Just clicking

I wonder how many receivers are going to hear footsteps when Ward is near them?

I wonder how many $ Ward will see when he nears them?

I don't know if he'll care....

I hope he doesn't care.. and just does like Gini wants him to. Play within the rules.

Ehh, when's the last time someone got a concussion from an accidental face mask?

The fact that he got a concussion shouldn't have a thing to do with it, unless you're going to start penalizing players for injuring players, something that naturally happens in the course of a football game and season.

The penalties and fines have to be based on infractions of the rules, nothing more and nothing less. Unfortunately, though, they're based on star power and that's it.

Absolutely crazy that Suh gets 5 grand for trying to rip Jakes head off- he committed 2 or 3 different penalties all at the same time. And Ward gets three times that amount for a split second reaction play.

Glad we get the bengals again. Ward can try and knock off 85.

pretty sure tj's quote after the game was "i would do it again"

love it. maybe slightly better timing and you won't get flagged.

The hit wasn't a cheap shot", Periera is missing on this one.
I can understand the flag in this day and age, but it was a collision that was a split-second in timing from being a non-penalty.
Ward can't back off, & I don't think he will.

Exactly what I was going to say. They probably wouldn't say so or not, but I'm hoping that was the case.

Along the same lines, a smarter thing to say is along the lines of, "I should've hit him a little lower, but I'll keep hitting guys hard."

I dunno.

just Clickin,
Man, this whole board is amazing to me. We have watched years of sorry tackling, non-hitting, no repercussion Browns Defensive players line up and play tag with opponents and WE FINALLY have someone that wants to hit.. and Browns fans are debating hitting. PLEASE...

Those Browns fans who are complaining must not have seen Felix Wright, Dixon and Minnefield play. One time, they knocked out C. Collinsworth, in Cincinnati, stood over him and barked!! Man, please, if that hit would have been laid by T.Polamalu, everyone would have been praising the hit!!! If you look at the pattern that was run, it led the receiver RIGHT TO WARD. Hell, if the receiver catches the ball, most people would have been questioning why he didn't hit him!

Like the players say, this is a collision sport, not a contact sport. And next time, the rest of the Browns should SMACK Carson Palmer for coming into Wards face and saying anything!

I didn't know that.

But you know what? That's almost irrelevant. We knew before the Ward hit and fine that Suh's was BS.

Can't believe this crap. There is a clear double standard in this league. Baffling how Suh's hit on Delhomme can land a 7k fine, while Ward's hit on Shipley lands him 15k. How does intent not factor into this at all? Suh was clearly trying to hurt Delhomme, while Ward was making a play ON THE BALL. Just does not make sense at all.

Suh's fine was only $5k, not $7k.

The difference is that Suh is a Top 10 pick in this year's draft and Ward was a 2nd rounder. Suh is a "star", Ward is not (yet).
The media glossed over Suh's attack, yet feigned outrage at Ward's... so the NFL follows suit.

every article i found says the fine was $7500

T.O Is running his mouth now.

Browns coach Eric Mangini defended Ward, saying it was an aggressive play -- nothing more.

Owens countered with a personal shot at Mangini.

"Look who it's coming from," Owens told Bengals teammate Chad Ochocinco in an interview on Versus in advance of the premiere of the "The T.Ocho Show." "Probably 90 percent of his players don't like him [Mangini] anyway. "I don't like him. We got to see him again anyway, so we'll see who's going to do some cheap shots next game.

"Hit me like that."

j/c .... I saw some of the comments on the ESPN board. Best one was:

If I was Ward, I'd hand the Commish $60,000 and say, "This is for the next 5!" ... then hand him a box of tampons.

T.O. just started something and has opened up Pandora's box for all the safeties in the league.

He is talking about how players don't like Mangini....

T.O. You have split up locker rooms single handedly. Players don't like YOU!!!

I think what is being debated is whether the hit was late or not. and I doubt anyone on here wants Ward to tone it down... so I'd say,, you got us wrong..

I just sent a nice long letter to Roger Goodell on how I personally feel. The double standard..and anything else that came to mind..The Suh fine in comparison, the fumble of Jerome Harrison earlier in the year that wasn't overturned..etc. feel free to do the same.

Not for nothing Loyal, but the one guy I keep in contact with at the NFL headquarters has an email that ends with @nfl.com

I'm wondering if you are even sending email to the Real Roger Goodell?

Hmmm Daman..that's a good question. Can anyone clarify a Roger Goodell E-mail address? I also asked if TO was going to get a fine for talking about who is going to get cheap shotted next time and commented on that tool Mike Perria or whatever his name is and his comment that TJ Ward needs to be hit hard.. I hope it went to the right place..

I can't think of a way to find it off hand.. But you could try this

http://www.nfl.com/contact-us

I'll email the guy I'm in contact with and ask if he knows of an address.. I doubt he'll give me Goodells of course, but perhaps there is an email to lodge complaints.. I wouldn't hold out much hope for that being a great place to send things too..

