Anyone picking this up today? I probably wont be getting this until the weekend, but curious to hear some people's thoughts.Getting solid reviews what few sites I have looked at, not as great scores as Fallout 3.

I loved Fallout 3 so I defiantly want this but right now I don't have the funds. I also wanted to get the PS3 Move but the money I set aside I had to use on something else. It's been a rough month so far but I should be able to get it in a few weeks.

I'm getting it. Not getting it today. 100% trophies on FO3 including expansions, so, yeah... I'll probably get it.

want it, but i have spent too much on games recently. dead rising, 2k, medal of honor, and the preorder of black ops.
maybe christmas.
the other thing that angers me is that they will release a game of the year edition 8 months from now with all the extra stuff that you would usually have to pay for after paying 60 for the game. that sucks.
anyone who gets it, post your thoughts though, i'm curious. isn't bethesda off this game?

Yes, but it's using the same engine that Fallout 3 had. Also it is Obsidian that is making it and many of the people there are from Black Isle Studios which made Fallout 1 and 2. Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first Fallout game, they bought the rights when Black Isle went under.

I won't be getting it today, but I will definitely be getting it.
I still need to finish all of Fallout 3 + expansions, however.

I still have 2 DLCs to go as well, Mothership Zeta and Op Ak. I've been planning on getting to those too....

Yeah, I need to get my copy back from my brother. I beat F3 and got the Platinum Trophy for it. Then they came out with the expansions finally on the PS3 and I bought all five. I made it through 2-1/2 of them when my brother wanted to borrow it. I was playing another game at the time and going back to F3 every now and then so I let him. I should go and get that and finish it while I wait to get New Vegas.

Operation Anchorage was a new area. Basically you went into a machine and it was a simulation war game. I completed this expansion.
The Pitt was a new area as well. You took a railcar to what is left of Pittsburgh and had to fight a faction there. I completed this expansion.
Broken Steel extended the game to Level 30 and continued the mission beyond the original game. It also altered the original ending to match the next step in the missions. I believe there are a few new area's involved in the missions. I'm about half way through this expansion.
Point Lookout was a new area: You take a boat to an island/swamp area. I never started this so don't know much about it.
Mothership Zeta expansion adds more intrigue to the crashed spaceship you find in the northern part of the map. Before the expansion you find a dead alien and get a really great gun. After the expansion you enter the ship and you are taken aboard the Mothership and have to fight. Like Point Lookout I never started this one.

Point lookout really sucked imo. It could have been fun, but they make the local nemesis completely overpowered. Its a bunch of slack jawed yokel redneck characters, but they are nearly immune to damage for no reason other than to make it harder. Defending the mansion Tony Montana style with the Ghoul was a fun mission though. Overall you just end up burning up a whole lot of stimspacks and bullets for no good reason.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...

Point lookout and The Pitt were IMO easily the best expansions. Broken Steel doesn't add a whole lot but has a truly epic battle in it. Operation Anchorage I think was kind of weak. A nice big explosion but overall not worth the money. I didn't like Mothership Zeta. It started out cool, but there's no variation to the enemies and it just gets long.

Well, I had a good night at bowling last night and won some cash. Just purchased the game on my lunch hour. I'll give a review on how it is compared to F3.

I bought it soon as my gamestop let me know my preorder was in. Haven't played yet due to work, but I plan on not leaving the couch for quite a few hours today once I put it in.

If you like Fallout 3 then Fallout New Vegas is a must have. It feels just lik F3 but a whole new story. Just a few minor changes. For one the magazines don't increase your stats +1 permenatly (+2 with the perk). In FNV it will increase it by +10 for a period of time then wear off like the effects of some of the drugs.
Can't wait to play some more.

