We gotta g.... Ah never mind anyway. http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/r...ong_others.htmlRavens cut Graham, T.Smith among others The Ravens have revealed the players who did not make the team’s 53-man active roster. The biggest development is the decision to waive kicker Shayne Graham, the fourth-most accurate kicker in NFL history. Graham connected on 2-of-3 field goals in preseason games, while incumbent Billy Cundiff was perfect on all three of his attempts. In training camp workouts at Westminster when reporters were permitted to watch, Graham converted 83 of 103 attempts, a success rate of 80.5 percent. Cundiff went 82 of 96, or 85.4 percent. The organization also cut quarterback Troy Smith, who completed 54.0 percent (34 of 63) of his passes for 388 yards this preseason. But he was intercepted twice in the team’s 27-21 loss to the St. Louis Rams in the preseason finale Thursday night, and he was bumped in the depth chart when the Ravens signed Marc Bulger in July. The following players were also released: Cornerbacks Travis Fisher, K.J. Gerard, Prince Miller, Chris Hawkins and Brad Jones, wide receivers Demetrius Williams, Justin Harper and Eron Riley, offensive tackles Joe Reitz and Devin Tyler, guard Bryan Mattison, tight end Davon Drew, running back Curtis Steele and linebacker Albert McClellan. The team moved offensive tackles Stefan Rodgers (right ankle) and rookie Ramon Harewood (knees), defensive tackle Kelly Talavou (left leg) and guard/center David Hale (bruised tailbone) to injured reserve.

I really, really like Troy... but figured he'd never make it in the NFL... hope he does well with whatever the next step is.

Have you seen some of the QBs in this league?
His next step is probably someplace like Buffalo or Carolina or Jacksonville or Tampa or AZ or......you get the picture.
Hell, at this point I'd take him over Colt McCoy if we could find someplace to hide Colt for a year.

I don't understand why he wasn't a going to be a good pro QB..obviously the pro's knew this and is why he dropped to the 5th round...but i would love to know why? he had one bad game after taking over as a starter..
AH..another heisman winning QB released! shocker? not really

well as a starter I never really thought he'd make it... I could see him being a back up and used in the wild cat, but I thought he just wasn't built like a proto type NFL starting QB.
I wouldn't be surprised if he was picked up by someone this season, but we'll see.

well.. too late now.. we drafted Colt McCoy.. However.. if Holmgren was not here, I would say a YOUNGER troy smith could easily replace an OLDER Seneca Wallace, in that they have the same skill sets.

I wouldn't be surprised if (1) he gets picked up rather quickly by some other team; or (2) he gets into coaching somewhere.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

If he does get picked up, I think he'd make a decent flea-flicker, Randle-El type.

Is he fast enough to play WR?
Also, it seems like he's too far into his career to switch positions.

Another really good college player whose game just doesn't translate to the NFL. No surprise here.

I honestly think he has it in him to at least be a back up QB in this league...Baltimore has marc freakin' bulger and a stud young at QB. They didn't want to waste troy's years and he didn't want to be there..so they released him.

Bad day for quite a few ex-Buckeyes yesterday besides Troy. These guys all got cut: LB's Bobby Carpenter, Matt Wilhelm, Austin Spitler; DL Quinn Pitcock, Doug Worthington; and DB Anderson Russell. There may have been others, but those were the names I noticed. I always thought Carpenter was going to be a special player, which probably explains why I'm not a scout.

I think Troy smith could be a quality QB in this league if given the opportunity the last Regular Season game he started was in 2007 against the Pittsburgh Steelers...last regular season game of the year Smith went: 16-27 171 yards 1 TD no interceptions, and rushed 5 times for 23 yards. Qb rating of 90.2 http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/gamelog?playerId=10617&sYear=2007Troy Smith would have been the starter for Baltimore if not for a illness that forced the Ravens to put in flacco Troy Smith "beat out" Flacco in training camp that year....an unfornatute illness kept him from playing. The Browns would be smart to pick this guy up look its little risk and high reward. we can get the guy for next to nothing We keep 4 QB this year...yes 4 QB..while Smith learns the playbook he can help Cribbs and Wallace and give us an insane Wildcat Offense while Colt and Smith compete. Yes Troy is a tad short, but he has a great arm, is mobile and seems to be a pretty smart guy. We could atleast use him this year and gauge him...if he comes along at a pace we like...he could save us a draft pick on a QB next year and we cna focus on LB and DL Smith beating out Flacco and having a good showing against a good Steelers D shows he can play in this league....its sad really...had he not gotten that illness...he may be the Ravens starter right now...he did beat out Flacco in training camp that year...that is enough proff the kid deserves a look...especially here...he wanted to play here anyways, and he is a good kid. We could sign him relativly cheap also think about this' its not out of the realm of possibility that BOTH jake and seneca end up hurt this year..it could happen...i would rather put Troy smith on the field this year and see what he could do before I would put colt out there...Colt isn't ready and who knows..this just may be what Troy needs to really get his career going and it would help us with a young up and coming QB just a thought sign the guy...its low risk high reward...he works out then great..if not...were not really out anything.

