This team is still playing hard and giving us chances to win, honestly, what more can you ask right now. This team is obviously moving in the right direction.
The defense is..yet you seem to be dodging that point. The offense has scored in the first half of all the games and failed to produce in the second half when they needed to.. The offensive line is struggling more than they should be. Analize all that if you really dare to.
U really haven't given me much specifics on where they're improved..I just see a general statement...playing hard..sorry I've seen bad teams play hard many times.
Not sure why I'd have to dodge the D success,...last I checked that's still part of Mangini's team. There's no point in going there with you because you're not going to give Mangini any credit for the D, only the blame for the O struggles. We'll have to wait for the injuries to start piling up on D until you start blaming him for that .....Kinda like when I said if Jake is healthy we're probably not having this discussion anyways.
I can't really explain the 2nd half collapses for the O so far, I wish I could, but if you want to point the finger at Mangini as being a terrible coach for that you might as well give him credit for the first half successes on O and the 60 minutes of solid play by the D then as well. I'll stick with the young coach who's 3/4 of the way there right now going into his second year.
What exactly do you want for specifics on improvement? swagger,attitude,toughness,camaraderie,...at this point while we're still needing talent on this team those are pretty good traits to build off of.
Attack, I'm not this huge Mangini fan, I just think he needs more time to prove himself and he has made this team better since his arrival. Do you really want to set this team back again with yet ANOTHER coaching change?

Mangini did more with RAC's team than RAC could ever do. RAC put teams out on the field that looked unprepared, unmotivated and lacked discipline. Watching a RAC team was probably the most difficult thing for me to stomach in all my years of being a Browns fan.
Are you counting last season when Mangini took RAC's team, along with the changes he made for improvement, to a 1-11 record. Are you saying RAC's team was the most difficult thing for you to stomach in all your years of being a Browns fan next only to the team Mangini ran out there last season?
I'm sure that's what you meant.
Me? The 3-13 season was the worst I remember.
I'm talking about RAC's last year, it was more than dreadful. The 1-11 start was still not as bad, at least you saw a team moving(albeit slowly) in the right direction and it did pay off in the end for Mangini.

Here are the facts as I see them:
1. Harrison is a UFA at the end of the season. 2. We drafted Hardesty to fill his role. 3. We hit on Hillis. 4. There are SB contending teams that are very thin at RB and may pay for a one year rental.
Bottom line, I have no problem trading him.
It's lame to quote yourself but it saves time here. See above plus...
IMO Harrison was mentally done with this team. We had the opportunity to swap him out with someone who wanted to play. We were not going to resign him. I see this as getting something in a bad situation.
And I'm ok with this trade.
Bingo.

J/C mainly, but to all those complaining about this trade and how we got taken the only thing I can't understand is : How our front office could make this decision without consulting with all of you? I personally hated when they traded Winslow and had a party when they traded Edwards, but who am I to say what we could or should of got for them.I wasn't sitting around by the phone waiting for them to call and ask my opinion. As some have already said. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe they shopped around before making this trade. Question: Who on here knew what we got when Denver gave us Hillis? I would wager '0'

I'm going to chuckle when Mike Bell isn't on the 45-man roster come Sunday.
Why?

Because of the tendency of people around here to overvalue incoming players and devalue former players. To hear some talk about it, Mike Bell is a bruising, smashmouth power back just like Peyton Hillis, who only needed a fresh start with a team.
Reality is that is on his third "fresh start" in 3 years, including being unable to hack it on the practice squad for the Houston Texans when they were mired in mediocrity.

just clickin' Daman,
some people don't like this trade because they don't think the team turned over enough stones and move to quickly.
but someone posted in this thread that Adam Schefter (sp?) said this trade had been at least two weeks in the making but it had stalled out. If you don't think the FO made pleanty of inquiries with other teams within that two week period. your nuts. that doesn't even count before said stall. nothing says Phili was our first choice as trade partner on this.
Bottom line is Harrisons value is what it is. and there are teams out there that could use a RB so it's not that the market is dry.
JMHV
Edit P.S.
Usually once people see this point of view they follow up wth then we should just have kept JH for the season. He is the better back....blah blah blah. . But these will be the same people that when JH walks after the season ( and he was as good as gone), would have cried that we should have traded him and gotten SOMETHING instead of nothing.
Remember people. Most thought Denver hosed us in the Quinn trade too.

