Maybe its just me, but it seems that ball doesnt come out till Ward hits him. And if thats the case there shouldnt even be a fine for that hit.

I thought that for a while too, but there are some stills in the thread that show a glob of ball (hidden by Sheldon Brown's background) that indicate the ball was out before The Nuclear Explosive Device was detonated.

If you watch the video posted earlier in this thread, when they do a close up it's a bit hard to see but the ball is actually bouncing off the ground when Ward hits him.
I think he's going to get fined, and I'll be glad when they do so we can move past this.
IMHO It was an illegal hit that cost us 4 points.... do I think it was dirty? No... I think he was going for a big hit to dislodge the ball... can I see it being a bit late? Maybe... do I really wish he was just a little lower on his body? Heck yes!
Overall I really like Ward... the penalty in the end did not hurt us too badly and I want him to keep playing hard.

it was definitely late,
If by late you mean a tenth of a second after the ball hit his hands, then you're right. Other than that, the timing was a thing a beauty. Had it been a catch, and his helmet hadn't collapsed into Ward's, they'd have ended up kicking a FG.

You know, I've thought about that -- for two seconds -- the situation would have been the same,...Keep the ball away from Cincy to prevent the tying score. Only diff is, that score would have had to have been a TD.

I thought that too - until I looked, and relooked, and looked again at the stills in the forum - game day I think? Something like "hit didn't look that bad"........you can read it, look at the video, then look at the stills - I had egg on my face, and admitted it.

Of course this is going to look bad when you play it in super slow-mo. It's going to look like he hit him two seconds after the ball hit the ground. Even when you look at it in slo-mo, there is some question as to whether it was actually a blow to the head. When you watch it at full speed, he did arrive slightly late, but I don't think he could stop himself. Ward made a quick break on the ball and the ball came loose a split-second before he hit Shipley. Was a penalty warranted? I would say so, but the hit didn't appear to have malicious intent. I compare it more to an accidental face mask.

I think it's one of the worst I've seen in awhile. I think it's the exact hit that the NFL is trying to get out of the game. There's no intent to tackle. There's just a lead with the shoulder to the head and helmet-to-helmet hit and it's after the ball has gone by. I don't consider it late, but it's the exact act you don't want in the game.
Did this guy not see the Lions/Browns preseason game?
If Ward gets anything worse than Suh's fine, I'm calling BS (though I fully expect it).
As I said before, the thing that makes me mad about the hit is that it cost us points. I don't have an issue with the hit itself. I'm glad Shipley is ok, don't get me wrong....
Good post '79, I feel exactly the same way.

Echo that I'm glad that Shipley's OK.
I'll also echo that the fact that we finally have a dude patroling the backfield that will scare the hell out of WRs, that will cause even the slightest drop in concentration because they may be wondering "ooh, is that crazy bastage near me." I love this guy. We haven't had this since Mr. E. Turner.
And if he knocks Hines Ward's teeth out, I'll pay the damn fine myself.

Look, guys, it WAS a penalty. It was a late hit to the head. If the Refs are paying attention they'll call it every time. It cost us 4 points that in the end didn't matter.
But some day they might. That's what he needs to remember.

Timing is everything. It would seem Mr. Wards was just a wee bit off. Oh well, it didn't cost us the game but it could have, I suppose. I'm sure that lesson isn't lost on him. And he still has the fine to consider. The only reason I'm upset about the hit is because I really didn't want to see something like that cost us the game. It didn't. Oh, and I wish he'd have hit him like that earlier in the game to take away one of Palmer's targets.

Thanks for the link I gotta say this, it looked like a shoulder to the head but it didn't look intentional.. looked like any other play... I'm not sure this is as big a deal as some make it out to be... But Damn,, that boy can hit.. whew.,., we've been waiting for a guy like that since Eric Turner....

