Link Browns LB Wimbley Voids Final Year Of Contract Written by: ¦ 2/22/2007 Source: Not only did Cleveland Browns first-round pick OLB Kamerion Wimbley have a solid rookie season, he lead the team in sacks (11). By doing so and meeting minimum play time requirements in his contract, a league source pointed out to scout.com and theobr.com that he was able to void the final year of his six-year deal. So Wimbley now has four years left on his contract. Wimbley also received a $100,000 bonus for high sack total. I don't know how credible this is, but I saw it posted on Browns Chat and figured I'd post it over here.

If its true, good for him. I don't mind this info one bit. Reward his play with the reduction of the contract. Let him become a star and we can sign him longterm sooner.
This is a lot better situation than we usually have.

Exactly!
I was just thinking the other day that I wouldn't want to have to pay a franchise fee someday but it will be nice to finally have players worthy of that designation.
I don't think he made a bad move, he earned it!!!

I agree. It's definitely a smart move on his part. Either:
1. He continues to play good, the browns improve, and he stays by signing long term. or,
2. He continues to play good, the browns continue to struggle, and he is able to leave.
It's a good move on his part, but lets hope its option 1 and not 2.

I don't mind this at all.
I'm just glad we finally have someone who was able to do this.

As everyone has said, there is no problem with this.
And if Wimbley were to ever leave the Browns, he's one of those players I will still root for.

How much do you want to bet if this was Braylon right now people would be on the opposite side of the spectreum and calling him greedy before you guys start telling me how he didn't produce blahblah...give me a break...the guy came back from a injury 5-6 games sooner than expected and put up good not great numbers....that with QB being ify all 2nd half of the season....do i think he deserves a raise? hell no do i think KW does? sure but i would rather see him under contract as long as possible...we can't afford to lose a playmaker....this is a good move for him...and not so good for the FO

Honestly, I think you're wrong.
Most on here are smart enough to evaluate this as a business decision and to put themselves in the player's place whether that be Braylon or Kamerion. I think you'd see the same replies.
This isn't bad for the Browns either as long as they are willing to step up to the plate and pay the guy when the time comes. I happen to think they will, especially if he becomes the player everyone thinks he will be.

Which means it will be 3 years from now not 4 when we will negotiate with him for a contract extention...That might be a blessing in disguise.
And what a relief it will be to finally be rewarding a 1st round draft pick with a 2nd contract. Instead of those outrageous FA contracts we got to dish out to have avg. talent play for us!
Can't wait to pay through the nose on this one!!! Its about Time!!!

You said it yourself - BE didn't produce... if he was in the position to void his last year (which would have meant he had a spectacular year) I'd be fine with that as well.

First, I thought this was a Wimbley thread and not about B.E.? Second, B.E. did not produce enough to void his final year....so....it's a moot point. If he had produced that well, I seriously doubt if very many fans would be so down on him. Finally, all championship calibur teams have big name, big paid players, a championship team needs these type of players, otherwise, you struggle in mediocrity like we have for so long and you never improve.

This is great. Wouldn't it be great if all our first-rounders from the last several years turned out so well? I sure hope Savage can pick well two years in a row.

No doubt about it, this majorly sucks for us in a fiscal sense, but I'm happier than hell that we have a draft pick that stepped up so high as a rookie.
Well done Kamerion, you've earned it... and please don't hold us to the fire too badly 3 years from now when we start negotiating your new deal.

I really don't mind this...
I'm just thankful that 2 years in a row, our 1st Round Draft Pick has actually done something productive....
That's kinda pathetic since being back in the league for 8 years now..

ummmm... well... sort of... BE has had a decent career so far... maybe you meant two out of three with the last year Winslow had
But i agree... our last three 1st rounders have done a hell of a lot better than the first 5 combined.

