Jim Brown needs to give the racist crap a rest.He is starting to get as annoying as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton on the subject.
Yep. They inject it into any situation where you disagree with them. Obama policy's suck? You're a racist in these guys' eyes. Not worth the 6 figure salary, its because you are a slave owner. For Brown to put racist words into Mike Holgren's mouth is pathetic.
I've never like the man. He claims he is one, but if Jim Brown was in the NFL today, he would sitting next to Ben Reothlisberger watching games on TV. He makes Big Ben look like a saint. For those who don't know the man for his "off field talents", please read.
Excerpt From ESPN: http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Brown_Jim.html
"But for all Brown's good deeds and athletic prowess, there appears to be a dark side to him as well. He has been frequently accused of violent crimes, primarily toward women.
An 18-year-old accused Brown of forcing her to have sex after giving her whisky, but a jury found him innocent of assault and battery in the 10-day trial in 1965. He was accused of throwing his girlfriend from a balcony in 1968, but when the 22-year-old woman refused to name Brown as her assailant, the charge of assault with intent to murder was dropped. He was fined $300 for resisting a deputy.
Brown was acquitted of assaulting a man after a traffic accident in 1969. He was fined $500 and spent a day in jail after beating up a golfing partner in 1978. He was charged with rape, sexual battery and assault in 1985, but the charges were dropped when the 33-year-old woman gave inconsistent testimony.
The next year, he was arrested for allegedly beating his fiancée after accusing her of flirting. He spent three hours in jail, but three days later the 21-year-old woman said she didn't want to prosecute.
In October 1999, Brown was convicted in Los Angeles of smashing the window of his 25-year-old wife Monique's car, but was acquitted of making terrorist threats against her. The judge sentenced him to three years' probation, stripped him of his driver's license for a year, fined him $1,700 to be paid to a battered woman's shelter and a domestic abuse fund, and ordered him to attend special counseling for domestic batterers.
When Brown refused counseling, he was given a six-month sentence. He was released from jail in Ventura County (California) in July 2002 after serving less than four months."
------- Stay away Jim! The ceremony is about the honoring of the great ones. Obviously your character isn't great. The only one's you are hurting are the few fans that are still alive that only cared about your yards/carry and not the women you disrespected.

Here's an unedited transcript of Jim's letter to Holmgren. If the guy doesn't want to be there, the Ring of Honor doesn't need him. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/08/jim_brown_says_he_wont_attend.htmlMike, I would hope that you would take the time to read my agreement with the Clevelend Browns. I had no contract, but I was asked to write a job description so that my duties would be clear. That job description included two things that I think are important. As Executive Advisor to the owner, my job was to use my intelligence, and my logic to advise Mr. Lerner. The second most important thing to me was a clause in that agreement that stated that I answered to noone except Randy Lerner. These two thing were highly important to me because I truly believed, with my educational background, having been a Cleveland Brown for 9 yrs, and having a pretty good knowledge of football, that I could contibute in a valuable way to the organization. When you called me for a meeting in your office, there was no conversation about that agreement, no conversation about my duties, no conversation about what I felt, no conversation about my relationship with the players, no conversation about my relationship with the coaches, no conversation about my relationship with the head coach, and no conversation about my community work. Ultimately there was no conversation about anything that I felt was related to my job. Your ultimatum to me was that you would offer me the opportunity of being that of the greeter, that of a mascot, that of a person that would represent special events by his physical presence, and for those things, I would receive a salary of $100,000. All of those things that you offered me would be controlled by you. After that 10 minute meeting, I went to my office with a feeling that I was just fired by the Cleveland Browns, because in my mind, there would be no way on this earth that you would expect me to go against everything that I’ve ever stood for in my whole life. Not wanting to get into a public debate, I left my office and went home. I never spoke to the media, or any of my friends at the Browns, because I truly didn’t know what to say to them. I thought that was the reponsibility of the Browns. I wrote you and Randy a note, and said I did not accept that proposed position, but if I could do anything meaningful for the organization, I would consider it. I took that position, because of my respect for the Lerner family, and everyone that I had worked with in the Cleveland Browns organization. I was able to study your press conference and found your statements to be consistent in the way that you value me, and I observed the comments of the key players that sat by your side, and here was the impression I got: Your most powerful statemnt about me was that, and I must laugh, one monkey don’t stop the show. The two players that were with you, one of them made the statement that he was overwhelmed to be honored, and the other started talking about a subject that was highly important, and that was the pension plan, and the improvement that he would hope would happen, but stated that he was there to discuss the Ring of Honor. I was happy to hear Joe DeLamielleure bring up the pension plan, because right now Mike, I am working with everything I have in my power to be an advocate for a better pension plan and health care services for all the retired players. If you, in your position of tremendous power with the Cleveland Browns, would become an advocate of those two goals, you and I could walk side by side. But in my conclusion, I’ve never danced in the end zone, I always gave the ball to the referee, so you should know I don’t dance. Also Mike, I don’t hang out on the Westside of town. I’m an Eastside guy. I play my golf at Highland Golf Course. I don’t go to the Hall of Fame ceremonies, except on occasions, like when Gene Hickerson was inducted, and I felt very proud to be with Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Kelly in showing our respect for his great contribution, and for helping us become great players. I don’t have any trophies in my home on display. I don’t claim to be the best at anything, and I emphatically do not need validation from any man, so I will not participate in your Ring of Honor. Mike, there’s only one thing that I control in life, and that’s being a man. So let me end with a little humor, because as you say, one monkey don’t stop the show, and as I say “Willie Lynch missed a few of us”, and there will be no Buck Dancing. From #32

