How many people around here have played this? The first one was excellent, I love BioWare's RPG's and I think the first Mass Effect game was great. I finally got my hands on Mass Effect 2 and it's managed to pry me away from NCAA 11 which I have been playing pretty consistently since I bought it.
I imported my character from the first game and with it you get a few bonus for importing a character from the first game. I also think you get the advantage of having any paragon/renegade conversation choices unlocked as opposed to having to unlock them while you play the game though I am not sure of this.
Anybody else playing this or have played this already? I've heard they're going to be making a Mass Effect 3 to "complete the sci-fi trilogy" which I think is a great idea, I'm not even done this game yet but I know they could take it further.

Yeah Ive played both Mass effects. When you import a high level character I think like 49-50 you get to start at level 4, like 50,000 bonus resources, and paragon or renegade bonus.
I played the first game as solider or biotic and the 2nd game as a infiltrator and vanguard. Tips play the game as completely paragon or completely renegade cause the game kinda punishes you if you don't. The 2nd game is quite a bit better than the first. My favorite class was probably Vanguard and I liked using Legion and the Krogan (cant remember his name) for my insane run in 2.
Yes they are making a third mass effect as we speak. My favorite sub-plot is the rachni and I hope that decision will make a good return in the third game.
Go Browns!!

Played both, really enjoyed both. However I found the second playthrough on ME 2 to be boring and never finished it. The first ME I played through around 7 times though, not sure what but something was missing.

Loved them both. I was able to get all the acheivements on both games. I love the game, not just for the gameplay, but for the storylines ... they really immerse you into these new worlds and tell a story. Can't wait for the third one to come out.

I could write paragraphs and paragraphs on the games, but I'll save you all and just say that I couldn't gush about these games enough. I loved ME1, and ME2 just blew it out of the water.
My favorite class is infiltrator. Sitting back and sniping/sneaking around while teamed up with two pounders (Grunt, the Krogan, was my favorite character both in game and in cut-scenes/conversation). The other would either be the Merc (forget his name) or a biotic. I've played ME2 all the way through 4 times, but the add-ons had alot to do with that.
By the way, the add-ons are definitely worth the cost of admission. Not mind-blowing, but good bang-for-the-buck. The add-on thief character has a really cool loyalty mission. She's also very interesting in combat with her sneak attack move.
Playing as a biotic was a little disappointing, but that might have more to do with me already playing through the game several times, so it was getting boring.
I'm really looking forward to the 3rd installment. Bioware puts out a great product. They make you wait, but it's always worth it. Probably my favorite part of the 2nd game is how the storyline from the first game affects the second. I always got a kick out of meeting up with secondary/tertiary characters from the first game.

Totally agree with that. Running into a character from the first game (in the second game) was like bumping into an old high school buddy or something.

My favorite part was running into Wrex in the second game, but I think I like Grunt more than I liked Wrex.
I totally agree on an earlier poster saying you almost have to be totally good or totally bad. I don't think that the game punishes you, it's just that you don't get any cool outcomes when you try to be down the middle.
After I finish Crackdown 2, I might just fire this game up again.

I'm currently at the part where the collectors bait you into a trap. HOLY $#!@ I did not expect it to be this crazy. I'm going to re-select my party (I'm a vanguard) and take the assault rifle upgrade rather than the shotgun upgrade. I'm also thinking of taking Jack or Miranda, and Grunt. (I originally took Grunt and the Assassin but it doesn't seem to be working out too well for me). This game is growing to be one of my favorites. I already want to play the first through again and go back-to-back with the two games.

What level are you playing? Hard? Wait till you get to "Insane" You have to pay attention to what kind of enemies you're going up against and bring the guys best suited to take down those types of shields/barriers/armor. Mordin is one of the best with his "Incinerate" ability. It cuts through armor and barriers like butter. Samara is also good (although I don't think you'll have her yet), as her "Reave" is just as good. Miranda is best for Geth missions, as her Overload and Warp cut through shields and armor nicely. If you aren't already, you should be hitting the spacebar frequently and using your wingmens' special powers as soon as they are off of cool down. Also use the spacebar-cover as much as possible, as the enemies tend to aim for you first, rather than your teammates. Many levels you can do without even firing a shot if you have the right teammates.

