Link I think this is ridiculous! Why would anyone want to take the time to ban spinning rims? I mean, whats the point? Are they a danger to society? I don't think I've ever gotten hurt because of someone having spinning rims on their cars! What does everyone else think?

When I worked and lived in Akron, I always saw some sweet spinners. Heck Serpentini owned a truck with some phat spinners.

I might take a stab at it and guess why they are being banned.
In order to mount these "spinner" rims, they have to be mounted to a special hub, so the vehicles axles must be fitted with adapters to mount these rims. Part of this adaptation is a reverse screw pattern that the adaptation mounts to on the axle. Not a problem if the car is always driven forward. If the vehicle is moved in reverse (or towed) for any distance, these rims unscrew from their mountings and the tires fall off. When I worked with M&M and towed cars, any cars that had spinners were assigned a flatbed tow, or a dolly tow, assuring that all the tires were off the pavement while it was being moved to whatever location it was being taken to.
I imagine the decision rests with public safety and has nothing to do with appearance.

Wow, I never realized that. I still don't agree with the banning, but I never knew that's how spinners were attached.

Instead of banning tire rims, why don't they clean up the damn city?
That city is thee most disgusting, dirty place that I have ever walked on in my life...Not to mention it's hard to find a single friggin blade of grass unless you go to park....

Or to LA.
I love NYC and would go back to visit it anytime. I've never found it to be dirtier than any other major metropolitan area that I've ever visited.

But here's the spinner I thought of: [image] [/image] Anyway, I think DPG may have nailed a vital reason spinner may be banned. I would guess that there is a greater cost with a flat-bed tow vs. a hook tow.

I thought they were mounted using bearings around the outer edge of the rim, so when the car stops, the spinning part of the wheel will still move...

Well add me to the list of oldtimers who thought this was about the musical group. I also thought of another type of spinner but it's not apprpriate to share here.

Seeing how hard a time my grandparents had using a computer, I'm surprised so many oldtimers manage to be this active on the board

I would pin the issue on the illusion of movement.
When you slow for an intersection and another car is coming from the perpendicular direction, what is the the first thing most people look at to determine if a vehicle is moving. The rims. They are the most obvious item to notice movement, and spinners create the illusion a car is moving when it isn't.
I'm not for banning them, but have had situations where in a split second decision thing the car waiting to turn out of the parking lot or from the cross street is moving right into my current path, and causes a quick reaction from me til my brain processes the information and realizes that the car itself is not moving.
I don't know that this is the issue, but I have read articles where people and authorities have noted this as a distraction.
I have never heard of them falling off. Essentially, you remove the lugs that hold your rims on, replace them with special stud style lugs, and put the rims back on, then put on the spinner that bolts into the stud-lugs. I don't know of any "drilling into the axle" method.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Uhsoshiated pres: (5 seconds ago) Congress just passed legislation banning all forms of media not controlled by the government. All cable boxes will be reprogrammed to only receive the government access channel, all newspapers will be shutdown and a government newspaper will be issued.
All radio stations will be disbanned and replaced by an AM band government news station.
Personal cellphones and home telephones will reprogrammed to only call emergency numbers, and internet will be regulated and filtered to only surf government approved informational sites.

Thanks Bubba! That was like a boost of energy on this dreary morning. Whatever happened to the good black singers?? Seems most have fallen into rap. I just can't get into that at all. Give me the Spinners, Temptations, Sam Cooke, Gladdis Knight, Dionne Warwick, Supremes...I think the black artists of today are missing the boat.

You are the first person to mention drilling into the axle, yet it is in quotations. I'm guessing you thought you were quoting me.
What I said was...
Quote:
In order to mount these "spinner" rims, they have to be mounted to a special hub, so the vehicles axles must be fitted with adapters to mount these rims. Part of this adaptation is a reverse screw pattern that the adaptation mounts to on the axle.
The adaptation bolts to the original hub. The rim is a reverse thread screw on to the adaptation and is then topped off with a lock ring through the rim, and center cover placed on. This gives the illusion that there is no lug nuts present when the rims are spinning, because all of the mounting is contained in the hub adaptation, which is part of the reverse screw pattern.
How do I know this? I had the pleasure of changing one at one time.
