OK, flame away if you will.......
If we allow just one less sack per game, get one sack more per game, one less turnover, one more turnover, one more yard per carry, allow one less yard per carry, etc.
This +/-16 would mean a huge swing in the wins v. loss and competitiveness of the Browns. Stating the obvious, I know.
But the gist of my theory is, we may be much closer to a good football team than we think.

I agree. I don't think it takes 3-4 years to build a good team. It just takes players stepping up...and while we know we have some holes, I also think we have some players.
If everybody plays together, we can see a significant bump in wins.
We did finish the season strong last year once people started playing together. I think we pick up from that point.

The swing of two turnovers, just by itself, would translate into more wins.

I think you're on the right track and I do think we have a stronger football team than we had last season. Will we be a better team than we all think? That's a story that the regular season will tell. But you're absolutely right, if we can keep the ball, if we can force turnovers and if we can play more productive on both sides of the ball we will win more football games. It's just that simple.
I think we will be much better this year, how much better though. I don't think any of us can truly know that. I'm excited to see it though, I think that tonight's game against the Rams will show us all how we are continuing to grow as a team and hopefully we can improve on the areas we built on last game, and the areas that needed improving, not only that but continue to improve as we move into and through the regular season.
I think "Improvement" is one of the major themes of this season for the Browns in general.

If we keep the good going and get just a little more defensively and in the passing game .....
Well .... we'd have a good team.
Most teams can say a similar thing about a unit or 2.

For the majority of the teams on the losing side in any NFL game, simply getting a stop to change one Touchdown into a Field Goal is the difference between winning and losing.
Forcing one more punt per game can be HUGE.
Alas, it also isn't as simple as those empirics.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I had a boss once,, hell of a good guy. smart, really understood our business like no other person I know.
He put me in charge of a losing group.. I took one look at the numbers and thought, how the hell am I ever gonna turn this thing around? I asked him that and he responded with a question..
he said, How to you eat an elephant?
I looked at him like he was nuts....LOL The answer of course is "one bite at a time"
this is what you are basically talking about. Look at each function within a game,, fix/improve them,, one at a time. you'll get to where you want to go, but you will also improve as you fix each problem
One at a time....
I like your thinking.. no flame from me...

With the physical talent and football skill level these players should be in/at, this ^^^ is a big difference in my mind. I wouldn't care if RAC goes out tomorrow and wins a Super Bowl, I'll take Mangini and what's happening now over anything Romeo did here in regard to the stated premise.

Not to be a downer, but while all this sounds good and reasonable the biggest challenge to increased success is measured by what we've done to improve relative to the other teams. We may be a better team yet we may not win as many games.
I think keeping Mangini was a step in the right direction though. It's not just the players. It's the staff too. The staff drives the culture and the vision ... like any leadership would. I think he believes in the right things and we will start to see that translate to the team. The players need to step up, the coaches need to enable them to do so.
But I think when all is said and done, the Browns will put a product on the field that is something we can all be proud of. The wins may not be there, but the product will be competitive. I simply think the weaknesses at S and WR will be too much to overcome to really make a big splash ... combined with the division we play in.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I agree, Ballpeen and Hamlet. Imagine one more TD instead of a FG; one more sack; AN interception; one less series because our D got itself off the field. One less futile series from the Three and Out Club offense. This list could go on. And it will forgive the occasional big play that is always gonna happen in the Bigs after all; there are flukes and occasionally athletic bigger plays. This idea goes back to old school coaching that taught you to field your best athletes and their desire and hustle will make a break for you. A few good folks makes the lesser better. Great chef is worthless without great service. Go Browns!

I cannot stress enough how important I think swagger and confidence is.. you see teams with a 30 seconds to go and needing 40 yards to kick the game winning FG and some teams look like they are certain they can do it and other teams look like they hope they can do it.. and that makes a world of difference.
You watch teams go through a rough start to the season and for some, you can see it on their faces, it's "We're the Lions, here we go again." But for others it's "We're the Patriots, we'll be fine."
You have to have that confidence and believe in yourself and your team and your staff.... the hard part is that you get that real swagger and confidence through success and winning... so until you have the record to back it up, you need to fake it and that has to start at the top with a belief and a confidence and an ability to pass on that mentality to your players even if they haven't really earned it yet.

It's also desire.. when it comes down to whether or not you get the extra yard by falling forward or don't get it by being driven back.. a lot of times thats just a matter of who wants it more, the tackler or the guy with the ball.

while i didnt agree with that right away, i have come around to your (and Holmgrens) way of thinking-better to have the same coaches.

Our high water mark is 10 wins in 2007. I think in part, because our division was not very strong that year and also I don't think the league took us very serious. Even if we were to have made the play-offs that year I do not think that we ever had a serious chance at advancing in them.
We will most likely not make the play-offs this season, in part due to what looks to be a strong division, but that's not to say we won't be a better team then we had in 2007. I think the franchise is stronger from top to bottom and even through we do not have the serveses of a couple of pro-bowlers on offense we had back then, as a whole I think we have a more talented roster. Weather it translates to wins is still a question that we will have to wait and see.

I remember twice since our return where we were ahead at the end of regulation, only to lose the game. Dwayne Rudd's helmet game and the one last year against the Lions with the penalty on the last play of the game.

The difference between winning teams and losing teams in the NFL is a very small margin. In fact injuries are usually the deciding factor..
Remember the last two season the Browns didn't get bit by the injury bug were:
2001: we made the playoffs
2007: we won 10 games
every other season...we pretty much have been decimated with injuries.
every team has holes...all NFL teams do...the key to winning is leveraging what you do well..your strengths to the max that you can...thats the key to winning...
If the Browns can stay healthy this year..10 wins is entirely attainable...but we have to stay healthy....we get too many injuries...your looking at 4-12...it is what it is..

Injuries are obviously a big deal in the NFL but so is talent and experience. Right now we are lacking experience for sure at a number of positions and talent remains to be seen as well.
When the guys you draft have a very realistic shot at starting and/or getting substantial playing time then you know what talent was already on this team.
Which means to get that 1 extra turnover or 1 less penalty or 1 less mistake you need players that are not injured, have talent & experience. And right now we simply do not have that across the board.
Look at who will probably be getting substantial playing time this year:
Robo/MoMass @ WR = basically rookies here, esp Robo Haden @ CB = rookie TJ Ward / Asante @ Safeties = rookies
So we can spin the numbers any way we want but it's just about staying healthy and having talented players - both of which we've been unable to overcome since 1999.
Healthy Players + Talented Players = Competitive NFL team
That's the equation.

Injuries are important but I wouldn't say they are "the deciding factor".. there are a lot of reasons other than injuries that separates the Patriots and Colts from the Browns and Lions over the last 10 years.

If they attempt 3 more passes over 20 yards each game.
How about this, If they,( when they get to the opponents 30 yard line), start throwing those incomplete passes in the end zone, instead of those incomplete passes on the opponents 15 yard line,
Then who knows what might happen.
What if the Browns came out, and challenged the other teams defense to defend every inch of the field between the line of scrimmage and the back of the end zone, and made a point to attack to the left to the right or to the center in succession on consecutive plays, regardless of the previous plays results. And every down was treated like it was 3rd down and failure to get a first results in a punt.
If they did that then they'd be like the Colts.
But if they continue to always send receivers deep to clear a space underneath and hope to yac for the entire field then we will see the same old Browns.
I hate the yac offense, I hate the yac throws, they are totally bull.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