Yeah, I've completed a hard game. Haven't tried the Insane yet (didn't in ME1, either). I think I'm due for another play through. :-)
For some reason, I always paid more attention to weapons than abilities. I liked to balance close-range weapons with a sniper. Except when I was an infiltrator, I tended to do most of the heavy lifting when it came time for fighting.
My former roommate is a marine (he's a former roommate because he's deployed right now) and I totally got him hooked on the game. The guy actually shipped himself his Xbox so he could keep going through the storyline while in Afghanistan. Him and I always got more out of strategically positioning the teammates more than anything. I was always so impressed how much of a difference that made (setting an L-shaped ambush during the Merc assaults while rescuing Garrus just tears them apart).

Get ready to spew a few lines worth of profanity laced tirades while on insanity. "Insanity" is just that when you get started, everything has armor or shields on it and some places seem to have wave after wave of enemies until you get a foothold. It isn't until you get a few teammates under your belt, and you get your abilities filled out a bit that it gets somewhat easier. Getting Mordin first is critical, as you absolutely NEED his incinerate ability. Almost everything will now have armor that you have to cut through first before you can even think about using lift-type biotics on them. But getting Mordin is the problem. Expect to die a LOT! Once you get him though (and usually Garrus right after), things get a bit easier. That said ... both the Collector missions still S U C K!

I had problems with those the first time!
For some reason, I had a MUCH easier time when I played through as an Infiltrator (sniper). So much so, that it led me to believe it was somehow an imbalanced skill-set. I don't know about that, though.
What do you think of the Add-ons? Have a you had a chance to go through those? I didn't think they were mind-blowing or anything, but definitely worth the cost of admission. The Thief add on character has a really fun loyalty mission.
Alright, it's decided, then. Insanity run starts at the end of next week (I'll be back in Cleveland Saturday until the next Saturday).
Any tips for those Collector hover thingies (you have to fight one at the end of the colony defense level). Those things are a pain and it always takes me forever to take them down. They recharge their barriers so quickly and then have armor underneath. I think they're called Praetorian? Those are a pain, and abominations are a pain when they attack in pairs or with large groups of Husks.
Like I said, I could go on and on about this game.

I've only played the free-addons. The Zaeed mercenary loyalty quest was pretty cool, but most of the rest didn't add a whole lot to the overall story. It was just a nice extra few missions to complete. The Praetorian at the colony isn't too bad. If I remember right, he attacks by himself (or you can clear out the husks quick enough to get him alone). There is a truck or a large container box in the middle that you can run around and take pot-shots while protecting yourself. He WILL recharge the shield ... there's no way around it. You just need to keep working down the armor when you get to it. Having a guy like Mordin around to incinerate the armor is key. Guys like Garrus are good for the barrier as that power shot (whatever it's called) will take down half a barrier. Fighting the Preat in the collector ship is MUCH worse. You'll have to use the ramps to sort of stay out of line of sight, but you have to kill all the other guys coming out at the same time. Those abomination things are the worst though. Those shockwaves always seem to get you, and when there's a pair of them, they really tear through you. Best strat is to unload on one with all your team's powers, and then just use your heavy ammo to take one down as soon as possible. With one left, you can hide behind a wall or keep your distance and they won't be able to hit you with that shockwave. You can take down husks and other enemies, while avoiding the abomination, and then focus on it when everything else is gone. Again, Mordin's incinerate works great against it's armor. Good luck with Insanity though! Don't get too frustrated because you will die CONSTANTLY.

