team opens up training camp Aug. 1 -- leading some to believe that Tebow and fellow first-rounder Demaryius Thomas might not come to terms until the weekend.

The "think for yourself" argument is pretty weak. He had to carry someone's pads. Big deal...

This has been a part of the NFL (and pretty much any competitive team) for a long time. I was more surprised that the hazing was so tame. Where hazing gets a bad name is when it's out of control. But this guy is going to draw the line at carrying somebody's pads? Weak.

Semi-serious question: Will the player's union get involved in this?

Also...

Everyone else has done it before him. He's nothing special.

This tells me the guy has an enormous, and enormously fragile ego.

That being said, it'll get straightened out and reporters will have better things to do when the season starts.

When I played sports, I remember getting "hazed." It was very tame. For example, on the first overnight road trip with the wrestling team, I had to sing a song in the van (I sang "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain", FYI, since I didn't think I'd get enough background support for "Midnight Train to Georgia.") I didn't do it because I was a follower or a sheep. I did it because it was a rite of passage.

And, to tell you the truth, I enjoyed it because it made me feel like part of the team. I was doing something that only guys on the team did.

The next year, one of the new freshman refused to do it, saying he didn't have to, blah blah blah. And, to be honest, it kind of PO'd a lot of people. It wasn't because he wasn't a "sheep", but it just kind of felt like he didn't care about the team's traditions.

Was it silly and utterly pointless? Yeah, I guess you could say that. But to me and a lot of other guys, it was something that only guys on our team did, and once you did it, you really felt like a team player.

Remember a few years back when those videos came out of the hazing that took place at the Citadel? (or was it VMI?). They'd pin a pin right to a guy's chest or something like that. Were those guys doing it because they were "sheep"? Maybe in some instances, but most of the guys did it because that was a step in becoming a part of the unit.

Are you bigger than the team and its traditions, no matter how silly?

Some of the Cowboys' vets might say it's no big deal, but I'll bet several of them are pretty cheesed off about it.

And, to another poster, I doubt the union would get involved, especially in something as innocuous as this. Now, if the team actually punished him, then, yeah, they'd get involved.

By refusing, he's basically told his teammates that he's bigger than the team.

I've played on plenty of competitive teams, and always got hazed my freshman years. For hockey, it was picking up the pucks after practice (all freshman had to do it). Or before games, a freshman had to fill the water bottles (for teams that didn't have a trainer).

Hazing has a negative connotation because it can get out of hand. A little good judgment goes a long way.

I'm just a little irritated with how many people are just bleating along with what the media thinks about Dez. And why the hell should he have to carry Roy Williams' pads? Roy's about done. He's lost explosion and quickness and will soon not even be the team's number three option in the passing game (Witten, Austin, and Bryant will be), despite costing more than an arm and a leg to acquire his shoddy services.

Quote:

None taken, but false. I know it's not the pros, but in high school me and other young bucks didn't just rigidly adhere to stupid hazing rituals that had nothing to do with being better football players. Just because someone's been there before us or went along with these pointless traditions prior to us stepping up didn't entitle them to petty, pompous displays of servitude. You can decline that stuff and focus on what matters. For all this talk about his massive ego, he was the first first-rounder signed and into camp. He's focusing on running good routes and catching the football. That's his job; not bending over to please someone who's job he's going to take soon.

It's all about what takes place between the sidelines. I just don't put all this stock into downgrading the guy over stupid traditions and sentiments in jock culture that seem to be held in such high regard, folks. Taking that and making a character assessment based off that is stupid.

If the "teams" were made up of one person, then you would be right.

Dez carrying someone's pads does not equal "an act of servitude". It's a part of becoming part of a team. It's a sign that you aren't bigger than the team as a whole. It doesn't matter who handed their pads to Dez.

TO can't stay on a team because of issues similar to this. Dez probably isn't nearly as bad as TO, but that goes to show you that stuff like this is actually important.

You and the others who thought that way weren't bright enough to remember your plays or think on your feet, and weren't on the field while we were. The point is, this doesn't have ANYTHING to do with Dez Bryant as a football player or person (despite your cute little attempts in red to tell me what the purpose of my post was- that was the point). Do you see everything as black and white to where you have to tunnel-vision your thoughts to think that way or do you need to be, oh I don't know, dropped on your head as a child?

Respect isn't given; it's earned. I understand these rights of passages have been in place for ages, but it doesn't mean they need to be upheld by all or shown blind reverence to. I hear what people are saying about respecting veterans and whatnot, but playing along with these little joking shenanigans isn't how me or anyone else shows their utmost respect. We learned from what the older guys knew, asked questions, and broadened our understanding of our schemes, helpful hints for one on one, practicing hard against each other, and just getting a handle on winning football games. Until Dez is "in one ear, out the other" to Jason Witten when he's talking about where he's supposed to be lined up or not paying attention to the WR coach on how to sit where the zone is soft, then I'm unconcerned about him as a player/person.

Again, since you can't seem to grasp the concept I was aiming at, the point was that these rites of passage have nothing to do with being good at your job. Maybe it'll garner some cheap praise for you when you play coffee jockey or pick up your boss' dry cleaning, more power to you. Just don't tell me that I'm slipping up by not playing by rules that were made up when I was nowhere around. Can't wait until the dead season of sports journalism is over...

Can't argue with you about the media idiots playing this up since it involves Dez Bryant. I'm willing to bet that this happens all the time with drafted rookies. And then it gets handled by the vets. Since it's Dez, it gets reported on...

The acts themselves aren't important. It's the show that you're putting the team in front of yourself. Everyone else does it, what makes him so special?

It's about being part of a team.

Jesse Jackson wants to borrow this quote. If only Jason Witten asked him to carry his pads instead.