Thanks for that.
MUCH different than what is being portrayed in articles, and certainly NOT the racist diatribe the one article attempts to claim that it is. It is a calm and well reasoned refusal. Does bitterness come through? Absolutely, but taking his words at face value, a fair degree of that bitterness is warranted... and an equal amount of it should be directed toward Mr. Lerner.
What it boils down to is that Brown was marginalized by Holmgren and offered a token Dog-n-Pony position, to which Brown said no thanks, and as a result of that insult he is refusing to participate in the Ring of Honor - which is as petty as Holmgren's offer was insulting.
Browns is the Browns

Here's the transcript from the Ring of Honor video. I don't see anything about "A monkey stopping the show" http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/arti...ce-72fa047d7596

Really? The part towards the end where he referred to Willie Lynch wasnt enough to make it a racist diatribe?

While I agree that I don't think the letter was as racist as everyone is trying to make it ... what's wrong with Holmgren's offer? Based on results ... he's lucky to have received the offer that Holmgren actually gave him.

I disagree.
Yes, a lot - a whole lot - of bitterness showed through. But what you are missing is, even in the letter, Brown admits he got to write his own job description - and do whatever he wanted.
What he doesn't say is "hey, I realize that I was nothing but a face - a pawn - for the Browns under Lerner - that much is evidenced by the I get to write my own job description and do what I want clause. No, what I'm bitter about is someone called me out and wanted to change my salary - and that's b.s.......I'm Jim Brown - the Browns owe me, so now I'll go into my corner and pout. But first, I'm going to bring up racism - that should help my argument about losing my free job and being reduced to just $100,000.00 in salary for still doing nothing..........no way - I'm Jim Brown, and the world loves me, except for the racists....and I'll never let the race thing die - even though I respect no one that brings up my rape allegations, and my abusing women allegations. Those were in the past. But this racism thing - hey, it still flies if you push it hard enough".
Or something like that.
He's a bitter old man. He'll never change. He doesn't want to be in the Ring of Honor? Fine. He won't be. No skin off of anyone's back other than his own.
And to try to bring Holmgren down?????? Low class punk move.
I hope the Browns don't offer him jack squat until the day after he dies. He doesn't want an honor - (without serious cash) now, forget him. We'll honor his playing legacy after he dies.

