Got one tonight. Hanging in the barn as I type. I've only bow hunted this year, and part of last year. This deer came in behind me. Of course, I never heard it, as you usually don't when bow hunting.

My head was getting heavy - and 15 ft. up in a tree isn't a good place to fall asleep, so I shook my head, looked around behind me, and there she was. Standing. Not a big one, but right behind me - maybe 15 ft. I waited about 15 minutes - debating myself. "Take it?. It's small. Should I stand up and try? Will I scare it away? Will IT scare others away? Just sit tight and wait for others to come? What if this one scares the others away?"......on and on.

By this time, she was laying down. Screw it - I'm going to try - if I scare it, there's plenty of time for others to come. If I hit it, it's a lot easier to track them in daylight as opposed to total darkness. I stood, turned, aimed, FWAPPP. The thing never even stood up.

Did what had to be done, stopped to get ice on the way home. And it's hanging.

Now, I only tell you that so I can tell you this. Last night - about 20 yds. away - a buck came in. I stood, waited. And took the shot - I thought about 20 yds. Guy took off like a bat out of hell. Went only 20 ft. though. And I remember thinking "Oh yeah, if you only ran 20 ft. and stopped that was a heck of a shot. Go on, fall down........come on now. Fall over. Let's not stretch this out guy. Fall down".

Then the deer started eating. I totally missed him. Then, he meanders around to my other side. What a dumb deer I thought. He's giving me a second shot. Closer. And I took it.

And missed. Low. He ran about 10 ft., stopped, and circled around again. What a dumb deer. I didn't shoot again though.

And I guarantee you he went and told all his friends "what a dumb hunter - I gave him 2 shots and he missed me both times and chickened out on the third shot."

I only had 1 arrow left, and I knew I wasn't doing something right. (turns out I misjudged the distance. I can judge if something is 250 yds or 275 yds when I'm on the ground. But apparently up in a tree the distance, even 20 yds, is deceiving to me. I learned yesterday - and it paid off today. (my wife went to cabela's this morning - I gave her a list of what I needed. Arrows, and broadheads, since I only had 1 b.h. left. She got home, I put the b.h.'s together, went out, got a deer!!!!)

I'm happy tonight!

Not sure how I'm related to deer - or how you are either. But I eat them. Just like I do beef - which comes from steers. At least the meat we eat on a regular basis isn't full of hormones, steroids, and chemicals. (that's not to say we don't eat burgers by the way)

Some don't like it (hunting), some don't care for it, a few love to do it. I'm in the "few" that love to do it - plus, a $15 tag - and we'll get how many pounds of meat out of it?

Congrats! That's great. If you have any venison jerkey to spare, let me know.

I took it that way, too. Not you - but a lot of people think it's cruel. And when you get down to brass tacks, it is. Killing something - well, that's cruel.

Just like killing chickens is cruel. Just like killing cattle is cruel. Just like fishing is cruel. Bottom line? We eat meat. Until they find a way to grow meat in a garden.........well......

I will say, I prefer gun hunting deer. The death is much quicker. Almost instantly. (at least the way I hunt - I don't fire off shots just because I see a deer. If I don't have a good kill shot - I don't take it - gun hunting that is). 2 weeks ago I hit a deer, but we couldn't find it. Today, next year, in 10 years, I'll still hate that. That was the only time I've ever shot and not brought a deer back.

You like jalapenos? Cause I don't. And my friend gave us a pack of jalapeno/venison sticks. And so did my neighbor. I don't like jalapenos. There yours if you come get them.

Awesome! Always love the first kill. Can't wait to get up there this year. Hoping to be able to make the trip in another month. Money's tight, but gotta go.

Congratulations on the first bow kill Arch! Never dropped one with a bow myself, still looking for that elusive first kill. Plenty with my guns, just not enough time with me being out of state.

Ya, the angle makes the judging of distance difficult.

Congrats.

I saw an interesting video years ago where in slow-mo they showed how a deer instinctively drops down at the sound of an arrow being released, causing you to overshoot. The error is magnified when shooting from a tree stand.

I don't know quite exactly what I got into, or where, but when I got done dressing it last night, my forearms itched terribly. So I itched them. Maybe for 5 minutes. Then I thought "this isn't just an itch - this is something else." I looked and saw bumps on the underside of my fore arms. (I pulled my sleeves up when I dressed the deer).

So I quit itching.

About the time I was posting last night, my eye felt like it had something in it. And it puffed up. Turned red. All swollen - almost shut. The itching had stopped on my arms by this time.

My eye is a little better today, but it's still puffy. I look like Rocky before he got his skin slit right below the eye. My upper eyelid is still swollen also.

Any ideas?

Congrats on the bow kill. I have never gotten a deer with a bow (crossbow). Have released a couple bolts, but no hits.

I'm allergic as hell to deer. I got my first deer when I was 16. My dad dressed it, but I drug it out of the woods, and had one crazy allergy attack. It is not just sneezing - my skin gets blotchy and bumps form around exposed areas.

Take an allergy pill and call me in the morning...

I've drug a fair number of deer. Dressed them. Skinned them, boned them, processed them. Never had any problems. Until last night. The itching and bumps on my forearms was bad - for about an hour and a half or so. But my kept getting worse.

I had to have come in contact with something I guess. I have benedryl, but it says not to take it with alcohol. And I'm having a beer right now.

Just couldn't do it tonight. Doe, young doe, came in behind me. I got ready - drew, had it in my sights..............then it walked at an angle where I couldn't shoot it. Trees, and branches, in my way. I just watched it. And the thing bedded down almost below me. I just watched it.

Nature is a great thing. A phenomenal thing. Awesome night.