And you can call me one of those people if you want ...
But I will give a little chuckle for you if he is in the game for anything more than the "victory" formation when we are kneeing it at the end of the game (see Jerome's productivity versus the Bengals) ....
As a side note ... if you aren't productive in a game versus the Bengals ... you might get traded ... See Harrison and Braylon

It, apparently, just won't be here with the Browns. Sorry, Cal, just read this story this morning in local paper about trade. Needs to produce when he lands, I guess. But Daboll has some part of this. Never used him like he might have, and I think he is above average as a back IMO.

Actually, your comments about Bell aren't entirely accurate.
Last season he played a pretty fair amount for the eventual Super Bowl champions. While Reggie Bush was running for an amazing 390 yards, Mike Bell ran for 654 yards. He was the 2nd leading rusher on that team, roughly 140 yards behind Pierre Thomas. The Saints ranked #7 in rushing last year. Drew Brees was sacked a total of 20 times last season, with backs often helping pick up blitzes.
The Saints have had injuries galore at RB this year. They are second last in the NFL in rushing @ 75 yards/game. Brees has already been sacked 8 times in only 5 games. Bear in mind that they have played San Francisco, Carolina, and Arizona as 3 of their 2st 5 opponents. Hardly defensive powerhouses there.
I'm not going to claim that Bell was the key to the Saints success last year, but he was part of it. The Eagles thought highly enough of him to sign him to an offer sheet as a RFA. It's not like he was some bum on the street and the Eagles signed him to a veteran minimum contract. They signed him to about the same money we signed Harrison to.
I bet that the Saints wish they had him back right about now.
Now .... I don't want this to be construed as me saying that the guy was THE key to the Saints winning the Super Bowl, or that I think that he'll be a superstar here ..... but I do think that he will be a competent addition to the RB corps, and will do things well, if not spectacularly.

I want a Csonka and Kiick (?) pair. Ought to be, on paper offensive running opportunities beyond just Vickers sets and the ever-rarer WildElf Cribbs to the middle. Look for more injuries if we don't get outside more than we do where a JH can move in space. Myopic offense; Mack's right cheek or his left. Decisions, decisions.

Not sure why I'd have to dodge the D success,...last I checked that's still part of Mangini's team. We'll have to wait for the injuries to start piling up on D until you start blaming him for that .....Kinda like when I said if Jake is healthy we're probably not having this discussion anyways.
Yeah ,sure,I'll blame him for injuries..my point is I asked U to show me where there is improvement.I pointed out the defense. The fact that the offense hasn't really improved much should open your eyes.
U have to take it in the whole equation..U can't say 'Wow offense put up 14 points in the first half..GREAT JOB Eric!!!"..then watch the offense collapse and then say :''I have no clue where to look at".. It's obvious where to look..players and coaches.. Are the players executing when the game gets tighter? Are the coaches putting the players in the best possible position to win? Are they utilizing the players skills to their advantage?
It's no on both fronts..and I've seen some terrible execution and equally terrible play calling ..
What exactly do you want for specifics on improvement? swagger,attitude,toughness,camaraderie,...at this point while we're still needing talent on this team those are pretty good traits to build off of.
Eficiency..being able to produce points and get a lead/maintain a lead when needed. See U can 't tell me how much improved on offense they are..I pointed out only 2 things that were a improvement..the rest continues to show how clueless the staff is regarding the offensive side of the ball..the only thing they really know how to do is scheme a running game.
The Browns offensive efficiency, which comes from a lack of execution and continued mistakes are a wide-spread issue, not just a fourth quarter problem. The Browns defense has played well enough to keep them in games, the inability of the offense as a whole has been disheartening.
Do you really want to set this team back again with yet ANOTHER coaching change?
I'll put this very direct..I've seen enough of Mangini.I've seen way too much of Daboll..dude is over his head and Mangini can't help him because he doesn't know offense. If the Browns don't get better he's gone and it won't be as much of a setback as U think. The offense has to be upgrade in four areas so any turnover in those positions will propel the team forward. And getting a experienced OC will do wonders for this anemic team.
Oh and BTW for those of U (Peen) thinking that Heckert was alone and made this trade on his own are fooling yourselves..Mangini had some imput on this. But from what I heard this was brewing for a few weeks. Now I'm not bashing him..but the writing was on the wall the moment they jumped to take Hardesty..Harrison was disgruntled but also has issues..fumbles..injuries..etc..they want a power running game.. I haven't seen enough of Bell but I would figure he gets 8-10 carries a game.. I think this is another in a list of players (think tendered one year guys) who'll get moved at some point..