That's an inaccurate statement. There are magazines which as you said will give you a 10+ rating for a short period of time. However, there are still skill books to be found which permanently increase a skill.
My thoughts: 1) Play Hardcore mode if you played Fallout 3. Seriously its not that hard. If you build up your science and repair you can have a robot companion as soon as you visit Primm (2nd city you find). Between what you can carry and what you companion can carry you make up for ammo having weight. Also keep some water and food on you and when you see a bed sleep in it for an hour. I barely notice hardcore mode is on. The only thing that is hard is the fact you can't heal your broken limbs with stimpacks. -If you play hardcore carry 1-3 guns and ammo and then give the rest to your companion -Try not to hoard until you get a companion or two. You're allowed like one human/ghoul and one pet like robot. 2) The best part of New Vegas is looking down the "iron" sights. You can aim and hit stuff pretty easy and you don't have to be in VATS all the time. 3)The weapon mods are fun. So far I have had only one weapon mode go on a gun I use but the scope was fun. 4) You no longer have a percentage chance at a speech conversation so you can't keep reloading until you get it. You either have the skill or you don't. 5) I would bump up guns initially cause that's all you will find to begin with. As i progress I am finding more and more energy weapons and will probably switch to using them. 6) Be careful of killing the Legion early, I almost got in a spot where I couldn't do anything. I rescued some guys from the Legion so their faction dislike of me went through the roof. Then they sent out a Legion Hit Squad after me and it almost ended that save cause the hit squad was so much better equipped than I or my companion was. Lucky I am a hoarder(even on hardcore) and I took every drug (psycho, buffet, turbo..etc) I had and got lucky and survived. I would assume killing NCR early will have the same effect. My suggestion would be to skip that part until later (its a sub-quest) 7) Lots of bugs and glitches......Save OFTEN...I had my companions disappear with a crap ton of my loot.
If you really enjoyed Fallout 3 I think New Vegas is better because its like Fallout 3+ with the new features. However, watch out for bugs and glitches.
Go Browns!!

My Bad, I had only played the game for a few hours and all of the skill books I found did +10 for a duration of time and wore off so I assumed they all did that.

A patch was released for the PC version and I've heard the 360 patch was released this morning but I can't find an article claiming that. Just a comment on the article for the PC version patch.
Quote:
Reading the official PC forums for Fallout New Vegas right about now can be a little depressing. Frame rate plummets, game slowdowns, Steam install gaffes, crashes to desktop, sound dropouts, menu glitches, and at least one person with gender confusion woes.
The bad news is, that's the state the game was in when Bethesda released it. The good news? They've already upped a patch. And some more bad news: It's for the PC version only.
What's it fix? Bethesda says "quest and scripting issues," which means the engine hiccup remedies are still a-comin'.
Bethesda adds that it's "also working hard to make this update available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game as soon as possible."
Hey, at least they fixed the PS3's digital pre-order bonus issue. "Users should attempt to re-enter the codes to download their bonuses," writes Bethesda, adding that if the '80023156' error continues, you should hold off 24 hours before entering the code again.
If you want to take a stab at remedying "bugs" that might be resolvable without a patch, Geek Montage is compiling unverified "fixes," possibly worth a shot.

just clickin
great game, im at level 12 right now. Frankly Fallout 3 I never finished. The first two fallouts were very tongue in cheek and colorful, FO3 took itself too seriously IMO in many ways and was drab. New Vegas looks much brighter and just a more appealing place to play in :P

A co-worker wont stop talking about the game, he is really enjoying it. I am hoping to get it next week, but it may have to wait until the paycheck after as I just bought some hockey tickets.

I know the PS3 patch is out, actually it was out on Tuesday when I played all night. I actually started over and did hardcore mode. I'm actually farther in the game than I was before I started over and I feel I have a better built character as well. At first I was going to be a H2H fighter but now I'm a Ranged fighter. I enjoy it much more. I have my stats set for those abilities but my barter is pretty low.
I won't be able to play until tomorrow but I'm already having withdraws. I need my Fallout Fix.
I haven't had any major glitches...well in fact the only glitches I've had is some 2-4 second freezes every once in a while. I hope I don't have some of the issues others have had. But I save often to prepare for that.

If I was starting a new character this is what I would do:
Strength: 5 Perception: 5 Endurance: 5 Charisma: 1 Intelligence: 9 Agility: 7 Luck:8
Tag: Lockpick: Lot more locks than computers in New Vegas Repair: Love this skill keeps your gear good and jury rigging is amazing Speech/Sneak/Whichever weapon: Since you have low charisma your speech skill will start off low. Sneak if you like to sneak around a lot and Weapon skill if you want to do more damage early. I would only take the weapon tag if it were Guns because you won't find any sweet explosive or energy weapons until much later in the game.
Take the perks: -Small Frame (+1 Agility, but limbs break easier): Not that big of a deal to deal with. Just use stimpacks on no hardcore or save often. Only time I had problem with Limb breakage was with mines. -Whichever you wish: I would probably take 4 eyes or weapons shoot 20% faster -20% less accurate. Tons of perks are geared to improving your accuracy.
High intelligence will give you around 14-16 skill points per level to use, High agility will give you good skill in Guns early in the game when that's all you can find, and a lot of actions point for VATS. High Luck will improve all stats a little, make your casino life easier, and make critical hits more common. If you're worried by the low charisma points in your speech skill will make up for it. Most things are based on speech and not charisma.
Go Browns!!

