So my old computer had a virus and had to be wiped. Before I did that I backed up all my files on an external hard drive, or so I thought. Im missing about half of my music library  Is there a free way to transfer songs from an ipod touch to my new computer? It sounds like there is software out there you can buy, which I will do if need be, just wanted to check with you guys first. I dont know if this software works, which to buy, or if I even need to buy it. Anyone have experience with this?

its been a long time since i had a an ipod... look for anapod explorer. I believe that was the name of a program I used in the past that allowed you to do that.

If its a one-time thing, try a program called Music Rescue (you can find it with a Google search). It will prompt you every so often asking you if you want to buy the software. Just click "no" and it will continue to do its thing.
Or if you're on a PC, just connect your iPod to the computer, go into your folder options and choose to show hidden folders, and you can get to your music on the iPod that way. DO NOT do this if your iPod is set to sync automatically however, as it may try to sync your empty iTunes library to the iPod, erasing its current contents in the process.

adam, have you tried the music rescue? Id like something easy and painless, and it is a one time thing.
Im almost positive my ipod is set to not sync manually but not 100%, because it usually takes 20 minutes to sync on my comp and I think I got annoyed with that. Is there anyway to find out if it is set to autosync?

I have not personally used Music Rescue but I have watched others use it. It used to be linked from Apple's website as an appropriate means of retrieving music. Here is the link, btw: http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/products/musicrescue/If you added music to your iPod by dragging and dropping it within iTunes then it would be set to manage manually. If the music automatically transferred any time you connected your iPod to your computer, then it would be set up to sync automatically.

Use a standard mp3 player and then there's no worry about losing your library  **/waits for the Apple sucks/is great debate to start

MP3 players bluh... any phone nowadays plays mp3's.. and not just the iPhone.. Even my wife's not-so fancy feature phone can play them...
Speaking of phones.. I cannot wait to be able to use and play with my Android phone..  Oh the jy of rooting it and installing 2.2 on it..

So I used music rescue and it went flawlessly. Music, videos, even playists and playcounts. Adam p for DTOTY (dawgtalker of the year)  hip hip hooray
