I keep going back to the fact that I haven't seen anything in either of Colt's starts where I thought, "Wow, Jake or Seneca would have made that play." I just haven't seen it.

Neither me nor did I.

But I've seen several times a play go for naught and I've thought, "If Jake or Wallace were in we'd have likely done something different there."

Like a pick 6 that ends up costing the Browns a game maybe?

Something else- Since Colt is a new NFL QB, there is very little NFL film on him. The more he plays, the more that DCs can pick up on his rookie tendencies and exploit them. This is harder for a rookie to overcome than a veteran.

Browns' Wallace wants starting QB job back

BEREA — Seneca Wallace is getting closer, but closer to what?

As the Browns rev it back up after their bye week, Head Coach Eric Mangini keeps saying Wallace is “closer” than Jake Delhomme to returning from a high ankle sprain. Meanwhile, Mangini keeps avoiding the question of whether Wallace will reclaim the quarterback job from rookie Colt McCoy.

Two things are readily apparent about where Wallace stands.

One, he has come around to understanding it is best not to rock the boat.

“Right now,” he said in a diplomatic interview Monday, “Colt is leading the team, and we’ll see what happens as the season goes along.”

Two, if he were voting on who to play at quarterback, he would vote for Seneca Wallace.

Wallace came to Cleveland via trade — an undisclosed 2011 pick — not by choice. After arriving in March, though, he saw it as a marvelous chance to prove at long last he could be a winning NFL starter.

Browns President Mike Holmgren, who coached him for six years in Seattle, even gave this ringing endorsement:

“You’re gonna love Seneca Wallace.”

Wallace got his chance when Delhomme couldn’t answer the bell for Game 2, having mangled an ankle in the opener at Tampa Bay.

Wallace was 1-3 as the Browns’ starting quarterback after replacing Delhomme for Game 2. All three of the losses, though, were close games against teams that now have 5-2 records.

In those defeats:

• Wallace passed for 229 yards and had a 14-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter against Kansas City. The Chiefs drove 68 yards to a game-deciding field goal with 7:41 left.

• Using Peyton Hillis’ 144-yard rushing day, Wallace had the Browns in a 17-14 lead at Baltimore before the Ravens scored 10 points in the final 10 minutes.

• Wallace was driving and trying to build on a 7-6 lead late in the first half when Atlanta’s John Abraham sacked him. Wallace had a nice stats line going against Atlanta, 11-for-15 for 139 yards with a touchdown and a 124.0 passer rating.

The Abraham hit, however, changed everything.

Delhomme replaced Wallace in the second half in the coaching staff’s most dubious decision of 2010. Playing with a limp, Delhomme threw two interceptions and came away with a new injury while aggravating his high ankle sprain.

With neither Delhomme or Wallace available coming off the Atlanta game, the Browns are 1-1 with McCoy starting, and generally playing to strong reviews.

One can only guess what Wallace might have done against the Steelers and Saints.

Wallace only knows that a long-time dream seemed to be coming true. On Oct. 3, he led the Browns to a 23-20 win over the Bengals.

A week later, he had a 7-6 lead on Atlanta when he took over at his own 20 with 1:42 left in the first half after a blocked field goal. On first down, he threw a 19-yard strike to Chansi Stuckey. On second down, he fed Hillis for a 14-yard catch and run. Moments later, he got hit by Abraham.

At age 30, he was relegated to a fairly long injury rehab for the first time since he started playing football as a grade-school kid.

“To go down with the injury,” he said, “was devastating.”

Recognizing that this sounded a bit melodramatic, he adjusted that to, “It was hard on me.”

Yet, if he had stayed in and defeated Atlanta, the Browns would have been 2-3, and he might have been on the verge of making this his team.

“I felt like things were clicking,” he said. “We were moving the ball.”

It will be interesting to hear what Holmgren has to say today when he gives his first general press briefing of the season. Mangini said last week he will talk to Holmgren about where to go with the quarterback position, but he claimed he hasn’t done so yet because Delhomme and Wallace have yet to return to practice.