I know what the "headline says" but maybe you ought to read the "content of the article". Now I could be off base here, but from what I gathered, his contract was *constructed* in a manner that IF he reached certain incentives, the final year of the contract would be voided.
Not that he "elected or chose" to void the last year of his contract. Pretty much everyone KNOWS that your first big FA signing or franchise tag,is a players BIG PAYDAY in his career. So if he met certain obligations and incentives,it could have very easily have been written into his contract that by meeting these incentives,it would void the last year of his contract.
So before you "jump to conclusions" here,we may wish to find out a few more details. Because I think you will find it was a "mutual agreement" that was written into his contract.
Leon probably had a similar clause, but just didn't produce the goods, accept from a verbal standpoint.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I guess i should have mentioned that by saying if this was BE....meaning if he ALSO produced like KW did...and IF his contract had a smililar claws in it...then people would have STILL called him greedy!!!!
That is what i meant by it....there....
I think KWs claws isn't greedy or selfish....and if BE had one i would think the same.....i just think lot of people on this board wouldn't think the same and it sounds like u r one of them cuz ur calling him leon heh....but somethin tells me u won't admit it....thats okay

You are probably right....i think that would have saved him a ton of negative light....no room to F up when ur drafted that high....it's a cold cold biznez NFL iz....
I remember going this kids a fool many times this season...but i don't think he is as bad as people on the board make him out to be....lets jus hope he does more talking with his plays next year...

I just don't like him being a big mouthed distraction. It's nothing other than that. If he shuts up and starts producing more? I'll be a HUGE supporter. But as long as he keeps running his mouth and not backing it up on the field,I'll keep running mine. KW put his "play" out loud and clear, not his mouth. That's showing talent and class. I'm sorry you can't see the difference there. Now if Leon does the same? I'll call him Braylon.

The difference is that Wimbley produced, didn't hold on on his contract, and hasn't opened his mouth in the form of a distraction.

"This board" is a little vague since it was "one poster" who made a "broad, wild accusation" towards others that turned the tide. Blame is fine as long as it's placed where it belongs. "This board" simply responded to accusations set forth upon them. So why not place the blame where it belongs instead of on "this board"?

Why, because thats the way I felt i would repond, your allowed your view and your opinon how to write things, so am I, Those people I'm talking about know who they are with me saying names and waving flags, not my style, what is said on this board dosent bother me, my ego dosent need pumped up on a message board. no big deal, I appriciate your comments, but thats how i see it.

I bet not, cause if BE produced like an pro-bowler, people would over look the trash talking, because he would be backing it up on the field, and the sideline incident probably would never have happened if he was producing big numbers because we would probably had a few more wins.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

If BE had 110 receptions, 1,400 yards, and 11TDs in 2006 he would be permitted to slap elderly people and use a Hummer to run down small children. By and large, the ONLY thing fans care about is on field production. If BE were putting up big numbers and fighting on the sidelines, fans would say, "He is just showing how fiery of a leader he is. He cares. Don't you want guys that care?"
Wimbley is the Browns first 1st round pick to stay healthy and productive through his entire rookie campaign since... 2005 BE ACL 2004 K2 ACL 2003 Faine ugh... ? What was his injury that year? 2002 William Green barely set foot on the field until mid season 2001 Gerrard Warren? Sigh... 2000 Courtney Brown (ow, my liver) 1999 Tim Couch (Where did that semi-truck come from?)
I guess William Green was the last really productive rookie to finish a season not on IR.

Your memory is off. He was on the field pretty much the whole season. There's a reason you don't remember the first half, though.

This really shouldn't surprise anybody who watched the "Best of the Browns: Rookie inebackers" video, where he made a comment about how he, DQ, and Leon (the real Leon) were going to work hard and continue to improve "while (they're) in Cleveland..."

I hear you...and that is exactly what i said in the FIRST reply when i made...."don't give me the o if BE was productive BS" but in the end we can't ask people to be real fans of players in this day and age w/o them being ALL stars on the field.....i'm not a michigan fan...so i really don't care anymore....i jus didn't think my comment would get this much play in this thread....
Lets focus on good for once.....WIMBLEY!
