Browns say Bentley will miss 2007 season

3:33 p.m.

Brown center LeCharles Bentley, whose lifelong dream was to play for the Browns, will most likely miss the 2007 season and Browns general manager Phil Savage indicated there’s a chance Bentley’s career might be over.

Savage said during a press conference on Tuesday that Bentley will probably need another surgery on his torn left patella tendon and that if he does, he will miss the 2007 season. He said Bentley is rehabbing in Arizona and will know by May or June if he needs the surgery.

He said the Browns will carry Bentley on the roster through the 2007 season, regardless.

“I think we certainly owe LeCharles the opportunty to see where he’s going to be,” said Savage. “This time next year I think we’ll have a much clearer picture in terms of is he really a legitimate piece of the puzzle here or has the injury been so devastating that he may never play again.

“I think that’s something we’ll know clearly this time a year from now.”

Bentley, signed to a 6-year, $36 million free agent contract, suffered the torn patella tendon on the first contact drill of the 2006 training camp and underwent surgery soon after.

Savage said the Browns are proceeding as though Bentley will not play in 2007, saying it will be a “bonus” if he does.

Bentley, from St. Ignatius and Ohio State, said recently that he definitely will play again. Following his initial surgery, he suffered a life-threatening staph infection in the knee that had to be surgically removed. The staph infection may have caused the current damage that will probably need to be repaired.

In other Browns news, Savage said:

* The Browns extended running back Jason Wright’s contract for one year through 2008.

* Cornerback Gary Baxter, who suffered two torn patella tendons, has exceeded doctor’s expectations for where he’d be at this point.

* While the Browns staff is at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week, a company that specializes in infection prevention will coat the Browns facility with a glaze to help cut down on staph infections.

* Right tackle Ryan Tucker has been at the Browns facility meeting with the new coaches and plans to participate in the off-season program. He hopes to play for the Browns in 2007 after leaving the team because of a mental disorder in 2006.

* The Browns have $30 million in cap room and will be aggressive in free agency.

* The team has stepped up negotiations with center Hank Fraley now that it's apparent Bentley won't be around for 2007.

* There's no sense of urgency to re-sign free agent safety Brian Russell.

* Look for the Browns to go after Buffalo cornerback Nate Clement in free agency.

* The Browns won't tip their hand on who they'll pick with the No. 3 or No. 4 pick in the draft.

* They haven't committed to Charlie Frye as their starting quarterback, saying only that he's the incumbent.

This must be a very recent development if true. We really need to get Hank signed before March 2nd.

Notice she's disappeared?

Probably a gag order from Hank himself.

As far as Bentley goes...only the Browns...

Is it ironic that Baxter's ahead of schedule with 2 torn patellars and Bentley's behind with one?

This is not only a severe blow to the Browns, but also to LeCharles.
Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family on a speedy return to health and hope that he will be able to play in '08.

She still logs on. I've talked to her in pm's. She is pretty busy with Travis right now. I don't know if she is waiting to post for Hank to be resigned or not. I surely don't blame her.

I wasn't going to get my hopes up for Bentley to play next year, but I did and now I'm sad again. Good Luck Bentley, and here's to a return in '08!

What? That doesn't jive with this..
http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=6469
Savage said he would like to re-sign potential free agent center Hank Fraley before the free agency period begins. Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley is in Arizona partaking in rehab. Savage said Bentley might have additional surgery that would keep him out of the upcoming season.

Missing '07 wasn't particularly surprising. I was hoping we wouldn't begin hearing more about his injury possibly ending his career, but I can't say that I'm all that surprised about that either.

Here's hoping things go better than expected from here on and that we get a chance to see LCB suit up for the Browns sometime in the future.

I think that's why the article is written like this

Very true, but I have to imagine that she gets some breaks throughout the day to chill, mostly nap times.

I definitely think she's been given a gag order, but I don't know, I don't PM back and forth with her.

It's a shame cuz I got pretty good at decoding Daniellespeak. But at the same time I think it's smart on their part not to make negotiations public.

No the article shouldn't be written that way ..it should state what Phil said not what the writer thinks that means unless he's giving a opinion..now it depends on the actual wording out of Opie's mouth....until the Browns say it , it's not fact yet...the article is stating it as fact.

He needs to wait till May/June before he says so.
We have already figured that might be the case , but I 'd rather Phil be prepared and writers not saying it till he does.

well, if true, then we need to sign Hank A.S.A.P. Also, we may want to go after both Steinbach and Dielman so we can have solid Guards. This would ease some of the Bentley loss. If we went after both Guards then I'm sure we would not be able to sign Clements. I'd be ok with that as long as we signed both Guards. Then we could draft Joe Thomas, (if avaialable) and we would be sitting pretty good on the OL. We could move Shaffer to RT and have Fraley at C and be solid. Then we might get an idea about Frye, our RB's and even the WR's.

Won't be surprised at all if LCB misses all of 2007. If/when he does come back I am doubtful he will ever be the player he once was unfortunately. I sure hope we make a push for steinbach unless he is looking at left tackle money. Dielman would be great too.

I don't have children, but every mother that I know says, when the baby sleeps, you sleep! Especially if the little tyke isn't yet sleeping through the night (as this one isn't yet). Plus, This is her 2nd child, so even if the newborn is asleep, that does not mean the other child is asleep as well. And she also has a young step son as well that is with them often.

Anyhow, quite upsetting about LCB. I juust hope that whatever it is, he's able to recover completely. Best wishes LCB!

When this happened many months ago I knew this was the eventualy outcome. That signing was too good to be true. Ugh, to be a Browns fan sometimes.

Good luck LCB!

OK, missing the '07 season with Bentley is a HUGE blow ....But I doubt his career...

We have a good center Fraley and I like what he did in 2006 and hope we bring him back. He's a good Center.

Danielle - If your out there reading these posts let Hank know as fans we all really want him back. Even if LCB returns back to 100% by the start of the season.

Even if this thread was titled "Bentley to play in '07" I would want Fraley back as an insurance policy. He was really the only bright spot on the line.

That's because he's the worse of the two players.

I've got a theory on Browns players:

If they draft a first round bust, he'll play every down and continually prove he's a bust. He'll never get hurt.

If they draft a legitimate talent, he'll be injured or unmotivated or both.

Look for Wimbley to get hurt in TC this year.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

The FO has to look at the situation like Fraley is not the only fish in the sea. There are other prospects in free agency, the draft and on the roster that can play center. If he is signed for 2007, Philly gets a 6th round pick instead of a 7th round pick in 2008. Those factors have to be considered. In spite of this, it makes sense to have #66 come back. Proceeding as if LCB may never return would be prudent.

Not too surprising, but sad nonetheless. I remember being so happy to get such a high quality player who DREAMED of playing for the Browns. Here's hoping he gets to.

Pretty much what I expected. Had the news been good the Browns would have released it sooner then this since we are a team needing some good news.

I only hope Bentley is able to resume a normal life. Anything past that is a Grace from God.

You have said many smart things on here, but that might be the smartest.....no rip intended. Let the agent do the talking...that is part of why you pay him or her.

Hope you and the baby are doing well.