“I really feel when Seneca played, he played well,” Mangini said. “Since Colt’s been playing, he’s played well.”

Lapsing into murkiness, Mangini added, “Now it’s going to be a function of getting guys back to healthy, seeing where Colt continues to go.

“There is some ability now to go further in terms of rest if we need to with Seneca or Jake.”

Where does Mangini go if Delhomme and Wallace wake up one day in perfect health?

Stay tuned for Holmgren’s take on that one today.

As I said before, I think Wallace gives us the best opportunity to win.

I think Colt has performed admirably, which makes it that much harder to just yank him.

I'm glad I'm not in Mangini's shoes. Could be a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" type thing.

Against the Pats & Jets:

QB1 - Healthiest player not named Ratliff
QB2 - Next healthiest player not named Ratliff
QB3 - Ratliff
Inactive QB - Probably Delhomme from what we're hearing.

If Wallace heals before Delhomme, he should be starting. If we win a couple and Delhomme gets healthy, then I'd like to see him back in there. At this point in the season, there's no reason not to play the two guys that started the season ahead of McCoy, provided they're healthy. If neither Wallace or Delhomme are 100% this week, then McCoy should start, because neither of them are good enough to play effectively when they're hobbled. In reality I don't imagine that either is 100% yet. If we lose the next two games the scenario changes and we might as well let McCoy finish out the season. This is not a knock on him, but IMO, as long as we have a numeric chance of making the playoffs, we should play the healthiest guy with the most experience.

If neither Wallace or Delhomme are not 100% in the next two weeks, and Colt wins these next two games with solid play, then that's a whole different deal. It'd be tough to pull him because he'd be the guy with the rhythm and the chemistry, and a three game winning streak, and would obviously be a fan favorite. So much depends on Wallace's recovery this week. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Which is why I'm sure Wallace wants to rush himself back onto the field.. he realizes that with each game that Colt just plays decent, it makes it that much harder to justify going back to Wallace..

Colt doesn't have to go out and beat the Pats (assuming he still starts which is the vibe I'm getting based on the not needing to rush Jake or Wallace back comment)... all he has to do is play well.. look at it this way, if we can get to mid 300s in total yards, score about 20 points and not give the game away with turnovers, he will have done as well or better than Flacco, Rivers, and Favre have done in the last 3 weeks against the Patriots...

Wow... does that spin make you dizzy or what?!? LOL My most vivid memory of the Chiefs game was that gawd-awful pick-6 SW threw in the second quarter that gave KC their only TD on the day. He stared down his receiver, saw that he wasn't open, double-clutched and threw it there anyway. Ugh... I remember standing up and screaming "Nooo!!" as he threw it.

It was a real shame because the defense played really well that day. Certainly it wasn't all SW's fault, but we should have won that one. That was SO frustrating.

I think you have to keep McCoy in there, the kid is playing really well...he looks better then Wallace to me and McCoy is growing.

the fact that McCoy doesn't lock on to his receivers at all this early is very telling...he goes through his progressions pretty well, and he is improving every week and not looking to tuck and run as much.

also McCoy has shown much better accuracy then Jake or Seneca...

We have to let McCoy play...we need to gauge him and see if he is our guy..I personally think he is, but we need to let him play.....he needs this growth to have a chance to come in and start next year..he needs to grow.

I look for McCoy to play well against the Pats...He won't cost us the game, and in fact I think he will keep us in the game....for awhile anyways....

The way he played against the Steelers was telling...No rookie plays as well as he did against LeBeau..no rookie...the fact he followed it up with a good game managing game against NO was fine...He didn't have a lot of passing attempts and he had a few balls dropped to...

We need to stick with McCoy the rest of the way...the kid is a winner..the OL has rallied around the kid, the team has rallied around him..when the OL speaks about this kid the way they have he is the kid they want to play for....you have to keep playing McCoy...he won 1 game in two starts...how many games did it take the other two? Who knows we may be 3-4 or 4-4 if McCoy would have started the year....never know..I know McCoy doesn't throw the awful pick 6 against Tampa that cost us the game...we know that..

