They thought enough of him to have him on the roster.

As good as Minnesotas d-line is if he was able to stay on the active roster that says something IMO.
Gonna have to dig a little deeper on this guy.

I guess Minnesota kept 10 D-Linemen to start the season.

Lets bring some young blood to the d-line.. I like it..
I'd rather do things like this with our late round picks and trade for guys w/ experience, than draft guys like Melila Purcell, Chase Pittman, Paul Hubbard, Don Carey, and Clifton Geathers who never do anything, let along get cut.
Keep doing this FO!! Keep doign this!!

Hopeful depth? web page The Cleveland Browns added depth to their defensive line Tuesday by acquiring Jayme Mitchell from the Minnesota Vikings, league sources told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora. The Browns sent a late-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft to the Vikings in return for the fifth-year pro out of Mississippi. Mitchell, 26, played in 23 games over his first two seasons with Minnesota before a preseason knee injury wiped out his 2008 campaign. Mitchell appeared in five games for the Vikings in 2009, including the NFC title game against the New Orleans Saints. He has one sack in two games this season.

opinions from the other side on the trade: Quote:
We said all pre-season that the Vikings have an insane amount of depth on the defensive line, and that they should probably try to trade some of it away for help at other spots. Well, the Vikings are doing that now, but the help they're getting isn't immediate.
Per the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Vikings have shipped defensive end Jayme Mitchell to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a "late-round 2012 draft pick."
Mitchell joined the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi in 2006. He had only one tackle this season so far, a sack that came in the season opener.
I wish we could have gotten something more for Mitchell, but it is what it is. Better than letting someone that talented walk away without any compensation at all.
Best of luck to Jayme Mitchell in Cleveland!

I'm wondering if we're looking at him as a DE or if we're considering standing him up at OLB as a pass rusher.... almost certainly he'll be just situational for now, at best.

Can't argue the agressiveness for depth here,...just always concerned when we take a guy with an injury history.
Welcome aboard Jayme,...'Come help us out !

Great job! Kudos to Dong. Saying he has "talent" and trading him is odd. Hope he is more like Roth or Hillis. Rather see our late rounders go and get experience. No guarantee, but we are working it. Now a WR? Or another corneredback?

i wondered the same thing as he's a little light for a 3-4 end but this guy isn't that much smaller than brian schaefering (about 10 lbs lighter) so he might be DE depth. then again, he's also only about 10 lbs heavier than matt roth, who is a beast at OLB.

I'm not sure where he projects the best- would say DE at first and then see if he can transition out if need be.
The vikes defensive line is loaded. Of the ten guys on the roster, those ten guys probably could have started elsewhere. I am kind of surprised that a late 2012 pick is all the vikes got for Mitchell- and its an excellent pickup for the browns wherever he ends up playing.
These are the kinds of trades that help build a team. Instead of late round junk, it makes sense to add players with skill that have actually played in the NFL. If he statys healthy, he will be a real solid addition.

If we made a trade, then Heckert must like some thing he sees in him.[Bubba Baker] He probably saw some pass rush abilities and one of the things this team is lacking is the ability for one of our DE's who can rush along side Rogers......here's a thought. How about Rogers and Rubin together in a 2 DT look to collapse the pocket for our edge rushers. We have shown this look on occassion, but I can't recall seeing both our NT's pass rushing as a pair.

Maybe it's for that conditional pick we're getting for Quinn. So we got a ham sandwich and potato salad.

I haven't seen anything about who we cut, but if I had to guess, either one of our extra OL or TE would seen an obvious choice.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Could be Titus Brown though... they've already cast him off once. Might be Mitchell hoping to send him to PS.
OTOH... they could be planning on trading somebody else (J. Harrison or S. Rogers) for a pick or picks.

NO, they see something more... granted, the pick is a far into the future pick, but you still don't give up picks for "just a body".

If he contributes as much as some of the guys we picked up mid season last year (specifically Roth and Moore...?)
Those two guys were for different reasons obviously ... but think about it. This guy HAS had game experience and has been a starter ... not a seasoned vet but definately not a rookie. If he is excited to be "wanted" and comes to Cleveland ready to go... all he needs is a few good practices and Mangini will give him some field reps ... if he can sack drew brees he can either sack anyone we put him against or at least take some heat off of bernard roth and rogers.
We dont need a front 7 of 7 studs ... we need a few studs (which I hope we fix in the draft) and then 4 or 5 other guys who are good and if you only single team or try to chip with a te or rb they will make you pay... thats how we become dangerous and make teams think we are coming from everywhere.

O.k maybe I'm being too hard.. If he has anything it would be more speed on the edge, and possibly they got something back from the Geathers pick, which turned out to be nothing.

Cleveland Browns trade for Vikings defensive lineman is official BEREA -- The Browns confirmed they acquired defensive end Jayme Mitchell from Minnesota for an undisclosed draft choice in 2012. Mitchell, 6-6 and 285 pounds, was signed by the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi in 2006. In 29 NFL games, he had five sacks and one forced fumble. One of the sacks came in the Vikings' 2010 season-opener at New Orleans. The Browns have been shorthanded on the defensive line all season because of injuries. They seldom have fielded more than two defensive linemen on passing downs. To make room for Mitchell, the Browns waived defensive back Derrick Roberson. Link

I don't think that matters. I would rather have a pass rush specialist than a CB that won't see the field.

They actually consider Ventron a CB, so four. However he can play both corner and safety (which I think is/was his original position when brought in).
I like the trade, we need some youth on the DL, with Rogers, Coleman, and Robaire all 30+, adding a vet, albeit not a often used one, means he has more tread on his tires hopefully and can stick around for a few years.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

Couple of things to consider...
-I agree with the poster who said that they see something they like or can develop....I agree. Minnesota has a loaded line and this guy seems more like 3-4 end then a 4-3 DT or DE -Perhaps this opens up the possibility of the Browns trading Rogers. Not sure I like it, but we all know the future isn't in the next 1-2 years and Rogers may not have much left after that

Its worth a thought (and maybe just that) purp ...
I mean .. if Belicheck trades moss for a third rounder with the idea that they get SOMETHING out of him ...
1. The plan may already be in the offseason to bring in at LEAST a stud dlineman whether FA or via the draft. 2. The coaches may be noticing that Rogers is aging and if he could be done in a year or two .. maybe we would at least think about trading him. 3. If they evaluate the rest of the dline to play well enough as when Rogers is unable to play ...
I mean its not something I would like to do especially because we aren't out of it yet ... its not like we are 0-8 or 1-10 .. but it could be nice to get something out of him if he were to retire in a year or so anyway. Im just not convinced at this time that we do have enough dline depth.

I would cringe (and probably weep like a baby) if I saw Ventrone at CB.
I think that you meant Adams. Adams has started at CB for us and pays both S and CB in our defense.
As far as trading for Mitchell .... we've had 3 DL banged up. Rogers has missed a game, Coleman has missed a couple, and Smith has been banged up as well.
They saw a chance to grab a guy off of a roster that is pretty heavy with talent at DL, so they did. I think it could be a good move. Mitchell appears to have some speed and good burst off the edge ..... so hopefully he'll develop into a solid player for us.