Not sure if Harrison was "mentally spent" as some have claimed. But looking at how the coaching staff treated him in the last year would anyone blame him for being more than slightly pissed?
I also don't believe that all a team's backs have to be the same style of RB. Hillis is a bruiser so we have to trade the back who is more of a speed/finesse guy? Bullpucky......The OC just didn't have the brains to use him properly.
The trend on here has ALWAYS been to call a player a diamond in the rough when he's on our roster and a turd as soon as he leaves. That doesn't make it the truth.
It may turn out differently (and I hope it does) but on it's face we got bitch-slapped in this deal.

I'm betting your right about that. and also, no matter whether you think Harrison was good or bad... somehow, he didn't seem to fit into the plans here.
So if you gotta chance to get a guy you think can be of more help to you,, why wouldn't you make that trade...
I"m not saying Bell is better than harrison..we'll see I guess...Just saying the powers that be must think that Bell fits here better than harrison..
Bell
http://www.nfl.com/players/mikebell/profile?id=BEL512977
Harrison
http://www.nfl.com/players/mikebell/profile?id=BEL512977
Same number of years, within 3 in rushing yards, both have a little history with injuries, Harrison seems to receive more... but he's probably been thrown too more as well..
Bell is 3 inchs taller and 20 lbs heavier...
I don't know folks,, looks like we traded almost identical players.....at least in terms of past production...
FYI< this was in the Plain Dealer this morning.. not sure if it's been posted yet. Seems as if Harrison is Puzzled by the trade..

This part starts makin me think ...
Our Free Agents as of the end of this season:
Wallace Bell Vickers Stuckey Steptoe (If he is even technically with us still?) Smith (TE) Womack Smith (DE) Jackson Roth Bernard Mitchell Gocong Trusnik Wright Elam Sorenson Dawson Zastudil
(As reported and listed by http://walterfootball.com/freeagentscontractscle.php)
I think it would be accurate considering they already have mike bell listed with our team.
But ... we might have some holes to fill after this season ... and if we are going to lose some of these guys anyway ... why not identify who we want to re-sign .. and trade the others (if we can get something for them?)

No Im not I stated what I stated about his fumbles...it is what is is
however we trade a guy who "Has his jersey in the Hall of Fame" he broke records..for a guy that has done NOTHING in his career....this guy couldn't even hack it on the Texans Practice squad..
From what "I" have seen of Bell..his running style to me looks like it will lead to fumbles and it has...Harrison really only started fumbling the ball this year....Bell has a different story with that IMO
however, I doubt guy even makes our roster next year,...we would have been better off with a 7th and brining Jennings back..yes I would take Jennings over this guy..
I have said my part, it is what it is...I see Bell as a guy more prone to fumble then Harrison...thats how I see it...thats all
regardless...we got jobbed..we gave up a guy with his Jersey in the Hall of Fame for a guy who has done nothing in his career...Jerome had some talent...failure of this coaching staff to motivate him or make him feel wanted tells me this is an epic fail on the part of Mangini and Co.

