CLEVELAND -- Browns rookie running back Montario Hardesty, speaking for the first time all training camp, said today "I'll be ready way before the opener'' Sept. 12 in Tampa.

He's expected to start practicing on a limited basis toward the end of this week, but will not see live action until the final preseason game Sept. 2 against the Bears.

Hardesty said he suffered a bone bruise to his right knee in one-on-one tackling drills on the last day of rookie training camp, just a couple of days before the full squad took the field. He was worried at first it was a more serious injury to a knee that was recontructed in 2005 following a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

He said it's been hard sitting out, but that he's been working hard on his rehab, attending meetings and studying film. He also said he hasn't lowered his standards for his rookie season. "I set my standards high,'' he said.

Coach Eric Mangini said Hardesty is "not going to need a ton of reps'' to catch up, because he knew the system in organized team activities and has good instincts.

The Browns targeted Hardesty as their featured back this season after trading a third-round pick and two fifth-rounders to move up to draft him in the second round out of Tennessee.

Glad to hear it. I've been wondering what was going on with him. Would have liked to see him a little this Saturday but as long as we get to see him once before the regular season starts then I can deal with that. Can't wait to see what he's got.

Triple H backfield.

Should be fun.

I thought this painted the injury in somewhat of a different light.

Browns' Hardesty eager to come back from bone bruise
By Steve Doerschuk
CantonRep.com staff report

The latest injury from which Montario Hardesty is recovering is new to him and perhaps a bit strange to all.

The rookie second-round draft pick said he is encouraged that a bone bruise that caused him to miss three weeks of training camp isn’t the same as any of the injuries that cost him playing time during his career at Tennessee.

“Once I found out what it was ... it was something new,” he said. “All those old things I think are in my past. It’s a bone bruise. Something you got to live with.”

He said he suffered the bone bruise late in the Browns’ “rookie camp” that was conducted a few days before the first full-squad workout on July 31. The oddity is that he said the injury, in the knee area, was not caused by hitting anyone.

Hardesty’s absence from practice continued Tuesday, but he seemed hopeful of returning soon.

Had the season been underway when he got hurt, Hardesty said his return “could have been faster.”

“They put together a great plan for me and made sure it is all the way fine when I get back on the field.

When the Browns traded up to draft Hardesty in Round 2, he quickly emerged as a candidate to beat out Jerome Harrison for the No. 1 running back role.

General Manager Tom Heckert liked Hardesty enough to give Philadelphia a third-round pick and two fifth-round picks in order to move into Round 2 and take him at No. 59 overall.

There was a run on running backs. He was the seventh running back taken in the top 60, going one spot after the Texans picked Auburn running back Ben Tate. The next back drafted after Hardesty was Joe McKnight, by the Jets at No. 112.

Has Hardesty’s absence caused him to lower expectations for his rookie year?

“Not at all,” he said. “It’s not going to change my goals at all.”

Hardesty rushed for 1,345 yards and 13 touchdowns at Tennessee last season.

Hardesty
Lauvao
Ward
Haden

Four rookie starters from one draft? I find that pretty impressive, although we were rather devoid of talent at 3 of the 4 positions.

I've been partial to "H-Bomb" myself.

*Edit* or maybe "The 3 H-Men of the Apocalypse"

*Edit 2* or throw in Haden for the "4 H-Men of the Apocalypse"

H3 is a pyrotechnic composition which is mostly used as burst charge for small diameter shells. It is friction and shock sensitive

Good luck. Some guys are just broken. Hope Montario can get healthy, but even if he doesn't we have a really good falback plan of Harrison, Hillis, and Davis.

H3 is also shorthand for tritium, which is a radioactive material that has one proton and two neutrons and is used in hydrogen bombs.

Technically, a compound with three hydrogen (H) molecules would be unstable and probably wouldn't form. At least not for long if it did. And even then it probably wouldn't do anything fun besides being radioactive.

Well ..... if Davis makes the team you could have the 3HD.

Add in Vickers and it's 3HDnTNT.

Davis, Harrison, Hardesty, Vickers & Hillis..... I say we just don't even bother passing, line all 5 up with Cribbs under center and let the defense try to figure out where the ball is going.

Can you imagine Vickers AND Hillis lead blocking for Cribbs???

I say we develop a special package for the backfield of Vickers and Davis with Moore in the slot and call it the Moore VD package.

This is precisely why I haven't and won't be worried about if Hardesty hits the field.. We are good at RB either way.

Ok....I protest.

I have been called a Gator Homer, a SEC homer, and things less conservative than that for saying drop back QB is a thing of the past in the NFL....or will be as the new generation moves up.

What you are proposing isn't that far off. Fewer and fewer H.S. QB's are asked to drop back. They are asked to roll, deliver the ball or tuck and run.

What you outline sounds good to me.

It would be pretty darn hard to defend.

Bravo!

What's nice about all of our 3 H's is that we can substitute any for a multiple receiver set so our apparent deficiency @ WR, might be offset by players we have at other positions......like Moore and any of our HB's.

One of the things I liked about Hardesty is he had to run WR routs @ Tennessee.

People were talking about Peterson the same way. he has overcome his college injury problems and he was a much bigger risk being a 1st round pick.

The article didn't say he didn't hit it on anything it said that no person hit it.
What he hit it on I don't know but it wasn't from contact with someone else?

You can bruise a bone by putting inappropriate pressure on a bone.

It's like having a "light fracture". It also hurts like hell. It can happen from any number of activities that put "imappropriate" pressure on a bone. Lifting can cause one, as can repetitive hitting/bumping, a hard hit, a slip or fall, or many other ways.

Did I mention that they hurt like hell? I have never broken any bones except a knuckle in my right hand, but I did have a bone bruise in my thigh. For about 2 weeks it felt like someone was hammering my leg with a chisel every time I took a step. Luckily mine healed pretty quick.

I'm really excited about seeing what this kid has... I watched him in a few games for Tenn and liked what he was able to do... can't wait to see him in our back-field.

If our back-field stays healthy they could be pretty exciting this year.

Damn, gotta wait one more game to see him in action. Better late than never!

Just excited to see him to see if they hype is real. From the sounds of it, Mangini loves this guy.

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns rookie running back Montario Hardesty is practicing for the first time since injuring his right knee during a pre-training camp workout.

Hardesty sustained a bone bruise to his knee during a 1-on-1 tackling drill before Cleveland's veterans reported to camp. Hardesty said he hurt his leg while making a cut.

Browns coach Eric Mangini said Hardesty, who has had a history of knee problems, will be limited in practice Thursday as the team prepares for Saturday's third exhibition game in Detroit. Mangini said Hardesty is questionable against the Lions "with the arrow pointed down."

The Browns traded three picks to Philadelphia to move up in April's draft and select him in the second round (No. 59 overall). He rushed for 1,345 yards last season at Tennessee.

NO rush... now what we stole Payton Hillis from Denver for Brady Quinn.

We are fine, let the young guy take his time. He will be fine.