Ok, that's what I was doing on the Praetorian. The one on the collector ship is hard, but that's mostly because of the other guys that you have to kill. I was just wondering if I was doing something wrong because it was taking me so much longer to kill that thing than any other enemy.
I always got so frustrated playing the Abominations. You just can't hide from the shockwave attack.
The add-ons are not going to blow your mind (or even add anything to the basic story). But they're definitely worth it for the added gameplay. If you are against paying for that stuff, then just pick up the 'Thief' character. She's another Zaeed, but I really enjoyed her loyalty mission since it's pretty different from the rest. Half of it is without combat.
My favorite weapon in the game is easily the Nuke gun. The first time I used it (well, the first time I used it without killing myself) was on Tali's recruitment mission. I was having a lot of trouble getting close to the Colossus. Not sure why I was getting so frustrated, since on subsequent playthroughs I didn't have much issue, but I think with the Geth all over, the Colossus main gun, and the damaging sunlight I was getting my butt kicked. Finally decided to say, "screw it", and pulled out the nuke gun. The way the thing takes forever to spin up, and then at the end, BOOOOOM! When the screen turns back from red to normal color, and the blast has died you're like, "where did all the enemies go?" Always got a kick out of that. Along those lines, take the nuke gun on the side mission where you have to "rescue" those crates from the big robot drones (the big ones w/ machine guns and rockets). As soon as you get off the shuttle, walk about 5 strides to get line-of-sight on the middle of the level where the robots start. Shoot the nuke gun in that middle area and presto... mission accomplished in about 15 seconds. I always got a kick out of that, too.

So how is your insane playthrough going? Quote:

Honestly, this is probably the hardest part of the game. Any time that thing gets LOS on you, he hits you with his beam, and you have to constantly watch your back with all the other guys running in.
There are a few pillars at the top and bottom, and those are the key. Run to the bottom of the one ramp, and hide behind the pillar to get him to come to you. You can peak out, and hit him with a few pot-shots or heavy ammo hits. When he gets to the pillar, run to the top, and use the next pillar to shield line of sight while you take out the other guys. Use your "wingmen" though. The Prae seems to avoid attacking them, focusing on you instead. So if you can get them behind a wall at the bottom ... they can stay alive long enough to deal some special attacks. Keep going up and down the ramps in a circular fashion to avoid that beam attack, and eventually you'll wear him down. You'll probably burn through you inventory of med-kits reviving your teammates as well.

You can't avoid it, but you can prevent it. If you stay out of LOS, they won't launch the attack. Also. If you can get enough distance away from them ... you have a better chance of not getting hit.

Geeze, I should of used it more often! After I blew myself up the first time trying, I didn't really use it that much (although, I probably should of used the heavy ammo a lot more than I did ... I always felt like I'd run out of it). I never did beat that 3-mech mission ... I suppose that would work! The only times I ever used it was for the mission where you get Legion (Collector Ship) ... and the Terminator guy at the end (and it's a pain in the butt to actually hit him with a slow moving Nuke shot!)
Speaking of the end guy ... I noticed that shooting him in the eye deals a lot more damage than anything else. Makes for a much quicker end battle, especially in Insane mode.

Sorry, haven't started. I've been out of town for a week (I was actually back in Cleveland), and I still have to finish up Crackdown 2. I won't be able to get on the Box until later this week, since family is in town and I picked up a bunch of hockey games over the next couple weeks. All of a sudden I've become pretty busy. I'll let you know when I get through the first chunk of the game. It won't happen for a while, though.
I could see that one part on the Collector ship being the hardest. Good to know I was "doing it right", sucks that I can't really improve my technique against them.
The one skillset I haven't used yet is the Vanguard (the one with the shotgun skills with the special charge attack). Have you used that one at all? I figured that since I play more of a hang back style instead of an aggressive style, that I wouldn't have much fun.

