He appeared in 40 games with 27 starts at the University of Pittsburgh (2006-09), including starts in each of his final 26 games. Malecki played defensive tackle for his first two seasons before switching to offensive line. As a senior, he earned first-team All-Big East honors and was named to the Big East All-Academic team after starting all 13 games at right guard. Born on May 26, 1988, the 6-foot-2, 304-pound Malecki is a native of Pittsburgh. He attended Franklin Regional (Murrysville, Pa.) High School. Malecki will wear jersey No. 60.

Browns sign WR Taurus Johnson Cut by the Miami Dolphins last week, former University of South Florida wide receiver Taurus Johnson has a new gig. According to his agent, David Canter, Johnson has joined the Cleveland Browns. Johnson went undrafted out of USF and was signed as a free agent by the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson has also spent time with the Detroit Lions' practice squad before being cut last season. He has been on the Dolphins' practice squad, too. In college, he ranked second in school history with 29 kickoff returns and third in kickoff return yards with 784.
Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

I wonder why we do this instead of doing the IR thing?
Is it to do right by the player? As in, if their injury will carry beyond the start of the season (or well into it), but they're haven't proven enough for us to save a spot for them... so we just do an injury waiver so that they can have an opportunity to catch on with another team, or perhaps return to us later on?

If no one claims Haggerty, he will be placed on Injured Reserve and miss the season. Haggerty is an undrafted free agent from Southwest Oklahoma State who has looked good in the preseason. He was injured near the end of the Packers’ game with what looked as though an ankle injury. obr

I don't know, but I have to think it somehow helps the team more than the player....which is fine by me.
My guess is placing him on IR or PUP prevents us from picking up another body at this point. What would prevent teams from placing guys with semi decent chances of being a decent player in IR for year rather than the PS rather than cutting them or placing them on the limited PS???

A player can't be put on PUP once camp starts unless he hasn't practiced yet.
Players on IR aren't allowed to practice.

By waiving him and hoping nobody claims him is how we lost that CB last year to the Jags. This is the way it has to be done to add a player to the IR for some reason.
After the Jags claimed that CB last year I got to reading and they bucked the norm, most teams won't claim an injured young player knowing a team is trying to get that player to the IR.

though, for an UDFA we can't really complain either way. people were upset last year because it was a draft pick that we lost.

If they put him on IR they have to pay him for the entire season (unless they reach an injury settlement). So they're basically trying to get an injured player off the roster without having to pay him, in order to make room for a player that can play.

My understanding of this process is:
With a drafted player, or a veteran we can automatically send them to IR, if we choose to, or reach an injury settlement and release them, which allows them to join any other team, even return to us later in the season - since IR is OUT for the entire year.
With an undrafted player, they must be injured/released, giving them the same opportunity to join another team or rejoin us at a later date.
A drafted player is different than undrafted as we can retain the rights to them since we officially selected them in the draft, where as an undrafted player, essentially selected us. Thus last year, Don Carey (If I remember correctly) should have been placed directly on IR, but wasn't, for whatever reason (I think it was a personell blunder on Mangini/Kokinis part, but thats just mho). We lost Don due to this mistake.
Having said all that, I could be mistaken (first time for everything right, lol).

I understand waiving a player before trying to get him on the PS, but this does not apply until the season starts.
Maybe the Browns brass feels there was too much competition there,.....very strange considering how highly they spoke of him.
It's not like he would have cost them to much too keep him on the IR list for the year.
I am shaking my head on this one.

If that's true that you can not put a UDRFA on the IR then that would answer the question as to why he was waived (can't ever remember having this occur with a UDRFA that I might have wanted them to Keep), but it doesn't explain why they waived him with a few weeks left until we have to start making cuts.

Just did some more reading...apparently no player can go directly to IR before the roster is cut from 80 to 75. They all have to clear waivers first.

Ah, well that makes sense, and somewhat coincides with what I was saying; except I excluded draft picks and veterans.
I think once (if) he clears waivers then he can go to IR for us, at which point we can negotiate an injury settlement, if one hasn't already been reached.

What happened: They started their final week of camp buoyed by a satisfying performance in Green Bay. There was a little bounce in their step after beating the Packers, 27-24, Saturday night. Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy (one sprained thumb, two interceptions) looked despondent watching practice and got a little pep talk from President Mike Holmgren. Coach Eric Mangini said he wants to see more of the running game this week, but two backs — Peyton Hillis and James Davis — left the field with undisclosed injuries. Among the players Mangini talked up was second-year linebacker Marcus Benard, who was credited with a team-high eight tackles, including a sack, fumble and tackle for loss.
R.I.P. brown pants: Mangini confirmed after practice that he has retired the team’s brown pants look. “It wasn’t very well-received,” he laughed. When told that uniforms are quite a hot button issue with fans, the coach said, “I hope we can get to the point where we can wear fruit on our heads and people wouldn’t notice.”
Goodbye, hello: The Browns waived injured receiver Johnathan Haggerty, a rookie minicamp phenom, and replaced him with free agent receiver Taurus Johnson, who spent parts of 2009 with Kansas City, Detroit and Miami.

St. Clair is a turnstile, Pashos is a one-man informary, whomever else we have is 2nd rate at best..... .I think that April will almost certainly see us selecting a new RT, unless by some chance a stud RT comes available via FA.

If I were a betting man, I would bet that our starting right side of the OL will wind up being Lauvao at RG and Womack at RT.

Wonder if he could be the RT?
I think he is being considered as a T backup over St Clair?

He has played it in the past, and at 6'6", 335, he has the size.
He also has a great deal of starting experience.
I am with YTBF....I think Porkchop will be the RT for most of the season.

The entire two-deep on the right side of the offensive line was missing -- guards Shawn Lauvao and Floyd Womack and tackles John St. Clair and Tony Pashos. Working with the first unit were Billy Yates at guard and Scott Kooistra at tackle. Coach Eric Mangini said Lauvao has been excused for the rest of the week for personal reasons and "may or may not" be available Saturday against St. Louis. * Little bit of a scuffle involving linebacker Titus Brown and Chris Jennings after Brown threw Jennings onto a pile of bodies. Brown swung wildly during the minor melee. He was rewarded with one lap around the practice fields. * I feel you're going to be hearing more about linebacker Marcus Benard this year. He joined the starting unit, with Scott Fujita moving inside with Chris Gocong and Matt Roth manning the other outside post. Benard is really growing on the coaches in his second season. * Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy was back on the field after missing Monday with a sprained thumb. He was surprisingly upbeat after looking down on Monday. He told me it was the first practice he ever missed. Ever. * Safety T.J. Ward made a really good breakup of a pass for Syndric Steptoe. Ward went over the top of Steptoe and knocked away the pass before making contact. Matt Roth got really pumped watching the play unfold in front of him from the sideline and he gave Ward a pat on the backside. Ward looks better in coverage every day. * Rookie receiver Carlton Mitchell, who may be the faster wideout on the roster, might be hitting the rookie camp wall. He was reamed by coordinator Brian Daboll at one point for a miscue and later dropped a pass. link