Steptoe is in the UFL. He has 2 catches for 26 yards through 3 games. Yeehaw.
Ironically enough, his team appears to be #1 in the league in passing with Josh McCown at QB. Besides Steptoe, the Hartford team also appears to have former Browns Taurus Jackson, Issac Sowells, and Gerard Lawson on it. Man their website sucks! lol

Well you were correct in what you stated about fumbles ... I just said I think you were misleading others ... harrison and bell have basically the same fumbling percentage is what I said *(at least very close)
And yes .. we did trade a guy with his Jersey in the Hall of fame. Heres an example that comes to mind though ... David Tyree had an amazing catch to help win the superbowl ... he had one great game and will forever be remembered. You know what happened after that? He was cut by the Giants and shortly thereafter retired because he couldn't find work.
I will never say that Harrison is a bum. But as much as you were talking about Bell not being able to stay with a team ... Harrison couldn't stay healthy enough to unseat Jamal twinkle toes Lewis .. and when Jamal retired and Harrison should have been the heir apparent ... the team trades for a back and trades picks to move up and select another ...
If we were completely healthy at running back ... harrison would be the 3rd option at best (who's to say Davis doesnt impress the coaches and become the feature 3rd down back?)
And why would you take Jennings over this guy? Jennings is out of work which means that 32 teams passed on him... Including us. With Bell, we might be wrong but we at least know the Eagles liked him well enough to give him a contract. Yes they dumped him .. but in their mind Harrison fits better in their offense.

Last I heard, Veikune had a try out for the Dolphins and Titans.
I didn't see anything about how it went.

I'm not too happy with this trade, but I could see Harrison wasn't getting it done, and wasn't ahppy, and most likely would not return next year.
I'll give Bell a chance.
BUT with that said, the folks that are complaining about Bells fumble history need to look at Hillis and his 3 fumbles already this year. So it doesn't help your argument to praise one, then argue a point on the other that can be used against either.
Hillis 3/2 76 carries (5 games) Bell 3/2 188 carries (18 games)(goes back to last year)
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

it's no wonder-they simply didnt use him-Ever - other than when they had to (see 286 yds Browns rushing record last year). Why? No one knows besides Mangini, which is odd since he basically saved Mangini's job, dont ya think? I'm not ready to say it quite yet, but that hints at an ego problem with Mangini. The which was the rap on him before...hope thats not true...
BUT i saw the way Harrison played during the last game-he CLEARLY did not want to be here anymore. Cant blame him, but the smarter thing to do would have been to showcase himself.

One other aspect to this trade to think about.....
Now it is absolutely nothing to bank on....BUT....don't forget about how Hardesty fits into the picture....If Hardesty can come back similar in form to how Jamal Lewis did from tearing both ACL's.....WOW a Hardesty/Hillis combination looks like it could be devastating....so Harrison was probably on his way out anyway.
I don't see us losing much by getting Bell (if at all). We may even gain. Just as the Eagles may gain in getting Harrison. In the end I think both players are better fitted to the offenses they are now on. And both get a chance to make a fresh start and make fresh impressions. Bell is known as a hard and tough runner which is what Mangini wants.
The worst case scenario is that he is gone after this year because Davis beats him out. OK.....well Harrison was probably gone after this year anyway so that is a wash on the worst case scenario......The Best case scenario is that we have a 3 headed sledge hammer next year to throw at opponenets in the guise of Hardesty, Hillis, and Bell. I can see a lot of knees buckling when they come to make the tackle after 3 quarters of trying to stop 3 different freight trains...
So all in all I think the trade works....blockbuster???? not by a longshot...did either side come out a loser.....Not necessarily. Somewhere along the line, I think people got it in their head that the only good trade is the trade where you were able to rape the other side in the deal. I think that is preposterous. Sometimes a fair deal is a good deal...This may turn out to be exactly that.
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

