Hey I was wondering what you all think about A-Rods 600th HR? The news outlets (ESPN especially) are reporting this like it's real news. My take on it is the guy is a confirmed cheater. Who cares how many HRs he has? No one has any idea how many he hit while using or how many he hit clean.
Does this show baseball really doesn't care of get it? Why no outrage? Are we all just so ok with cheating in baseball that we don't care? I'm just curious as I care, and think that his "record" is bogus. While he is a great player he's a cheater.

Tainted 600. Like most of the numbers put up in this era. You can't believe any of them.

MLB is really dropped in my rankings. Great game, bad league.

If it was Travis Hafner going his 600th it wouldnt even be a blurp on the BSPN news feed. Who cares.

It looked like there were more people on the HR porch yesterday then there are in the entire stadium during most games. That ball will probably sell for like $100k. I hope it goes into one of the bullpens.

So you hope the ball lands in the Yankees bullpen where they would just give the ball to arod, instead of an Indians fan catching it who could sell it for a pretty penny?

Gonna have to explain that one for me

I guess if you disliked the indians or the people of Northeast Ohio?

Hey it's a slow news day.

Ok what about the state of the game then as far as how this HR chase affects baseball?
Baseball is my favorite sport. Each throw from the mound to the catcher is a game in itself. At it's best, it's one of the purest sports on the planet. See the ball, hit the ball, catch the ball. However if you've played at any level you know how tough that can be.
I guess I'm just sad really that we don't have any level of outrage anymore about it.

Anyway free posts.

I've heard estimates from experts saying anywhere from $100k-500k.

When I look at A rod.. I see him as a good player, even HOF caliber.. but because of the steroid issue.. I do have a problem. Maris got an asterisk.. saying he took the easy way out.. he did not, the season expanded.. but the players from the steroid era get no asterisk.. though people do know how they got their homers...

but I do give them credit.. even with the steroids, they had to put the bat on the ball, and they did do that...

I love baseball. I love seeing great things happen on a baseball field - but A-Rod hitting his 600th means nothing to me. So I guess it's a shame that it's such a sham.

There was a time a few years ago while he was still in Texas that I thought every record in the game would be broken by him and the world would stop, lol, to watch him approach those records - now as he goes for a special number in baseball I just feel nothing. I'd rather watch my Pirates probably lose tonight in Colorado than watch him take an at bat - he means nothing in the grand scheme.

What's wrong with ARod getting the ball. He hit the ball for his 600th HR. Why does someone else deserve to cash in on it? If it goes in the Indians bullpen he's still going to get it.

Why would wanting the ball to land in the bullpen have anything to do with this? There were probably more Yankees fans at the game yesterday than Indians fans judging by who the loudest cheers were for.

Because thats how it works in baseball. so again, you would prefer a Yankees player ($300,000k+ per year) to catch the ball than clevelander Joe Smith ($30,000+ per year) I guess if thats your opinion, we'll just have to disagree. Id just prefer the money to go to a local.

Maybe he meant that the ball could land in the Indians Bullpen, so Dolan can then afford to go out and get a minor league prospect.

I echo many of your thoughts on him with his tainted legacy. He's just another product of Selig's ignorance on the super hitter controversy that hit the mid 90s until halfway through the last half of the last decade. I sure hope someone draws an asterisk on this ball as they did with the one that Bonds hit to take the all time record.

The question is what will happen when the * generation is eligible for the HOF?

How I feel about it......ask me if I care if lbj wins a championship.....the answer will be one in the same......I could care less.

Not sure I care anymore either.

I may be a two team guy from here on out. Go Browns and Blackhawks!

It's already going against them. McGwire has been eligible the past few years and only received about 20 something percent of the votes. Him & Palmeiro will be eligible next year.

Remember the movie 'airheads' when the rock band takes the radio station hostage in an effort to drum up publicity and get a record contract?

and when they finally get that contract it comes from a studio executive dillweed who they hate, so the lead singer wipes the contract between his butt cheeks and hands it back to him?

that would be fantastic if someone did that. caught the ball, on camera stuck the ball down their pants with an obvious 'wiping' motion, and then threw the ball back onto the field.

way too much $$$ at stake to actually have someone do it, but it would be grand.

I hadn't realized he was even close to 600.
The home runs records mean nothing now. McGwire, Bonds, A-Rod, Sosa..... they mean jack to me. They and Bud Selig and the union and others who let them make a mockery of hallowed baseball records can all jump in a lake.
In my mind Hank Aaron is still the home run king, and Maris still owns the single-season record of 61.

An apropos ending to tonight's ballgame. Tribe up 4-1, two outs in the 9th, runners on 1st and 3rd and A-Rod at the plate...and he hits a grounder to short for the force at 2nd to end the game.

Heck of a game for the rookie pitcher Josh Tomlin, too. 7 1/3 innings, 1 earned run. Basically perfect through the first five, giving up a single to Jeter who was then picked off at 2nd, and sitting down every other batter he faced.

ARod finally hit #600 today. It went into the net in dead center so he'll probably get the ball.

Baseball's a joke. Look how far the homerun numbers have fallen off in recent years since the steroid testing began. Baseball = Joke

Also a study was done that said the ball is only in play 8 1/2 minutes the entire game on average. I'd rather watch soccer.

Ugh.

An entire game played to a 0-0 tie ...... and people talking about how exciting it was .....

Sorry, gonna pass on that one.

The Earth could get together and cancel soccer forever and it would not bother me in the slightest.

Then watch soccer and don't open up threads that are obviously about baseball.. I've never understood people who open up threads so they can comment on what a pointless thread it is..

What is it for football? Let's do some hypothetical math: Avg play length ( about 6 seconds) x avg amount of plays (about 100) = 600 seconds. Or 10 minutes. Not much different than baseball. But better to watch anyway

Both baseball and football 1000x more intriguing to watch than soccer.

Amen.

And all I know about the A-Rod HR is that I have to hear John Sterlings call about every 10 minutes that I'm listening to sports radio, and that's not a good thing. His calls, his nicknames for the players - just the worst things I've ever heard. God do I hate hearing that man.

Ain't that the truth. Even hearing the Chicago guys saying "you can put it on the board ... yes!" has a certain appeal to it ... but Sterling is just plain annoying.

See, I dunno. I'm a Yankee fan. I think A-Rod is a great player, do I care about his personal achievements, no, except now that he got over the 600 hump he'll begin hitting homers again.

But, John Sterling is the voice of the New York Yankees and I love him and Susan Waldman. Baseball is great on the radio, and I guess I've just gotten used to him. So I'm the opposite of you guys, I like Sterling, and his nicknames. Is he my favorite announcer, no (Tommy Heinson of the Celtics TV Broadcasts is) but I definitely like Sterling

Wait, are you the same guy that is a Celtics fan? And was going to switch teams to the Knicks had LeBron signed there?

My apologies if I have you mixed up with someone else.