It appears that little tap is going to cost Ward $15K. NFL hits Browns T.J. Ward with $15,000 fine Published: Wednesday, October 06, 2010 Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jordan Shipley loses a pass in the end zone as he is hit by Cleveland Browns safety T.J. Ward (43) in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, in Cleveland. Ward was called for a personal foul and the Bengals went on to score in their 23-20 loss to the Browns. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan) BEREA (AP) — Cleveland Browns rookie safety T.J. Ward has been fined by the NFL for his hard hit on Cincinnati wide receiver Jordan Shipley. Ward would not say how much he was fined, but a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the league assessed him a $15,000 penalty for the hit on Shipley in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak about the fine. An NFL spokesman said he was not aware that Ward had been fined. Ward struck Shipley after an incomplete pass in the closing minutes of Cleveland's 23-20 win. Shipley sustained a concussion. Ward said he was not trying to hurt Shipley. web page

He get's $15k....and Suh gets $5k. Ya, that's fair.
Of course, a positions coach just got fined $40k for flipping the bird at a ref. That's a bit excessive.

That was a preseason fine, I suppose they aren't worth as much as the regular fine.

I think that particular fine for Suh should have been much higher, as it was obviously intentional. It's easy enough to see that while it turned out to be illegal, there was no intention of Ward to decapitate Shipley. There is no other way you can put what Suh did to Delhomme.

I love the "Leading with the Helmet" line...
My head is attached to my shoulder via my neck, So I'm pretty sure, if I lead with my shoulder, my head will follow, and lets add to that a large Orange plastic battering ram I have place over my dome, and you have TJ Ward, "Leading with the Helmet"
What's the over/under on how long till we have the NTFL? (That's National Touch Football League for those not in the know)
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I'm not in the league either and I think Pereia is cheap shoting Ward. I'm glad he's not in the league. He should stick to Fox and Friends. They say a lot of stupid stuff there. Lets fine Ward 1 MMMMillion dollars! Better yet, fine him, kick him out of he league and burn his uniform. Please... this was a bang bang (no pun intended) play with no malice. He should get the same fine Suh got.

Can't believe this crap. There is a clear double standard in this league. Baffling how Suh's hit on Delhomme can land a 7k fine, while Ward's hit on Shipley lands him 15k. How does intent not factor into this at all? Suh was clearly trying to hurt Delhomme, while Ward was making a play ON THE BALL. Just does not make sense at all.

Suh's fine was only $5k, not $7k.
The difference is that Suh is a Top 10 pick in this year's draft and Ward was a 2nd rounder. Suh is a "star", Ward is not (yet). The media glossed over Suh's attack, yet feigned outrage at Ward's... so the NFL follows suit.

In fact, NFLN ran footage of Suh's felonious assault on Delhomme over and over again on a segment for the Lions called "Restoring the Roar."

Oops, my bad. But still, the same thinking follows.
I agree though, it's just so blatant that it is aggravating. I know you have to earn respect as a franchise through competing but how is it that the league sees fit to apply punishment's to like-infractions so differently? If Haden had laid this hit would he have got a 5k fine as well? Im not sure. I know it's probably an ill-founded sentiment, but sometimes I feel like people ... all over the Brownies because it's fun for them, be it the national media or the league, or whomever. I can wait to be competitive, and I can wait to build, but if there is one thing I am sick of it is being viewed with a lack of respect.

If you actually read what I said you would know what I meant. I meant that there was no malicious intent behind it, he was simply trying to dislodge the ball. It's not like the hit came two seconds after the play was over. Did it warrant a penalty? Probably. The ref never did specify though if it was for a blow to the helmet or hitting a defenseless receiver. If I remember correctly, all they called was a personal foul. Anyone else remember this?

Looking at the pictures on the Enquirer site it appears Ward didn't move at all, he was planted and ready to deliver the hit. If Ward has as much time to alter his play as people say...wouldn't Shipley have not run right into a stationary person?

He wasn't stationary, but he also wasn't moving very fast... but he didn't need to be.
Either way, the point stands that there just was not time for anyone to pull up between the ball dropping and the hit happening.
And the NFL Commish is a freaking joke and a half for fining Ward at the level he did.
