Wolverine Fan Warns Miami Nation of the Wrath of Buckeye Nation
By Thom Darrt and John Porentas

The Buckeye Nation found a friend in an unusual place yesterday, in the Wolverine Nation.

The whole thing started with all the talk coming out of Miami that the game this Saturday somehow is a grudge match for the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Miami fans have been barking that bark all week, and some players on the Miami roster have taken up that howl.

Things came to a head a little later this week when Miami Head Coach Randy Shannon said the following about the prospect of playing in Columbus and in Ohio Stadium.

"You see a lot of traditions in small towns and little cities like Columbus.

"But the guys (his players) aren't enamored with it because of what we see when we go out.

"You may see an Alex Rodriguiz, a Wayans Brother, or Dwayne Wade. Those are big name guys."

A rebuttal coming from a Buckeye fan to the revenge theory or to Shannon's remarks might sound like just so much chest beating or bickering between fan bases, but last night a Michigan Wolverine fan posted a rebuttal on the-Ozone Fan Forum. With his permission, this is what Thom Dartt, a MICHIGAN FAN who has no real use for the Buckeyes, had to say to Miami Nation and Shannon.

"Randy Shannon does what people who don't understand Ohio State football and its fans tend to do: Underestimate them and RUN THEIR MOUTHS.

"Shannon, who obviously has his Doctorate in Geography, referred to Columbus as a "small town."

"Pssssst! Randy! Over here! Yeah, um Miami has a population of about 362,000. Mmmm hmmm, and Columbus has a population of about 710,000. That's TWICE the size of LITTLE Miami. In fact, Miami would be the 4th largest city in Ohio, JUST ahead of Toledo and Dayton.

"Then he says his team sees 'stars all the time' like THE WAYANS BROTHERS. Hang on just a second. I have to check my definition of 'star'/'celebrity.' Yep, I thought so. NONE of the Wayans brothers, sisters, parents or grandparents are stars or celebrities, unless they were at the Bellbrook festival. And even then...

"See, what this idiot fails to realize is that this game is about the Ohio State fans. None of the players even remember 2002. Few, if any of Miami's coaches, were on their staff in 2002. Some of Ohio State's were.

"Ah, but the fans were all there THEN and they're all here NOW. And the Scarlet and Gray legions have had to hear over and over and over and over how they got lucky to win the Fiesta Bowl, that Miami REALLY won that game, that Miami was robbed...

"Guilty. I was one of the ones that said they were lucky. After further review, Ohio State out-played Miami.

"Anyway, Ohio State fans have been seething about those comments and couldn't wait for this game. Nope, it's not a 'rematch,' but to Ohio State's fans this means A LOT!

"So, Randy, as a Michigan fan, whom the Buckeye faithful HATE, let me help you to understand what you'll face on Saturday: 100,000+ FREAKING WACKOS who have had time to let that hate and anger for that stupid U build for nearly eight years (And they WON! Can you imagine if they had lost on that call???), who have an anger management issue with people who talk smack about their team/town, who will have several hours to enjoy a few adult beverages, and who want to win every game like their lives depend on it.

"They will yell incessantly, cheer every one of their good plays (followed by the chords of various Buckeye songs after those plays), REALLY cheer every one of your bad plays, and never sit down. Oh, and unlike the LITTLE stadiums you play in, this one is BIG and it will be FULL, and IT WILL BE LOUD.

"See, Randy, this isn't Boston College, North Carolina or even Florida State you're playing. Those LIBRARIES would be sweet compared to the insane asylum that awaits your team on Saturday. Trust me. I've been there five times for Michigan games, and several more for other games.

"You made a mistake and the Buckeye fans do NOT forgive.

"Oh, and one other trivial matter: YOU WILL LOSE. Badly."

First the Beatles said it, then Joe Cocker said it. You can get by with a little help from your friends.

I'm not sure if Thom would like to known as a friend to the Buckeye Nation, but he certainly endeared himself to a few with his comments yesterday.

Ohio State-Miami: 5 questions
1. Who will win the quarterback battle?

High-profile games often mean a battle between star quarterbacks. Saturday will be no different as Ohio State trigger man Terrelle Pryor clashes with Miami junior Jacory Harris.

The two are similar in a few ways. Both are dual-threat quarterbacks. Both passed for more than 3,000 yards last year. Both were handed the keys to their respective offenses as underclassmen. I'm pretty sure Pryor did NOT pass for more than 3000 yards..he was closer to 2000

“I think [Pryor and Harris] have traveled a similar road,” OSU coach Jim Tressel said. “They both got put in there at an early point in their freshman year. But in [Pryor’s] case, it was the third or fourth game and he had to kind of get thrown in with an older group and learn their way.”

2. Will either team be able to run the ball effectively?

Both defenses will be geared to stuff the run. Miami has a solid cache of defensive linemen, led by a genuine freak-of-nature in 6-foot-3, 287-pound senior Allen Bailey, who is not only a probable first-round pick in next April’s draft, but reportedly killed an alligator with nothing but a shovel a few years ago.

As for OSU, the Silver Bullets are usually stout against the run. The OSU defense has ranked in the top five in the nation in fewest rushing yards allowed in three of the last five years.

Miami coach Randy Shannon said starting running back Graig Cooper will likely miss the game, although ACC Rookie of the Week Lamar Miller appears to be a capable backup.

