I fell asleep by the time he got in and haven't been able to watch any of the game over. Plus I didn't make it to a single training camp.
How has he looked and is there any chance of him taking the SS spot any time this year? So far what I have seen from Ward leads me to believe that he is perfectly capable of holding down the FS spot.
I'm just curious because i'm still counting down the day's when we can take Elam off the field.
Not sure if Asante is being discussed anywhere, haven't seen anything so if there is feel free to delete this.

just based on what I've read recently, he seems to have fallen off the map for playing time. the coaches have cooled on his development and it would be my guess that he'd have a tough time making the final roster (Grossi mentioned this in an article but I can't find it now)
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Agree,....he doesn't seem to be flying around whacking people when he does get in. I was high on him being a draft "steal. "

Went to the Brown & White game, to a TC, and have watched both preseason games and don't recall seeing or hearing his number called once.

That sucks, I had high hopes for him when we drafted him, and I too thought we got a steal. About the only thing I have heard of him is that he had 3 tackle assists and one solo stop on Sat.

This is odd. Did a TC, watched games; nothing memorable and surprised when I read this post. Assumed an injury or he was getting shuffled for disserent looks at him in other positions, schemes, etc. Puzzling, but it looks tough for cuts unless he shows. I was pleased to get him on the cheap in the draft.

He's a 5th round pick.
There are more reasons that he slipped to the 5th round ... reasons which would keep him off the field this year ....... that TJ Ward, or other, higher draft picks.
His game is not as developed. He doesn't have the same speed. He didn't play against similar competition in the passing game in college.
In short, it's a bigger leap to the NFL for him.
Can he make it? Sure ... players do it every year. Will he? Dunno.

I watched him when he was in in both games. He didn't make an impact either way... didn't see him getting beat in coverage or missing tackles, but was never really in on the play. I obviously can't say whether he was doing well or not, since I have no idea what his responsibilities were, but he didn't seem to hurt us any when he was in there.

Maybe we shouldn't expect a lot from him this early. In fact, I KNOW we shouldn't because Asante might never be more than a 3rd safety. Not knocking the guy it's just he's a mid-round rookie and having one rook safety back there is enough to worry about. IMO we also need a veteran presence.

He won't be cut. They might try to stash him on the PS... But I bet he is on the 53. Just a gut feeling.

You guys are getting carried away. He will be on the 53 roster. If for nothing else, because we dont have anyone else.

He makes the 53 for sure... we need to ante up on our depth at safety anyway... Asante is taking either Ventrone or Sorenson's spot.. I personally think Sorenson gets cut.

Exactly - unless something pops up on waivers we want, there really isn't anything else to do but keep the kid and try to groom him.
If he sits this year or focuses on special teams, that's what many late round picks end up doing so I don't see what all the fuss is.

Oh, I think he makes the team. He might even see a play or 2 later in the year in some defensive packages. I just don't expect him to come in and start from day 1, and/or necessarily be a superstar.
It would be nice .... but I never expect that out of 5th rounders.

I think it's a good thing for a 5th rounder to make the team and get to play on ST while he learns and Grows.. If we get anything better than that out of him, I'm really excited....

So he falls into the specials black hole for awhile. I would expect him to be kept; waivers would be a serious threat perhaps at this point in time. At least I didn't see him beat and hear his name in a bad way. NFL 5th rounder, that is progress of a kind. I wish him luck. Obviously re-tooling.

It's a lot like keeping a guy like Markus Benard, for example. Benard had certain abilities that looked as though they woudl translate to the pro game, but was also lacking in some areas.
He has developed, and will probably be a starter this year.
Assante could become a starter, or he could be a backup/special teams guy. Long way to go until we know for sure which path he appears to be on.

I think he's probably doing just fine, is in NO danger of not making the squad. I'm guessing they're playing TJ Ward at FS with the intention of eventually replacing Elam with Asante.

Mangini and Ryan don't play SS/FS. They play a right safety and a left safety.
Both Safeties have to be able to play both the pass and the run well.

Then why isn't Mike Adams starting over Elam?
Still trying to save face over the Snatchez "trade" from last year?