I am a OSU homer. Having said that, I still believe TS has a higher ceiling than Colt. Neither are franchise QBs but he would be an improvement to our roster.

Maybe he and Maurice Clarett can get together. All Bucks expansion team might be tasty, unless it was in Michigan. Not sure he can be a starter in the NFL, but have enjoyed watching him. We do NOT gottagetthisguyeither"

If we hadn't gotten Wallace I'd pick up Troy in a heartbeat.
But SW is here and as long as Holmgren is too Seneca won't be going anywhere. So that kinda makes Troy odd man out.
Too bad. I think he could be a good backup on this team.

Smith finds a new home ...... http://www.cleveland.com/ohio-sports-blog/index.ssf/2010/09/troy_smith_picked_up_by_san_fr.htmlTroy Smith picked up by San Francisco 49ers Published: Wednesday, September 08, 2010, 7:58 AM Updated: Wednesday, September 08, 2010, 7:58 AM San Francisco has become a place of second chances for two former Ohio State Buckeyes. Earlier this summer, the 49ers acquired wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. via trade with the Miami Dolphins. On Monday night, the 49ers signed quarterback Troy Smith who was recently released by the Baltimore Ravens. Ginn Jr. and Smith were teammates at Glenville High School and Ohio State. To make room for Smith, the 49ers waived rookie quarterback Nate Davis

Alex Smith is going into his 6th year (5th if you take out 2008 where he didn't take a snap because he was hurt).. but he has shown some improvement, they have a decent team now, he has weapons around him, Crabtree, V Davis, etc...
I think it's "poop or get off the pot" time for Alex Smith... if he doesn't show up fairly big this year I think he's done in San Fran.. does that mean T Smith gets the start? That could be a stretch but who knows.

Right now Smith is third in line for starts. First is obviously Smith. Second is David Carr, who the 49ers signed in the off-season. Then comes Troy Smith.
But if I were to pick a team to go to as a QB, 49ers would be near the top of my list. As both Smith and Carr aren't exactly the cream of the crop. (Although they were both #1 overall picks.)

I agree, it's about as good a situation as T Smith could ask for... Two QBs, neither of which are solid in the job and some decent weapons...

BrownBuck,
As far as I know and I could be wrong, Ohio State has never had a QB make it big in the histroy of the NFL. I've been to the NFL hall of fame several times and don't remember ever seeing an OSU QB there. Smith went wrong way back in high school. He wanted to play QB, but they put him in the best place for his talent at DB. So, he left to play QB for another school.
He like many other college QB's, is the product of the system not his own talent at the position. I really believe if he had stayed at the DB spot he would be a starter in the NFL today and a good one. His ego just got in the way of what was best for him and he wouldn't listen.
His best bet is to go play Arena football or the CFL or another league, he4's simply not a NFL type QB.

he's "in the league" and earning a salary. plus, he has a Heisman trophy on his mantle and some ridiculous good games to tell the grandkids about from college.
given the astronomical odds against all those things from happening (also remember he had to overtake much more highly touted Zwick just to even get the chance at OSU), I don't see how anyone can fault him for his decisions. It sure seems like they worked out for him well.

exactly....i get it not all great college QBs make it in the PROs...but this guy was running a PRO offense in his senior year and was doing it at a high level. I guess thats why he is in the pros and still on a team after all these years, may it not be in a starting role...he def has the leadership qualities to be the starter tho..i'll give him that and nobody can take that away from him.

plus, he's in a great spot to prove himself. possibly the best place in the entire NFL for him (arizona would be the other spot, but I can't tell if they are really enamored with Max Hall or if it's just because they have seen him play next to Leinart and Derek Anderson every day)
1. No highly touted draft pick to jump (yes, both Alex Smith and David Carr were both #1 overall selections, but fans are wise to the limitations of both by this point in their extended careers).
2. Some great weapons in a modified spread passing offense wtih a power running game. Crabtree, Gore, Vernon Davis.
3. A young, possibly very good OL.
4. A no-nonsense coach that I believe would start whoever he thinks is best and not worry about any potential fallout.
So, if he IS starter material for the NFL, I would expect that by next year at this time we start seeing signs that he is going to get his shot. If he is not starter material, well he is still carving himself a nice role as a backup QB and will probably bounce around the league for another 4-6 years doing just that.

Its a good situation for Troy, IMO. His odds of snagging a starting gig for the 49ers are much better than they were in Baltimore. I don't know how strongly their organization believes in Alex Smith, and David Carr isn't exactly a world beater either. If Troy Smith plays well enough he could take that job. They got rid of last years draft pick and brought in Troy so they clearly believe Troy can enhance the level of their ball club.
I hope he does well, I know last year when the QB debates were in high force, Troys name was thrown around in some circles I frequent and had we brought him in (as opposed to Seneca...) I wouldn't have minded. It started around when he said he wanted to come play for The Browns.
