BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns have waived running back James Davis and replaced him with running back Thomas Clayton off the New England practice squad. The news was first reported by FoxSports.com. 0Share 14 Comments Like Jerome Harrison before him, Davis has not been happy with his lack of playing time. He wrote on his Twitter account, "Finally was granted with my wish." Davis was not active for the game in New Orleans on Sunday. link

Davis must have been deep in Mangini's doghouse.
Does anyone know anything about Clayton? Does he have some speed or is he more of a plodder?

Apparently a guy off the Patriots practice squad brings more. Like a good scouting tool.
I liked Davis as well. I wonder what has been going on behind the scenes.

Sounds to me like his attitude was bad. Too bad, I thought he had promise. Before the game I took a shot at Mangini for having him inactive, must not have bought into the "process".
I really am confounded by some of these move, but there seems to be a pattern with players that are not happy........see ya.

Yeah, a scouting tool is a good call.
As for Davis, I thought the guy wasn't bad. But, he couldn't stay healthy, and it seems like he just wasn't happy here.
And it seems like our philosophy is to have big thumper RBs, and Davis isn't.
Also, before people go crazy on Mangini for this, I believe it's Heckert who makes the personnel decisions.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I'll have to look it up to be sure, but I thought Clayton was on our practice squad not too long ago and was signed by the Pats.
My only issue with the move is that, once again, a roster move has made our team slower. Clayton is kind of a plodder like the other backs we have, if memory serves me at all. I could be wrong about that, but I think this guy is 215-220 lbs. Oh well...

From what I could find you are right about his size and speed.
I just noticed that Figures and Claton both came out of Kansas State together. Possibly both were scouted together?

Nice call on the scouting thing. That might be brilliant. I don't know the newbie though. Davis must have really ticked Gini or someone off. Looks like a pogrom for attitude purges. Odd these two going like this. But I liked what I saw in Bell. Welcome aboard, you are an official Brown.

Forced hand...again...you really think Mike Bell is better than Harrison and Clayton than Davis? If Mangini won't play em, then the GM has to move them...whatever happened to "my office is always open"?
So we now have Bell and this Clayton guy behind Hillis, yay....but I'm sure they're great guys and can block too bad they won't be able to carry the running workload should Hillis go down....just stupid dismantlement of RB depth because of another Mangini "my way or highway" antics episode 77
and since when is it good to have skill position players who have similar styles? Isn't it better to have players on a unit that complement each other?

Exactly when did Davis ever do anything for the team? What good games did he have? My memory isn't so great, so refresh it for me. Of what benefit was he to the team?
Thanks.

Thought Davis had some potential... but he was a late round pick with only what? 24 yards? I'm fine with him being waived if he didn't want to be here.

Exactly.
Davis looked slow every time he got a shot on the field.
I don't think that he played on any of the special teams.
No big loss.

When was he given a shot to show what he could do?
If you are going to draft him and we have a need at RB, why not play him and see what he does in game conditions?

Much ado about a third string running back drafted in the 6th round. If Hardesty had not gotten hurt, Davis would have been sent packing long ago.
He'll probably wind up on someone's practice squad or the UFL. Seems like a good kid with durability issues. That's the book on James Davis.

Django man that axe has got to be turnin into just a nub, you keep grindin it away...
Mike Bell in 44 games...371 carries 1404 yards 3.8 ypc 14 tds...also 27 catches 196 yds and 0 tds and 5 total fumbles 3 lost
Jerome Harrison 51 Games...302 carries 1401 yards 4.6 ypc 6 tds...61 catches 444 yds 3 tds...4 total fumbles 3 lost.
Looks like a wash to me...
Thomas Clayton 0 Stats...
James Davis 6 games...13 carries 24 yds 1.8 ypc and 0 tds...4 catches 5 yds 0 tds...0 fumbles...
looks like generally a wash as well...
My way or the highway? maybe...I'm missing the point of how thats a bad thing? Harrison and Davis have contributed 0 this year...you really think that they are going to be more productive than Hillis? you really think that if we went with Harrison and Davis as our 1-2 punch itd be more productive than Hillis and Bell?
Do you think that Braylon would be successful here? I'll argue that KW2 couldve still been successful here...but he has what...2-4 years before his knees are done? he's not going to be successful much longer. MoMass could be very good for us if we give him some help.
Everyone that Mangini has "hardballed" hasnt done anything since or wouldnt have been successful here anyway KW2 notwithstanding...which, are we better off with KW2? or Moore/Watson?
We're better now...period

going into a possible lock-out season wouldn't dumping unhappy players that will hold out or not come back make sense?

