I really like the program Boise State has built. However, they've badly out-grown their conference. I would love to see how they would fare in one of the BCS conferences (I think they would still do well). However, so long as they are stuck in the WAC, their schedule will (and should) continue to hurt them.
They can whine all they want about that being unfair, but champs coming out of BCS conferences undefeated or with just one loss have all played tougher schedules and deserve the first crack at a national championship. It is what it is.

i think undefeated major conference team vs undefeated boise state is a no brainer. but a 1-loss ohio st or 1 loss alabama, is debatable.
depends on the loss.
if bama loses on the road, on a last minute play, or in OT, or somethign like that i think it would sway voters in their favor.
if ohio state has a purdue type game again, i think voters sway in favor of boise.
i don't think you can just throw a blanket over it and say a 1-loss major conference deserves or doesn't deserve to be in over an undefeated boise st. ya gotta go case by case.

While I agree with you on Boise's schedule being weak. Let's not overlook the fact that they still have Oregon State on the schedule. That's two teams that will finish in the Top 25 that they'll play this year.
I know, that's not a tough schedule, but they're trying.

I'm not coming to Boise's defense here, but some of what the BCS will puke out will be based on how Boise's opponents do also.
Lot's of football left to play.

Good point, you said "They're trying,..." There are many teams who won't/would not schedule these guys,....
Also, some schedule "fuel for the fire," their final game is against Utah State, who just took Oklahoma to the wire. They also have (mid-season) Toledo, a team that has a reputation for coming out of nowhere.

Toledo who had really become a great MAC program since the early 90's has completely exploded. A point-shaving scandal will keep that team at the bottom of the MAC standings for a long time. But like you said, they have two nice wins in the past two years (beating Mich in Mich & beating up Colorado at home). Of course, both of those teams weren't very good at the time, but Toledo was way worse.
I'd be the happiest guy in the world if Toledo shocked Boise, but it ain't happening this year. They have NOBODY on their roster now. The scandal has really affected recruiting this year.
As far as Boise State, I want them to win out and get into the title game. Good story and great for all the underdogs in smaller conferences....but it won't lead to any changes in the BCS system longterm. Boise will lose some players to the NFL and will fall back down. The major conferences have gigantic history on their side to eventually win most recruiting battles.
College football is like MLB to me, it's broken. I can list all my reasons for both, but everyone already knows the issues. If their leaders can get their heads out of their butts, those two could make a good fight against NFL for top sports entity in the US (fight, not beat).
Good game last night, though I would have liked to see VT tie the game and go to OT.

There is no "first crack" .. primarily because there is no "second crack"... There is one game and the teams that play in that game are picked based on some combination of computer generated analysis and biased personal opinion of "experts"... and this season will be like so many before it in that we will get to week 6 or 7 of the college football season with BCS officials PRAYING that something happens to break the log jam because there will be 4 or 5 undefeated teams at that time and 1 or 2 of them will be TCU and Boise State that nobody knows what to do with, then there will be a host of 1-loss teams waiting in the wings... Basically we will be, yet again, facing a situation the BCS is unprepared to deal with and they will be hoping it all sorts itself out on the field so that they can be justified in putting the two biggest TV draw teams in the national championship, which is really what they want to do anyway.

I'm be interested in finding out the TV ratings for last night's game. If tons of people tuned in, wouldn't that negate the "Boise is too small to draw big ratings in the BCS title game" argument? I would think having Boise in the final game would draw more people to the game than having Alabama playing OSU. Right?
Unless it's not about ratings.....
I get that the power conferences line the NCAA's pockets the most and they'd both be irked if upstart Boises gets in to take a big piece of the money prize (and maybe the title). But as ratings go, I think Boise would be good.
Anybody have more detail on why people dislike Boise so much? Are they afraid Boise will steal a BCS title bid away from a more deserving big conference team (Buckeyes)?

Not sure if Maryland set a record yesterday or not but I would think that giving up 485 yards and only 14 points might be some kind of record..

BSU will be moving to the Mountain West next year. They have games scheduled against Utah (as Utah moves to the Pac-12) and BYU (independence lol) in their OOC schedule..They will also play TCU. And will have Air Force to deal with. If they schedule another decent OOC team they should be good to go next year.

