Lord, I pray for healing of Charlie's soul. He is a lost young man that is need of not only your love but the love of all of us Christians.
Please, do not do that. I find it disgusting that people would actually sit around in their pajamas before bed asking a make-believe invisible person to "show me the light".

The ancient hebrew which was translated to rape in this instance are used other places in the Bible where they clearly don't mean rape.. they mean to have sex with.. God doesn't condone rape...

I don't pray before night in my pajamas. I pray throughout the day, and usually go to the Catholic Church right behind my house and light candles and pray in a small room that is set up for prayer. The Lord has used me as an instrument to do good here on earth. Part of my duties as a servant of God is to pray for lost souls so they can feel God's love. I will still be praying for you my brother...

Charlie, you do realize that Muslims, by their own admission, pray to the same "invisible thing" Christians do ... right? (Except they do it 5 times a day, every day)

As for this lady ... I would consider condemning masturbation to be a clear indication of being a little crazy.
As for the whole Tea Party thing ... the whole push for the GOP to return to conservatism is an eventual failure ... the Republican party as we know it has never been conservative. Their poster boy, Reagan, didn't even approach conservatism. So I think it's a lost cause on that front...
I think there's a lot of nuts in the whole movement, and a lot of folks who are just repeating buzzwords ... but if they completely distanced themselves from the GOP ... they might have something.

From the Christian perspective, you would be wrong.
Jesus teaches that not only is having sex outside of marriage wrong, so is fantasizing about it.. masturbation requires that kind of visualization and fantasy... I suppose if you masturbated thinking about your husband or wife that you might have found a loophole.. but who wants to do that?

I find the wackier sect of Christianity stems from observing the letter of the law rather than the spirit of the law. I think this area is just such an example.
Suppressing sexuality leads to abnormality ... look no further than the Catholic church.
And from a Christian viewpoint or not ... condemning masturbation is pretty crazy.
I had to write a paper back in college regarding the changes that took place throughout the course of the Bible ... and sex was one of the biggest changes. In some early texts, sex that wasn't for reasons of procreation was denounced.
And I am always fascinated by how folks treat the Bible as if it's some sacred word ... when that word is constantly being changed, ignored and altered throughout history. It's a product of man, not of a holy entity.

I simply pointed out that I do not like some person I do not know going to a church and communicating with an invisible being talking about me "finding the light".

From what I heard ... percentage wise, the number of pedofiles found in the CC is about the same as any other profession ... but if say, a construction worker gets busted for sex crimes, nobody cares about what line of work he was in.

This is great news, this government is so messed up and it needs a total overhaul from top to bottom. Our whole political system has become such a disaster over the past decade and seems to keep getting more out of control. I'm not the most politically educated person but its easy to see that things cannot keep going the way they have been, taxes are getting out of control and only gonna keep getting worse as the debt rises.
One thing history teaches us is that all Governments fail no matter how big or small, my only question is how much longer is this current government architecture gonna be around in this country and what will come after its failure.

While you're almost undoubtedly correct, I have to ask...Should the priest not be held to a standard above everyone else?
I believe that it is an atrocity that the pope was not immediately stripped of his papacy when it came to light that he was aiding and abetting pedophiles and rapists.
I also believe we need to stop attempting to legislate religious beliefs. Gay marriage is the best example that comes to mind. There is no good reason not to allow gay marriage except for that the bible condemns homosexuality. If you personally believe that you will spend eternity in a burning inferno if you like to sword fight with another dude, that's cool with me. But that isn't what I believe and I shouldn't have to be persecuted if one day I decide if I want to be gay.
Christians wouldn't like it if were elected and I legislated my belief that anyone who believes that there is a god up in the sky who gives them instructions on specific tasks they need to complete should be immediately sterilized. That encompasses everyone from the guy who bombs an abortion clinic because god told him to do it to the lady who walks up to me at the gas station and tells me god told her to give me this pamphlet for her church.
Both are absurd but one is actually the law. To me, that is a huge problem. I think personal beliefs should be just that - personal. Believe what you want to believe in your own home but don't force them on others. Crazy, right?

