I recently installed Ubuntu within XP via wubi and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of favorite Ubuntu / GNU Linux apps?

Ubuntu's Software Center has so much to choose from that either I might miss out on a useful one or don't know which is the best between similar programs.

I plan to experiment with Wine a bit and have already decided that I want to use Emerald themes. I had this set up in a previous install with translucent orange and brown colors and really liked it.

Thanks. That was on my list. After using Firefox for years I've switched to Chrome. Some of FF's add ons are useful, but Chrome is a bit quicker and I really like the search ability within the address window.

If I'm watching movies I found VLC to be better than ubuntu's movie player.

Beyond that I'm constantly on chrome.
