glad we don't have to deal with this but DA may become the new starter for the cardinals. many of us said it was the best possible place for DA to go to to become a starter again.

Quote:

Well, that didn't take long.

Matt Leinart lasted two exhibition games as the Arizona Cardinals' starter before coach Ken Whisenhunt announced that Derek Anderson would start the team's game against Chicago on Saturday. The move comes as a mild surprise because Leinart didn't get many opportunities to this point in preseason. What it tells us, bigger picture, is that Whisenhunt hasn't seen enough from Leinart all offseason.

Anderson
LeinartThat pretty much jibes with what I saw at training camp. Leinart wasn't bad, but he was pretty nondescript. Nothing much about him stood out.

This demotion midway through preseason undermines Leinart's ability to lead the team in the future, affirming questions about his viability in Arizona beyond August, let alone beyond this season. This also shows Whisenhunt's willingness to tolerate and even promote competition -- even at the expense of stability -- at the most important position.

It's not an ideal situation, but this is what happens when a team doesn't have an established quarterback. There's no sense in trying to fool players in the locker room. Arizona has too many veterans for that. Whisenhunt will give Anderson an extended look, see how he plays, see how Leinart reacts, see how the team reacts and then make his decision for the regular season.

It's an upset if Leinart recovers from this. Then again, it might have been an upset if he had performed well during the regular season, anyway. That's the statement Whisenhunt is making.

I know what DA can do... and I can't believe that Leinhart is *THAT* bad.

My guess (hope) is that it is just to motivate Leinhart, or something... because if it is an honest open choice between Leinhart and Anderson, they may as well pack it in for the year right now. Trade for Mark Brunell, or something... but don't go with DA. If he is being considered an option, that means they have no options.

Leinart's to lose. Can DA keep it? Awful glad not to need to hate his QB rating here. Better fit there, but good enough to forgive his erratic play and bad habits? Hats off to the ongoing saga of Derek the Nimblenot. Sir Potato Cannon rides again.

You know it's bad when they have to resort to one of our crappy QB's.

Is it possible that Arizona's best two QB's are John Skelton (5th round) and Max Hall (undrafted).

Yikes!

Is going from Warner to Anderson worse than not having a QB for 11 years?

Even Charlie Frye and Quinn were able to beat DA in preseason at points in their careers. The fact that Leinhart hasn't should speak volumes to where he is as a QB.

quinn never "beat" DA. he started over DA but mangini never even announced quinn as the starter, something he said he'd do at the beginning of the competition. looking at how quinn is doing at denver, it's a wonder how we won any games last year with either.

that being said, if they run a bit with beanie, DA should be able to throw to breaston and fitz and look semi decent.

Yea, I think Warner is actually going to be content with his life away from football where as Favre is not....

And I will agree with the previous poster that this is far more of an indictment against Leinhart than it is an endorsement of Anderson...

I can.

Two reasons Leinart's still in the league: 1) he was a top-10 pick, and 2) he got to sit behind a future Hall of Famer as opposed to being expected to be a savior.

Anderson will probably do better than Quinn will in Denver, given. They both stunk here for a variety of reasons out of either's control. (Except for Quinn holding out, that was big/important,...)

Considering some of the highlights I've seen of both Leinart and DA this year, the Cardinals can't be happy with their options.

Leinart is just bad.

DA throws a great pass followed by missing a wide open WR in the endzone with a throw that's 13 feet over his head.

Arizona really took a step back this offseason. The defense took a hit, Boldin is out of there, Warner retired. And now Leinert just looks lost. I watched the cards against the titans- neither qb looked all that great. But the offense did move the ball with DA at the helm. Of course he still proved his accuracy problems (missed wide open receiver in end zone by throwing way over his head), but he does have a nice deep ball and maybe him and fitz can hook it up several times. NOTE to self- do not draft fitz in fantasy football.

For the second time in three years, it looks like Ken Whisenhunt is giving up on Matt Leinart as a starting quarterback before the season even starts.

Whisenhunt announced that Derek Anderson will start Arizona's preseason game this week against the Bears. The plan is for Leinart to come off the bench late in the second quarter and play into the second half.

Whisenhunt stressed the change wasn't necessarily permanent, but it doesn't take a genius to see this is now Anderson's job to lose. The third preseason game is every team's chance for a final "dress rehearsal" for the season.

As ESPN's Mike Sando writes, "Whisenhunt would not demote his starting QB in third week of preseason if he thought that QB had earned the respect of the locker room." It will be tough for Leinart to recover from this.

Leinart played only nine snaps last week, and now he's not even starting. The only question left is where Leinart will remain with the team. (It looks like NFL.com's Mike Lombardi had great information here.) Whisenhunt is essentially giving up on Leinart, no matter how this move is spun in the short term.

