Half a game out of first only in the loss column. There are many that said they would fade, but they are still hanging strong....and just took 2 out of 3 from the first place Braves. Seems like a good a place as any to start having a REDS thread for each series, just like the Tribe fans had on here at one time. 3 game set against the Cardinals in a week, but lets take it one game at a time and take care of business: Reds-Pirates PreviewAfter enjoying a winning home series against a first-place team, the Cincinnati Reds hope to avoid a letdown and continue their success over the club at the bottom of their own division.
The Reds try for a third straight victory overall and against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night at PNC Park.
One-half game behind NL Central-leading St. Louis, Cincinnati (59-47) fared well against another division leader by taking two of three from Atlanta over the weekend. Brandon Phillips hit a tying triple and scored the go-ahead run in the Reds' 2-1 win Sunday.
"Things seem to be clicking our way," pitcher Bronson Arroyo told the Reds' official website. "We play hard, keep it close and give ourselves an opportunity to win."
Cincinnati has won four of five and now heads to Pittsburgh, where it swept a three-game set from the Pirates (36-68) on May 10-12. The Reds have allowed 10 runs while winning six of seven against the Pirates, who look to avoid a fifth consecutive loss.
"We're going back on the road where it's always tough, no matter who you are playing," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.
Phillips is 8 for 23 with seven RBIs in his last five games.
Joey Votto went 1 for 8 with four strikeouts in the last two games against Atlanta, but is batting .426 in his last 11 overall. The NL MVP candidate is 6 for 15 with a homer and five RBIs in his last four games versus Pittsburgh. He is 4 for 7 with a double, triple and home run versus Pittsburgh's scheduled starter Ross Ohlendorf (1-8, 4.35 ERA).
The right-hander appears set to make this start after being hit in the head by a line drive in the first inning of a 6-2 win at Colorado on Wednesday. Ohlendorf was able to walk off the mound on his power and maintain his regular routine between starts.
"(He's) very lucky, very lucky," manager John Russell told the team's official website.
Ohlendorf, 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA in four starts since beating Philadelphia on July 2, has not been so lucky against the Reds. He is 1-2 with a 4.09 ERA in four starts versus Cincinnati, including 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA this season.
The Reds counter with Travis Wood (1-1, 2.87), who looks to build on his first career victory. In his sixth career start, Wood allowed two runs and struck out six in five innings of a 10-2 win at Milwaukee on Wednesday.
"It feels good," Wood said.
The left-hander will make his first appearance against the Pirates, who were swept at St. Louis after falling 9-1 on Sunday.
Rookie Jose Tabata and Lastings Milledge each had two hits for Pittsburgh, which has been outscored 30-5 during its four-game skid.
Budding Pirates star Garret Jones is 2 for 15 in his last four games, and 6 for 36 against the Reds this season.
Acquired in a five-player trade with Arizona over the weekend, catcher Chris Snyder could be in the Pirates' lineup. Snyder is batting .231 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs. web page Let's go Redlegs!!!!

Good luck to the Reds from here on out.. I'm hoping for a Reds/Rays World Series so the networks can complain that nobody is watching.. of course nobody is watching because the networks spent the entire year showing us the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox and Cubs... So only the most avid fan even knows who is on these other teams...

I have been catching them on the radio when possible, listened to some of yesterday's game in fact.
Here's hoping they hang in there until September and make a run at it.
Only two games out of the wild card right now, so that option is still available if the Cards put some distance between themselves and Cinci.

Yep! And we've won the World Series multiple times in my lifetime. Not many Tribe fans can say that....but this isn't a smack thread now is it?

Didn't plan it this way D.....was actually going to start it at the All-Star break but never got around to it. Now that we are 2/3 of the way through the season, seemed as good a place as any.

i root for the reds and i'm a browns fan. indians are my team, but i don't feel the same way with the bengals that i do the reds. i went to a reds game when i was a litlte kid and had a great time. i think i even had a reds shirt at one time.
plus, i'm in the chicago, and can't stand the cubs, so anything to go against them.

I grew up closer to Cincy than Cleveland. My dad was a Browns fan so I'm pretty sure that's how I became one. One of my first sports memories was of watching Eric Davis and the 1990 Reds win the World Series over Oakland and the first professional sports game I went to was a Reds/Cubs game in 1992. My dad is a Yankees fan so I kinda just started rootin for the Reds on my own prerogative.
I root for the Browns and Reds first off, I pull for the Indians in the AL (except when they play Cincy), but I do not like the Bengals
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