Perhaps but not likely. The biggest reason I'm sure is that they are both unhappy as well as non-contributing. May as well not be on the roster, and overturning stones may lead to a contributing player.

Wasted 6th round pick...I'd like to look back and see how many 6th rounders from that exact draft are still on thier original drafted teams roster. I'd bet no more than 5 out of probebly 40 picks, some teams have 2 or more 6th round picks.

A wash? Are you serious? Almost a yd more per attempt is not a wash, it's a world
Also, I' m no Harrison homer...he is/was was he is...a nice change of pace back with HR ability, imho a good complement to Hillis...I'm not saying we gave away a workhorse RB but what irks me most about this is the fact that Harrison saved Mangini's job last year along with Cribbs and dude just let's him rot, again, on the bench....how's this for a message?....zero loyalty. He never gave him a real chance this year after Harrison did what he did last season for him....just another Mangini "preach TEAM, then go all EGO"...the biggest locker room cancer is Mangini himself...are we going to release/trade every player he can't manage? How many already and it's not that they were collecting DUIs or stuff like that...it's gotten to a point where it's clear that HE is the problem

Hmmmm, uh, he showed some flashes in the second half of some preseason games?
Didn't do much, obviously something going on in the background. How many times does this team release someone who had actually done little of real value and this board is filled with doom and gloom over letting the future pro bowler go? Ben Gay. Qasim Mitchell. Martin Rucker. Minter. Carey. Francies. I know there are more. Any of these guys haunt us?

More TDs in less games. I'm good with that. I mean, as long as we're going to use selected stats and all. Jerome Harrison never got it in gear after last year. I think that he might be what Chris Palmer once called Jamel White ... a plodder ........ a guy who can make people miss in the cold and slop, but who struggles in normal conditions. We all hoped that he would be something special ... and he seemed determined to prove people wrong .... until he got on the field. He's now been inactive for 2 weeks with the Eagles, and he might become a great weapon for the Eagles ..... but then again, he might become Brandon McDonald or Brady Quinn ...... over-rated talents who cannot find the field despite protests by some posters about what big mistakes we made letting them go.

I liked davis and wanted to draft him when we were talking draft prospects, but who really cares the guy is gone.
First, he's done little. It looks like he was a problem child wanting play time.
And most important, we have identified with the power running game. We have Hillis....power guy. Bell, power guy...now Clayton who is more a straight line, between the tackles runner.
It's pretty evident that is what Mangini and Heckert want.
Forget change of pace. Keep hammering the other team no matter who you have in the backfield.
Sounds like a good plan to me. Homeruns are great. The problem is you can't dial one up when needed and it is hard to guess when they will come. Hard driving, 3-4 yard runs are more with-in a teams control. You can dial those up with the reasonable expectation you will get one.

Good stats, King! We didn't trade down in this deal. A bunch of end zone production. Based on nothing but supposition, based on observed and stated stuff, A) Heckert must have felt a real need to move him, and B) we have been trying to carry this guy, and he has not (or chosen not to) develop enough for games. We played him and ran him several games back, and it was next door to nothing. Davis can't give us anything approaching Hillis. Maybe Bell can if that is the type of presence in the run we want. What I have seen is a flash here or there in pre's, but a bunch of nothing special piled on that. Maybe we mopping up the lockerroom? A little poison in your waterhole goes a long way. I would rather have this than the Brayin' kind of issues. So he ends up in the Great WHite North or somesuch, eh? Good luck. Learn from it.

not sure why there is any reason to be alarmed over this move. He wasn't being used.. and as Peen pointed out, we sure seem to be going in a different direction with all smash mouth guys..
Good luck JD..

If he hasn't gotten on the field on Sundays, it's because he hasn't shown the ability during the week. He's gotten plenty of opportunity to show that. Honestly, I find it ludicrous that anyone would actually believe Mangini wouldn't play guys that give this team the best chance to win.
And I have no problem loading up our backfield with smashmouth runners. The "homerun" is overrated. I'd rather demoralize them with a continuous feed of 5-15 yards carries and stay away from negative plays.

My only issue with the move is that, once again, a roster move has made our team slower. Clayton is kind of a plodder like the other backs we have, if memory serves me at all. I could be wrong about that, but I think this guy is 215-220 lbs. Oh well...
While couldn't see the field, this again proves my point about the Browns not understanding how to use a smaller back. And it shows they will not draft one as long as Mangini is the coach.
