Report: Browns called Eagles last night about Kolb

Posted by Mike Florio on September 22, 2010 12:51 PM ET

Those in the Philly front office who believed in quarterback Kevin Kolb included the team's General Manager.

Tom Heckert is now the G.M. of the Browns. And Anthony Gargano of WIP in Philly reports that Heckert's Browns already have called about a possible trade for Kolb.

Specifically, the call was placed last night, and the Browns were told that Kolb isn't available.

But maybe he could be. Coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that that he can't predict whether Kolb will be on the roster past the trade deadline. And that means that maybe Kolb will be traded between now and October 19.

Reid: no guarantee Kolb will be on team after trade deadline

Highlights from Andy Reid's morning press conference:

-- He said he can't predict if Kevin Kolb would remain on the team past the trade deadline, but emphasized again that Kolb has "a bright future."

-- He said no one else came to him about the decision - not coaches or players or upper management.

-- He said Vick is the starter for the rest of the year based on his great play, which no one could anticipate would be at such a high level.

-- He conceded that Kolb would still have the job if he did not get hurt.

More after we talk to Kolb and Vick shortly.

Why not... if Heckert believes, I believe at this point.

If Kolb > Wallace and can come cheap, then I pull the trigger.

Wow ......

Kolb gets one game as a starter .... and then he's done?

The question might be, is Kolb more of a long term answer than McCoy? It's tough for me to say just because I didn't feel like I saw enough of McCoy to really pass judgment. And, I don't really know a ton about Kolb.

My guess is this was a "hey, what would it take for us to land him" inquiry where we weren't all that serious about making the move, just doing due diligence.

But, we'll see, I guess.

Excellent question.

I think at this point I would part w/ Davis, a chunk of our LBs and a late round pick or two.

It really depends on how highly rated Heckert has Kolb. If the kid is the real deal in his eyes, I am serious about getting it done. If it's just testing the waters to see if they could toss them a 7th rounder, then it's a non-event.

Personally I know zip on the guy, so hard to say what I'd give up for him.

Kolb is no better than Wallace IMO. Don't do it... especially if it involves trading next years draft picks, more particular 3rd and up...

Why is K-O-L-B pronounced "Kobb"?

It doesn't make sense, like if the song by Janis Joplin had been titled "Me and Bolby McGee".

It's annoying.

while i'm open to a kolb trade, i have to ask why the eagles might be willing to do it. vick is a free agent next year (unless reid plans on resigning vick) so is trading kolb an indictment? i don't know. on the other side, heckert was part of the scouting/drafting team that took him in the 2nd so i could have confidence in the move if that's what we did as well. i'm torn. he won't come cheap though, that's for sure. at least a 3rd.

Another question to consider, Is he a better option than someone coming out in the draft next year. Wasn't the asking price for him over the summer a first and a second? Since it seems like we'll probably be at the top of the draft somewhere, one could reason that we would be giving philly a high first round pick for his rights. Basically a Kolb for a future rookie QB. Is that worth it? One of the Draftniks would probably have to answer that for me ...

Well I don't think he'll come that cheap. Didn't he sign a huge deal over there in the off season? Something like 10 mil a year, IIRC. And Philly isn't saying that he blew the job. They're saying he is sitting because Vick blew the doors off.

They're going to start out asking for a ton and as the deadline nears, we'll see a more realistic price tag. But I think he'll have to rework his huge contract for anyone to be interested. Unless you get a Buffalo coming in there with a Hail Mary.

Me, I'm not sure he's all that much better than what we already have in the QB stables here and all this must have done something pretty bad to his psyche. Plus he's coming off a concussion and who knows with those. Could be chronically predisposed to them which is not a good thing.

I'll believe it when I see it from others. As of this morning we weren't part of the conversation like some other teams.

If Heckert believes he can be the man, then we do it.

Heckert knows him better than anyone here.

Just depends on how much Heckert believes in him and what it will cost.

Kolb has a more complete resume than Schaub did when he was traded for 2 2nd round picks and a player (I think it was some KR, Tim Dwight?)

I would imagine that would be the baseline of any trade discussions and there would be performance escalators, etc.

I like Kolb a great deal. I think he would do well here. But, I'd be hesitant to give up too much for him in case what we saw last season (2 straight 300+ yard games, good command of the WCO, very accurate passer) was an illusion (he was very accurate in college at Houston as well).

Who cares.. so we go into camp next year with Delhomme, Wallace, Kolb, Luck, and McCoy.. who cares.. it worked for Tampa Bay.

IF he believes that he WILL be as good as any QB coming out in this Draft, and IF we're strongly looking at taking a QB high in this draft.. then you do it for no other additional reason than finances.

Any signing bonus money for his contract is all on Philly... we'd only be on the hook for salaries and future roster/workout bonuses.

The Browns’ ever-changing quarterback situation could take a dramatic turn.
Kevin Kolb, a favorite of Browns General Manager Tom Heckert, is likely on the trading block now that Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid has named Michael Vick as the team’s starter.
The Eagles thought so much of Kolb that they traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins so Kolb could be groomed as the unquestioned starter for 2010. When Kolb was injured in the season opener, though, Vick took over and made an impression. Then, Vick started Game 2 and showed flashes of being the player that made him a No. 1 overall draft pick in 2001.
Kolb is ready to come back, but Reid has said Vick will start Sunday at Jacksonville.
Reid told Philadelphia media this week that he would not predict whether Kolb, 26, will be with the Eagles after the trade deadline, which is 4 p.m. Oct. 19.
Reid, whose interest in Kolb could turn to elevating his trade value, said Kolb has “a bright future.”
Heckert was the Eagles’ general manager in 2007 when they picked Kolb in the second round. The Browns could have had him then, but General Manager Phil Savage instead opted to trade into the first round to take Brady Quinn at No. 22 overall.
Philadelphia radio station WIP has reported that the Browns have contacted the Eagles about a possible trade for Kolb.
Cleveland could have a high 2011 draft pick to offer, with the Browns in danger of falling to 0-3 Sunday at Baltimore.

