Already have a wii... had a 360 but traded it in cause I wasn't getting to play it enough. And was beginning to worry about the red lights of death (got the console the first day it came out)... hadn't had a problem yet, but I knew it was only a matter of time.
Well, I should have some more time on my hands. So I'm now back in the console market. Which one would you recommend and why?
I'm leaning towards a ps3 for blueray, netflix, wireless, and a pretty good lineup of games. I'll play anything... but mainly like the mindless pick em up type of games (ie. madden, halo online, etc). On that note, how is the ps3 online community coming? I know 360 was much better in this area before... has it become closer?

i lean more towards the ps3.
i have both, but i play the ps3 more. i still love the exclusives (halo and resistance are the same game to me, but halo is a lot better)
the only thing i hate about the ps3 is the fact that you are forced to install games, and use up hard drive space to do so, but truthfully, it's better for your console when you do that because you aren't constantly spinning your discs.
i think the backwards compatibility for ps3 is a lot better on 360. i actually sold off all my xbox titles that i could get on ps2, because i was having problems playing those games. (i still love the original mercenaries, but it was running like garbage, freezing, screwing up, not saving, etc..) and run it perfectly on the ps3.
on top of the blue ray, and the fact that the playstation has an unbelievable track record for durability.
the 360 is not a bad console, i just find the ps3 much better, i have had one for 2 years.

Ive owned both, prefer the PS3.
I never notcied the X360 online to be any better than the PS3 either.
Either way you cant really go wrong, but I lean towards the PS3 because everyone I know, EVERYONE, including myself has gotten the RRoD.
Also the online is free and BlueRay.

i got it 2 years ago. they fixed and shipped it both ways for me though, got it back in under 2 wks.
unfortunately, my original xbox took a crap like a year or so getting to chicago and they charged me 75 bucks, not only that but they charged me twice and i had to call and go through several people to resolve the issue.
while my ps2 has seen more beatings than whitney houston, and that thing still kept going, i finally passed it on to my girlfriend's cousins who were happy to take it.
i love the 360, its a wonderful system but i have grown to enjoy the ps3, even though i think the 360 might have a slight edge in exclusives.
the most important thing is that the big name games are both consoles, your sports games (other than the show), your call of duty, gta, red dead, etc.

I definitely prefer the 360 over the PS3. Granted, I've never owned a PS3, but my roommate for a year did, and neither of us fired that up all that often. In fact, I think I only saw him play his PS3 once. He used it a lot for Blu-ray movies.
I'm definitely biased, but I made the decision of 360 over PS3, and haven't regretted it. I got the elite (black version) right as that came out. I heard that the elites shipped with larger heatsinks and bigger/better fans, which would fix the RRoD problem. I'm no super-gamer or anything, but I can spend good chunks of time with the sticks in my hand.
Pros: Online system. I use it for Netflix all the time as well. Cons: The thing sounds like a jet taking off every time I fire it up.
Short story: Look at the exclusive games for each console and look which ones you like better. You'll be happy with both consoles, so you have to figure out which games you like.
Or buy both.

Did anybody mention that its free to play online on PS3? Also, from the stories my co-workers tell me, there are a lot more jerks and whiny kids on XBOX Live than on PSN. If you're one of those please get an xbox.

Isn't PS3 coming out with a paid service soon?
I heard that the tradeoff was you paid for a much richer experience with an Xbox. A year-long subscription can be had for $50, and most of the time there are specials which make it even cheaper. Again, I am not familiar with the PS3 system very much.
Jerks and whiny kids are really annoying, and fairly common on XBox Live. Can't argue with you there.

i haven't heard anything about a pay service, but it wouldn't surprise me if they one day did a fee.
50 a year is fine with me though. ya free is better, but if it goes monthly, i wont do it.

Default is $7/month, so if you do nothing, that's what you pay.
What you're supposed to do, though is go and buy a subscription for however long (3 months, 6 months, or a year).
Inevitably, I forget/get lazy and don't buy my annual subscription, so I get charged $7 for one month. It's my annual $7 mistake, but I don't mind too much because I'd rather automatically get charged $7 if I forget than have my service stopped.

i think i'm one of the few who prefer 360. aside from bluray, which i have another system for, there is no real difference. RRoD is no longer an issue after the falcon chipset and especially with the new one that is smaller and sleeker, will definitely not be an issue whereas with the ps3, i always read of the firmware updates bricking them and about the flashing yellow light also. it's not like the ps3 is foolproof.
as for the annual subscription, there are always sales on 12 month cards for around $30, so it comes out to be less than $3 a month. further, netflix is also on the 360 and currently, the only console who doesn't need a disk to run it. furthermore, with the new update, xbox 360 will have espn360 for FREE for all gold members. that means you can watch any espn sport (with exception to nfl) for free streaming in hd through your 360.
some don't care for it, but i'm also really looking forward to natal.

