Hmmm perhaps he is alive then, I know I killed the Doc, the bartenders so I figured he was gone as well. When I get home tonight, I'll have to check. Thanks for the tip.
If he is dead I hope you can get that scope. It's pretty sweet. Also, in Primm there is a Robot companion called Ed-E. If you are a sniper type player this lets you know close by enemies a lot sooner. Later when you get to Novac there is a character named Boone that you can get to follow. With both Ed-E and Boone I haven't been touched while traveling the wasteland. I had to repair Ed-E with spare parts instead of Science/Repair. You can find everything you need in Novac and the REPCONN test site near Novac.
You will go to the REPCONN facility during the "Come Fly with me" Side quest so activate it from Manny in Novac before going there. It was a pretty decent side quest IMO.
BTW, interesting/amusing note, the reason Novac is named that is because it is built around an old motel and the No Vacancy sign only had No Vac remaining and the "acancy" part of the sign was gone or removed. I don't know why but I thought that was kind of cool idea they put in the game.

Check this out folks: Google Maps, New Vegas Atlas Just did some google searches ;P You can also see the intersection for the 188 trading post (Rt 95 and Rt 93). We should take a road trip to Vault 3, bring your varmint rifles in case fiends are afoot. Some notes from the real locales: Goodsprings has a Saloon that the game devs modelled pretty closely Primm has a roller coaster and a few casinos If you find any other landmarks that match, would be good to know

Well it won't be on the "Real Map" vs FNV map but the Novac Dinosaur is in reference to Cabazon, CA's Worlds Biggest Dinosaur Gift Shop. They have two Dinosaurs, the first one built was a Apatosaurus named Dinny and then in the 1980's they built a T-Rex named Mr. Rex. Dinny has a gift shop in his belly. The Fallout: New Vegas just has a T-Rex and he is called Dinky and he also has a "gift" shop in his belly.

Tried to find the robot in Primm last night, but I didn't come across him, I plan on looking him up tonight when I get home. I played last night for about 1.5 hours and it felt like I didn't do anything. I did finally run into the Legion, I anticipated going more on their side, seems more fun. Reminds me of the Dark Botherhood from Oblivion.

He is broken on a counter in the Courier office. After you inspect him, do nothing and leave. Then speak to Johnson Nash, he will tell you if you an fix him he is yours.
You need either of the following: 65 Repair or 35 Repair with 55 Science or 3 scrap metals, 2 sensor modules and 1 scrap electronics
If you don't want to wait to level up; all of the repair parts can be stolen in Novac on the shelves outside the gas-station across from the motel. (This does give Negative Karma for each item taken)
Since you are going to be a bad character I don't think you will mind the negative Karma. Actually, I stole some of the items and I'm a good character and it didn't change my Karma level from good to neutral. I think I only stole (1) sensor module and the scrap electronics. I got the Scrap metal from REPCONN as well as another sensor module.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I shall be getting him up and running this evening. I may be close, I have been putting all of my exp points in Guns, Repair, Science and Lock Pick. With him, I shall have to find a better long range weapon.

Probably a good idea considering I basically spent $110 on Fallout 3 with all the DLC. I've been thinking about picking up the GOTY edition of Oblivion as when I borrowed the game from my friend the DLCs weren't out at the time.
This is the first new game I have bought since EA Skate 3 and I didn't want to wait, esp with winter/thanksgiving break looming. Fallout 3 is in my top 5 games of all time though, and I've been wanting to play this game since it came out.

Oh thats a crying shame my friend. The fact that the games ends at the end of the last quest without the DLC is ridiculous, and from what I understand, New Vegas is no different. I will proceed carefully through the game because of this.

youll get a popup screen when you go to do certain quests saying "if you do quest X here, you wont be able to go back" so if you arent ready to finish the game yet, just decline the option.

I've been having difficulty understanding the ammo and the different types of ammo/where to find it/how to load it into guns and so on. I remember in the first town the general store talking about ammo types but i can't seem to find a comprehensive guide online or even where to find something like hollow points. Anyone shed any light on this?