Ah, you probably have it right, and I'm wrong.
Fine - let the Browns do their thing - just put jim on the back burner, mention his name, that's it. Show highlights of the others....just not him.
2 can play his game - and he's just a bitter old man that is upset that he lost a cushy job where he wrote his job description.......and all he got in return was another cushy job with a lower salary.
Oh, and why is it up to the nfl to pay for health insurance for the guys that CHOSE to play in the nfl? There is not one single player that had no choice as to "play in the nfl, or don't". Why should the nfl pay for their health insurance, AND increase pensions? I don't follow that logic.
Those players are paid - even the guys making minimum - they are paid beyond belief for most common joe citizens.

Ok.. I disagree. The purpose of the ring of honor is to pay respect to those who made the Cleveland Browns great. The Cleveland Browns need to be the bigger person in this and give full respect to what Jim Brown did on the field for this team. If he chooses not to be there, then so be it. The ring of honor is not to respect Jim Brown the 70 something year old bitter man, it's to respect Jim Brown the 20 something bruising running back that won championships... so you make a statement that regrettably Jim Brown is not with us today but blahblahblah and you talk about all of the great things he's done.. Be the bigger person.

Where's Lerner in this discussion? Blame Lerner before Holmgren. If Lerner did indeed let Brown write his job description which was to sit on Lerner's left shoulder and talk in his left ear while the rest of the organization reported to Holmgren sitting on Lerner's right shoulder, then Holmgren has no say.

Your timeline is a bit off,Lerner gave JB the job of being his advisor BEFORE Holmgren came in,not at the same time. Once Holmgren came in Lerner turned the reigns over to him,and obviously since Jim Brown is no longer with the team based on Holmgrens decision to offer him a lesser spot, then yes, Holmgren not only has a say,he has the ultimate say, that say was given to him by Randy Lerner.

Brown's had this job for years before Holmgren was in the picture ... much of the reason of the bad records from years past was based on hiring advice given to Lerner through Brown (among others).

I think that's what IRogue was saying. Lerner brought Brown in and let him write his own job description. He apparently gave Holmgren the authority to change Brown's responsibilities and pay. Quote:
The second most important thing to me was a clause in that agreement that stated that I answered to noone except Randy Lerner.
If he didn't then why isn't Brown talking to Lerner about his issues if he was "Only to answer to Lerner".

Even a high school kid knows that a verbal contract isn't worth the paper its not written on. In the absence of a contract, JB was an at-will employee, which means his duties and his compensation could be changed at any time. To act like there was some breach on the part of the Browns is grossly disingenuous on Brown's part. To cast it in racial terms is even worse ... it disrespects the black former Browns who choose to participate.

Sorry for how I wrote that. Yes, I know JB was there before Holmgren. I should have wrote the entire organization reported to the President on Lerners other shoulder.
My point is the same. If this is true, then hang this on Lerner because Brown only reported to him. We know Holmgren (or anyone) would not come in and take the TOP position without full control. Who would want to take a President's position and have someone also working for the organization you have no supervision over? Someone who can undermine you with direct access to the owner? Its insane. Its OK for Jim Brown to be the adviser to Al Lerner, but Al needs to hire him; not the Cleveland Browns.

If Brown was hired and/or retained by Lerner and dealt directly with Lerner then I think Lerner should have been the one to demote him or discuss a different role.. I still think Brown is acting like a baby but Lerner dropped the ball if I understand the facts correctly and he delegated this task to Holmgren... At the very least Lerner owed Brown a face to face discussion that he now reports to Holmgren before Holmgren calls him in and tries to demote him...

They still played the game by choice - they weren't "drafted" as in a military draft, where they had no choice but to play. They played because it was fun.
But, regardless - they need to talk to their union. Let the union put the money up. Oh - that's right, the union that swears to have the players best interests in mind won't pay. Hmmmmm..........

We don't know if that took place or not. I'd say it's possible, considering that Brown seems more upset with Holmgren than Randy.

Which is why I said... "if I understand the facts correctly"
But whatever deal Jim Brown thought he had, in walks Holmgren and asks him to take a greatly reduced role.. I can sort of understand why that might tick you off.. Holmgren the outsider with no Browns history comes in and tells you to step back...
Now I know that people will point to the $100K for doing very little and say he should be happy with that deal but it's not always about that...

Having grown up in the 40s and 50s, being a Brown's fan and reading the 3 newspaper sport's pages. I can say JB was a great runner and a not so great team player. JB did not like to block for other runners or the QB. He was appraoched about not wanting to block several times. His feelings were he was runner and did not want to risk injury blocking. JB gave Paul Brown fits at times. Not much is made about JB's reluctance to block for his teammates anymore. The majority of Brown's fans today are unaware of this, since it happened so many years ago.

I agree 100 percent on the pension part and the players have caught some heat for their refusal to give up some money to go into the old timers pension fund, the disability fund is a different beast, that is controlled solely by the NFL and REAL SPORTS did a great piece about how all that works. Both sides and their greed is to blame, but it is a shame that they don't care anything about these guys who have done so much to make the NFL as lucrative as it is.

Screw'em if he doesn't want to participate.
The world moved on a long time ago when he walked away from the game, of his own choosing. He's always been respected for what he accomplished on the field and when it comes to the Browns, that's all that it's about. That's all this honor is about, what he did on the field, and if he wants to turn his back on that honor and be a petty old man, so be it. His legacy in my memory will now be a petty old man.

and certainly NOT the racist diatribe the one article attempts to claim that it is.
Really? The part towards the end where he referred to Willie Lynch wasnt enough to make it a racist diatribe?
It's splitting hairs, but no, I don't consider his letter a "racist diatribe" based solely on his closing sentence. I found the letter to be honest and forthcoming without being angry and violent. However, in true Jim Brown fashion, he had to take a dig because he didn't feel as though he was treated like the star he believes himself to be, and that's the Jim Brown that has been more of an embarrassment than an asset to the Browns organization.
Frankly, Holmgren didn't even have to offer Brown the position he did. Brown certainly hasn't earned it. So if Jim chooses not to take a cushy job where his authority has deservedly been removed, then he should thank the Browns for putting up with his crap for so many years and bow out gracefully.
In short, instead of accepting what is essentially a life-time achievement award from the organization, he's chosen to cry and protest over one move by the new man in charge.
Typical Jim Brown. I'm glad he's finished.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Does this smell funny to anyone else?
We've all heard Holmgren speak in putlic before.. We've listened to his every word since he arrived in December of 09.
Has anyone seen or heard of him ever making any kinda remarks that would lead them to believe that he is insensitive or uncaring? I've not heard that.
If Jim Browns letter is to be believed as fact of what actually was said, then it goes against everything I've ever heard or seen or read about Mike Holmgren.
Everything..
I'm not saying that Jim Browns Account of what happened is a lie, But I am saying that I don't believe it was said the way he portrays it..
Jim Brown has a reputation of some odd behavour.. Mike Holmgren doesn't.
I guess you all just have to chose to believe who you wish...
But I'm not taking his letter as fact.. I just can't do it.

i still think he's gonna show up. i think the relationship is probably lost, but i think he will realize that not showing up is really gonna cement something he doesn't want, within the city and within the fanbase worldwide.
the good thing is, he has a few weeks to figure this out. i think he will.
this whole thing isn't about racism as much as it is about pride.

If you think he cares at all about what his not showing up will mean to the fans or city, you haven't been paying attention for the last 40 years. He quit football because he was fined for missing practice while he was shooting a movie. He went to jail for six months rather than do community service. He blamed fans for making Lebron want to leave. Dude doesn't care what other people think. I respect the guy, but really, he's not going to do anything out of fear some people will view him differently.

All we needed was two maybe 3 more years and maybe people would be holding up the Paul Brown trophy at the end of every season...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I've wondered why it isn't called the Paul Brown Trophy?

IDK, 1965 the Packers handled Jim Brown pretty well. I have a Packers fan in my office that talks about it all the time when we talk about Jim Brown.

I wonder if this is what Eva Bohn-Chin was thinking during the time between involuntarily leaving a second floor balcony and hitting the ground.

That contest (if we're speaking of The Title Game) was a muddy slop fest,....and whenever Jim Taylor ran the ball, it was spotted where his slide ended. Brown's carries were spotted where the slide began,...The Packers did play better defense that day though. 23-9, I think, was the final.