Colt has better decision making then the other two..that goes a long way....

Mangini's comments sound like he is laying the groundwork to wait until Wallace is absolutely 100%. Hopefully he has learned his lesson about playing injured QBs.

It also sounds like the decision time will come before the jets game, but not this week.

Colt will go into this game as a starter, against NE, at home, knowing his job is on the line, needing to play a very good game to remain the starter. As good a crucible as we get, IMO this game is one of our most important in a long time. I hope we will see "what we got."

If he does poorly, well, he wasn't ready. If he has a decent to good game, then maybe he needs more bench time, maybe he should start. But if he has a really good game, with this kind of pressure, then I say he just won the job.

Now we get to define the difference between "good" and "really good".

I sure hope thats what it's signaling.. I don't want Wallace or Delhomme out there until they are 100%.

it sounds to me like he is setting the stage for McCoy to have another good performance or two before the others are ready so he can justify leaving him in there...

He'll need a lot more than the 75yds passing he had last week in order to secure the starting spot, if we lose, even if he doesn't turn it over. We have yet to see the kid effectively move the ball with any consistency, drive and score. He really needs to step up his game to take away the starting spot from Wallace or Delhomme if they're healthy. Not saying he can't, just that I haven't seen it yet.

In part I agree,Wallace is my choice to start.
It wouldn't be hard for me to insert Seneca when he's ready, because the plan was not to play McCoy,so putting him back as the backup isn't going to discourage him,as he knows or he should know he's going to play again.
And later on I would play him in spot duty.

we could take a queue from Whisenhunt (Leinart/Warner) and Shanahan (McNabb/Grossman) and use Colt as our 2-minute QB.

I say this jokingly, but, at the same time, he could basically run the same offense that he played at Texas for the 2-minute drill.

agreed, in general...

...but he did run a pretty snappy-looking hurry-up against Pittsburgh that culminated in 6 points- so he can do it.

I agree that his performance will have to be looked at in the context of the game and what is being asked of him..

In fairness, we didn't need to do much with the passing game against the Saints .... so it's hard to criticize or critique McCoy's performance.

One that I can criticize is Robiske. He ran a route on a 3rd down play that he cut 2 yards short of the mark when he easily could have pushed past the 1st down sticks to make himself available for the pass. He caught the ball .... 2 yeards short .... punt.

I have a hard time believing that we run plays where the receiver runs a crossing route and is supposed to cut his route short of the 1st down marker against single coverage. These guys have to be aware of where the mark to make is and get there. Man that drives me crazy.

The most I've said about McCoy's performance against the Saints is that he did was was required to win.. no more and no less..

And I didn't notice that Robiskie play but that is troubling because "smarts" is supposed to be his strong suit right?

I saw the play and posted about it..it reminds me of the Kevin Johnson days when he wouldn't go beyond the marker but would stop short and get hit..
The play call was bad because Robo hasn't shown he can shake a tackle and get some YAC.

That play and another where he was overthrown by a little bit ...... and the DB in front of him jumped to full extension to try and intercept the ball ...... while Robiske just stood there really, really, really ticked me off. I swear that he looks completely disinterested in trying for any ball that might be out of reach ... but is close enough to make a try for. There have been several of those so far this year.

I am extremely disappointed in him so far. I truly hope that Mitchell or the guy we just picked up can take his spot away from him. Robiske isn't a game changer, and he isn't a "mose the sticks" guy either. If he's neither of these, I don't know what the hell he is.

This is to all that think someone other the Colt should start: JMO. the fact that a Veteran has not distanced himself from a Rookie with 2 starts says a lot. The fact that Wallace has thrown a few pick 6s and Colt has yet to do this, also says something.

