Bills Inform Schobel Of His Release 2nd August, 2010 - 5:17 pm Jason La Canfora/NFL.com (via Twitter) - The Bills have informed defensive end Aaron Schobel that he will be released.
"Aaron Schobel was informed of the Bills' intent to release him and he is very much interested in talking to other teams as a free agent," Jason La Canfora of NFL.com wrote on his Twitter page.

He had 10 sacks last year, not sure how this makes the Bills better. I bet he ends up in Miami or New England.

He's 32 yrs old. 6'4" 243lbs. Has been a productive sack producing DE. Size would make one to believe he could play olber.

Didn't he effect his release by simply refusing to go to camp?
I have to say, I feel bad for Bills fans. Schobel didn't want to play there. Spiller is a long way off in getting signed. They can't figure out the QB position. They lose a home game to Toronto.
For some reason, I can think of Buffalo being a place that FAs would really hate to go, and that's too bad. I have a real soft spot for them and like when they win (except against us).

I still think they'll be the Toronto Bills (100% gone in Buffalo) OR Toronto/Buffalo Bills (50% of their games in each city) eventually.
Well, isn't Aaron a 4-3 end? We wouldn't take him if we had an open roster spot. Right?

Hey may have, I havent been following his story or the Bills. I know they're notoriously cheap, so I would bet they're trying to low ball Spiller. I know they had difficulty getting their pick in last season as well. They also draft horriblly.

Yeah, I'm not sure about their spending, but I just feel bad for their fans.
I think Ralph Wilson is pretty lost, so that might have something to do with it.
He didn't sign the CBA a couple years ago because he said he didn't understand it (though maybe he saw something all the other owners didn't see until now), and I remember him saying he brought in T.O. because it would bring attention to the team.
But they voted against us moving, and they have a very similar fanbase (pretty long suffering diehards). So, I want them to succeed.

Oh ya, when Buffalo was good, it was a fun show. Their fans are a lot like us. I wish them well....but I don't see them being able to fend off Toronto in all this. There's a reason why Wilson is playing games up there, cause he can't support the team on his own in Buffalo. He's cash poor. Which might be a reason why they're struggling with Spiller.

Their fans got to experience back-to back-to back- to back superbowl appearences. My sympathy for them isnt much. Long suffering fans? In the short run yes, I suppose.

Well, the one Bills fans I know said he'd give all those years back for just one SB win.
And most Indians fans I know would say the same thing of the past since '94. One WS win...and the rest under .500.

I'll take a SB appearance over what we've witnessed since '99.

Ha ha ha...I don't think you're playing the game right. You'll give back all the Browns losing seasons since '99 for one SB year. Who wouldn't?
It's giving back four stright SB loses for one year with a SB win.

I'm done with good teams and contending, better than losing but we still "losers"....I just want to see the Browns win one Super Bowl.

Seems like it would be a tough transition for a 32 year old guy to make the change to OLB.
It would make no sense for a 3-4 team to sign him.

Why, does Belichick need a new waterboy?
Why on earth would you waste a roster spot trying to convert a player at that age? He was a very good DE, but now, at 32 - after never having done it, you want to stand him up and have him worry about covering backs and TE's as an OLB?

They need pass rush and he could provide a pass rushing specialist. Also, Lang is not the player Schobel is.

I just can't see Ralph Wilson moving his team.
Just cannot see it. He fought Modell's move so hard .... nah, just don't see it happening.
I bet he got a pocket full of cash in agreeing to play a game in Canada ...... but that's about the extent of his "committment" to Canada.
Besides, if a team was to move, they would hold out for Los Angeles.

True, but as far as I know, Wilson hasn't made his succession plans public at all.

True, what is he now,,, 92 or 93 years old? something close to that anyway.
My guess is similar to punchsmack,, I think they will be the Toronto Bills after Ralph Wilson dies.. Not one second sooner.... Just a guess however.
EDIT: just checked, he was born in 1918 which makes him 92

Patriots, Seahawks, Texans Interested In Schobel 8th August, 2010 - 6:13 pm NFL.com - The Patriots have joined the Seahawks and Texans in pursuit of free-agent defensive end/linebacker Schobel.
Schobel was released by the Bills recently.
The Texans are considered heavy favorites to sign Schobel, who lives in the Houston area.
CSN New England's Mike Giardi cited a source in reporting Sunday that the Patriots have "strong" interest in Schobel

I am not optimistic about him dropping into coverage, but as a pure pass rusher he could excel.

Yes, but there is the problem.
If he signs as an OLB, he has to drop into coverage... otherwise, you've simply signed a one-dimensional player that will be more of a liability than a benefit.
Sure, he can play the run (theoretically) and he could rush... but if he sucks at coverage... where do you think everyone's TE's and slot receivers are going to be? That's right... on him.
So, now you've got to roll help his way, which is rolling help away from the other side of the field.
All you've managed to do, at best, is to trade weaknesses.

If he signs with the Patriots, for example, he'll probably play DE in a modified 4-3 alignment, or rush LB in a pass rush 3-4 alignment. (essentially the same thing) He would be limited to 2nd/3rd and long situations.
He almost certainly would not be a full time player, or a starter, but I could see him being very effective in a specialized role.

I think one of the reasons the Bills released him was so he could be closer to his home in Houston.