I dont know what everyone was expecting as far as how much we can get for a running back who has shown flashes of talent (and thats it) ...
Since the league has been transformed into a mostly back-by-committee league .. A team doesn't "need" a back (unless he's a feature back guy like APeterson, CJohnson, LTomlinson a few years ago even) ... In fact ... I looked at the draft history from the last few years ... and because the "need" for running backs has been diminished, it is eye opening to look and see where some of the popular starters today were drafted. I didnt count this years draft because its still too early ... but take a look.
2009 1st Round : Knowshon Moreno, Donald Brown, Beanie Wells 2nd Lesean McCoy 3rd Shonn Greene 5th Javon Ringer 6th James Davis (just for reference lol) 6th Bernard Scott
2008 1st Darren McFadden, Jonathan Stewart, Felix Jones, Rashard Mendenhall, Chris Johnson ... (Pretty good first roung actually) 2nd Matt Forte, Ray Rice 3rd Kevin Smith, Steve Slaton, Jamaal Charles 4th Tashard Choice, Ryan Torrain 5th Tim Hightower ... Great year for RB's I guess
2007 APeterson M.Lynch in the 1st Chris Henry, Brian Leonard, Brandon Jackson 2nd Michael Bush, Leron McClain 4th Jason Snelling, Ahmad Bradshaw 7th
2006 Reggie Bush, Lawrence Maroney, DeAngelo Williams, Joseph Addai 1st Lendale White, MJones Drew 2nd Jerious Norwood 3rd Leon Washington 4th Jerome Harrison 5th Lawrence Vickers 6th
2005 Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Cadillac Williams 1st Frank Gore 3rd Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs, Darren Sproles 4th
... I mean take it for what you want ... but why would a team be willing to part with a 5th if they trust their scouts .. especially when they COULD have a guy like Tim Hightower, Ahmad Bradshaw, Lawrence Vickers ... (or any other guy in any other position) ...
And also .. for every person that is claiming "That 6th or 7th isn't worthless... because what if we want it to make a trade to get OUR GUY..."
I completely agree with you ... and I bet the Eagles did too .. and maybe thats why they DIDNT trade us a 7th ..
"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things."

Oh and BTW for those of U (Peen) thinking that Heckert was alone and made this trade on his own are fooling yourselves..Mangini had some imput on this.
Sure he did. I'll bet Holmgren did as well.
I say Heckert because he is the GM. He is the guy who makes the phone calls to talk trades.

whether or not ball is a top player, let me know where chaun thompson, beau bell, martin rucker, travis wilson, paul hubbard, and leon williams are. people thought we lost majorly when rucker went to the eagles and what now? he's out of a job. don't be surprised if you saw the last of harrison after this year.
when you boil down to it, for whatever reason, harrison has been inefficient. whether getting bell was because harrison has been moping or because we have a different philosphy than last year, it doesn't even matter. people prop up bell out of hope, not because people think he's all-world. he obviously isn't but we can hope he better fits our system than the one in philly, something both sides have said.

I would expect that the main person to benefit from this is James Davis.
He's got to be #2 on the depth chart if healthy this week, right? And if he isn't that'll tell us how the coaching staff feels about Davis.

And that could be a big reason why Harrison was shipped.
I could be that Davis had gone ahead of Harrison on the depth chart and the team decided to make the move for a trade while Harrison still maintained some value.