Yeah the pay service has some things i don't care about, like reduced pricing (or free) for certain downloadable games and some other crap. It's still free to play online though.

And they already came out with the 3D gaming capability firware update. I think right now they only have 6 or so 3D-capable games (including PAIN.)

This is probably the biggest deal. Games are what you're buying it for, so start there.
BluRay, NetFlix (with or without a disc), online (paid or free), online community, controller feel, controller battery arguments, free wi-fi (HUGE WIN for the PS3 in my book), and look are all important sub factors.

Actually the PS3 will be able to access Netflix without a disc shortly, they are adding an update to eliminate the disc I believe in October.

like i mentioned before, don't forget backwards compatibility. if you're like me, you still love those old xbox/ps2 titles.
and xbox's is downright horrible. the playsation 3's backwards compatibility is excellent as it was with the ps2 playing original ps1.
i still love on those old titles. gran turismo, final fantasy, mercenaries, the old gta games, jaws (best worst game ever) etc...
huge huge huge plus for me.
i used to be an xbox guy but i just play my ps3 more. still love the 360 but the ps3 is in fact better for what i want.

well a clarification you should make is the backwards compatibility of the 60gb ps3 was excellent. the backwards compatibility on all models after it is far from complete. it's now software emulated instead of chip-based, like the original 60gb, to cut cost. Quote:
On the 60GB PS3, 84 of the 90 games worked perfectly fine, without any problems at all. 4 more had minor problems; 1 required a special controller that did not work with the PS3, and 1 suffered a show-stopping crash.
On the 80GB version, only 50 of the games worked perfectly (just 56.67% of his library). 12 of them crashed completely, 1 doesn’t work online, and there’s the one that required the special controller.
http://www.hardcoreware.net/playstation-3-80gbs-ps2-backwards-compatibility-sucks/
not bashing it, just clarifying for those who may use this as an evaluation of which to get. they both also offer downloadable old titles.

I'd base a lot of your decision on the games you play, and see what's out there for each system ... or if you plan on using your system for more than just a gaming system (like a Blue-ray player).
For me, it was a PS3 hands down. Two of my favorite titles are Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid ... both PS exclusives. My wife also wanted the Blue-ray player aspect of it, so the decision for me was a pretty easy one.
If you're into the Halo games or any other X-box exclusives ... then the 360 might be for you. I believe the X-box has a wider array of games to choose from as well as better on-line play (from what I've heard), so it's really down to personal preference and what types of games you play.

i have the 80gb and have not had any problems with ps2 games, even the ps1 games work well.
but again, there are only 10-15 titles i still throw in there.

I got the 80GB backwards compatiable system, thinking I would use the PS2 ability a lot ... I could probably count the number of times I actually threw a PS2 game in there on my hand. Once you get the much better PS3 versions, you tend to play those anyway.

You know, I was/am the same way. I thought I would be using backward-compatibility all the time, but I can count on two hands the number of times I've played an old game (and I haven't downloaded any old titles either). Every game I've tried to play has been fine.

The only games I bother going back for more are NHL '95 on the Sega Gensis and King of Fighters '99 on the Sega Dreamcast. To me, NHL '95 had the best gameplay of a hockey game ever (arcade-type gameplay - something two people could just pickup and have an awesome, fluid game with). I never bothered with the PS3 backwards games. I did buy Mortal Kombat 2 for $5 off the Store. I played it 4 times in the past year. Don't remember the moves.

We had some late-night battle royals with NHL 95 back in college. That was one of the best games ever! I was the master of that little "spin around the circle-pass it in for an automatic one-timer goal" move.

I have 2 360's, both with the falcon chipset that fixed RROD. I may soon have a 3rd, but the new elite bundle. Xbox doubles as a media center platform for my family as we don't have cable, but use windows 7 media center, tuners, netflix, etc to an extreme. Why pay for cable anymore? Digital tuners work great and pick up the content in better quality HD than you get from cable.
PS3's are OK. But I like more of the features I get from xbox. IMO the blu ray player is not a benefit as I can get a blu ray drive for the PC for 50 or 60 bucks and play it on my xbox...

Metal Gear 1 on playstation 1 just might be my favorite game of all time, of course you know why. I still remember the epic boss fights, escpecially this one with an invisible ninja in somekind of lab or something.

I am a 360 fan as well. I've had mine for a few years now and no rrod but not sure if mine is a possibility or not. I enjoy the games on the 360, gameplay, online, etc. This was my first big console upgrade and I haven't looked back.

Difference is, that recently they actually added a pay service. Sales through xbox live last year topped 1 Billion dollars last year. Do you really think Sony is going to sit idly by, especially after they introduced a pay service?