Workbenches let you make tons of various things like bombs, weapon repair kits, and convert EC ammo to MFC, etc.
You need certain points into repair and survival to activate it.
Ammo Reloading Stations let you build or breakdown ammo. Youll need lead, casings, primers, and powder.
Lead is easily attained by breaking down scrap metal. You can sometimes buy primer and powder from gun sellers. Casings you generate as you use guns
I dont build ammo often, But later in the game youll want ammo X thats rare like 50cal or 5mm for ammo Y like 9mm thats plentiful. You can then convert the powder and primers into 5mm casings.
Anytime I find a merchant I see if they have cases, their always free to take off them.
As far as normal ammo vs. hollowpoint or AP, hollowpoint does more damage but the enemies DT is "lowered" for that ammo meaning anyone with armor will deflect them. AP ammo does a slight reduction in damage but punches through higher DT.

Well I spent a long time yesterday trying to get to Ranger Station Foxtrot through the mountains, only to discover by waste of ammo and stimpaks that its impossible. Looks like the only way to get there is going ALL THE WAY AROUND by way of the road.
I found that I could get to Vegas through a military base monorail, but they tried to take my guns away before entering the strip so I declined. Is there a way to enter the strip with my weapons? Also is it just me or are there very few legion missions? I was excited and hoping to do more of their missions and go against the NCR because they reminded me of the Dark Brotherhood from Oblivion.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think the Fallout Games have the faction quests like Oblivion/Morrowind games. I did all the Faction quests in Oblivion before I even beat the game. The Dark Brotherhood was pretty sweet, especially getting the horse. But I haven't seen that type of thing in the Fallout Games. Probably because they were trying to make the game slightly different. They didn't want a futuristic Oblivion but a whole new universe.
As far as getting into the Strip, you can get in through Freeside. You will need at least 2000 in caps to show the robot guards that you're a legit high roller, you just need to show them you have the money, you get to keep it. When I went to the gate I had 125 in caps. But I had about (4) NCR $100bills. I went to a casino in Freeside (can't remember the name it was south then east at a street junction from the main gate to the strip, Atomic something.). I was able to trade (1) NCR $100 for $40 in chips. I then used the chips to play blackjack, roulette and slots. In about an hour (mostly because of slots) I had over 3000caps.
My strategy was to play 5chips in the slot and I hit a few 800 chip winning combo's (triple oranges). Once I got to 1000 chips I bet (just once) 200 chips on black/red/even/odd (which ever I was feeling) which is 1/1 odds. I won every time. I then cashed out into caps and started over with another NCR $100 into 40chips.
I only played blackjack enough to get the trophy/achievement and jumped back on the slots.
Inside the strip I had to turn in my guns when I entered the Tops casino during the main quest but the moment I walked out of the door I had my guns back.
Just a tip and ***SPOILER*** so don't read on if you don't want the info., if you can pick locks 50+ there is a safe in the Tops presidential suite that has guns. But there was (2) pool cues and I had two companions (Boone and ED-E), gave one cue to Boone and equipped the other one myself and took out the ambushing party pretty easily. Didn't waste any ammo.

Oh I always forget about NCR money. Good to know I can actually use it. I made it to freeside last night but turned the game off once I got there. I'm in no hurry to get to Vegas, so I may just bite the bullet and walk the long way around the mountains to finish up the radio station upgrade quest. I have about 8 open quests right now and I want to finsih some of those first before I go back to the main storyline. Since the game ends again (fail) once the main story is finished I dont want to be left waiting for a DLC to come out to finish the game like last time.

Let me clarify this a little, Fallout 3 didn't have any faction quests like Oblivion and from what I've played of Fallout New Vegas I don't expect them either. I have a book/strategy guide*** but I don't use it until I've beaten the game once. It is still wrapped in plastic or I'd check for you. You can always use "The Vault" which is a fallout Wiki and has probably (or will eventually) everything.
Fallout 1&2 were made by a different developer and when Bethseda bought the rights to the game they turned it into a NARPG like Oblivion/Morrowind but they didn't want to make the game exactly like them. It seems like the faction quests are an Elder Scrolls kind of thing.
They did have faction quests in Fallout 3, (and it looks like your farther along in NV with approaching the Legion faction than I am) but not like Oblivion/Morrowind.
***I know there are online resources (like "The Vault that I mentioned) that have the info for free but I like the books especially after I've beaten the game once and I know more about the game. The maps that it comes with are freaking awesome. Plus I can have a book in my living room while I play where as my PC in in my room and I don't feel like printing off a bunch of pages to find where all the snow globes/bobble heads ect are to get that Platinum Trophy.

