Maurice Clarett back in class at OSU COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Ohio State University says former football star Maurice Clarett has been granted re-entry to pursue his degree after he spent more than three years in prison. Ohio State spokesman Jim Lynch says in a statement that Clarett started classes on Monday after he was readmitted by the College of Education and Human Ecology, where he was originally enrolled. Clarett says in a statement that it is a “surreal feeling to be back at Ohio State” and that he doesn’t want to be a “distraction or nuisance” to the football team or other students. Clarett led the Buckeyes to the 2002 national championship in his only college season. He pleaded guilty in 2006 to aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon, and served 3 1/2 years in a Toledo prison, where he took college-credit courses.

Good for him. Hopefully, for his sake, he can finish a degree and make something of his life.

If he'd have shut his mouth for two years he could be living comfortably in the NFL right now.
I have a hard time feeling any sympathy towards guys like Clarrett.

I understand your point Rambo... I don't have much sympathy for him either. But you know, a lot of young people make dumb-ass decisions, and if he turns himself around after several stupid mistakes, then you have to give him credit for seizing the opportunity instead of turning into an idiot-for-life.

He completely squandered his chance for an NFL career. I am happy for him and wish him nothing but the best. It appears that he has learned and grown from his mistakes.

I bet Tressel has a hand in this and a reason why all recruits should look at OSU....he's stuck with him even when he's been stabbed in the back and lied to/about

This frankly ticks me off to no end. My nephew is about to enter his senior year in HS and has a 3.7 GPA and 2 college courses already and may not get into OSU because of his grades (requires something like a 3.75). But this guy gets re-admitted? Completely ridiculous.
Well, OSU, the folks at the American Cancer Society now are your biggest fans, the money I used to donate to you now gets added onto the plate I already give them in honor of a fellow OSU grad who died way too early.

What program at OSU is he looking to get into? With that GPA I would think he could get into one of the colleges.
Edit: Is he out of state? That could be why....

Computer Science is his goal. No, he's in state.
Maybe my sister was confused or something, she said he couldn't get into OSU with the grade point he has, he was just a smidge low. And I know the GPA I mentioned above is correct. I didn't realize OSU turned into Cornell.

You're not wrong. I know someone who had a 3.8 GPA and a 25 ACT and didn't get in at Ohio State.

No offense to your nephew, but how much revenue has he brought the university?

It must be something very specific to the program he wants to take. I applied with a 3.4 and a 26 on my ACT's and they were salivating over me. I ended up going the military route instead though. Things couldn't have changed that much since then, its only been a few years.

They have changed that much. In '06, my cousin got in with a 3.3 and a 23 ACT. In '07, a different cousin didn't get in with a 3.6 and a 24 ACT. The standards have only gone up since then.

Okay, I have now changed my opinion. I didn't realize that one of the two largest universities in the country had such high standards.

Crazy, why would they do that? They're one of those schools that thrives on a large student body, not an elite one.

When I went 10 years ago, I know the act minimum was a 24. Not sure about GPA. They do offer the regional campuses in mansfield, marion, and a few other places. Basically it allows those students who didn't get accepted a chance to take basic classes their freshman year. If they do well, they could get accepted at the main campus in 2 quarters, or by the fall of their 2nd year. Know plenty of kids that went that route, and it worked out for them.

Jc.. it's probably because they changed the grade scale for the lazy so what used to be a 3.0 GPA is now a 3.9

Less than Clarett for sure, but has brought less negative press than him too. Its a shame, the kid had bled scarlet and gray since the day he was born.

I don't know about OSU specifically, but I know most schools change year by year based on the average GPA and ACT/SAT scores of all applicants.

They have consistently gone up to the point where they are the most selective school in Ohio, and one of the most selective in the surrounding states.

I have a tough time believing that 60K student body Ohio State is more selective than equally academic prestigious Case with a 3-4K student body

Perhaps among other state schools. OSU's acceptance rate is 68%. While it's certainly lower than it was (75% or so in 2006), it is hardly all that selective. For comparison's sake, Oberlin's acceptance rate is only 34%. Denison is around 39%. In the Big Ten, Michigan only accepts 47% of its applicants and Northwestern accepts 30%.
That is only a smattering of schools I know of that are more selective than OSU. I'm sure if I looked into it, I'd find more.

