I was quoting Purdue's coach after they beat OSU last year. He said "Get used to it." They play the quote on the radio about 700 times every day here in C-Bus. Still debating whether or not Tress would actually run up the score on them this year. . . .

I'm with Ballpeen on this, the game will have to be moved. It has been a nice tradition since 1935 but traditions some times need to change for the better. The Rose Bowl use to be the PAC10 champion vs the Big Ten champion and since the BCS started that hasn't always happend.

But eventually you will have a senario like this. Three teams in major confrences undefeated. Let's say for the argument Bama, tOSU, Miami. tOSU goes into the last week of the season against a one loss (out of confrence) Michigan. Let's say the North/West Division is a little down and Michigan's one loss is to a mid ranked team so they are ranked 13th. Ohio State Wins and Michigan is knocked back to around 15-16ish.

Now Michigan still won it's division so they play again a week later for the Confrence title. tOSU wins again now Michigan will probably drop another slot or two.

Now tOSU is undefeated but so are Bama and Miami and with Michigan dropping in rank it knocks tOSU to third in the computer rankings and miss out on the Title game. Let something along those lines happen and you will see that game moved.

Now if we had a true playoff that wouldn't matter but untill we do playing Michigan back to back could hurt the winner of that game's chances on a National Title.

Well, the big picture is what happens to other teams playing that are undefeated....

There are plenty of what ifs out there...i don't care about any of that..

Do you have any idea what MICHIGAN week is at OSU? are you from central ohio? Have you ever jumped in the mirror lake in NOV in freezing cold?
the madness that is MICHIGAN week in NOV last game of the season, it will NEVER be the same if the game is moved...

That is what matters to me as a fan. how many years will OSU and Michigan both win their divisons and play twice a year? come on...as soon as MICHIGAN becomes good OSU is prolly going to hit it's down side.

Well there goes Undefeated OSU vs Undefeated Mich for the Big Ten Title idea I had in my head...

Ignoring Mich's current state of play of course...

My only question is, what happens when OSU and Mich (or any other example) are already set to face in the title game going into the last week of the season...

I understand College isn't liek the NFL and when you have your division wrapped up, you still have to keep playing and winning to get to the title game...

But it poses a question...

College rivalries are one of a kind. They draw the largest crowds of nearly every sporting event. They gain national exposure that the kids don't see on a week to week basis. With the amount of tradition the game has. And the amount of hype leading up to the game.

I don't see anyone laying down.

I don't understand why a team from one "side" would always finish its season against a team from the other "side" of the conference.

I would think that a team's conference schedule would be first against the teams in its own "division" (or whatever we call half of a conference) and then fill out the rest on a rotating basis against the teams in the other division.

If Ohio State/Michigan is always the final game of the season, yet the 2 teams are in opposite divisions, doesn't that somehow cheapen the divisional play? Plus, why should the 2 teams either benefit from, or suffer from a fixed schedule that requires them to play a fixed, non divisional opponent?

I would assume that the Big 10 will set up some sort of rotating schedule for its games against the opposite division. It just seems strange to me that 2 teams would cross up that scheduling with a fixed date.

No it doesn't...you answered your own question...this isn't the NFL...you can't possibly lay down your last week because u are playing in the CONF title game...if you lose that game you are most likely NOT going to play in the national champ game no matter what happens in the CONF title game.

This is why i was concerned when i found out they are not in the same division. cuz to me it wouldn't make sense if they are in diff divisions yet play every year...esp on the last game of the season. But that is exactly what they did....i think what happened was they at first were not going to have them play every year or even the last game of the season..but got the pressure from OSU AD and Pres and caved in..and it was too big of a move to switch one of the teams to the others division so they just went ahead and said oh they can play every year as their last game.

Well the Big Ten does and trust me they will care more about missing a championship appearance than hurting the die hard fans feelings, because you know what, you will still watch.

Yes, had a few freinds go to tOSU and have gone the game and participated in the festivities a few times.

are you from central ohio?

No, I'm from Northeast Ohio but as a life long tOSU fan learned from my father who is a life long tOSU fan I still understand the rivalry and tradition. That is why I wanted them to be in the same division.

No, does it make me less of a fan if I don't want to risk phnemonia?

Again, which is why I wanted them both in the same division, instead of the last game deciding the Big Ten champ like it has so many times since 1935 it would decide who gets to play in the Big Ten title game. The Big Ten wants them to play twice a year and if a playoff system doesn't get incorportated there is a risk of them playing twice in a row hurting the winners chance at a title shot.

And it doesn't have to be all undefeated, a one loss season but because SoS drops due to beating the same team in back to back weeks could still hurt the Big Ten's chance at a NT appearance. That is all the Big Ten will care about.

Flip Wisconsin and Michigan.

Wisconsin fits in the other division geographically.

And then they don't have to make up some stupid "One fixed game" thing just to keep OSU/Mich every year...

Sure you lose the possibility of an OSU/Mich title game... But hey, we've come this far without it...