From what I've seen so far it's that. And it's coupled with that they've kinda become ESPN's media darlings. Everyone hopped on the Boise State bandwagon and now since there's so many people on it, there's backlash. It happens all the time. Something becomes popular and then it becomes popular to hate it.
I've been rooting for them since before Oklahoma because of it's close ties with the Mountain West via WAC. And their expressed interest to join said conference for ages.

college football brings out the hate in everyone.
most people who are die-hards of schools with title hopes hate boise because they could potentially ruin their chances.
boise is a good team. they proved that last night. maybe they aren't as good as alabama and ohio state, and some others, but i think they proved that they can hang. they do belong.
but the fact that they play in a conference without any real competition hurts them. they beat va tech, could beat oregon state and then play their backups the rest of the year and still end up unbeaten.
maybe they should take a page out of english soccer. move boise into a major conference, and take a bottom feeder and put them into the wac.

Gotta hand it to Boise and Peterson. Say what you will about their conference/schedule, but they are DOMINATING national headlines. Out of Boise. Impressive stuff.
I don't know if they deserve the national champ chance or not at this point, let's let it play out and see what they will be up against (or how good VaTech and/or Oregon State really are this year).
As for stumbling blocks the rest of the way, here are the 4 likeliest candidates:
1. Fresno State - beatup on Cincy though UC is regrouping this season. Pat Hill isn't happy that Boise is leaving the WAC and that game is undoubtedly circled on the calendar. They are a tough, well-coached team and I expect a tight game.
2. Oregon State - sloppy, athletic team with the ability to beat Boise, but I think VaTech is better than them. With the Rodgers brothers, you never know though. They certainly could show up that day.
3. LaTech - always seem to play Boise tough despite not being a great team. Maybe it's schemes, but they could pull the upset card.
4. Nevada - Probably the 3rd best WAC team (after Boise and Fresno), but Boise usually handles them easily. They should have the offense, let's see if their defense can figure out how to slow down the Broncos.

Maybe, but you run the risk that it's going to be 45-0 at halftime.... I think that is a fear (even though everything we know about BSU says that won't happen).. I can't help but think it plays into it.... I know they are thinking.. what if the Buckeyes play BSU in the NC game and beat them 56-0.. while we kept a one loss Alabama team out of the NC game.. that won't look good.

I didn't know people did. I don't. I like watching them, they are exciting and fun to watch and they are the proverbial thorn in the paw of the BCS every year.. what's not to like about that?
Quote:

LOL.. as a fan of a team without a dog in the fight... this is a good reason why people dislike teams like Ohio State more than it is a reason why they dislike Boise State.. because big time programs like the Buckeyes feel they are automatically more deserving..

I don't hate Boise. I just hate hearing about them. Every year for the past few years they've dominated their weak schedule and not gotten tapped for the championship game, and a lot of people seem to see that as some sort of injustice. I'm sure many if these people are the same folks who say Ohio State shouldn't go to championship games because the Big Ten just isn't what it used to be. While that may be true, it's still tougher than the WAC.
Boise State won't go to the title game for the same reason an underrated MAC team wouldn't. The same reason Cincinnati didn't despite beating three top 25 teams (plus Florida in a bowl game) en route to a perfect season. Does anybody feel that Cincinnati should've played Alabama last year for the title?
The argument that Boise can't play better teams because other teams are scared has no validity. Their potential opponents aren't scared, they just play several tough in-conference games every year.

They can't be too upset now. Fresno is leaving too. And if they can get the cash to do it, they'll move when Boise does. Same goes for UNR.
So the Mountain West in upcoming years will be:
Fresno State TCU Boise State UNR UNLV CSU Wyoming Air Force NMU SDSU

Maybe you worded it wrong but I'm sure Florida stomped a mud hole in Cincinnati last year in the bowl game.

Boise St should have pushed hard to get into Nebraska's spot of the Big 12 instead of joining the Mountain West. At least the MWC will be a step up with BYU & TCU, too bad Utah is leaving to go to the PAC.

I think Cincy would've done better if their Coach had any class.

BYU is going independent. However Boise State already have scheduled games with both Utah Squads.

Doh! Thanks. Forgot that they were now leaving too. And this was topped off with the next poster forgetting that BYU is going independent.

