Multiple sources told ESPN.com that the two divisions in the Big Ten will look like: • Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Minnesota. • Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Illinois. The Big Ten issued a press release saying it would announce its divisional alignment at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday. According to sources, the divisions were decided upon Monday. According to multiple sources, the Big Ten wanted to preserve a number of traditional rivalries such as Michigan-Michigan State, Iowa-Minnesota, Purdue-Indiana and Indiana-Illinois. The Big Ten is also expected to announce a consistent crossover game in football similar to Ohio State-Michigan that will be played each year. Expect to see longtime rivals Wisconsin and Minnesota playing every season. In men's basketball, according to sources, the Big Ten could play a 16-game conference schedule by taking a model similar to those used by the Big 12 and Southeastern conferences. In those leagues, teams play each division opponent twice and then single games -- three at home and three on the road -- against teams in the opposing division. However, the Big Ten has not had complaints with its current 18-game conference schedule and could stick with that format and have one 12-team division in basketball. The Big 12 will finish such a format this season after it loses Nebraska -- the Cornhuskers are joining the Big Ten as its 12th member -- and possibly Colorado, if the Buffaloes can leave the Big 12 for the Pac-10 while paying its exit fee. If the Big 12 goes to a 10-team conference then it will play a true round-robin schedule of 18 games in 2011-12. The new Pac-12, with the additions of Colorado and Utah, also will likely use this new format of 16 games after playing a true-round robin of 18 games as a 10-team league. The Big Ten played an 18-game conference season and will finish with that unbalanced schedule this season. Andy Katz is a senior writer for ESPN.com.

Don't like. I know what they are trying to do but I don't like it. I'd rather have Michigan and Ohio State in the same division. Oh well I knew this was coming. They really want the possibility of OSU and Mich to play twice. BTW, what do you call it, east/west, north/south?? Geographically it doesn't work so how about Division Big and Division Ten???

We KNEW they would want OSU and Michigan playing two games per year, if they got their way. They are the flagship rivalry for the Big Ten. Having them in the biggest Big Ten game of the year, the title game, would maximize the exposure of their conference (though the first OSU/UM game will drop in importance as a result). Well, UM might not be near a title game for a while with RRod as their coach.
Plus, you can't have OSU/UM play each other in the last game of the year too. So get ready for them playing in October.
And it's too bad there are two 6-team divisions.....should have been two 7-team divisions. Syracuse or Rutgers and ND. It'll eventually happen (hopefully). Too bad they couldn't get it done for next year.

Wisconsin throws off the geography.. I mapped it out quick and there is a pretty nice north/south divider line if not for Wisconsin. If you could get rid of Wisconsin and pick up Kansas it would work better.. do that.

The game will be moved.....just accept that.
I know it is tough for some to take just as your neighbors to the south were concerned back when the SEC added Arkansas and South Carolina to forge their split.
it's the only way it can be done....and you have a traditional rival game, all the jug and ax games will still be played.
Looking back at the SEC split, about the only game the Gators miss that had some meaning was playing Auburn every year...but to move forward you sometimes have to give something up.

It might, but my thinking is it is better to finish up in division. It's just a date, but then again Tennesse/Alabama have been playing the 3rd weekend in Oct for 100 years. You might be right. I just think when you look at the history of the league, those two teams have to be considered the two favorites, though Neb will have something to say about that. It isn't good to have 2 teams playing back to back ....final game and championship game. I'll bet you a box of donuts the game date is moved up. Noticed I kept it donuts and not the keys to the car.

Ok...that makes sense...seems I remember having those many years ago.
Being 80 lbs lighter than 3-4 years ago, and 30 since mid March ,I don't think in terms of candy anymore.

j/c.,,,...we didn't destroy the last - week - rivalry when we added Penn State, why destroy it now. This is BULL. Peen - I love ya to death, ...but Florida - Auburn was a rivarly (?), compared to losing Ohio State - Michigan,...

I wasn't saying it was a big rivalry. I was saying that in a split, you lose some tradition. It wasn't anywhere near the big game of the year, but it was a big game and one that was lost with the split.
Probably like OSU/Iowa to give an example, who will now play twice every 4 years.
Why would you use OSU/Michigan as an example?? They aren't stopping that game. The only question I know of was it going to change dates.
I don't mind owing a box of donuts, but don't sit there trying to say I was comparing a Fla/Auburn game to OSU/Mich....some games you don't bust up, but the date is a small part.
Really, would playing the Mich/OSU game in Oct make the game less meaningful?? If so, it isn't much of a game.

The date,...as in the last game of the season, after 100 (+) years is to be just twiddled away ?
C'mon man, the ONLY reason this is even a consideration is so that they don't have to play back to back until Michigan finally gets its act together,....and if they ever do, then the money rolls in anyway,...

That's actually not a half bad idea....
I'm not a huge fan of the split, but understand why they did it. I was hoping Nebraska would be paired with OSU.... I'm glad at least PSU was in their division.

Pretty decent balance of power IMO
Iowa Michigan and Nebraska
v
Wisky, OSU, and PSU
Will most definately give any team who wins the conference a strong argument for the national championship each year and the runner up a BCS game.

Well there goes Undefeated OSU vs Undefeated Mich for the Big Ten Title idea I had in my head...
Ignoring Mich's current state of play of course...
My only question is, what happens when OSU and Mich (or any other example) are already set to face in the title game going into the last week of the season...
I understand College isn't liek the NFL and when you have your division wrapped up, you still have to keep playing and winning to get to the title game...
But it poses a question...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?