It's at this point we have to mention a tip sent us earlier today, warning us that Leinart was already told Anderson was already the starting quarterback. We didn't feel confident passing it along at the time, but the tipster just earned some major points. So now we can't ignore the second part of the email.

The source claimed that Leinart was told the Cardinals were working on a trade to Seattle, where Leinart and Pete Carroll could try to party like it was 2004. That's certainly just a rumor for now, and sounds a little off the wall.

Then again, the idea of Derek Anderson opening the season as Arizona's starter sounded off the wall just a week ago.

Bet WE wish Holmgren would have after some Delhomme games...you'll all see soon enough.

Anderson was the victim of mostly homer fans sucked into Quinns onions for 2 seasons....when DA had 2 above AVG receivers and a solid one (BE + KW and JJ) AND an OC who knew how to maximize his strengths, he was a young QB with a 80+rating, a QB that had to throw to make the run game work....he didn't manage games (that's Quin, Frye and McCoy's ceilings), they called plays with him TO WIN games, because Lewis already wasn't the workhorse anymore even then....those kind of QBs don't grow on trees, folks.

Pre-Mangini DA was a promising QB....yes, he regressed in 08 but so did his inconsistent receiving options and Quinn Saga, injury and the infamous booing of it sure didn't help (and still he managed to throw more TDs than INTs in a losing season)....enter Mangini and his moronic moves and BOTH QBs looked even a lot worse than in years past...I mean let's be honest: we did not have an NFL passing Offense last season, it was a joke...I really think DA flipped on the Browns after the booing and was going through the motions last season...right or wrong, part of me understands this reaction

I have this feeling that come mid-season we will have to read a lot of articles making fun of the Browns for having wasted a decent QB....yes I know DA is a tease but as bad as it sounds he was the most gifted QB we had here in a long time and Whisenhunt isn't the 1st Coach to fall in love with his talent....and let's just say that I think Whisenhunt is a little smarter than Mangini and Daboll combined...Jesus Daboll...don't get me started: the ex D-Coach, ex-WR Coach turned OC in the NFL who never called any plays ON ANY LEVEL, ...but I'm sure Mangini saw him block one day...how Holmgren could retain not only the Penguin but also this clueless apprentice is beyond me really and consequently doesn't instill much confidence in him (who is kind of a trainee at President himself, let's not forget)....anybody else fed up of being the try out org for the NFL? I sure am at this point....yeah, but let's hope...right?

Anderson is the victim of having a great deep ball, and NO TOUCH WHAT SO EVER.

He had the benefit of an easy schedule in 07, AND a good running game, I don't know what you saw, but I saw a Jamal Lewis that ran hard and well for 1300+ yards that season...

Derrick Anderson will always have a job in the NFL, coaches will always love his rocket arm, but you can't LEARN touch... Especially at the stage of DAs career now...

I'm really made I missed the first few minutes of my FF Draft and got Fitz on my team... He's not ganna have a good year...

He was a big arm, but a craptastic QB. End of story.

He was made a Pro Bowler by Edwards, Winslow and JJ bailing his butt out on every damned throw he made in '07.
In '08 he regressed because Edwards got the Dropsies and JJ was history.... leaving Winslow as the only target with enough athleticism and sticky-fingers to regularly bail him out.

Once defenses realized that they just needed to sit deep on him, he was exposed for what he is: a gunslinger that will try to shove that ball into spots he has no business going after and he just doesn't have the touch or accuracy to even attempt it. The times it does work out for him, it is far more a case of the receiver making something happen than it is him making a good throw.

He did not elevate them, they collectively elevated him. Without that trio of exceptional receivers (Edwards WAS exceptional that year), he is what he is now -- Nothing.

not that we need to debate DA since he is no longer our problem, i do disagree with your stance. he was definitely inconsistent but we've seen a lot worse. i truly believe that, had he not suffered that concussion and was rushed back in 08 (the concussion issue now taking more and more steam by the day), he could've been better than what we've seen. let's see how he does in arizona. there, he has a pretty good offense around him. decent line, a couple decent RBS, and more than one receiving option with an all pro in fitz. he may occasionally miss the rb in the flats, which would drive some people nuts, but he'll also make some great completions that'll make people cheer.

i certainly wish him good luck. he showed way more than quinn ever did and to this day, i feel he got the short end of the stick with the fans. hell, i rooted for frye to beat him out over DA but i still feel this way.

I actually think he could have a pretty decent year.

There's a HUGE difference between playing the defenses in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cincinatti twice each every season, and playing the defenses of St Louis, San Fransisco, and Seattle twice each year.

He goes from playing the 3, 4, and 5th rated defenses to playing the 15, 24, and 29 rated defenses.

Those are 6 games that definitely help a marginal QB look better or worse than he might otherwise be.