Nobody said it was about scared,...you hit the nail on the head. There's no room for Boise, so they shouldn't be blamed when they can't gin up what everyone wants to become a "better" schedule.
This why we need to do away with conferences. I want to see a schedule based on rotating seeds established on last year's results. Last year's champ plays 2,6,10,14,18,22,26,30,34,38, or some such mathematical arrangment.

Plenty of national pundits have opined that the only reason teams from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, etc, won't schedule Boise is because they're scared to do so.
Misspoke re: Cincy vs Florida. Should've said that they beat three top 25 teams to go unbeaten before losing to Florida in a bowl game.

And they are right (or were up until lately).. there is no up side. So you schedule Boise State, and if you win.. well you were supposed to win because Boise State is perpetually overrated.. if you lose, it looks bad because you lost to Boise State.. it's better to beat Jacksonville State... or Appalachian State than it is to risk losing to Boise State. ... if you are going to take the risk you might as well schedule Alabama, if you lose that's ok because Alabama is great but if you win, it's really great and thrusts you into the national spotlight..

This is from his weekly chat on Washington Post: Quote:
washington, dc: Mike,
If, as possible Boise and TCU are the only undefeated teams at the end of the season and ranked 1 and 2, and the NCAA is forced to put them together again, but this time in the BCS championship, will that be the tipping point for football playoffs?
Michael Wilbon: Oh yes...And don't think I'm not, as a playoff proponent, rooting for that. I'd love to see TCU and Boise run the table, Alabama and Florida and even Ohio State (I am a Big Ten guy, remember) all lose...In other words, I'd love to see TCU and Boise as the only undefeateds with a string of blowout victories to their credit. You watch the big conference commissioners scream bloody murder and all those lame university presidents at the BCS schools start screaming for a playoff.

This is exactly right. You also have to figure that there is no financial motivation to play BSU versus another big-confrence heavy-weight. If you're going to run the risk of losing to a top-ranked team ... might as well schedule someone like Alabama and get a bigger payday. There's no real benefit to taking on a team like BSU ... and BSU gets the short end of the stick.
What can they do realistically? They beat everyone they play, but nobody worth a salt will play them. About the only thing they can do is go undefeated for 3 years straight and hop that's enough to get them into a championship.

Virginia Tech is pretty good.

The problem is that they only have 3 slots for games per year.. their conference schedule, until they switch conferences, is going to be lame.. there is nothing they can do about that other than switch..
For most teams, scheduling one OOC game against a team like Va Tech is enough because they have at least 2 or 3 conference games that will be good.. Boise State doesn't have any in-conference competition and that is what is really killing them.
Ohio State can schedule Miami, which is about the equivalent of Va Tech but then OSU also has Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Penn State and Michigan... So as much as I like Boise State, there is nothing they can do to make a schedule which requires them to play Louisiana Tech, Nevada, Utah State, and Hawaii look like that....

I think BSU would love to be in a larger conference, play larger teams and do everything the "big boys" can ... it's just nobody will let them. It's not like they WANT to play a creampuff schedule and be on the outside looking in when it comes to Champ time.

I do not have any inside information into what Boise State has done or not done to get into a better conference. I do know that they have been good for... 6 years now? .. and changing conferences is something you don't do overnight. One would think you would want to have at least a few good years before considering the switch.. you don't switch after one good year.. then it takes a couple years to work it out and then a couple more before you can actually start playing in that conference... so I would think they made the switch about as fast as they could.
My only concern is this.. was it the right move? Does the Mountain West give them the recognition they need or should they have held out for the Pac 10 or Big 10 or a better deal? Or are they going to feel like they a have to switch again in a couple years?

Just kidding here, but yeah, The Big Ten is dying to replace built-in cream puff Indiana with Boise State,...

yeah, but i think it's different with them and the the post season.
they beat oklahoma, but oklahoma didn't really respect them that night. they beat tcu and that was a great win but i think there is a big difference between beating someone in a bowl game that isn't the bcs chip and that win last night which was a virtual playoff game.
that win last night is unbelievable for them. right or wrong they would have been cast into the group of teams that shouldn't compete, had they lost.
i think it was probably the biggest win in the team's history, bigger than oklahoma. even bigger than beating oregon the way they did last year. they went on the road, in a nationally televised game that every college football fan watched, and beat a legitimate top 15 team, and while that wasn't lane stadium, it might as well have been.