JMO: We are not going to the PLAYOFFS : this is coming from a Guy that goes into every game believing the Browns will win, no matter who we are playing. But the fact that the AFC is too strong this year is just the FACT.

That being said: why not let Colt play now so he can get valuable game experience so he can start off as the starter next year and we might actually contend in this Division. I know this was not the plan at the beginning of the season (which I agreed with at the time)but things have changed since then. besides
JMHO: I think we will win just as many games with Colt as we will with Wallace

Who cares how many yard he threw for if we won.I suppose if he had throw for 400 yds 3TD 1pick 6 and lost, that would be better.Colt took what the coach gave him, competed what he needed too and Won.

I don't know about everybody else but I like when the QB drops back and you can feel comfortable the ball might actually go where the QB wants it to go.

PS. JAKE was left out of this discussion as I feel if he was healthy and all the other QBs had two broken legs I would rather the OL push them around in wheel chairs than have to see him again

Cleveland Browns President Mike Holmgren says time is nearing to decide on keeping Colt McCoy on the field
Published: Tuesday, November 02, 2010, 4:26 PM Updated: Tuesday, November 02, 2010, 4:42 PM
Tony Grossi, The Plain Dealer

Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer
Cleveland Browns' team president Mike Holmgren is keeping an eye on the progress of rookie quarterback Colt McCoy.

BEREA -- Browns President Mike Holmgren acknowledged Tuesday that he will have a discussion with coach Eric Mangini soon about playing rookie quarterback Colt McCoy over the long haul.

But it won't happen until veterans Jake Delhomme or Seneca Wallace are healthy enough to play, which doesn't seem to be the case this week.
"The obvious thing is: If you play the young quarterback, does the young quarterback give you the best chance to win? Or are you doing it just for the future? That's kind of crummy, if you're doing it just for the future. You want to win every game," he said.
Holmgren, however, acknowledged that solving the quarterback quandary is the most critical decision he will make as Browns president.
"I've gone on record saying the quarterback is the most important player on the team is the quarterback. You have to have that guy. So, I think it's a huge decision. I'm stating the obvious, I think," he said.

On other issues:

* Holmgren said he would evaluate Mangini and his coaching staff after the season to allow the emotions of the season to settle.

"Wins and losses is not the only criteria," Holmgren said. "The crummy part of our business is most of the time it's the main one. The most encouraging thing this year is we've been in most of the games. And had chances to win the game. It's also the most discouraging thing because we lost the games."

* Holmgren reiterated his commitment to leading a turnaround of the Browns' fortunes as president, but would not entirely rule out coaching the team.
"Absolutely (he's committed)," he said. "I made a promise and I'm going to stick with it. Now if I keep wearing a suit or not? We'll see."

that right there is almost like the Kiss of Death...Mangini your walking on think ice my friend..the Boss who is also a Hall of Fame Coach wants your job.

Why would Holmgren say something like this if he didn't intend to coach again? Face it..he has said Cleveland will be his last stop in the NFL..his last great adventure...where else is he going to coach? he isn't getting any younger

I still say its NOT a matter of if its merely a matter of WHEN Holmgren puts on the head set...he still has the fire in his belly to coach...he is gonna coach and this is good for us lol!

Personally, if Wallace is 100% (which is hard to believe, high ankle sprains take forever to heal), I'd probably want him back at this point. Colt has impressed me, but I like Seneca a lot.

Either way, they both remind me of each other, and I'd like to see them both on the team next year at this point....... I'd like to fix our RT and WR situation if possible, and I feel like if we have guys that can get open, Wallace will be more effective, and I hope McCoy will be too.

As long as they continue to play smart football, no stupid throws like Jake Delhomme in the first game when he threw that godawful interception (and proceeded to also get injured I think). Wallace is decent, and I think McCoy will be too, we just need to get a good RT and a WR or two that creates separation and catches the ball.