3. Can the OSU offensive line protect Pryor?

The OSU offensive line did an admirable job last Thursday against Marshall. However, comparing the Marshall defensive line to the Miami front four would be foolish. Tressel isn’t taking the Hurricane pass rushers lightly.

“They're very good. They're veterans, they're quick and they're strong,” Tressel said. “It will be a great challenge for our guys.”

Although the Hurricanes have a star in Bailey and a few other solid players, the OSU hog mollies should be equipped to handle the task.

4. Who will win the field position battle?

The combination of the crowd, OSU’s ability to force turnovers and Harris’ propensity to throw the football to the other team all favor the Scarlet and Gray.

But nearly every one of those characteristics could have been said for the USC game last year and OSU lost that contest, 18-15.

On the other hand, if the Buckeyes have the lead heading into the fourth quarter, the game is usually over.

Under Tressel, OSU is 86-6 when taking the lead into the final quarter. Disclaimer: OSU led USC, 15-10, heading into the fourth quarter last year.

5. Will an unknown player, coaching decision or (gasp!) referee steal the show?

Obviously, all three are impossible to predict. But in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, the game was defined by curious coaching decisions and questionable calls by officials.

From official Terry Porter’s infamous pass interference call in the first overtime, to Tressel’s decision to run a fake field goal early in the game to Miami’s downright dubious goal line offense in the second overtime, the game was full of judgments ripe for barroom discussion.

As for an unknown player stealing the show, for Miami, sophomore safety Ray Ray Armstrong and Ohio State sophomore running back Jordan Hall could provide the difference.

Armstrong is big (6-foot-4, 220 pounds), fast and saw major playing time as a freshman. If he keeps the OSU passing game in front of him and reads Pryor’s eyes, his performance will be two-fold: tackling receiver Dane Sanzenbacher over the middle of the field and intercepting Pryor.

The diminutive Hall could make an impact as a punt returner. Think former LSU star Trindon Holliday, the 5-foot, 6-inch speed sprint champion who also specialized as a returner for the Tigers. Hall is capable of making a similar impact for OSU. This could be his breakout game.

I'm officially ticked at the weather, I was thinking of riding my bike over the the shoe and soak up some pr game atmosphere, but it sounds like it's gonna rain all afternoon, to the tune of 1/2 an inch. The rain will also quiet the crowd a bit. Overcast and rain does not make for a festive atmosphere.

Hilarious like Miami of all teams needs to be warned with the trash talking. They do it and will continue do it,I'm sure Randy Shannon talked smack on the field too when he was with the U. Gonna be a great game

Pryor says LeBron James is his mentor. That should work out well.

Is he going to teach him how to choke in big games?

The only angle I can see here is LeBron trying to land Pryor to LMRM. He did the same thing with Wall and then disappeared as a "friend" when Wall decided not to let LeBron's yes men manage his professional career.

Coach: LeBron James welcome at gamee

Kind of a bizarre move by Tressel. I don't really understand why he would want LeBron around at this point.

My guess is that Tressel doesn't actually care and is just giving a non-confrontational soundbite.

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Tress couldn't have sounded more non confrontational in his response. Senator Tressel continues ....

He probably really wanted to say "why do you keep sticking a microphone in front of Terrelle's mouth?"

These are the same people who are glad it's a day time game. They can dine at the M.C.L. in Upper Alrington, catch a Matlock rerun and still be in bed by 8 PM.

Yep, Tuscaloosa...

I'm guessing they are saving Columbus for Michigan or Iowa or Wisconsin or Penn State (not sure which of those are home)

My guess would be that they'll do the OSU @ Iowa game and then be in Columbus for Michigan.

It's a good match-up, but I would say SC/Georgia is better.

The loser of that is pretty much done for the season as far as the SEC East..

surprise, surprise... espn's mark may just picked miami in the upset. seriously, it was fun for a few seasons, but now he just looks like a fool picking against the Bucks every week. how does he keep his job being wrong almost every time. I realize that someone had to fill the Trev Alberts role, but it seems after this many years, espn would find another less successful team to second guess every week.

To me it's a no brainer to be at teh PSU/ Bama game... two of the most storied college football teams of all time and it's be what? 16 years since they last played... I'm almost as excited about that game as I am the OSU game.

I think PSU will hang in there, but bama wins a close one. Even if it's a blow out it's still pretty exciting for those two teams to meet.

you couldn't pay me to go to a bar, let alone a campus bar to watch this game. I hate missing plays during a big game and have my attention elsewhere, going to a bar you'll miss at least a few plays and barely catch a half dozen others. Let alone the no smoking deal, struggling to get a drink in a timely manner. So ive got a couple buddy's coming over and its gonna be just right.

I'm real confused here...

On Miami's first offensive play, after the players went in motion, they had three guys wide right, one wide left, and two backs in the backfield with Harris. So, how did they not have either 12 men on the field, or only 4 guys on the line. What am I missing here? This feels like a total "duh" moment, so someone please tell me why.

Yeah. Just did some reading. I was always under the impression that you had to have five players lined up in close, but apparently that is not the case; as long as you have your seven men on the LOS they can be lined up as wide as you want them to be.

Learn something new every day!

Wish Pryor would've run that ball in instead of forcing the pass. Also wish Tress would go for the jugular on 4th and goal from the 3. Oh well, 3 is better than zero.