It's all good. Since my Bucco's are about 14 losses from clinching their 18th consecutive losing season, I'm pulling for you guys in the Central - getting a bit tired of the Cardinals dominance. Not that I hate the Cards or anything, just would be nice to see someone else win the division. Hopefully we'll give you a series. The Pirates play pretty close to .500 ball at home - they're just a travesty on the road. I pray that Alvarez can turn into "our" Votto - but right now throw him soft and outside and he has no chance. Walker and Tabata have been great since coming up so they provide some hope and should we have a lead with Hanrahan and Meek coming in at the end, I feel good about our chances.... Just that that only happens about once a week lol. McCutchen and Jones are solid players, but I think they're having down years. Our rotation is an absolute joke - a bad one at that. I envy your young rotation. Good luck to you guys, here's to a good series

These stories have been told on here countless times. I grew up in the Dayton/Cincinatti areas and always remember my Grandparents watching the Reds on tv while listening to the radio. It was always a special, family time.
Hated football as a kid. As a teenager, met some older friends that were Browns fans and the rest is history.
Simple, really.

Not a Reds fan, but I do like to see them do well. Unlike the Bengals, their fans love the Reds.
Not saying attendence hasn't been down there, because it has. Every team has lower attendence when they struggle. But generally speaking, Cincinnati is a baseball town.
I can definitely see how someone from the Dayton area like myself and Michelle could root for the Reds, while hating the Bengals.

Ewwww, I agreed with Topdawg.  Being away from home for the last 5 months, listening and enjoying a good season for the Reds on MLB has helped bring some of home to me, and it's exciting! Keep it going Reds!!!

I suppose those of us that are Reds fans don't understand why people are so surprised or confused by it. There are plenty of Browns fans that root for other sports teams besides Cleveland's. Also, the Browns were the only Ohio team for many years and the Reds are the oldest team in baseball, not everyone down this way switched to the Bengals. That, and I'm tired of telling my story over and over.

Like many others on here I grew up watching the Browns with my dad and listening to Reds games on the radio.
There was nothing better than relaxing outside on a summer night while listening to Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall broadcast Reds games on the radio. I really miss the Old Lefthander.

It is easy....the greatest baseball team and the greatest football team in Ohio!
Reds and Browns a no-brainer! 
I grew up in Dayton, watching the Browns on television with Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly, Lou Groza, Frank Ryan, Gary Colllins & many others!
I was also attending Riverfront Stadium in Cinci.........as a kid watching the Big Red Machine in the early 70s.
It has been mentioned here many times!
Cincinnati is a baseball town.
Cleveland is a football town.
Go Reds & Go Browns!
And I live a thousand miles away from both!

For me it was simple. My dad was a browns fan and my grandpa watched the Reds game on TV all the time. The only pro sporting event I have been to has bee the reds. I've been to 4 games this year.
I wish they would let Rhodes become the closer...I hate Cordero. Also Hesiey should be starting in CF.

My story is kind of the same as all the others. My dad is Browns fan so i grew up watching them and fell in love, as for the Reds my dad isn't really into baseball but my grandparents (dad's side), uncle and cousins were and they were/are Reds fans so i grew up watching and going to the games of the Big Red Machine.

I'm sorry but I can't recall who it was that said recently they were going to a Reds game for the first time and wanted to know what to watch for.....and I said Chris Heisey. This kids gonna be a real good one!
My Reds fan story (again) in condensed fashion:
Growing up in the late 60's early 70's, the Tribe sucked and you had to hunt hard to even find them on the radio. The Reds had tryouts each year in my hometown, and they were a team to root for as well as identify with. There was no internet and only a few television channels. In the backyard or on the sandlot I would pretend that I was Pete Rose.....Johnny Bench...Don Gullett.....Clay Carroll....Dave Concepcion....Lee May.....Tony Perez....etc etc etc. Baseball was the national pastime.....Sparky Anderson was a charismatic and smart manager. Some of my fondest memories are sitting on the porch with my mom and dad listening to Marty and Joe call a Redlegs game on the radio.
Cards lost while the Reds won, so now we are back up on the teeter-totter.

that was me. let's say he had a bad day. he went 0/3 with a SO and misplayed a ball in right that let the Stros tack on a run. directly after that, he was pulled from the game for Bruce.
that was just a bad day for the Reds in general though. Leake had no control and Votto was the only player to make decent contact all day on Rodriguez whose fastball had good movement.
Gomes made a spectacular play in left though. spectacular.

Mine's a little different. My dad was a Reds and Browns fan because both teams were around first. And I naturally followed his sports allegiances.

yeah by 10 or 12 years, something like that.
although someone said they were the oldest team, i don't think that is true although cincinnati did have the very first pro ball team.
i believe the cubs are older than the reds.

actually, now i'm not sure.
baseball reference says the reds were 1882-present day, with 1882-1889 being in the AA (american assocation)
but if you look in the nl standings of the years 1876-1880 a team called the reds was there, but when you pull up their franchise history it only goes those years. weird.

Indeed. We used to have the tradition of opening the season for the League.
It's nice to have the Reds in contention at this point and this year I do think that the opportunity will remain into the Fall because of our pitching.