If they had made it more balanced with the factions as in can do missions for either, thus making the game have better replayability I think it would have been awesome. I wanted to play the game going against the NCR and only doing Legion missions but that quickly came to be almost impossible as the Legion hardly have any quests and are barely in the game. If they had made the Legion more like the Dark Brotherhood I think the game would have been much better with more balance.

I was going to do my evil playthrough allied with the legion but decided it would be best if I merely served my interests only. If that benefited the legion or NCR so be it and ill do odd jobs i just want to be paid for my trouble :P so whereas in the first game id do alot of quests pro-bono i MUST be paid now

I just havent seen many legion missions. Only one is to collect dog tags. Perhaps I need to kill more NCR and then once I reach an amount of dogtags the missions open up?

Possible, but I think it's like the dog tags of the Brotherhood/ Prewar Books type of thing that Fallout 3 has. You earn cash and probably some fame that's about it.

Thats I thought when I talked to them. So have you come across many legion specific missions? I'm over 20 hours in and I haven't found a single one. Perhaps I'm in the wrong areas of the map?

I think you need to go to the strip and continue the main story a little farther. Don't want to spoil it too much for you but that is what you need to do.
If you want to know I'll tell you some more.

Considering I skip through the dialogue and dont think the story is very good at all, not sure you can ruin for me. Sorry this story is pretty cookie cutter IMO. Hard to ruin anything when I can see the ending coming a mile away.

OK, well once you're in the strip you can go a few different ways, first you're summoned to see Mr. House, you don't have to go if you don't want to. The other direction is to go directly to the Tops casino where Benny (the guy that shot you) is at. After you leave the Tops casino you will be force greeted by an ambassador to the Legion inviting you to have audience with their leader. At this time the "Render under Ceaser" quest is activated.

Ah I see, I've avoided going to the strip for the most part at this point as I've been trying to finish every quest before I go there.

I've gotten to the point of meeting with Ceasar of the Legion, yet I have to part ways with Boone to do so, can I recover Boone if I decide to talk to Cesar, and if so where do I get him back?

You can have him wait in vegas if you have met mr house, or send him back to novac where you met him.
Note though if you get in with caeser he will warn you not to do it again, and presumably wont rejoin you after that.

Hmmm, is there any other person you can get to join you that is as good as him? I met a ghoul on Black Mountain but doubt he'd be as much help in firefights.

Theres a girl you can get who has a killer melee attack and can let you craft items through her.
Another girl lets you drink as much as you want without the hangover, IMO not too useful but it does let you use beer as health packs because they usually dont have radiation.
Theres a doctor who while in your part you get 20% boost to anything that will improve your health (stims/sasparilla etc)
There are others, including a robot, a cybernetic canine and a super mutant.
Boone is indeed awesome, and to be honest if you wanna go the Legion route alot of your companions will complain a great deal about it. I'd say the second best NPC if your looking for combat is the girl with the power fist.

Ah yes, I ran into her as well, but declined. I'm torn here, I want to do the Legion quests, but seems like if I do I wont be able to have the companions I want, and it will ruin other quests for me making it impossible to finish them.

The way it is set up, if you want 100% trophies/achievements you are going to be playing the game a few times. I might be wrong but from what I can tell there is a branch in the story line and there is three/four paths you can take. Siding with the Legion is only one path, but there is a trophy for completing that path, as well as siding with Mr. House and another for siding with the NCR.
Where I am at and from what I can tell if I complete the Render under Caesar quest I will fail the House always wins quest is completed and so on with the NCR quests.
Just like Fallout 3 where you had to reach certain levels with different Karma (which people cheated on) they want you to play the game a few times.
So play it how you want this time and change it up next time.

If you want to go the Ceasar route (which I am doing now) my advice would be to grab Lily as a companion or Veronica although sooner or later you will have to do a quest for Ceasar that Veronica may leave you for doing. There may be alternate ways to complete it not sure. Being on Ceasar's side does limit your options as Boone is the best companion IMO, but it is fun and provides a bit of a challenge the NCR is almost everywhere it seems.
