Verification of what we already knew:

Browns QB Delhomme reportedly benched by high ankle sprain

Jake Delhomme still can't trade his walking boot for cleats.

The quarterback, who injured his right ankle during his Week 1 debut with the Cleveland Browns, hasn't been cleared to practice, and it appears he will be sidelined for this Sunday's game in Baltimore and possibly next week as well.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Thursday, citing a league source, that Delhomme has a high ankle sprain. If that's the case, Delhomme could miss anywhere from four to six weeks.

Browns coach Eric Mangini has been intentionally vague about Delhomme's status, and the team hasn't given any specifics about the severity of the ankle injury, which the 35-year-old sustained while throwing a costly interception during the first half of the opener at Tampa Bay.

If Delhomme can't play, and that appears the case, backup Seneca Wallace will make his second consecutive start Sunday against the Ravens. Last week, the Browns didn't announce Wallace would start the home opener and that Delhomme was inactive until an hour before kickoff.

Delhomme hasn't practiced, nor has he been available to the media this week. A team spokesman said Delhomme was undergoing treatment and will meet with reporters Friday.

Mangini maintains that Delhomme is getting better. Before Thursday's practice, the coach was asked if Delhomme's injury could carry into next week.

"Could it?" Mangini asked. "I think there is potential. He's been progressively better each day. I thought he was moving around pretty good today when I saw him. With injuries, I don't really know. Sometimes they ... I don't know."

Delhomme could be dealing with the dreaded high ankle sprain, an injury from which it can take as long as a month to recover. Mangini said Delhomme is still wearing a protective walking boot, but it's common for players to wear one with similar injuries.

Running back Jerome Harrison (thigh), nose tackle Shaun Rogers, wide receiver Brian Robiskie (ankle) and linebacker Marcus Benard (ankle) also missed practice Thursday. Mangini is optimistic he will have a few players back for Friday's practice.

Was that source me?
I told Daman he has a high ankle sprain..U won't see him for another 3-4 weeks also..remember his age..35..body takes longer to heal .

I'm beginning to think Lauvao has one also..or something close to it.

Think you're right about Lauvao, been too long to be anything else. Knew about Jake's when he premiered the high boot, but also knew there'd be no info forthcoming because Mangini wanted to keep opposing teams guessing. Seems the cat is out of the bag.

He'll be back, just not soon enough for us. Better to fully rehab than to keep re-injuring it. Good news is, he's probably much farther along than Jake, so I'm thinking 2-4 weeks as opposed to Jake's 4-6, (from now).

So will Mangini get in trouble for playing his injured QB and lying about his health?

I have to say, I really hate the way Mangini insists on this stupid dance with the media about injuries.

Why would he get in trouble? His med staff & Jake both told him he was good to go. That's how it's down, medical decisions are the team doctor's responsibility, not the coach's. As far as lying goes, he didn't lie, he kept it quiet as long as possible so as not to tip the opposing team to which QB would be starting. Any and every NFL coach would and does the same thing. You don't need to blame Mangini just because you don't understand procedure or feel that you were left in the dark.

agreed. Reid and his medical staff should get in trouble for reinserting Kolb and Bradley with concussions (NFL has stated several times thats a no-no)

Mangini only hurt our chances for a win...and it is likely something that comes up in his performance review with Holmgren at the end of the year.

because its against NFL rules to lie about a player's injury status. They described him as day-to-day even when they knew he had the sprain. He should have been "out."

Same thing with Brett Favre... don't you remember when the NFL was going to go after Mengini for that one?

impossible to prove he was not day-to-day. initial swelling makes a diagnosis incomplete at best and by the time the swelling went down later in the week maybe they thought he could play.

the favre thing was a different story when they did not reveal he had an injury while he was playing despite the fact that he did.

bottom line: they revealed this injury and the severity is up to the discretion of the medical staff. unless one of them goes to the NFL and says Mangini lied, then there is nothing they can do.

Just a clue here.........It's not the media he's playing cat and mouse with, it's our upcoming oponents. If the team you're playing, or teams you will be playing in the next few weeks have no idea who your QB is, it makes it tougher for them to game plan against your O.

Seneca and Jakes skill sets are different....ie.....Seneca has much better feet and you must game plan for that.

Gini doesn't give a flying flip about the media. The media has zero to do with it. It's all about keeping info from our oponents. It's a very smart thing to do.

I seriously thought most everyone understood that. My bad.....

Seems a lot more logical than dancing with the media doesn't it?

Now there's a mental picture for you.

Monday's at 8:00. The new ABC series "Dancing With reporters". Where we team up NFL head coaches with their perspective local sports writers in a dance competition. Reality TV at it's very BEST!

lmao

I'm so sick of this QB Carousel...it's a complete joke...

All Cleveland has ever needed is a little bit of Luck. Let's hope he comes in April.

Maybe I didn't make my point as well as I thought.

When I said that he is dancing with the media, I meant just that. They ask the extent of an injury, and he dances. Hence the "dancing with the media" comment. The REASON he would do that, is to theoretically cause the opposition to have to prepare for two schemes - a tactic that has been ridiculously ineffective.

But yeah, I understand who exactly Mangini is trying to fool. I just don't think it works. And I don't agree that everyone does it. The good teams don't have to.

Thanks for your clue, bud.

I'm not up to speed on the complete details of the Farve issue, but I seriously doubt that was some type of "dictatorial" decision, not with the other personalities involved. Not to say he wasn't compliant, but I do doubt he was the only one involved in making the poor decision. However in this case, I do believe there is a chance for Jake to be activated, at some point, should the ankle show marked improvement. I also believe Mangini is in full compliance with league reporting policy on this particular injury.

Do you watch his pressers? He's as straight forward as he possibly can be. If he doesn't want to comment on something he says so. He'll provide a political answer when he needs to, (like when asked about Braylon's DUI,) and he'll defer to medical decision and allude to progress when asked about injury, but it's basically the same answer: they want to be sure they're doing it right, and would rather err on the side of caution. There's nothing wrong with that, it's the truth, and all the media really needs to know. When the player makes it onto the practice field, or is reactivated, then they'll be informed and so will we. It's not a game, it's just the way it's done.

So why is Tom Brady listed as probable on the injury report with a shoulder injury every single week for the past however many years?

Well, that's pretty dumb and ineffective as well because not a single person that watches football believes it. It's quite ridiculous actually.

And I agree with reddog. But only because when we try to "fool" the opposition they don't really care because they don't care who plays for us. When all you got is a bunch of scrubs, it doesn't really matter. Other teams are just laughing at us. "Oh no ... is it Delhomme or Wallace?" I'm sure that's keeping the Ravens up at night.

The players might be laughing, whatever, but I guarantee the coaches aren't taking it lightly. Any coach at the professional level who takes his opponents lightly, especially in a division game and when his own team is playing poorly, isn't going to be coaching that team for very long. We as fans can look at it and say "this team doesn't stand a chance" but Baltimore's coaching staff is preparing for this game as if the season were on the line, even though they're going up against the lowly Cleveland Browns.

just put the washed up bum on the IR already and throw Colt into the wolves, might as well see if we can ruin another QB's future, thats what you get Colt for winning so many games in college, a promising career squashed when it was announced that he was selected by the cleveland browns and sentenced to the worst team that a QB could end up and your succesfull college win record will forever be tarnished. Sorry Colt but we eat QB's around here like a fat kid eats cake.