Add in that they also play KC, Tampa Bay, and Denver ..... and he could wind up looking even a bit better on top of that.

Despite finishing strong, Anderson was released by the Browns on March 9, 2010. Upon leaving Cleveland, Anderson told The News-Herald, "The fans are ruthless and don't deserve a winner. I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured. I know at times I wasn't great. I hope and pray I'm playing when my team comes to town and (we) roll them." He later apologized for his remarks.

DA's Wikipedia Page

Wow... I wasn't aware that he made those comments till now... What an [Expletive Deleted]...

I also found this part funny...

Quote:

At the start of his sophomore year (2002), Anderson was thrust into the starting role as QB and handed the reins of a rapidly improving program. His early performances showed inexperience and poor passing. This led to an early streak of losses for the team. Despite the losses, Oregon State had no serious competition for quarterback in 2002 and his job was secure.

Coincadence?

Well, this may not be a popular thought, but I actually wish DA Well.. he was a Brown for a few years and I'm sure he gave it everything he had... He wasn't always blessed with teammates that were very good. Now he has a Playoff caliber team so we'll see what happens..

good luck DA

*Ahem* ..... he had 23 yards passing against Buffalo last year. 76 yards vs Chicago. He finished the year with 86 yards vs. Jacksonville.

He actually did marginal against the defenses in our division.

IF he looks better, it is going to be because his receivers are bailing him out.

I actually don't care what a player does once he leaves the Browns. I may have an opinion as far as what I suspect he'll do .... but unless there are draft picks involved, I really don't care one way or the other how they do.

Ahh, I guess I'm a loyal kinda guy..Once a Browns Player, always a Browns Player.. in very few instances would I wish bad on an ex player.

Braylon Edwards is a guy I could care less about.. he was a damn fool when he was here and he's not improved even a little., DA would and has taken responsibility for his mistakes.. Edwards never did.. always blamed something or someone else..

Man I wish we had this guy.

As a side note ..... if I were a coach, I would want my receivers to practice catching with 1 hand.

I would think that it would force them to look the ball in and really concentrate on making the catch with their hand(s).

agreed. I watched a series or two of DAs last week and he looked like DA - some great throws and some bonehead ones. But Leinart went 0-fer in his 3 series, so...

the talking heads on Sirius say this is the game to watch, week 1 and 2 of preseason, this is the one that is gameplanned the most like an in-season game. we'll see what happens this week.

That's a lot of qualifiers. A lot of players can be successful when they have the perfect environment around them.

Other young QB's that have had an 80 QB rating: Aaron Brooks (2002, 2003), Charlie Batch (1998, 1999), David Carr (2004, 2006).

Just because a guy is young and has a QB rating over 80 doesn't mean he is good. In 2007, Anderson's 82.5 QB rating ranked 17th in the NFL, hardly top notch. Also, in 2007 Anderson's completion percentage (with perfect conditions) was 56.5%, 28th out of 32 qualified QB's.

Promising QB, meaning he had one good season. A lot of QB's have had one good season. There could be a lot of reasons behind that; luck, skill, league hasn't caught up to them yet., etc.

And yes, he still managed to throw more TD's (9) than INT's (8). Great job. Yet no mention of his 66.5 QB rating.

Quote:

enter Mangini and his moronic moves and BOTH QBs looked even a lot worse than in years past...I mean let's be honest: we did not have an NFL passing Offense last season, it was a joke

Is it possible Mangini knew he didn't have a starting QB in either Anderson or Quinn? You would say no, because you have "I Hate Mangini" blinders on. But it's a possibility he got to camp and realized he had no QB's.

Quote:

Luke McCown? Definitely not Anderson, as people are saying Max Hall (who was undrafted), has a shot at that job. That shows the lack of confidence the Cardinals have in both Anderson and Leinart.

DA can be a world-beater one series, then a piece of crap the next. He had one above-average season, the others were garbage. Just like Braylon now that I think about it.
I won't miss the sick feeling in my stomach I'd get whenever DA cocked his throwing arm.

Well Arizona....welcome to the 150 mph screen pass at the shoe laces.

Fizgerald just went " Oh, crap."

Ol' Clown Shoes hits pay dirt again. He has the Siren's call of the rocket arm. I guess it's just too much for coaches to pass on.

I wish DA the best.

That said, I watched last weeks game - don't even remember who they played - and I told my wife "I'm glad we don't have that to look forward to this year". Inaccurate throws way, way too often.

But, I wish him the best.

I think Anderson's going to have a decent season. He's not going to be forced into a dink and dunk offense due to a lack of weapons and time to throw. DA has trouble with quick reads and short passes. If he has time to sling it, he'll put up some big numbers with receivers who can catch anything thrown in their general direction. He is what he is, which was a crappy fit for our team.