Jerome Harrison
Week 5 (ATL) 1 6 6 6.0 1.0 0 0 0 0.0 N/A N/A - - 0 0 0
When the guy got his chance, with Hillis hurt, maybe when we need the "Dash" of the "Smash and Dash" as some were hoping for... That's what he puts up?
Everyone wants to look back to last year and see what Harrison did in what, 5 games?
Like someone said, David Tyree's Helmet and Jersey are probably in the Hall of Fame to, that doesn't make you a HOF running back...
Even Romeo, the ultimate players coach, wanted more effort out of Harrison before he'd play him...
It's a what have you done for me lately league, and as of October 10th, Harrison lately had a 1.0 YPC...
I'm not trying to bash the guy, I thank him for what he did for a few games last year...
But if people are going to say he "Saved Mangini's Job" that's just rediculous, If anyone saved Mangini's job, it's guys like Matt Roth and Marcus Benard (Guys Mangini brought in mind you) who sacked Big Ben 8 times and got our first win against Pitt in forever (With Chris Jennings and Josh Cribbs, not Jerome Harrison, running the ball)
And I mean, Adam Shefter reports that this trade was almost made two weeks ago, and now gets made, so OBVIOUSLY that means Heckert just sat by the phone the ENTIRE time and waited for Philly to call back... NO WAY did he call anyone else...
Green Bay didn't wanna give a 4th for Lynch a 1st round RB, what would we have gotten for Harrison?
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I would expect that the main person to benefit from this is James Davis. I would normally think so,but I'm not sure..Davis is continuing to get dinged up and may be out as well. Depends on how this plays out.

I agree that for whatever reason, he just could not get it going this year.
Two different coaches could not get this guy to be a regular performer, whatever his potential. IMO its related to effort or attitude.
He's gone now and we have Mike Bell. Let's go Bell!

Davis is not on the injury list as of right now.

Quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace were two of the 14 players the Browns listed on Wednesday’s injury report, as opposed to just one for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the opponent for this Sunday’s game at Heinz Field.
Of the 14 players, 11 did not participate in practice and three were limited.
Defensive linemen Kenyon Coleman, Shaun Rogers and Robaire Smith, running back Peyton Hillis, offensive linemen Alex Mack, John St. Clair and Floyd Womack, tight end Robert Royal and defensive back Nick Sorensen joined Delhomme and Wallace on the sidelines.
Offensive lineman Joe Thomas, defensive back Abram Elam and wide receiver Joshua Cribbs were limited during Wednesday’s practice session.

Sorry.
When you said "dinged up and out of the lineup" I assumed that you meant injured.

Meet Mike Bell Oct 14th, 2010 @ 12:34 pm by Steve Doerschuk The Browns’ new running back, seemed fresh and ready to go. We asked Mike Bell why he didn’t feel shellshocked. “Can’t be,” he said like a fighter who pretended like that right cross to the chin only made him tougher. “Can’t be.” We think you’d have been impressed with the way the 6-foot, 220-pound Bell presented himself this morning. • He hopes he has found a home. “This is like my fifth team in the last four years. I want to find a place to stay. I know God has a plan for my life. Everywhere I go has been a learning experience.” • You can tell he’s a pro who knows he must watch his words to an extent. “I was on a good football team. I’m on a good football team. A couple breaks here and there and we would be an undefeated team right now.” I think he meant the Browns and not the Eagles when he said “we.” • One of Bell’s teams was the Broncos, Peyton Hillis’ old team. “He’s an athlete. Great hands, smart player. We’re two different backs but we do the same thing. “I think I’m physical. I think he’s physical. I can really explain the difference. It’s more a thing you have to catch with your eye. Nothing against him. We’re just different.” • Bell seems eager to become a back who gets way more catches than he ever has. “Other places I’ve been, the only thing I was doing was running. It was easy to key on me. Once they saw me on the field, they could put eight guys in the box. Until I start catching balls or start doing other things, it’s always going to be like that.” • We mentioned that it was just several months ago when the confetti was falling after he got two carries for the Saints in a Super Bowl. “I never really did get to enjoy it. Nobody can ever take the fact away I did win a Super Bowl. It’s been a tough year for me just because I’ve been moving so much, but it’s still a blessing that I’m still in the NFL, on a good team.” • He jumped the the Eagles in free agency. Now … the trade. What happened? “Nothing happened. Shady (LeSean McCoy) was playing well. They were paying me a lot of money, and I was just sitting. The most logical thing was to give me an opportunity where the offense suits me best. Cleveland needed a more physical guy, so … it’s all good.” link
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism
