U betcha...And he'll be here maybe 4 of those 7...Give em' that 18M up front and spread it out...Give em' another hefty bonus in a couple years...His hits will be in the 5-7M a year range...SUPER FOR A STUD CORNER...
Forget the total dollar figures thrown around...IT DON'T MATTER...It's ALL in the SB and Structure...
I bet we go after this kid HARD...And prolly gonna be a FA Opening Day EARLY MORNING Announcement...Much like Bents and Shaffer...
ESPN...
Browns strike quick...AGAIN...
Signed Clements AND Steinbach..............Then comes Traylor...lol...
Go Browns!!!

Thats whut I tried to tell these guys.. we inkie C and S.. we are very well set up for the draft.. Tray is an added bonus, but I'm not really even thinking about that.. sign the 2 and be done with it. We shore up some big needs and give Phil's big board some stress relief and allow him to hammer the lines.
In fact if we sign C and S, I say that gives us the room to take QB or RB in the first (which I oppose, but it does give us the room to do it. Yuck though..)
I can't believe I just said that

Washington held up his end of the bargain. Roye and McKinley went hot and really cold, and that isn't good enough in the 3-4.

isn't everyone forgetting about about perkins? i know he didn't play even when we had the need for corners, so he just might be a bust, but i'm thinking he gets a shot because he was a good punt returner in college...
bodden wasen't doing squat in his first couple years, he was the bottom corner behind lehan and everyone else...all of the sudden he got it....the same could happen to perkins....
i think he would make it as a nickel just because of the possible punt returning...

Kind of amazing, actually, that of all the free agent brought in, 93 year old Ted Washington performed the best, so-so as it was.
Bentley - knee spontaneously combusted before he played a down Hallen - crapped his pants and is currently at home sucking his thumb McGinnest - played like he was supposed when he made it on the field, which wasn't often enough. Baxter - just really depressing. I feel bad for the guy, really do. why couldn't this have happened to ralph brown instead? Shaffer - okay, he did alright, for a right guard. Jurevicius - Better than Ted, actually. Wish he would've been on the field more. Zastudil - only local kid who actually played in every game. Congrats!
How much money have we spend on free agents that have exploded? I'm so sad.

yes most of us are trying to.

I agree big time. Bodden is a good player, but he isn't a great player. People tend to elevate him because they compare him to the other bums we have had over the past few years.
Well said Peen.
As far a Corners go.....the lions are allowing Drey Blye to seek a trade. I say we move up to their slot and get Blye in return for our pick. They want to move down and Millen just might be crazy enough to do it.;)
Seriously though. Drey Blye is a good CB, he has acouple of pro-bowls in the last several years. He is solid and I dont think he would take nealry as much as it would to get Clements...who in all reality isnt allthat.

I didnt edit this early enough but we would have to do a deal to get Bly. He isnt a FA but he is going to playing somewhere other than Detroit next year.
I think that Bly would probably come for cheaper than Clements ultimately even if we gave a draft pick. Anybody got anything on Blye?.

Yeah, he's old and expensive. I don't want any part of a band-aid player.

U get a Clements in here and get Williams on the field for MGinest...Let Russel go in FA (Reports say we ain't even close in $$$...LATER CHUMP)...And get ONE TOP END and another NT in here and this D improves significantly...
If we get 3 DL, 4 linebackers, 2 corners and 2 safetys, we are gonna be ok!

Do you think we will finally see him at punt returner this year, or does Savage have other ideas?

Has anyone else heard the Phil Savage interview on WTAM? It's 22:07 long and Phil talks about a lot of interesting stuff... To the point... During the interview the host plays Phil a sound clip, from one of his previous interviews with Donte Whitner that goes like this... The host says to Whitner, " How bout the Browns lookin for a corner and bringin Donte Whitner back home, so that you can play right here." Then Whitners like, " Nah ... u got Nate Clements on the... um..." Then someone in background says, " On the way!" Then Whitner says, " On the way this year... ya know?... Yeah... Nate Clements is a free agent... Browns got a lot of money... Go out and get Nate." If I knew how to post the link I would, I thought you guys might like the interview a lot... If you want to hear it a poster has it posted on dawgbones.com... It's a link on the right side of the main page, titled Savage On WTAM Tonight. If you find it would you mind posting it right here, that is if it isn't already somewhere else... and I definately recommend atleast listening to it.