EDIT:

I sent my contact at the NFL an email requesting info,, don't hold our breath on this one.. My guess is he'll tell me to go to the website and use the Contact Us method which I've listed above.....

We'll see

Wow,, how bout that.. he responded to me.. this is what my contact wrote in respone to my request for contact info.

Quote:

Rick,

Unnecessary roughness was correctly called on that hit. Ward made helmet-to-helmet contact with a defenseless receiver, a clear violation of our playing rules.

You may distribute the following email address to your friends: your.comments@nfl.com.

As for Mike Pereira’s comments, he’s no longer an NFL employee. Those feelings should be shared with FOX.

and then of course he signed it with his name which I don't feel comfortable revealing in an open forum..

If anyone questions that I received this from an official of the NFL, I'd be happy to send it to the private email of Purp or GM or someone else for thier verification....

FYI, this is the same guy that gave me the info on Minority Hiring for the League (rooney rule) that's posted in the info section of this site.

How much would he be in the know in terms of this situation or is this just his opinion and he happens to work for the NFL? I ask because it would be interesting to see if the NFL defined this as helmet to helmet contact. Sure their helmets might have grazed each other but to me it was clearly shoulder to helmet.

Even if they do define it as h-t-h, it doesn't mean it was malicious intent. Adrian Peterson is allowed to go h-t-h all the time.

To be perfectly honest,,, he's in the Public Relations department within the NFL so I"m sure that he's pushing the company line....Hey,, that's his job and I can't fault him for it...

My guess is that he isn't in on any decisions made regarding fines, penalties or any other on field issues....

But he's a good guy. Gets me info whenever I want it. He's the one that got me the internal memos on minority hiring (the rooney rule) and the rules on tampering. so he's helpful in that regard.., decent guy to know.

Ward delivers hard hits
By Matt Florjancic, ClevelandBrowns.com Staff Writer

Posted 17 hours ago

aaRookie safety T.J. Ward is not going to change his style of play, despite criticism from Sunday's hit on Bengals receiver Jordan Shipley.
In his first two games as a member of the Cleveland Browns, rookie safety T.J. Ward led the team in tackles. Through the first four games of the year, Ward has a team-best 32 total tackles and 24 solo stops, along with one pass break-up and a forced fumble.

He is tied with fellow rookie defensive back Joe Haden for second on the team with four special teams tackles.

Though he has made solid plays for the Browns since being drafted out of the University of Oregon, Ward gained the attention of officials and others with a hard hit on wide receiver Jordan Shipley in the team’s 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday. The hit was flagged for unnecessary roughness and knocked Shipley out of the game.

“I just want to everybody to know it wasn’t intentional or to knock him out or to get him hurt,” Ward told the media Wednesday. “It’s part of the game; I just reacted to what I saw.

“The way it happened, I didn’t really try to hit him with everything I had, but still, it was a pretty violent hit,” he added about what he saw on film. “I wasn’t trying to aim for his helmet. I just saw what I saw. It all happened so fast.”

Ward drew immediate criticism from the Bengals and others, but his teammate, Colt McCoy spoke in support of him. McCoy had an interesting perspective Sunday. He and Shipley were teammates and roommates at The University of Texas.

“I didn’t see anything wrong with it. It’s just football,” McCoy said. “Things like that are going to happen. Obviously, you don’t want anybody to get hurt, but it’s just how it played out. I don’t think T.J. knew the ball was already on the ground. He can’t see it from that angle and was trying to make a play. I thought it was a great play.

“Jordan knows; he’s played receiver his whole life,” added McCoy. “There’s a chance when you go across the middle that you’re going to have to take a big shot, a big lick and he got one.”

While Ward did not intend to knock Shipley out of the game, he also does not plan on taking anything away from his hard-hitting approach to the game.

“That’s been my M.O. (Modus Operandi) since college,” Ward said. “I’m known as a big hitter, but I’ve never been called a cheap shot throughout my four years in college. Now, I’m kind of getting labeled as a cheap player or a dirty player. It’s kind of surprising.

“It’s the nature of the game, so no, I’m not going to change the way I play. It’s instincts,” he concluded. “You can’t really stop doing what comes naturally.”

Good to see a Colt back Ward. It's not like BE turning on his own teammate the last time a Browns player knocked out a Bengal receiver.

I was thinkin the same thing.

I love that the whole team is backing Ward on this issue. Its been a hot button issue through the league and its great that the team is backing Ward and backing up the physical play. Its awesome. We want to play physical football and make people feel it. When we lose teams still feel it.

TO has really been runnin his mouth about it. even on the T.Ocho show, because he doesnt want to get hit like that. Saying that maybe he'll cheap shot us next time we see em. Yea right.

I'm glad we're under Cincy and T.O.'s skin...This is the way to be. Toughness. Thatll be us...thats how you survive in the AFC North. Thats how you win in December and January

Barring injury, I think this kid's a gem.

I've been watching this team for too long to get caught up in the play of a few games or even a season ... but I like what I've seen from Haden and Ward.

Ordering a Ward jersey tonight. I love this kid.

It's nice to finally have a player on defense that isn't afraid to hit people.