Presumably, Heckert will start with something along the lines of, “C’mon, Andy, it looks like it’s going to be a pretty high pick in Round 2, too. Give a friend a break.”

Seneca Wallace has a West Coast-offense background that might suit Reid.

to think we could've just drafted him in the 2nd instead of trading up for quinn...

So after 2 games and a concussion I'm supposed to buy that Corn on the Cob will be traded ;after they dealt McNabb to make Kolb #1..and then go to Vick and now trade Kolb????
Yeah that makes sense to me.. ..

Would the Eagles want another RB? McCoy gets the bulk of their carries.

The Eagles would probably want a QB back, as they would need a backup. Which guy would you part with?

The Eagles run a 4-3, I doubt that they are drooling over any of our LBs.

It would probably take McCoy or Wallace and a 3rd-5th range pick. That's my guess anyway.

Interesting.. Kolb and Moore.. they were supposed to be the heir apparent for their team, one has been yanked for Michael Vick, the other has been yanked for a rookie..

I honestly don't know when I remember so many voluntary QB changes in the first few weeks.. I think Ammo's point about QB play is dead on and the league is coming to understand it, if you don't have solid QB play, you can't win.. and the time you get to develop it is about... ok, that's over, is he in the pro bowl yet? Good luck Mr. Bradford.

And if I'm Heckert and I KNOW what I get with Kolb, while NO IDEA on McCoy, I do the trade. With one, both QB's whatever.

But depends on Heckert's view of him. If he's a slight upgrade to Wallace, then I do the trade for Wallace on the cheap. If he's a major upgrade to ANY QB here (incl Delhomme) I do the trade at just about any cost.

Until we have an idea of what Heckert thinks of him (if we ever find out) then it's hard to say what you trade to get him here.

Yeah, which of the 3 qbs we have are gone..

Seneca doesn't deserve to be cut or traded,, McCoy is way too new to rate I would think (of course, maybe they have decided on him,, dunno) and trading Delhomme is a slap to a veteran QB.. He wasn't playing that bad until he got hurt so that doesn't seem right.

Another thought,, what if Delhommes injury is more serious than we are being told?

Ahh, you are right,, they ain't trading Kolb.....

I'm pretty sure this is all moot anyway as I don't foresee Kolb being traded, but since when do feelings and what's "deserved" overshadow that which takes place on the football field? If the guy can be a franchise QB, you don't hold onto two non-solutions to a problem because of how they may personally take it...

This is all very interesting. Reed must be ticked off that this leaked out of his building to the radio.

I think Kolb will be a good one, but he sure has struggled thru the preseason and to his concussion.

I doubt Philly does this move, unless they sign Vick to a long term deal. Wallace would have to be part of the trade- Philly would need a backup (there goes the much hyped cyclone package). And for what its worth- Rogers would be a fine addition to their d-line as well.

I just wonder what the asking price would be for him? I personally think Matt Flynn is the better prospect, however, we could do much worse then Kolb and I would not be opposed to acquiring Kolb if the price is right. I think Kolb can be a good Qb in this league.

After all this would free up our 1st rd pick to use on a much needed impact Front 7 Player (DL, OLB, ILB ya im excited)

I think it would be a shocker if we got him for any less than a first.

What kind of arm does the guy have?

Does he stay in the pocket? Step into his throws?

How's his decision making? Can he make reads quickly?

How's his footwork?

Accurate?

That's what I want to know. Anybody have any opinions?

I Think this is probably being blown out of proportion. of course Heckert made a call why wouldnt he. Doesnt mean anything is going to happen.
He was probably just beating the bushes. Making an inquiry with his old team.

unfortunately, I agree which is why despite liking him as a prospect, I don't think it would be worth it for us to obtain.

i liked the guy coming out of college and have seen his 4 games in the pros so I guess I'm as qualified to answer these questions as anybody on here (1/2 against Bal 2 years ago, 2 games last year, his half this year against GB).

Quote:

What kind of arm does the guy have?

not great, but good enough to make all the throws.

Quote:

Does he stay in the pocket? Step into his throws?

yes to both. he is the prototypical pocket QB and he has good mechanics.

Quote:

How's his decision making? Can he make reads quickly?

currently, his biggest weakness. in 3 of his games (Bal, NO, GB) he has had relentless pressure and struggled to get through any of his progressions and I'm not sure he was making the proper hot reads on blitzes. against NO he was able to somewhat overcome this by making really good throws in the face of pressure, but I think it was also a function of that pressure not getting to him quite as quickly.

now, he's a young QB. Rodgers had the same flaw initially. Some QBs learn to read and adjust, some don't. I do not know if he will or not and really, noone else does either (though you would think the Philly coaches would have a pulse on it)

Quote:

How's his footwork?

as mentioned, good. he has a good 3-step and 5-step drop. he doesn't dance around with his feet either when he has time to throw.

Quote:

Accurate?

yes. 64% last season when he actually got to start 2 games, but like all of these, still incomplete until he shows what he can do for a season. but, he at least demonstrated touch on long balls, some zip on the intermediate and doesn't rifle the ball on short throws.