Yeah, I started insane play with a Vanguard and quickly realized it wasn't going to work. Your biotic powers are useless against shielded/armored enemies, and your charge power just stuns an enemy for a second. Worse yet, after a charge ... you're exposed and right infront of an enemy that can cut you down pretty quickly. I did my insane run with a Sentinal. The tech abilities (overload/warp) helped to take down shield/armor, and the tech-armor ability give you a little extra defense, which is much needed.
I'd say go with your infiltrator if you've already got him leveled up. Sents and Infs are going to be your best option. Everything else is going to have some major disadvantages.

I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck! Ever play as the soldier? That was the only one I played as in ME1 just because using biotics and tech was getting me all frustrated. I've done one play through with soldier and thought it was booooooring. I always have secondary characters leveled up so that they have team special ammo, and take that character when I need that ammo.

Started the insane playthrough. Man, it's tough. I'm playing as an Infiltrator again with armor-piercing ammo as my extra ability. Being able to swap back and forth between disruptor ammo and armor ammo is nice and seems to be working fairly well. One thing you HAVE to do is turn off the setting where your teammates use their own powers. I wasn't used to micro-managing that so much, but I am now!
So far I've recruited Mordin, Garrus, Jack, Zaeed, Kasumi (the thief). I've been working through all the secondary missions to get those out of the way before grabbing Grunt and moving on to the first Collector mission. There are a couple tank missions which are alright, and then the Overload add-on which takes a little while. I've found that working through those first makes it a little easier. Those side missions tend to be easier than the main-story missions. If you do those first, you get the extra XP and money which makes your abilities and equipment just a little bit better when you get around to the harder missions. Also, it helps that I'm a completionist.
Haven't died too much yet, but I also haven't tried the first Collector mission.

Honestly, once you get Mordin, it's MUCH easier (outside the collector missions). Sounds like the ability to switch between shield shreding ammo and armor shreding ammo helps a ton too! I never bothered too much with the ammo, but it sounds like a good tip.

So I just finished the First collector ship mission (the one with the Praetorian) on Insane. It was pretty tough, but I actually didn't die. I did cheat on the Praetorian part, though. I waited until he got about halfway across the open area, cloaked and pulled out the Cain (nuke gun). Nailed him with a shot, but he didn't die (I was like, "WHAT THE HELL!"). Took down his barrier all the way and his armor to ~1/4. Garrus with his armor-piercing ammo and Concussive shot, Mordin with Incinerate, and me as an Infiltrator (Incinerate and Armor-piercing ammo on my upgraded sniper rifle) is a pretty nasty lineup for Collector missions. I nearly died when you get mobbed by Husks during the escape. I need a better plan of attack for those situations, otherwise the second Collector mission is going to be a disaster. Using biotics that have Throw won't even work because all the husks have armor.

Shotgun worked for me, but you probably won't have it on an Inf. Best bet is probably to just run.

I heard ME2 is the XBOX360's crowning achievement. Now, I haven't played ME2 because I own a PS3. Uncharted 2 is best game on the PS3 in my opinion. I can't wait for ME2 to be released on the PS3 in January of 2011. If any of you have played both, which game do you like more?

I'm not sure most people would say it's their crowning achievement, but I would definitely agree. Last night I stayed up waaaay too late finishing up the latest add-on to ME2. I stated several times earlier that, in my opinion, all of the add-ons for ME2 have at least been worth the cost of admission. The latest one (came out Monday, I think), is a must-buy for any ME2 fan out there. I won't get into specifics, but it has a very interesting story to it (I'd say it adds more to the main story than any baked in side mission in the game), has a bunch of somewhat interesting rewards at the end (not too sure about some of them just yet, I'll have to keep going to find out), you meet up with an old character in a more meaningful way, and the combat is intense. I had a harder time with this than the first Collector ship. I also have it set to Insanity difficulty. Can't recommend this one enough.

I haven't played Uncharted 2, so I can't really comment on that ... isn't that a sandbox 3rd person game sort of like GTA?
The best part about the ME series is the story telling. The game play is great, but the whole story that's told really emerses you into the game, and it feels like you're watching a really good movie.
I'll have to check out this new add-on if I get the chance. Just been superbusy with other things lately.