No Phil. There are healthy ways to express it and unhealthy ways to express it. I personally am not an some kind of crusade against masturbation.. I just find it funny that we put up Victoria Secrets Billboards all over town and in the malls, we cut away to commercials at the football game showing some large breasted cheerleader in shorts that are so tight they look like part of her DNA, pre-teen, teen and young adult males are subjected to this day after day after day after day... then we say, suppression of sexual urges leads to abnormality... We are not teaching young boys (used to just be young boys but in the interest of equality we have been working equally diligently at screwing up young girls now too) but we are not teaching them how approach sex in the proper framework... for all of our englightenment, what we are teaching boys, or what society is teaching them and some parents are working very hard to overcome, is that women are objects and sex is about the physical release.. and that's it. It has little to do with love, it has little to do with intimacy, it has little to do with relationships.. it's about getting the hottest girl you can find and getting your rocks off.... and if you don't succumb to that way of thinking, evidently you are abnormal...

I agree with this and your entire point wholeheartedly.
However, I think that demonizing sex (and masturbation along with it) is as equally damaging as the mindset that you've described.

Very very very very very few go as far as demonizing.. stating it isn't right (or that it is a sin) isn't exactly demonizing it.. it's just a matter of teaching kids that the first step to respecting your body is respecting your mind.. if you fill your mind with crap, the expect your body to follow...

I agree with this. I worry that she's of the sect that believes the USA was founded as a christian nation above all else and should reflect those ideals in law.
I'm quite happy that a third party candidate made it to the big leagues though. That can never be bad IMO.

Doesn't need to be recent. Remember, Christianity is still the devil according to some because of the crusades. If you're christian, your past haunts you forever.
If you're anything BUT christian, you can do and say as you please, and freely change minutes later, and then say "Oh, you're trying to hold that against me? Your a bigot".

I worry about this too. Its one thing to have beliefs and conviction in those beliefs. That I have no problem with and even consider it a positive quality. However, believing something that is inherently and factually proven to be false (I actually addressed the myth the founding father's were christian and that we were founded as a christian nation in another thread that went wholly ignored because it doesn't jive with the theme of the board ) and then legislating those false beliefs, well, that isn't acceptable to me.
But I agree, I'm glad there's a possibility that a 3rd party can gain some traction. The political landscape in this country could certainly use it. I think the best solution to our current problems of do what we want and then fool the average shat for brains citizen into arguing with each other over rhetoric so we get away with it will be to show these politicians that we are paying attention and there are consequences to their actions. If that means just voting out every incumbent with a new republican or democrat every single election until they wake up or helping a 3rd party rise up to the big leagues, I really don't have a preference. I just want to see it done and I'm going to make sure I vote every election so that I do my part. Once we weed out the baby boomers who caused all the damage we can build from there.
I just got a flier for Frank LaRose for the Ohio Senate and I think I'm gonna give this new guy my vote. I generally haven't been voting republican because I'm sick of their bull ..., but we need new blood until the generation in power now that is destroying the country is made irrelevant. Let us young folks give it a shot, we certainly can't do any worse.

Oh right.. gays can't join the military for some logical secular reasons..and they can't marry.. and alcohol went through prohibition and is still the last "right" you get growing up, years AFTER you get to drive, vote, smoke, marry, fight and die, etc...... and abortion was illegal and still has plenty of restrictions on it (not enough but plenty).. drugs are illegal, strip clubs are frowned upon most places, prostitution is illegal in all but a couple places..... and we get Christmas and Good Friday/Easter off but not Passover, Hanukkah, Kwanza and Ramadan... then there are the prayers to God plastered all over our government buildings and the number of our agencies that begin sessions with prayer not to Allah, not to Buddah, not to a nameless diety.. to God....... all of this occurred out of our secular non-Christian past... ...
We are not, by constitution, a Christian nation, we do not have, thank God, a national religion.. but if you do not understand that Christianity has been the single biggest guiding influence in this nation for over 200 years and how it has affected the development and enforcement of our laws then I will just bow out of this conversation now and invite you to replace your head back in that hole in the sand from which it came...

