Brett Favre told Minnesota Vikings officials on Monday night that he will not play in the 2010 season, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Fox Sports reported. Favre, 40, who has consistently said throughout the offseason that he was unsure if he'd play this season, is expected to make a public statement later today, the paper said. The Vikings have not commented on Favre's status on Tuesday. Fox Sports reported that the Vikings hope Favre will change his mind. ESPN reported that Favre has been sending text messages to teammates in the past day. Favre's agent, Bus Cook, did not respond to a message seeking comment from USA TODAY. FAVRE WATCH: What Favre has said about a potential return since January Favre had surgery on his left ankle in May, and he told USA TODAY last month that he just couldn't decide if his body would hold up to the stress of a 20th NFL season. But Favre has been through this before. In 2008, he retired from the Green Bay Packers in March only to return in July and be traded to the New York Jets. He then retired in early 2009, only to make a comeback for last season. He initially told the Vikings in late July 2009 that he would remain retired, but changed his mind by mid-August. Vikings coach Brad Childress has said he's content to wait as long as possible for Favre, and believes he only needs 2-3 weeks of preparation for the season. Link

I was a GB / Favre 'fan' when the Browns left (the whole small market city owning their team appealed to me then)
I thought it was fine that he came out of retirement and asked for a trade. GB moved on and he wanted to as well.
But, when he quickly burned the bridge in NY and basically forced his way to Minnesota, that is pretty unforgiveable.
Kosar (while he still had good years left) wouldn't have gone to the Steelers. You do not go to your main rival. You just don't.
So, if this ends up killing the Vikings for the year, well so be it. Their own fault that Sage Rosenfel's is their backup plan anyway.

Brett could have done the classy thing and told the Vikings before the draft that he wasn't going to play in 2010. I'm sure Vikings fans are furious right now.
It wouldn't surprise me if Brett came back a month from now saying he's feeling great and wants to play again.

Bull. I'd still bet my next mortgage payment he's playing this season. As Kornheiser says on PTI regarding Favre waffling, "When he's not in uniform and on the field game 1, I'll believe him."

I like Favre...always will. Yes, some of his deeds are not the best, but the guy performs and he doesn't "just hand off to Adrian Peterson" as one poster says. He won 3-4 games by his play alone.
Look out for the Packers this year....they'll clean up now

the Vikings lost faith in Tavaris enough to overpay the Texans for Sage in draft picks and overpay Sage in a contract (before they got Favre). Tavaris is on clipboard duty in Minnesota and is just praying he can make it 5 years so he gets a NFL pension.

You think Favre is working his way to just playing in the playoffs? For the last few years he has missed camp, this year he will miss the first half of the season, next year he will show up and decide he wants to play in late December..

We'll see. Remember that Favre told the Vikings we wasn't going to play LAST season, but changed his mind after they broke TC. There have been hints throughout the summer that his ankle wasn't coming along all that well, however. Maybe this is the real deal. Still, if I were BSPN, I wouldn't retire all their "Favre-Watch" templates just yet.

The Vikings have already proven they'll bend over backwards for Brett.

I knew that his last three teams were interceptions (All playoff killing picks too) ... but I didn't know he threw passes for Atlanta ... looked it up. Low and behold, 4 attempts, 2 intereceptions. But he's a GUNSLINGER man!!
Poor ESPN ... their two biggest media whores are now retired and locked into a 6 year deal.

You like him? After these shenanigans you're the only one. All the Vikings fans will hate him. If he told them he wasn't coming back they would have had a shot at McNabb, Campbell, or even the greats like Delhomme or Anderson.
If the Vikings are 0-4 with crappy QB play, there is no way he doesn't come back.

I bet that's exactly what he will be remembered for.
He was a great player ..... but all of the players in the Hall of Fame are great players. It often becomes their personal strengths, quirks, and personality traits that come to the forefront once the discussion becomes one concerning the greatness of retired players.
The overall picture gets closer scrutiny than a play or a game.

It's like ... say, Deion Sanders. He is generally acknowledged as a great CB .... yet the things many remember about him more than any particular play during his career was his general attitude, his high stepping showboating "look at me" approach on the field, and the way he jumped teams.
One thing I heard back when he played was kind of funny ........

Maybe it's because I dislike Jordan....but I remember everything about him. The awesome play, the gambling (to which the NBA made him take a break), playing for the Wizards, the drafting of Kwame Brown, and his awful HOF speech.
He's on the Mount Rushmore of best NBA talents ever, no doubt. I haven't forgotten the details.

Not to mention Jordan won championships before baseball and after baseball, he is considered the best player to ever live and there are only a couple other people even in the discussion and they aren't Jordan..
Favre is a great QB in the pack with a bunch of other great QBs.. these other factors will be discussed.... he won a single super bowl, a couple MVPs.. but he is widely known as much for throwing the game killing INT as he is for throwing the game winning TD...
Not to mention this whole "retire" then "unretire" thing is going to have his name on it.. every time from this point forward that a high profile professional athlete does this, the name of Brett Favre will be brought up...

I don't think we'll remember him screwing the Vikings. I think we will remember him as a great player who always wanted the spotlight on him. The guy is selfish.
For me his legacy is tarnished.

And Desmond Howard won the MVP in that Super Bowl too. Not Brett (though he played well enough to win the award - 3 TD's [2 passing and 1 running]).
Favre is "one of the all time greats" for sure. Top 10? Sure. Where on that list can be debated.
I think he throws too many picks to be truly effective as a QB...if I were picking my QB on my mythical fantasy team of the 90's. And he's been a tremendous distraction off the field for far too long. But I'd still take his career over what we had over the same time.

Yes, to your point, I think it will impact his legacy a little. He's supplanted boxers as the poster child for retiring then un-retiring and repeating that over and over. If Peyton Manning does this in a few years, we'd all say, "He's pulling a Favre."
I just don't think his legacy is all that great to tear down to begin with. He's probably known for his playoff implosions and regular season interception totals as much as his "just looks like he's having fun out there" supporters. He's very good....but also very bad at times.

would it be a big deal if the media didn't blow it out of proportion and have a new story every other week on it?
The guy was amazing last year. I'd take him to start for the Browns in 2010 and we'd win 8-9 games minimum unlike the 5-6 wins we'll get with Delhomme in charge.
Yes, I'm a Favre apologist, and yes he's had some horrible postseason games but I rarely turn the channel when he's playing. I can't say that about any other player/team in the NFL except the Browns.