Ok, i think we need to keep in mind he's going into education, not computer science. It's going to be much more difficult, due to the type of person applying, to get into something like CS than education and human ecology. CS pulls kids who are the cream of the crop, the perennial overachievers. So of course it's going to be more difficult to get into a huge school that probably advertises their programs world wide. Basically, Clarett is setting himself up for a career in coaching/motivational speaking. Comparing the two program's entrance requirements is laughable.

There's nothing wrong with him going into education/human ecology. It's not like he was taking general studies/african american studies. Just because he isn't taking computer sciences doesn't mean he's a moron. There are some who would rather do other jobs than work on computers all day.

I don't think he was saying anything about Clarett's intelligence. But merely stating there are entrance requirements to a Computer Science course than a education/human ecology course.

Just as a general FYI, there are entrance requirements for Education and Human Ecology. I know first hand as my degree from OSU is from that very college. I have a BS in Human Ecology with a major of Child and Family Sciences. I suppose it depends on what part of the school Clarett is actually enrolled in though. I had to have a particular GPA/ACT score (even as a transfer student) to gain entrance to the college.
Not defending Clarett, he was a moron for screwing up like he did. I just commend him for trying to straighten his life out and specifically for going back to OSU. Picking another school would have been the easy way out for him here in this situation. He didn't take the easy way.

Right. Just stating that the computer sciences have almost as much competition for the few spots they have as med schools do for their spots. It's highly competitive and it's evidenced in the high entrance marks that incoming classes have. And that education and human ecology probably doesn't have the same inflated test scores acting as a barrier towards entrance. Not saying E&HE is easy or anything, just that the comparison isn't even close to being equal.

Anyone think this is his last attempt to get into professional football? I mean if he is going to train, doing it with the staff at OSU can't get much better.
He is only 26 now and has VERY little tread on his tires - since 18 he has just two semesters of college ball and not even a full season in the pro's. He's probably about 23 in football physical age.
And anyone mad because he is there and they or their relatives couldn't get in is ridiculous. Like one student is keeping one of the other 60K (in a different degree plan) from getting into school.
About the academic level, I am sure there is a formula - GPA, ACT/SAT and involvement with a heavier emphasis on the ACT/SAT then GPA the involvement.
GPA is such an inconsistent measure from one HS to another. I know 4.0s that couldn't get a 21 on their ACT majoring in Engineering freshman year...Sophomore year, they were on Academic Probation because they just didn't have the math capacity and changed to a Business Major.
My only point is that numbers don't always tell the story from one student to another.
And many forget, he had a 3.8 in HS and graduated early. Anyone know what his grades were while at OSU or even how he did in prison? Surely that factored in.

I know when I applied for Visual Communications in '03 I got denied with a 3.3 and a 26 ACT, along with having work shown in the Governor's Art Show and Scholastic. The funny thing is, I actually applied to OSU as a backup plan. My first choice was Ohio University, who has a very highly rated School of Communications and Journalism. I believe the year that I applied they only accepted 60 or so students into the Visual Communications major, and I had to submit a portfolio and go through a 30 min. interview with three faculty members. Thankfully I got accepted because there wasn't really anywhere else that I wanted to go, and they have one of the top programs in the country.
I might have got denied at OSU because there is a branch like 10 minutes from my house, but I knew of kids from my high school that had lower gpa's and test scores that got in (this was general application, not specific to a major). Like I said, fortunately I was accepted to where I wanted to go.
Anyway, as to Mr. Clarett, I applaud him. Being a Michigan fan, I really don't like the guy (not just because he's a Buck but because of off field incidents). That being said, people can change. Hopefully he finally realizes what he did was wrong and he can make himself a positive member of society. There are so many people in his situation that just fall back into a cycle of behavior and never get out. Maybe one day he can teach other athlete's not to do what he did, and caution them of the trappings of fame.

That may be how many schools are doing freshman entrance now, especially the picky ones. Exceptional students get early admission into their program, otherwise you have to apply as a non-declared and apply to the program-of-choice later on after they've shown they can hack it in college. In a way, this is the first "weedout" or bottleneck of a freshman's college career.