Have fun with it =)
Just so you know though ... you'll make a lot of conversation decisions with the little Bioware decision dial. If you select the top option, it almost always scores points in the "Hero/Paragon" stats ... select the bottom option and you get more Renegade points. Middle one has no effect either way. The more Paragon/Renegade points you get, the more conversation options you might get later.
You may think that a decision will drastically change the outcome of a situation, but it almost always stays along the same story line. Some decisions might make a mission harder or easier though ... and may also cost some lives down the road as well.
It's recommended you play one way the first time (like all renegade answers), and then play it the opposite way the second time. You'll get a whole new experience.

I'll echo excel. You want to choose whether you're going to be Paragon or Renegade. The game sort of punishes you if you're wishy washy.
One thing that also made it easier for me is doing the side quests before the primary storyline quests. These missions tend to be easier than the primary quests, and offers you the opportunity to strengthen your character's abilities and upgrade your weapons. You'll probably figure this out pretty fast, but you have to use cover like in Gears of War.
Enjoy the game, I know I did. I'm also getting tons of extended value out of the games, much more so than any other game I've played. Let us know how your playthrough goes.

I will. I wasn't able to play last night like I had hoped, but I think this weekend I will get to play a while. I will be starting with ME1 first. Thanks for the tips!

The last boss battle is f'ing IMPOSSIBLE on Insanity.
A little frustration boiling over, can you tell? :-p
Any tips, Excl? I had Garrus and Zaeed, but now I'm thinking of going with Zaeed and Grunt. One of those big shots kills both instantly, and those morons keep running out of cover.
I'm thinking of just setting up shot on one side of the level in order to keep from getting flanked. Staying in the middle is just brutal. Any power weapons that make it easier? I don't see any, I might just save power weapons and sniper fire for the little guys that keep coming.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I got stuck on the mission where you're checking out the downed collector ship that a group of turians managed to subdue... (trying to be as vague as possible as to not reveal anything, it's a moderately pivotal point of the second game)
On the topic of being 'wishy washy' as to picking Paragon or Renegade. I started the second game with my transfer from the first, I had access to both Paragon AND Renegade chat options right off the bat but really had no favor otherwise. Now I'm stuck and debating playing through from the first game again just to have a sense of consistancy.
I just can't get off that damn ship!!! It doesn't help that I typically suck at these kinds of games. Is it just me, or does the AI seem borderline stupid at times in ME2 compared to the first one?

i played ME1 over the weekend between football games. I can finally contribute to this discussion. Where has this game been all my life? geez i only played through Eden prime and back to the ship, but I am already sitting here at work thinking about playing it tonight. I made an infiltrator on normal difficulty. He is a sole survivor who's parents were in the alliance. the story and dialogue have me hooked already! i am choosing all paragon options. thanks to you guys for giving me tips on being consistant with my dialogue choices. i have a feeling it will pay off

Ooh! One other suggestion ... The converstation options on the right will usually give you your pargon/renegade decisions. BUT, the options on the left of the dial are usually really good for information. On the first play-through, I HIGHLY recommend clicking all the information options you can to get all of the back-story and character development. It really immerses you into the game, and you can see why some characters act and behave the way they do. It also make ME2 that much better when you re-meet the charcters from ME1 ... feels like you've bumped into an old friend. Be sure to explore the ship/cities and talk to people too! Much of the crew will have at least one conversation available ... and most of the main characters will have new conversation options after every main-story mission.

I always played with Mordin and Jack/Tali (mostly because you have to if you want the perfect ending). You can use Tali instead of Jack, but only Mordin really helps you with the "incinerate" ability. So by final boss fight ... do you mean the terminator dude? I'm assuming you knocked him off of his connections? The key is the "eye". That's really his weak-point. You can shoot him in the chest and get some damage, but it goes much quicker if you hit him in the eye. If you really want a challenge ... get out the nuke-gun and try to time a shot to hit him in the face! You'll get only one shot at it (so you can reload the game if you miss) ... but if you happen to connect, it takes down about 1/3rd of his health right away. Use your "unity" charges (if you still have them) to rez your teammates when any new collectors come down. Use them to finish off those guys, and then set down some way points behind walls to avoid those mega-blasts. (You're using your waypoints right?) But just keep aiming for that eye. It goes down much quicker when you do.

