I'm not as specific as most of you are. My definition of a #1 wide receiver is a guy who will consistently draw attention and make plays.

Being the best receiver on a team and being a actual # 1 are two different things.

You are exactly right. It does take two to tango.
That's the thing about football. There are so many variables. You can have a great QB and a great #1 WR, but if they're behind a lousy OL who can't pass protect they're both ineffective, they don't get the numbers or the respect.
I'd say a #1 WR is one who has all the tangibles and intangibles you look for on draft day and is coupled with a team possessing enough talent in the trenches and at the other skill positions that he and the QB can do what they do at a high level.
In football it's never an individual thing. Like you say, Jerry Rice had Joe freaking Montana and Steve freaking Young. Harrison had Peyton freaking Manning.
On the other hand, those QB's had those receivers too.
It's probably unorthodox and maybe even a bit off to say, but any receiver on our roster could be a #1 if he can get open and catch the ball being thrown by a QB who can spot him open and get the ball to him.

The point is you can say that about any position.
I have always held that the #1 receiver is the guy the QB just threw the ball towards.

My definition of a "true" #1 WR would be if he'd be the primary receiver on at least half the teams in the league. The only WR we have that would even be allowed to read that list would be Stuckey. Of course, after he read the list we'd have to kill him.......

Speaking of wide receivers, I wonder how Carlton Mitchell is progressing, and I wonder if he and Colt have shown any chemistry in practice.
I only bring Mitchell up because our present WRs can't get deep and rarely (i.e. Robiskie and MassQ) catch passes. Either that or our QBs are too scared to go there.
Point is, anybody else wondering about Mitchell?

I've definitely been wondering about Mitchell. Young and raw, true, but he may be the only one with the skill set to be (eventually) a true #1.
He was inactive last week, I think. Haven't read anything about him since pre-season.

From what i saw of Mitchell in the preseaosn he looked pretty good for a young kid..he seemed to have the talent to be a decent WR..i just wonder if maybe he just needs more time to develop his route running and such..maybe he can contribute next year?

From the reports I remember reading (posted in this forum) he seemed to be a VERY hot/cold receiver. On good days, he'd show his speed as well as making nice grabs (which shows a good set of hands), and run some nice routes. Other days, he wouldn't do anything right.
Sounds like he needs more time. I sure wouldn't mind throwing him out there a little to get his feet wet. I assume that throwing a rookie WR out there isn't the same as doing the same with a QB, right?
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I don't know Shep, Mitchell and McCoy have probably been playing catch everyday in practice. They should be used to each other and have their timing down. I say play him. In fact, I say play the entire 2nd team since Colt is used to all of them.

Stucky is the guy who McCoy supposedly throws to quite a bit to during the week, it'll be interesting to see what kinda of rythm they may be able to establish this Sunday.

Since i have not seen one in Cleveland since Webster Slaughter it is hard to define. Edwards had the chances but mr. butterfingers consistently was too inconsistent as a wr to merit being a #1. Our denial of the obvious declared our WRS were NFL raedy and we pursued no One to help the Worst WR corp in the NFL. While the ravens wisely spent only a #2 for a #1 wr, we sat on our hands. But we did lie to ourselves that a QB in professional freefall was ready to once again to be a top signal caller as the guy throw two horrible picks that were good for 2 TDs in 2 games.
Our most Consistent WR( Cribbs) gets about 2 or three passes a GAME thrown to him. Even if we had a #1 WR our OC is a journeyman as a play caller and makes NO GAME DAY adjustments. WE have been seriously outcoached every game.
