Robaire Smith might be out for the year
The National Football Post
12 hours, 32 minutes ago

ShareretweetEmailPrintIt looks like Cleveland Browns veteran defensive end Robaire Smith's(notes) season is over.

Smith has a back injury that could land him on injured reserve, a possibility acknowledged by coach Eric Mangini in remarks distributed by the team.

"It's possible," said Mangin, adding that the back injury is lingering.

Smith, 32, has been with the Browns for three seasons.

According to the Associated Press, Smith's helmet is no longer in his locker.

I guess we get to see that new DE we traded for...

Report: Robaire Smith to be put on IR

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns defensive end Robaire Smith is done for the season, a person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of sensitivity to Smith's medical privacy. The person says Smith will be placed on injured reserve on Wednesday due to a back injury.

Smith, who played through bumps and bruises throughout his three-plus seasons with Cleveland, was inactive for Sunday's game in Pittsburgh.

On Monday, Browns coach Eric Mangini said Smith's injury could be long-term and that it was "possible" Smith would go on IR, joining starting linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, who tore a chest muscle and had surgery.

Smith's agent, Michael Harrison, said Smith will seek a second medical opinion.

That's a shame. If there a guy on this team who gives his all on each and every snap, and who busts his ass trying to get ready to play in each and every game, It's Robaire Smith.

Without Derailing this topic ... how many D Linemen do you guys think we are going to draft? Yes Rubin is developing ... but we are unsure about Jayme Mitchell (the guy we just traded for from minnesota who's only 26) .. And now we have Coleman (age 31), Rogers (who's 32 by the draft) and Robaire (who will be 33 halfway through November) ...

I did just start to notice Schaefering playin a little more the past few weeks it seems (possibly due to injuries) and also Robinson looked like he made a few plays ... didn't have the heart to review the pittsburgh game though again.

Point is .. it would look reeally nice to say that we spend at least a 2nd round pick (even a really high third .. which we should have) on a monster in the middle. Maybe a guy like Dareus or Austin who have gotten a lot of hype ... even heyward, clayborn, or quinn. I think that when we say since 2007 we have add a first round pick on a guy in the trenches every other year .. it may not be sexy but if we can control the line the rest of the game gets a little easier.

Two would be nice. Sort of how we addressed the safety position this year.

Get some stud in BPA in the first 3 rounds and get someone late who is sort of a project. We need youth there and right now its disappearing.

If possible, I would expect that we will sign or trade for one, then we will draft at least one.
Jayme Mitchell, I believe, will be slimmed down a little and be an OLB for us.

Aside from that, I would expect us to go WR Heavy in the offseason.

As for Robaire, his going on IR creates an opening on the Roster to bring aboard another WR in the event that Cribbs/MoMass are out (e.g. sign a kid from the PS).

That's a good point. I had kind of forgotten that our DL, outside of Rubin, was getting up there a little bit, at least our starters. And our backups don't have a ton of experience.

Feel bad for Robaire, though. Guy gave his all.

Bummer. One of our more consistent D-lineman. Not a world-beater, but a pretty reliable block-eater.

Sorry to learn of this. He was a solid player, a quiet warrior type who was ready. If he goes IR, does that let us sign a WR who can help us now. Our run D is weaker without him IMO. Just seemed like a real worker in camp and in games. I will miss watching this man. Or is this a wire replacement? I hope we get after DL beasts in the draft this year, maybe several in late second or mid-third. I really do not know next move(s). Hope he gets better soon.

the one good thing about DL is that they seem to have longer careers than some other positions.

I agree that we need to address this need early in the draft, no less than 3rd round and a high pick every year for at least the next three out of four years.

As others have stated a WR is certainly a definite need.

So much will be determined with Colt's development and our place in the draft.
We might win as few as 3 games this year.

That's weird. Pashos is the picture of health.

I guess this means we get to see what Lauvao can do, right?

I heard that James harrison ran up to him after the game and headbutted him in the shoulder... The league is looking into the situation and will probably assess additional fines ... but only because mack kicked the bar of soap.

Pashos is big because St. Clair has been inactive of late.

Maybe now we will see Lauvao at RG and Womack slids to RT.

Our Bye week can't come soon enough.

BTW, I liked the phase 'block eater' reeferring to Robaire.
That's a good way to describe him as any I think.

Schaefering has some big shoes to fill there, but I have been critical of Coleman and Smith, because they have showed little in the way of range and I think Robinson and Schaefering both made some nice stops on the edge last Sunday and not merely holding their gaps until help from our LBers arrived.

That to me was a good sign that our depth is producing like we need them to and continue to do so.

If we are drafting high again [most likely] in April, then I would think that if there is a stud DE when we pick.
There is I think a strong possibility we will take one.

Off subject, but.....

Also I don't care about the bad luck of us drafting a WR in the second round.

This is a new FO and plenty of other teams have hit on good players at that position in the draft.
WR should be a pretty deep position in the up coming draft.
Personally I would like to see the position addressed by bring in a proven veteran and also drafting a good prospect.

If we are drafting in the top 5, (if not a QB) then like I said a stud DE makes since.
This is not a deep position in the next draft imho.

Prp, I think you could be right about the guy we traded for.
I think that the motivation to make the trade, might have been that they saw him as an OLBer all along.

I hadn't forgotten but the issue is always going to be whats the more pressing need, or BPA available at the time of the selection?

Yamon Figurs if you all don't remember was drafted by the Ravens in the 3rd round 2007. Most recently with Oakland.

He is a return specialist mostly.

As it should be.

Imo, DL is second to only the QB position as far as positional value at the top of the draft.
We have our LT so that position is not in question.

As per usual it will come down to who is avalible.

If the top player on the board is a LT or a 4-3 DE.
Maybe there is a QB we don't feel good about drafting.....
Maybe we draft down and pick a WR later in the 1st and stock pile extra picks.

It's hard for me to believe that we would use a guy off the street over Lauvao.

Is Lauvao back from injury officially? I haven't checked on his status. I'd have to believe he would be in there if he was good-to-go.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Lauvao is still injured. No way he'd be sitting this weekend if healthy.

NFL.com

Lauvao was not on the injury report last week at all.

In week 5 he was listed as probable with full participation in practice.

In week 4 he was listed as questionable with limited participation.

In week 3 he was listed as out with no participation.

So it sounds like he is healthy.

Yamon Figurs has always been generating interest due to his Speed.

He ran an offical 4.30 40 Time at the NFL Combine in 2007, but he's only 5'11" and 185 lbs.

Doesn't seem like he's been able to stay with a team for very long. He's been in the league for 4 Years, and he has already been on his 5th Team.

That should tell you something right there. 4 years, 5 teams.

Give me a guy that runs a 4 flat 40, but has poor hands, can't run routes, etc........or give me a guy that runs a 4.8, sure handed, not injury prone, knows how to run routes, blocks, etc...........and I guarantee the slow guy gets the job.

That's what's wrong with the draft. Teams try to analyze the statistics - speed, quickness, strength, jumping ability - and too often they forget "hey, he's slow, can't jump, not the strongest guy - but he can flat out play".

I expect nothing from this guy.

as mentioned above, he's a return-specialist.

Cribbs is hurt, so we need a returner. Enter Figurs.

But he can catch a punt. Perhaps that's ALL he's here for.

And fwiw, i view this as more of an indictment on Stuckey's ability for catch a punt then a sign that Cribbs will be out this week. When you are gonna put JC in a position to get hit as much as we do, you best damn well have a reliable backup to catch kicks.