What part are you getting stuck on? The two toughest parts of that mission (if I remember) ... are a few parts with those abominations, and the very end part. For the Aboms ... keep your distance, and try to use cover if you can. If they can't see you, they can't hit you with that shockwave blast. They're really slow, so you can take your time hitting them as they lurch their way towards you. If you keep your distance, then the husks that pop up with them are easier to deal with.
As far as the teammate AI ... you REALLY need to babysit them, but it's like you get three guys to play with instead of one. Use the waypoint system to get into a covered position, and use their biotic/tech abilities as soon as they are off of cooldown. The best thing about your teammates, is that they never run out of ammo, seem to have a better biotic range, and don't have any Line-of-sight issues. So you could bury them behind some boxes, and still crack-off a bunch of their biotic attacks.
An effective strat I've used is to set my teammates to cover behind me, and then draw the fire of all the enemies while in cover. The enemy AI seems to ignore your team-mates, while you have them do all kinds of biotic attacks ... and you don't have to bother wasting your ammo either.

I think my big problem is I ran out of Med-kits on the last part, after I have terminator fall down (don't want to spoil the story for those that haven't played). To answer your questions, yes I use waypoints (otherwise my teammates are dead after the first mega-blast.
What happens is, I start by running up behind that large, middle barrier. The problem is I keep getting overwhelmed there because I eventually have enemies flanking on both sides. Really, what happens is it's just a war of attrition that I keep losing. I run out of medkits, so eventually it's just me fighting against waves and waves of enemies, plus the terminator. Also, harbinger seems to go nuts after a while and keeps "harbingering" guys as soon as I put him down.
I'll try Mordin and just stick him somewhere in the back so he doesn't get killed too quickly. I'm also thinking of bringing Grunt since he's such a tank and can stay alive longer with his fortification. Also, instead of setting up shop in the middle, I should probably pick a side and stick there in order to keep all the enemies in front of me. Why do you say to bring Tali or Jack for the "perfect ending"?

Its the mission in ME 2 where the Turians down a collector ship and you go in to investigate it before anyone else can. I don't know what it is, but I just can't seem to beat that mission. It owns me, every single time. Now that I understand the Paragon/Renegade dynamic a bit better, and I understand the loyalty system in ME 2 much better. I think I'm going to start over from ME 1, and go total Paragon, then when I get to ME 2 I'm going to get the loyalty of the party members I need, rather than randomly like I did this play through.
The game beat me, I give up on these kinds of games easily.

Might want to reload the game at that point and try to beat him without using up your medkits. Might be worth the added frustration there, as you'll want your medkits for the far-harder second part.

The trick the the "harbringer" problem is to just take out the other two first. They can only HB one guy at a time, so if you take out the bodies first, then it has nothing to jump to. The Collectors are much quicker to take down than a HB, so try it that way. You can also do a bit of hiding from the HB, while taking shots at the Terminator. Just make sure you find a wall to hide behind for those big-blasts.

Mordin is great for this mission, as incinerate takes down both barriers and armor ... so he'll help a lot on those Collectors and HB's. If I remember right, I found myself backing up a bit to get some distance on the Collectors, but then heading back to the middle before the next group came along.
Have you ever had a "perfect ending"? Where none of your teammates die? Maybe it doesn't matter as much once you get Zaheed ... but originally you would lose some of your weaker teammates in the "hold the line" group if you brought your stronger guys with you on the final assault. To avoid that, you'd send one of your weakest players back to the ship with the crew ... and use the other two in your final battle. That left the strongest guys to "hold the line".
I'm guessing the addition of some of the expansion guys help that group considerably now.
