I heard a report on NPR this am that 18,000 children die each day on this planet from starvation and malnutrition.....yet all we see on American news shows(the TV variety) is endless BS about anna nichole and britney....our country..or at least it's new organizations are train wreck obsessed. 18,000 children a day and yet oprah opens a "leadership academy" in South Africa and preens like a newly canonized saint. Something is very wrong with all that.

We throw tons and tons of money at some of these countries. The money never gets to where it's supposed to go. The dictator's of many of these countries starve and torture their own people. If we go in and kill and capture these dictator's to "free" their people....the same people crying about the starving people would be crying and outraged at that.
Unfortunately we cannot save the world, and whether we talk about celebrities or vibrators or starving children, there are people who cannot be saved.

That is why I don't watch that stuff. The PBS News Hours does a fairly good job of covering the news.....all of the networks have gone into the News Show business.
The BBC is good to watch...especially for unbiased reports about US policy and such.
Stick to PBS and the like and forget the ratings channels....it is a bunch of garbage shaped by the network owners/managers who really have no interest in presenting unbiased reporting.
To think we used to think TASS piled on the propaganda.
We have become a nation of numbskulls.

I've thought the same thing. And it's girls-only, isn't it?
I think the whole Anna Nicole and Britney type of thing is what sells in America. People love to hear about other people's dirty laundry, especially when they're celebrities. Why do you think Springer has always has such high ratings?

It would seem so but she's free to give her money anywhere she sees fit...
Now, if you want to rail against our media, have at it, I'm right there with you... have you noticed that no cute blonde haired blue eyed girls have gone missing lately? We'd know because the news would be all over it. To hell with the thousands of other people who have gone missing.
Now, if you want to rail against what should or shouldn't be done for these 3rd world countries with starving children, I pretty much agree with Jules.

Wow..
Okay tell me this.. what religion or faith do I profess? I don't believe I have ever revealed that on this board, nor do I generally discuss religion on this board and my comments on politics are wayyyy more restrained than they used to be on this or any other board.
I'm fine yes, but are you sure I am a Christian?
And what on earth would that have to do with anything?

Now then.. if you really want to put your clicks where your mouth is... Go to this website www.thehungersite.com. I found it pretty easy by typing in "donate to starving children" in my address bar. It really wasn't that hard. Here's the poop on the site: ABOUT THE HUNGER SITE Your click on the "Give Free Food" button funds food for the hungry, paid for by site sponsors whose ads appear after you click and provided to people in need around the world through the efforts of Mercy Corps and America's Second Harvest. So.. Autumn, yes, you too can make a difference in the lives of starving and needy children each and every day just by clicking.. no purchase neccesary And best of all, you don't have to be sarcastic or rude to people that point out to you that Oprah or anyone else can spend their cash the way they wish.

Hating on the media? That's a favorite pasttime of mine. It's become about entertainment, not the news. Depending on whether you're watching CNN, MSNBC, network news, or FOX you get an entirely different view on the same event. Different events are portrayed by the media using code words. On FOX you might see something like: Americans and Iraqi forces kill 75 terrorists. On CNN you'll see: 10 GIs killed in clash with Sunni insurgents. The truth they portray is the truth they want you to believe. It's subjective objectivity. There are only 2 allowable viewpoints by the media's standpoint and they are neoconservatism and socialism.
Going along with children dying of starvation is what's happening in the Sudan. It's practically genocide. One culture is being wiped out by another and no one is reporting it or doing anything about it. The same thing happened to a much lesser extent in the former Yugoslavia and we went to war over it. The reason is that the places these "problems" are occuring are in third world countries where the majority of the industrialized world carries misconceived stereotypes.
About Oprah and Britney it's again about entertainment. They want to report the news in a way that will keep viewers coming back. This requires them to focus on bizarre stories and ignore little problems like genocide or diseases. Watch the code words and the adjectives the major outlets use just in the titles of their stories. They are obviously either for entertainment or to try and subtly persuade people into a particular viewpoint. If you want the least biased news source you can find try PBS or Rueters and the AP. There's still an entertainment factor in these though as Rueters and the AP are often the one's supplying these stupid Trump vs. Rosie stories to the major outlets.

j/c. I've felt this way for a long time. This is why most American's put a bad taste in my mouth. Our society is focused too much on things that just DON'T MATTER in the big picture. You're right about that. One example is when Pres. Ford passed away.... you didn't hear much about that at all. Just whatever stupidassed celebrity died that same week.

This is pretty much why I watch ZERO television these days. You get like a half hour of news and then an hour of "Celebrety reports". And even that half hour of news is full of celebrety crap. I watch sports, mythbusters and that's about it.

But is it really "most Americans"? Not in my opinion. It may be what the media talks about, that doesn't mean most people in this country care about it. I never watch celebrity news or pay much attention at all to any of it. I didn't know what Anna Nicole Smith looked like until I saw her picture after she died. I kind of remember the story of her and some old guy, but that's it. So, I certainly don't care about the news on her now.

Well if it's not "most" then somebody is missing the boat. Those in the media business will put on what people want to watch.... so who is at fault? If "most" Americans were clamouring for REAL NEWS then somebody would put it on... so I just don't know who to blame...

That's a good point. Maybe I'm just mad at the media. But enough people have to watch that stuff for them to keep so much of it on tv. Excl, most of our news the past few weeks is weather... We have our 5-10 murders, a few roberies, a couple traffic wrecks for good measure, and 25 minutes of "special reports" on freezing fog, ice, snow.... etc....

It's not "most americans" that they worry about DC, it's "most americans by certain demographics for a given time slot" that they are worried about. They pander to the largest viewing demographic possible because they realize that in the days of cable programming we are in where HBO has Rome & The Sopranos, they can no longer compete with the numbers they used to garner... so they've narrowed their focus.