You mean the addiction to various chems in the game or addiction that players have to various popular titles My character is pretty similar to Loki, Hi Intelligence/Speech/Science/LockPick and my gun quality is good. terrible with anything that doesnt fire a bullet or laser though. Not playing hardcore mode just trying to enjoy the story and have fun

Actually, yeah i meant the latter. I imagine the random chance and decay equation they probably use for the addiction to chems is probably pretty easy.
I haven't picked it up yet but when i do i def will play it hardcore. The one disappointment for me from the first one was that you become virtually indestructible. I maxed out small guns just about ASAP the first time through and just roasted folks. Eventually just stopped using VATS altogether (with the exception of the railway gun... sticking ghoul pieces to the wall was too awesome.) The second time through i focused on big guns right away. A lot more fun than scouring for .44 rounds for Lincoln's repeater.

Make a quality game with lasting value and boom, addiction.
I dont play WoW but thats the best example. To get through all the content and not 'fall behind' you have to commit yourself to several hours of time per week with your guild members. We're talking 3-5 days a week playing 2-3 hours a day. Thats hardcore. You can of course take it more casual but for some people the addiction and "high" of getting that next unique piece of loot or winning a raid shoots off adrenaline and endorphins just like anything in real life.

My Char I started with:
S:8 P:8 E:5 C:1 I:1 A:8 L:9
Skills: Guns, Sneak, Repair
Traits:Four eyes and Trigger Discipline
I'm pretty happy wth it, I could of had my Strength at 6 and added one to Charisma and Intellegence but I chose the higher Strength to carry more and I also carry a Melee weapon for close range if I didn't take the target down from a distance which also saves bullets. I've got the hot key set to switch easily between them.
I've been deadly with the Varmint Rifle so far. I've been able to sneak up, line up my shot (not in VATS) and boom head-shot.There have been a lot of NCRCF's that I've run in that use a Varmint Rifle and they have plenty of ammo and Rifles to use to repair.

Finally got around to picking this up this weekend. I wanted to finish all the DLC's for Fallout 3 first and I knew if I bought this I wouldn't. Played a few hours yesterday after the Browns game and so far I am liking it. Very similar to Fallout 3 (to be expected) experienced minor glitches (getting stuck in the ground and having to reload save point). My one gripe is the uniform changes, I was wearing a NCR friendly uniform, and fast traveled to the prision only to be lit up by the powder blue gang. Now if I had changed uniforms from where I fat traveled I would have been attacked by the NCR and not able to fast travel, but if I dont change uniforms I will be attacked when I land by the Powder Blue Gang. So you have to walk far enough away from NCR, hope there aren't any critters around, change then fast travel. Just a bit annoying if you ask me. Also sometimes you won't know whats on the other end so you have a to play a guessing game, just a bit weak.

I too am liking the Varmint Rifle, for many of the same reasons. Really liking the iron sights, that was a needed addition to the game.
Question: Is the Powder Blue gang the same as the Legion? I'm doing my first run through the game as an evil character and thus don't want to allign with the NCR.

No, the Legion is it's own faction. You find out more of them when you reach Nipton during the main quest titled "They went that way". It's really the first main quest once you leave Goodsprings.
Hope you still are liked in Goodsprings because Chet sells a very good scope for the Varmint Rifle.

Sadly, Chet is dead. I alligned with the gang and took over the town. Perhaps I can scavenge it from his shop.Good to know about the Powder Blues though, because they're getting on my nerves. I think I might take out the prison next.

Hmmm perhaps he is alive then, I know I killed the Doc, the bartenders so I figured he was gone as well. When I get home tonight, I'll have to check. Thanks for the tip.