I mean, Montana had Rice, Favre had Antonio Freeman, Aikman had Irvin, Elway had Rod Smith, Ed McCaffery (I dunno his earlier WRs, I'm just not that old). Colt McCoy/Seneca Wallace have Chanci Stuckey as their top WR option. That's nowhere. I sure hope that MoMass, Robiskie, and Mitchell improve; but man, I'm hoping we go into next year with a real WR or have one that will become one in the future. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are guys who can do it with receivers that aren't that good, but most QBs can't.

I do enjoy watching these two QBs play, and I haven't found myself pissed off at them the way I would get at DA or Pretty Boy Quinn. "The Real" McCoy - Colt .45 (bang bang) and Seneca "The Tallest" Wallace have been a pleasure for me to watch so far this year. May be my expectations are low after watching Trent Dilfer, Charlie Frye, DA, and Quinn; but I do think these guys have potential to be starters for us for the next couple years (Seneca) or a long time to come (McCoy)

That statement says nothing 'new' at all and doesn't offer any insight either way as far as the future is concerned.

Obviously at this point we still have at least 9 games to play and that along with the games already played will be what this Coaching staff will be judged on.

At the moment if I had to [speculate] with what this team has shown to date.....I would have to think that this staff would be retained if the time to ask the question was now that is.

We haven't been blown out of any games to date and in every game, as MH said that's also the most discouraging thing, because of penalties and TO's. (Player mistakes)

With all the injuries we have had to over come and will be without some starters for the rest of the season.
Add to that some obvious holes at certain position.

I am not sure that the wins and losses do justice to the job of having the team prepared to do battle to go with the level of hustle they are exhibitting on the field.

This is in part do to having team first player types of players who were brought in to add to some core guys already here.

We are seeing an identity from this team.

Tough and smart and no
I am bigger than the team guys, because they are no longer here.

IMO,.....One that is befitting of both city and fans a like.

Maybe Mangini and the team fall on their faces in the second half of the season and thoughs of you whom are beating your drums can celebrate, but your celebration is premature and if the choice would have to be made today......well let's just say that you will have to continue beating your drums or get on the bus

I agree, purp. Holmgren should NOT be saying stuff like that. He's got to show more respect to his coach. That is disappointing to read.

The fact that Wallace has thrown a few pick 6s and Colt has yet to do this, also says something.

Again...when teams have film on him look for more rookie mistakes. I hiope not, but odds are it will happen.

And you can bet your ass Belichick is reviewing the film.

Well, good for Billy. I would expect nothing less from him. But his defense is not as bad ass as it used to be. The Steelers & Saints threw a lot at him, and he didn't back down. You can't discount that. It's the coach's job to not put McCoy in bad situations either. So far they have done a decent job of that.

I took that comment as him saying he doesn't like wearing an actual suit like he does in the owner's box, since you know that is what came before the quote.

I don't think someone with as much respect for coaching would disrespect a current coach like that, especially someone as genuine as Holmgren.

If he wants to coach the browns he need not beat around the bush about it. He would just fire him and take over.

He'll need a lot more than the 75yds passing he had last week in order to secure the starting spot, if we lose, even if he doesn't turn it over.

I agree that his performance will have to be looked at in the context of the game and what is being asked of him..

We have yet to see the kid effectively move the ball with any consistency, drive and score. He really needs to step up his game to take away the starting spot from Wallace or Delhomme if they're healthy.

No he doesn't, he just needs to keep doing what he's doing.

I don't believe that. I think that just managing the games doesn't guarantee him the job. I think, under normal circumstances, he'd need to continue to improve, stepping up his game to keep it. And I believe he'll definitely have to play better to beat the Pats. Having said that, our particular circumstances may effect the decision making in his favor.

First of all, it sounds to me like neither Wallace or Delhomme are going to be ready this week. Of course, that could change. It also sounds like Wallace is closer to seeing the field than Jake is. I get the impression that they'd like the vets back out there asap. I could be completely wrong, but I get the sense that they're not quite ready to turn the season over to the rookie just yet.

