Savage made 2 moves that really sealed his fate.

1) He traded for Brady Quinn, and Quinn did not prove himself to be a franchise QB

2) He traded a #2 for Corey Williams. (Who I actually thought would be effective in our defense, so what do I know?)

Except for Thomas and a few late rounders, his drafting was unspectacular. Edwards had 1 great year, and a bunch of sub-par years. Quinn is 3rd string in Denver.
We have no one left from 2005. We have Vickers left from 2006. (with DQ on IR) 2007 brought us Joe Thpmas, but that was a no brainer. I think that 90% of Browns fans would have made that pick. He traded up for Quinn, and that proved to be a mistake. Wright appears to be a decent #2 CB, who is struggling with the transition to covering the slot in nickel/dime situations. 2008 brought us Rubin.

So, from the 2005 through 2008 drafts, we have:
Jackson (IR)
Vickers
Thomas
Wright
Rubin

You can add Rogers to the list, as we got him for a #3. (Good deal for a 3)

That ain't much for 4 drafts.

Unfortunately, 2009 isn't looking great. We have Mack, Massaquoi, Robiske, and Maiava (IR) left from that draft. That's probably why we have a real, solid personnel type in place now. That way the coach can coach, and the personnel guys can work personnel.

I will say one thing that is definitely different. Savage gave regular press conferences and such. I don't think that Heckert has given one since the draft .. at least that I can remember. Mangini is definitely the public "face" of the franchise right now.

Yeah, he was horrible...because all 5th rounders do more in this league than McDonald...and getting Rogers for a 3rd and Bodden was horrible too...he also drafted guys like Rubin and Vickers in the 6th...what a hack, we were much better off with Mangini/Kokinis the year after

and Quinn, Wright, Rucker, Bell, Hubbard, Hall, Wimbley, Wilson, Williams, Sowells, Minter, Oshinowo, Purcell, Pittman, etc. Yep dude was a freakin' genius!

Also I didn't mention a thing about gini or kokinis, that's just your venomous hatred showing up again.

...Savage was an AVG drafter...and a bad to below AVG GM...look at NE drafts over those 4 years...2 of those draft classes were horrible as a whole..Wimbley is NO BUST...he was a mid-1st rounder and years after he's still a below AVG starter...that's not great, but there's much worse out there on mid 1st rounders....overall an AVG pick

On the 2nd day Savage was better than most....even the Williams deal wasn't bad imho...just take a look at that draft class, there was a reason we traded away our 1st day for vets...and I agree...even a 2nd +3rd + Bodden was a steal for Rogers....look at all the DL of that class from our 2nd round slot on and give me 1 better DL than C.Williams....there's none, sorry...and we needed DL badly

You know how hard it is to draft and get together a good DL? Imho even more difficult than OL.Savage had NOTHING to work with at DL, Jason Fisk anyone? Aging Roye? See? The moves for C.Williams and Rogers were great and even though Williams busted here...it was still worth it for Rogers alone...I'd give up my 2nd+3rd for a PB caliber DL anyday...and Rubin pick was huuuge, we will enjoy this pick for years....that 6th round back to back is typical for Savage...Rubin and Hubbard....hit and miss...that's AVG

Sure, he could have done better...but he wasn't bad on draft day...even though I wanted him gone too as a GM, I wished we had him on draft day in 2009 with all those picks

That said, yes...I'm happy we have Heckert now and think he's better overall

I actually think he might have survived those bad moves if it wasn't for 2 non-roster moves he made (I think Lerner would have given Phil a chance with his own hand-picked HC if these didn't happen)

1. The email to the fan after the Buffalo game.
2. The staph-infection cover-up on Winslow.

In both cases, it seemed like Phil lacked the professionalism to conduct himself as a leader of the Browns and Randy removed him from such responsibilities.