I never said it wasn't a guiding principle, just that we weren't founded as a christian nation. We shouldn't confuse that. One could make the argument that the past two hundred years of christian influenced law goes against the founding ideal of a non "government endorsed, and sponsored, religion."
It's because of this past that christians feel like we as a nation are being taken farther from our "roots" and descending into godlessness. Hence the moderate success, in highly conservative areas mostly, recently of the far religious right, or those that believe we were founded as a christian nation, pushing into political circles like we see in the Texas Board of Education and other areas of high influence. I don't have any problems with any religion and a person's relationship with their God, but we as a united people cannot start down this path (again) of legislating from a religious platform. It can eventually lead to a theocracy like we see in Iran where women are murdered for minor indiscretions and wars started in the name of the one true religion like we saw hundreds of years ago with the Crusades.

One could but they would have to also explain to me how that fits with a representative democracy where the people elect the officials and the officials make the laws.. as long as those laws are not in direct conflict with somebody elses religion and as long as they don't force anybody to practice Christianity.. then it would be a hard sell.

We have spent the last 200+ years sort of moving away, then moving back, then away, then back.. thing is that when we move back, we never move all the way back to where we started so the general trend is away. Given the diversity of our country and the checks and balances of our government, the only way we can get from where we are to a religious theocracy such as Iran or to anything resembling the crusades would be by violent overthrow.. It's not going to happen by electing a few far right tea party folks.. They will get elected, they might tweak this law or that law, the people will get fed up and they will be voted out by more liberal people who want "change".. That's how it works.

Oh, I agree. I do however worry about a "perfect storm" so to speak, where a select few of like minded individuals will dictate certain aspects of life for the rest of us. Again I reference the Texas Board of Education situation where a certain group of ideologues have affected the presentation of teaching materials for a large majority of the country to reflect their own beliefs rather than a non-biased accurate accounting of the facts.

No offense but is that not what's happening now with Obama, Pelosi, and Reid?.. Are they not dictating aspects of our lives because they have control? Are they not like minded idealogues? Why do people only fear it when it has the word "Christian" associated with it? As if other groups of like minded idealogues couldn't possibly be that scary..

Things like this can happen on a local or even regional level, not as likely to happen on a national level.. especially since there is no real checks and balance system as to what a school board decides to do.. and if they are impacting what books get printed then perhaps is the fault of the printers.. Can't some other liberal groups publish their own textbooks if schools in Minnesota don't want to use the same ones they use in Texas? This problem seems easily overcome by people who just refuse to be lazy.

No offense taken, I hold no love for the main aspects of the current administration. You're exactly correct though. I may have a more liberal lean in life than the majority on this board, however, I'm not excited when anyone gains such a large majority that they're able to dictate how lives should be run without hearing and considering the possible ramifications of their actions. Everything should be debated and considered. There are no sacred cows.

Sure. However, the problem is that Texas as a state is the largest buyer of textbooks in the country. As the largest consumer, the textbook companies tailor the majority of their stock towards the regulations of Texas as well as decreasing the prices of these "best-sellers" because although the profit margin is smaller, they sell the crap out of them. When faced with a biology book that costs 40$ as opposed to 60$, which will a school system buy?

Is it just me or is anyone else seeing a lot the same hope, change, and patriotism rhetoric from the tea party candidates as we saw with Obama when he was running for the presidency back in 2008? I'm not saying their views are off base but if they get elected into their positions what chance do they have at actually making an impact in the realm of partisan politics?

Well, would you honestly expect them to run on a platform of "Same old, same old"?

Is it just me or is anyone else seeing a lot the same hope, change, and patriotism rhetoric from the tea party candidates as we saw with Obama when he was running for the presidency back in 2008?
Pretty much, only without the patriotism part.. Every candidate runs on change because if things are good then why vote out the incumbents? incumbents usually run on the "we have the right plan we just aren't there yet" approach.. otherwise known as the Phil Savage platform..

I'm not saying their views are off base but if they get elected into their positions what chance do they have at actually making an impact in the realm of partisan politics?
If the tea party can get enough folks elected, I think they stand a great chance of making things more partisan.

I'm not really a fan of the tea party but I'm pulling for them for no reason other than they might be the most realistic option we've had in my lifetime of having a 3rd relevant party. I want them to open the door for others, and then preferably get out of the way

I'm not sure if I could get behind true partisan policies. To me both sides have good ideas and bad ideas but they should both work willingly together to do what's right for the citizens of the United States of America. However, I highly doubt that's going to happen anytime soon.