But as I said, circumstances could conspire in McCoy's favor. If he continues to win, it'll be tough to unseat him. If we lose a couple, then there's really no point in removing him. My thinking after listening to Holmgren is that it really depends on what our record is, and how fast one of the vets can get back onto the field. If one of them aren't starting this week or next, then Colt could end up finishing the season by default. He'll have to play very well in order to win, and that would make it extremely difficult to pull him even if both vets are healthy.

You have a point, we don't know if he is any more than a good game manager..

I have a feeling we are going to find out however

Not picking on your post per say just general comments.

Colt was a third round pick for a reason.
He was named our 3rd string QB for a reason.
I was all for drafting Colt and pimped it as such.

Here's the issue...............................

Most of us realised at the time he was drafted that he was a little bit of a project. Some thought he was a bigger project than others did, but we all pretty much realised he was a project to some degree.

I saw a lot of positives in Colt's play. A lot that can be built on from his play. But this FO "overprotected him" ( as I've heard it termed here ), for a reason. Because Colt isn't ready for prime time.

I think getting the kid's feet wet in a few games can be a very positive thing. But all this "starter talk" for a late third round pick many were so sure was a project to wanting him to start the rest of the season? Hold on there big fellas!???

If injuries dictate he start, that's one thing. But remember he will have to be "overprotected" for a while. So don't expect things not to have a few bumps along the way. It won't be smooth sailing week in and week out.

Hopefully it won't be needed to start him all year and it can be on the job training where he can sit, learn and grow from the experience that he has accumulated thus far.

Let the soup cook for a while before you serve it.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I really like Pit's take on this. He starts because of injury; he needs time to learn. Our best chance for wins in second half has to be a combination of healthiest, best skills, and experience. right now it is Colt while the other two get their feet under them (literally). If either is healthy, then Colt "cooks" some more.
This experience is vital. He has seen and survived two of the worst. The team plays for him. But no decision can be made about staying or starting until he shows game speed and skills. We have seen a few just get stupid out there. If he can't WIN, not just "manage" games (which can get overly used), then we need a franchise QB still and yet. But for this weekend: Good luck, Colt McBoy-o. Stick it in their eye!

well if they want an offense they might want to do this..

1) Draft AJ Green in the 1st round...

2) Draft Julio Jones in the 2nd round if he is there...

Can you talk about opening up the offense?

I don't know much about these guys you are recommending, but my 1st roound choice would be Greg Childs from Arkansas.

I don't think we are in need for a tight end. but if we are, I would like the people involved in the draft for Cleveland to take a look at D. J. Williams.

yeah,, maybe I didn't make it clear (I certainly didn't make it as clear as you just did) But I agree.

I was really hoping he'd be redshirted for a year... Just to learn and observe,, But that's just not how it worked out.

That is also why I've been sticking to "starter doesn't lose his job to injury" thought process... (didn't sound as if Holmgren totally agreed with that)

But I agree with your take Pit..

I disagree somewhat with the concept that Colt is a "3rd string QB". Such a player is not usually an expected future starter. Compare him to Ratliff, for instance.

Now compare him to, I was going to say last year's 3rd stringer, better compare him to any starter we had last year, hell the last three years.

This year, he compares fairly well with Wallace, who was not the designated starter going in. Most have agreed he is playing much better than they expected.

He needs time, sure. How much, exactly? No one knows, do they? Time is a wonderful thing to have. THIS YEAR, we have time. Next year, we will either have a 2nd year starter, plus two or three more talented players on O and D, or a bright, shiny, new #1 pick at QB and maybe just one other hole plugged. Plus large expectations of getting into the hunt.

He's played two top D's, got good production with two turnovers and lost, got low production with no turnovers and won, this week gives us a 2 out of 3.

I have spent the last 3 seasons watching total failure to pick our future QB, including massive waste of high draft picks. Playing Colt is about as likely to win as anybody else we got. We CAN'T follow the original plan, we HAVE to play him. He has looked ready to go so far.
