Just found out I need one.
All I've ever heard if horror stories, about how terrible they were.
Guess I'm just trying to get some of you who has had one to share your experience, and perhaps calm my nerves a little.
Thanks in advance.

I have never had one, though I fear I may need one. My uncle is a dentist and my mom works at the office. She said that a supermajority of people who get root canals have absolutely no problem and the pain is either non-existent or very manageable. There are some that have a lot of pain, but she said they are really few and far between. You'll be fine.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I had one when I was a senior in high school. I had a bad filling that basically ended up killing my tooth. They ended up not giving me any novicane because of its deadness. It only hurt when the little dart end got jammed into my jawbone, not when it was going through the tooth. It wasn't so much that it was really painful, just long. It's a little unsettling lying there with your jaw open that long. If you're prepared for that you'll probably be ok.

I've had dozens.
I knocked my front tooth out when I was 8( I was walking with both hands in my pockets. Trip. BAM. Gone. Well, the root survived but took on massive trauma. For the next ten years it fought bravely to stay but couldn't win the war. It ended up coming up.
For the better part of my childhood, my front tooth was always infected, broken, or in pain. So, having a root canal meant less pain the next day.
I now have an implant (removed the root, filled with bone marrow, inserted a pin, & screwed a fake tooth on to that). Compared to the implant surgery, I could have a root canal while sleeping.
You'll be fine. Ask for the gas.

I had one done about 7 or 8 years ago.
The procedure itself was fine, very little discomfort, and I went with local anesthetic.
The problem I had was after ward, I was out to dinner with my wife for her birthday, and at a fancy restaurant. The anesthetic wore off about half way through dinner. At first I was fine, but then I bit down on something in the gap they had the temporary filler in there and it sent a shocking pain through my entire body.
It took hours and a lot of extra strength Excedrin to subdue the pain. By the next morning it didn't hurt anymore, but was sore. Just had to remain careful not to get anything in the gap until the crown/cap was installed a few days later.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Same experience here....the procedure wasn't any more painful than getting a filling. But I was smart enough to follow the directions and not bite down on it for a few days. I took ibuprofen around the clock to keep the inflammation down.

I had the same thing happen to me when I was 12, only my parents bought a new weed eater and I decided to stick it over my body and I tripped and landed face first. I had to have a root canal immediately that night, wasn't that bad.
I have the same thing you have, a long pin screwed into my jaw bone and a cap on the end of it. Can't even tell it's fake unless you put a blacklight up to your mouth.
The worst experience I had was getting the needle shoved into the roof of my mouth the numb it up.

Same here. It was December of 98 when I broke off my two front teeth. The roots survived, but yesterday I began having a terrible pain in my gum/tooth, so I went to the dentist, and he took X-Rays. Sure enough, it's time for a root canal.
Reading through these posts, and doing a little reading on the 'net, it seems as if experiencing a lot of pain is rare.
Thanks guys.

If your insurance can afford it, go the impant route. You might never had to touch the thing for the rest of your life. Keeping broken roots will have you in and out of the dentist a lot.
Again, if your insurance will cover. Most don't. And it isn't cheap.

Oh and about my story, I decided to stick the box over my body that the weed eater came in. Not the actual weed eater lol. So my hands were down at my sides and I had no way to catch myself. My original tooth lasted me until I was about 23 and it got chipped off again, this time I was in a bar dancing with some girl and she had a beer bottle in her hand and somehow during the dance she managed to accidently hit me in the mouth with it and chipped my fake tooth in half. Then another time I was at Jamboree in the hills and the first night there I was biting into a really terrible and over-cooked bacon cheesburger and chipped my tooth on the bacon. The person who did it did a terrible job on it anyways because it wasn't bonded very well. Then this last time about 2 or 3 years ago me and my friend were horsing around and I had a bottle in my hand and he went to throw something at me joking around and I ducked and hit myself in the mouth with the bottle. I haven't had the best of luck with my tooth I used to work in a dentists office as a lab tech so I never had to pay a dime to get it fixed fortunately. Before my falling out with the company I was in the process of getting a stronger porcelin (sp) tooth put in instead of the composite one I originally had. That never worked out and I have a temporary in there now but it is the same as it was before and I don't have any problems with it. Just gotta be extra careful.

Whenever I need novocaine from the dentist I let them give me the shot - it only hurts for a second or two - and then after they start drilling I hold up a my hand with a finger extended so they'll stop. That's when I say "more novocaine, it still hurts". They'll give it to you. I had two wisdom teeth extracted a couple years back and ended up getting 3 shots, not because it hurt all that much, but because I did not want to feel anything - period. Its bad enough listening and tasting and smelling all thats going on. I don't care if I'm a drooling idiot for hours after, and I'm not one that has a low pain threshhold, but theres something about having someone working in your mouth that puts my back up.
Hold up the hand and say "more novocaine".

I've had 5...and none are as bad as the stories, unless told by total wimps.....and I have white coat disease.....meaning I don't like medical procedures at all.

I'll bet your white coat disease is nothing compared to mine.....
No, I've never had a root canal - and from the sounds of things, I don't want one ever! Not even the pain thing, just, from what has been described here....the mental part of it.
Physical pain I can take.

It's pretty strong.
I had some operations when I was 15-16.....5 to be exact and spent a total of maybe 5 months in the hospital....it was a horrifying for me experience.

I had a tooth that died from getting elbowed in the mouth in a basketball game. I didn't have any novocaine when I had the root canal on it. No pain, just.discomfort from holding my mouth open.

Topdawg, I've had 2 of them in my life, most recently a few years ago. I was worried before the first one but after that I didn't even sweat the second one it didn't really hurt. I was more stoked to leave work early than I was worried about the root canal. My root canals were both on back teeth so I had to open my mouth wide and I aint no McJagger so my jaw was sore afterwards, from holding my mouth open and other than that the pain was quite minimal. I wouldn't even call it pain but more just a little discomfort.

Have an endontist do it instead of a dentist. World of difference, trust me.

It's not as bad as it's been made out to be.
There are a few seconds of discomfort throughout the process. No big deal.