I listened to the interview but I don't feel comfortable putting a link to it because I believe it is in violation of the rules( link is from another message board). Tried WTAM but did not see the interview there.

just clicking on your post... Clements fits in Browns schemeFriday, February 23, 2007 By Steve Doerschuk repository sports writer INDIANAPOLIS Cornerback Nate Clements covers wideouts like a blanket and fits Cleveland like a glove. Dick Jauron rues the thought of Clements setting up camp in any home where the Buffalo Bills don't roam. No matter. Look for Nate to skate. "He really played well last season," Jauron, the Bills head coach, said of Clements, who will hit the free agent market at 12:01 a.m. March 2. "He'd already made a name for himself, but he stepped it up. ... He played at a really high level." Jauron made the observation at the NFL Combine. After slipping into a hallway at the Indianapolis Convention Center, he declined to say why the Bills haven't placed the franchise tag on such a valuable player, expressing hope the Bills somehow can keep him. Insiders say Clements is long gone, mainly because he will price himself out of the Bills' willingness to commit up-front bonus cash. Count on Cleveland owner Randy Lerner to spend what's needed to secure key players. The Bills slapped the franchise tag on Clements last year, a one-year arrangement requiring him to be paid the average of the NFL's top-five cornerbacks. The tag is not player-friendly in that it keeps stars from bolting for break-the-bank, long-term deals. Bills insiders confirmed what Jauron did not, that Clements wasn't tagged this time after the team promised last year they wouldn't do it again. Bills and Browns insiders say Clements embraces the idea of playing for the Browns, whose stadium is a 25-minute drive from his alma mater, Shaker Heights High School. The Browns are hurting at cornerback, as much so as at any position. So pursuing Clements is a no-brainer. A first-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2001, he has started six years for the Bills yet is only 27 years old. He hasn't played in a Pro Bowl since the 2004 season, which is just window dressing in Jauron's eyes. Buffalo's coach views him as an elite player coming off his best year. Clements has Titans on his wish list By Terry McCormick, tmccormick@nashvillecitypaper.comFebruary 26, 2007 INDIANAPOLIS —Buffalo Bills cornerback Nate Clements, soon to be an unrestricted free agent, has the Tennessee Titans high on the list of teams he is interested in playing for, according to a source at the NFL Combine. The Titans are not allowed by league rules to comment on players before they hit the free agent market, which opens March 2, but Clements is a player who would be a major upgrade for a defense that ranked near the bottom of the NFL this past season. Clements is regarded as the top cornerback on the free agent market, and there are those in the Titans organization who believe he is a good fit for their system. Clements is expected to have plenty of suitors, and there have been reports that the Washington Redskins could make a strong pitch to land Clements. Cleveland could also have interest. Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt identified cornerback as one of the team’s biggest needs this offseason, along with wide receiver and defensive end. Some of those needs will be addressed via the draft, but free agency is a tool the Titans will have at their disposal. According to Reinfeldt, the Titans will have around $20-$30 million available under the league’s $109 million salary cap once they tender their restricted free agents. In terms of cornerbacks, the draft is well stocked, the general manager said. “I don’t think you can ever have enough cornerbacks in the NFL. If you look at teams, they have two, three and ideally you’d liked to have five. So you can never have enough good cornerbacks,†Reinfeldt said, speaking of the draft. Added coach Jeff Fisher, “We’ll look at both markets, obviously very closely.†The Titans’ cornerback situation has been further clouded by the controversy surrounding Adam “Pacman†Jones and to what extent he might be involved in the melee that resulted in a triple shooting in a Las Vegas strip club last week. The Titans have said they will have to wait until the Las Vegas police complete their investigation before deciding how they will handle the situation involving Jones. Source

When's your birthday? I'll send you some glasses
The last article says the Titans have that much in cap space, not that it'll take that kind of money to sign him, hehe.

Thought you were reflecting the 20-30 million in cap space number that was reported for the Titans.
Now if you're just saying he could get $20 mil in SB money out of the blue, I don't think we've gotten to that point yet. He could get that kind of money in guarantees in some fashion, but not in simple SB money.

Fellas , I doubt if Opie doesn't any high priced signings this year..he may fool me but we need quality quantity..there may be one nice big signing and several lower tier (but upscale from the chumps we have had).. We can't get into bidding wars and destroy the cap..we have to be careful we're getting value for the selections..

C'mon...It's gonna be 18-25M...
He wants Bailey and then some...Bailey got what???...20M up front???
And Gawd knows how much more in Guaranteed bucks...
Still...21M in SB is only 3M a year in cap hit on a 7 year deal...plus Bases and any other RB/WOB for that particular year...
Luv to have Clements...But no biggie if we don't
Go Browns!!!

Bailey's deal was 7 years, $63 million with $18 million SB and $5 million in other bonuses (although I'm not sure when those other bonuses kick in).
I'd really like Clements to be a Brown. However, I'd have a problem giving him Bailey's money+ because, as good as he is, he's no Champ Bailey.