Obviously because the coaches feel that Adams is not better than Elam at the Safety position.

Why would they do that. They didn't like Sanchez or they'd have drafted him. And for that matter,, what has sanchez done that so spectacular?

I know he was a rookie and all but still, those aren't exactly numbers that inspire confidence...

I just meant that everybody said in terms of draft picks that the Browns got reamed in that deal. Mangini got Coleman, Elam, and Ratliff in addition to the picks. If Ratliff's cut and Elam's a backup, then all they got was a passable starter at 3-4 DE from those guys. Elam being a really good player was part of Mangini's selling point of the trade to Browns fans.
Nothing to do with the player the Jets picked.

That's understandable... but I tend to look at it more in the context of we got Mack, and then players that filled roles last year, and provide solid depth this year and beyond.
So, they got Sanchez.... we got Mack - who could well be a Pro Bowl center - & Coleman as starters and Elam as a solid backup at minimum.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Ahh, I see what your saying... Got it.. but read Purps response and I think you would agree, we didn't exactly get reamed,....

I agree with the net result. I was suggesting Mangini's face-saving as a possible reason to start Elam over Adams. Adams has shown himself to be a solid safety, especially in coverage. Elam, well... he DID lead the team in tackles.

I'm not expecting alot from him, and you never should with a 5th round pick. I'm just curious as to how he has been progressing, just because I remember someone asking Mangini if he would be opposed to starting two rookie safties, and he replied absolutely not, or something along those lines.
I liked Asante before the draft and wanted us to draft him and I was pretty pumped up when we actually landed him in the 5th round, which was at-least a full round longer than I thought he was gonna go.
I was just sitting here yesterday wondering what was up with him, I haven't heard a single thing about him since the draft, I even looked all over the net trying to find some articles but I couldn't find anything. I hope for our sake he develops nicely because if Elam doesn't step it up the guy has to go. imo

The last thing I read about Asante was that he looked great during OTAs .... seemed to be picking things up well in the classroom ..... then fell behind by a fair amount when training camp started.
Not altogether unexpected from a 5th round pick.

Mangini isn't dumb enough to try and save face by starting someone he thinks is inferior. Winning is what he cares about, otherwise he won't have a job.

Assante will be fine...he was a later rd pick...he just needs time to get adjusted to the NFL like most of your later rd picks do.
the most I am looking for out of him this year is to contribute on Special Teams and the occasional nickle/dime play....I think he will be ok..its too early to get into panic mode over him...

If there is a way to turn a phrase that makes mangini look bad, we can always count on AkronJoe to come up with it..
he blamed Mangini for the Brady Quinn trade even though it was clearly the job of Heckert and Holmgren and now he's on to other things... Geesh Joe,, give it up..

So your saying you are always right about Mangini then? That it was him that killed Quinns career? That it was him that traded Quinn for a Ham Sandwich? (did you see Hillis play last saturday, hell I'll take him over quinn easy)
Everything goes back to Mangini with you,, so if you have been that wrong that often, why wouldn't someone point it out....

Just ask these guys how many of them followed coachb around like puppy dogs. My guess is then they'll stop with the ham sandwich and Brady Quinn references. I think it's called selective memory.......

Like I just did in another thread in this forum, I'll remind the posters of last year, where Mangini played Jamal Lewis, Eric Barton, John St. Clair, and Kenyon Coleman over Jerome Harrison, Anybody Else, Floyd Womack, and Corey Williams until the team was 1-11 (and a stomping at the hands of pittsburgh away from getting fired) before he decided that winning was more important than playing his guys. I hope he doesn't let it get to that point again.
You're using logic, but I'm using data. I'd like to believe he's learned his lesson, but my comments are certainly not without historical basis.
And as far as the Akronjoe matter is concerned, disagreeing with somebody in one thing doesn't mean you have to disagree with them on everything, despite what the tailgate lot would have you believe. Similarly, being wrong about one thing doesn't mean everything you say is wrong. AKJ has already come to Jesus about the Hambacle so I think it would be decent to take him off the blacklist.