And we'll see where you are at when this set up costs tOSU a shot at a title. Again, I didn't want the game moved I wanted them in the same division. But since they are in different divisions they will eventually move the game. Don't blame me blame the Big Ten.

dude you tell me right now how many times do you think that will happen? If michigan goes undefeated or 1 loss coming into the OSU game in the next 3years i'll be freaking shocked. Even when it does happen if OSU and MICHIGAN are undefeated or 1 loss they will be in the top 10 if not the top 5. There are so many variables...what you are talking about might happen 1s every 10 years or never

I agree with you that they should have been in the same division...but they aren't...all i cared about is that they play every year as the last game..and like you said that only made sense if they stayed in the same division...but it is what it is...

2003, three teams with one loss, LSU, Oklahoma and USC. LSU vs Oklahoma for the NT. LSU won and was given the BCS championship, USC won their bowl game and was awarded the AP Championship. Also we just has a few years ago a bunch of two loss teams fighting for a spot in the 2008 National Title. It's not that far fetched.

So you can scoff at the senarios but trust me all it will take is once and the Big Ten will make sure it doesn't happen again. Or they are already thinking about it and they will make sure it doesn't happen period.

So we only play 2 teams frm our opposite division each year. 5(other than um) teams 2 per year, so we only play them every 2.5 years?

Iowa, msu. Nb, nw, mn? I was always against this.

that's funny, didn't hear that quote out here in TX.

anyway, I don't think it's in Tress's nature(unless we can jump out 28-0 or something in the first half), but Pryor might try to sneak in an extra TD or two.

Yeah, there will be PLENTY more people amped up for Purdue @ OSU this season than usual.

Here's my crazy idea for the split. Don't have set sides. Change them every season divided up by preseason rank. Group 1 would get the #1 ranked Big Ten team and Group 2 would get the 2nd ranked one. Then go back and forth w/ 3rd, 4th, etc... So this year (pretend Nebraska is already in the Big 10) it would be . . .

Group 1 - OSU, Iowa, Penn State, Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois

Group 2 - Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana

OSU and Michigan might be in the same group. Might not. THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!!

not so fast my friend (hahahaha, it is that time of the year)

tress made sure he punished illinois last year for the way they acted when they beat us in 2007.

and i think he did the same to northwestern a few years ago, pat fitzgerald was not happy. i wonder if that was for them acting like they won the super bowl after they beat them in overtime back in 2004.

and yeah, i'm pretty sure i'll be laying a huge number on osu to cover vs purdue. payback is coming.

This split is no good for Buckeyes fans. Who wants to pay to watch OSU stomp Illinois and Indiana every single year? Here is each team's overall winning percentage from 2000 through 2009:

TEAM DIVISION
1. Ohio St. (.800) E
2. Michigan (.663) W
3. Iowa (.613) W
4. Nebraska (.579) W
5. Penn St. (.563) E
6. Wisconsin (.550) E
7. Purdue (.513) E
8. Northwestern (.475) W
9. Michigan St. (.400) W
10. Minnesota (.375) W
11. Illinois (.325) E
12. Indiana (.225) E

Here is how the averages look for each division:
East 0.496
West 0.5175

If the primary goal was to keep the division equal from a competetive standpoint, then that goal was not met. Even with OSU's uncharacteristic high win pct over the last 10 years and Nebraska and Michigan's uncharacteristic weakness, the Western Division still comes out stronger. When Michigan and Nebraska return to powerhouse status, it will show how lopsided this split is.

And yet OSU still plays Penn St. & Wisconsin every year too. So that's two good schools to balance off the two bad. And come on, that's what college football is. Most of the BCS contending schools play 2-3 cupcakes, 5-6 average teams (which they blowout anyway), and only a few tough teams per year. Beating down Illinois and Indiana every year fits that model.

I doubt it was ever considered for the two to play on a rotating basis.

As I explained if using the SEc model, each team in one division keeps one "traditional" rival from the other, then rotates the rest.

Florida is in the east of the SEC yet we play LSU, who is in the west, every year.

Tennessee and Alabama, in different divisions have maintained their yearly game.

Just on paper, the Big 10 east looks to be the patsy side of the draw. The Buckeyes did well.

The point is that only looks good when looking at the last 10 years and not over a longer history.
The teams in the West Division are historically better than they have been the last 10 years and eventually they are going to be good again.

These teams are outside of their historical norms:
Michigan State all-time: .587
Michigan all-time: .737
Nebraska all-time: .701
OSU all-time:.717

So as you can see, if all of these teams returned to historical norms (which will eventually happen), then the East Division would clearly be much weaker

Clearly shows an OSU bias as this paves the way for them to play in the Big 10 championship game even in down years as their is a lack of competition on their side of the aisle...

What guarantees in a "down year" that they win their division ?

Unless you mean a down year like, only losing twice, to the "correct" teams...

Sure there was pressure from Ohio State to retain the history of the final week's game, but I believe the real reason - short term here - is because Michigan is not now an obvious threat to win their division, and the back-to-back is unlikely until they return to form. When they do, it'll get moved -- oh well. If they never do return, and become an Indiana or Minnesota, teams the Big Ten has been carrying for eons, then the game won't have to be "moved" at all. In the meantime, this gives the Big Ten time for its fans to absorb the potential likelihood.

They've pretty much layed a flexible foundation.

You mean like Notre Dame, Florida State and Auburn? There's no guarantee that any once great school will return to winning ways.
