Do the Browns have a shot at the playoffs? Are the Browns posing themselves for a late season run? I think this coming Sunday will tell us.

The Browns Schedule the Rest of the way out
Jets (6-2) at home
Jacksonville (4-4) on the road
Carolina (1-7) at home
Miami (4-4) on the road
Buffalo (0-8) on the road
Cincy (2-5) on the road
Baltimore (6-2) at home
Pittsburgh (5-2) at home

If the Browns can beat the Jets, our schedule is favorable enough for us to have a shot at getting in.

The Steelers Still have to plays us and Baltimore(We get Pittsburgh in our house late, we also get Baltimore here in cleveland)

Baltimore still has to play us and the Steelers.

We beat the Jets, the Jets still have to play the Patriots.

If the Steelers lose tonight, that would be two in a row and they will have a ticked off Patriots team that could easily lead to a 3 game slide and eventual collapse.

We are far from out of the playoff mix..in fact were very much in it as long as we keep winning...the Browns are "getting hot" LATE and are in a position to very much make a late season run...If we can win 6 out of our last 8 or perhaps somehow get rolling and win 7 of our last 8..we will get into the playoffs...

stranger things have happend...the Patriots of 2001 racked off a bunch of wins late....its not too late for us...the Ravens and Steelers have some "doozies" ahead of them on the schedule...if we can beat the Jets i think we have a much better then fair chance...the Jets still got the Pats.

we are very much IN THE MIX folks...we beat the Jets we are for sure in the mix then....ahh wouldn't it be nice to get into the AFC Divisional Playoffs..where anything can and usually does happen?

I think we can get to 9 wins.. 10 wins is a stretch and 11 wins is really hard to fathom at this point... I'm not going to get into who we should beat because right now we need to beat the Jets and take this one game at a time.. I do have to say that I can see us throwing up a stinker at some point... the Dolphins on the road looks like a reasonable place for us to play a poor game, especially if we have won 5 in a row..

It would be really sweet to win enough games that the stretch of division games at the end actually means something to us..

But for now.. beat the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets.

I think 9-7 finish is the absolute best this could finish if everyone stayed Healthy (by everyone I mean Hillis )
IMO 9-7 won't buy you the playoffs in the AFC. I think it's more likely we finish 6-10 to 8-8. But then again, I like prognosticating on the conservative side. That's the way I've been treating it so far this season and I've been wrong the last 2 games. I'm liking that trend.

Mathmatically, we could get to the playoffs.. it's not out of the question I guess

But to me, I'm still thinking 7 wins... And I'm not thinking a win will come this weekend against the jets..

If we beat the Jets in a similar fashion, then we'll have a clearer idea. We need to fire on all eight cylinders, executing in every phase of the game. I believe Colt needs to continue to develop, and get his WRs more involved each week to take some of the pressure off Hillis. But we're peaking at the right time, so that is a very good sign. We're heading in the right direction, which is much better than the alternative.

I'm saying we're in it until we eliminate ourselves.

We're starting to play to win. If we can play to win this week then who knows what is possible for the rest of this season.

I still don't see us making the playoffs after such a bad start.

However, this is the first time since our return that I've truly believed we were headin' in the right direction. I'm optimistic every year, but the logical part of me always knows we're still a long way away.

This ENTIRE coaching staff, Daboll included, deserves AT LEAST one more year to show improvement. We add a big time receiver in the draft, and I think we're a playoff team next year.

Outside of the obvious reasons, one thing standing in our way is that our division and conference are pretty tough.

Baltimore and Pittsburgh are good teams. We'd need a lot of help in order to win the division.

Therefore, we'd have to sneak in as a wild card. And there are a lot of good teams out there in the AFC.

Let's assume for the moment that the Steelers win tonight. Here's how the standings would look in the AFC:

AFC East
NY Jets (6-2)
NE Patriots (6-2)
Miami Dolphins (4-4)
Buffalo Bills (0-8)

AFC North
Baltimore Ravens (6-2)
Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2)
Cleveland Browns (3-5)
Cincinnati Bengals (2-6)

AFC South
Tennessee Titans (5-3)
Indianapolis Colts (5-3)
Jacksonville Jaguars (4-4)
Houston Texans (4-4)

AFC West
KC Chiefs (5-3)
Oakland Raiders (5-4)
SD Chargers (4-5)
Denver Broncos (2-6)

So, there are currently 12 other AFC teams with better records than us. Take away 4 (for division winners) and you now only have 2 other wild card spots.

So, unless we win the division (which is going to be hard considering we already have 1 loss against the Ravens and Steelers), we not only need to dominate the rest of this season, but we need a lot of other teams to falter, too.

Agreed. We'll hit a rough patch down the stretch. As long as Mangini doesn't lose the team or start getting blown out we pretty much have to ride this torpedo for another year at least. This team is headed in the right direction. It would be foolish to start calling for a house-cleaning now. No way do we make the playoffs this year unless everyone else in the conference just melts down and hands it to us on a silver platter.

Making the plaoffs IS A STRETCH. I would love it. But I'll be happy if they just keep playing like this.

Even a 9-7 record would require a 6-2 finish. 9-7 ain't gonna cut it, and if it does get close to a WC, we'd probably lose the tiebreak.

I'm always all about believing in "math-til-the-end," but I don't envision a shot at all unless we win these next 8. Now, that's a different topic.

We're probably going to have to win out (11-5) to make the playoffs. 10-6 might cut it, depending on how the season and tie-breakers sort out and such, but I doubt it. I'm especially looking at the Jets/Pats, Ravens/Steelers, and to a slightly lesser extent the Titans/Colts because 3 of those teams are going to be fighting hard for 2 wild card spots as it is.

But hey-- crazier things have happened. Keep the train rolling, beat the Jets, and go from there.

I typically cheer for the AFC over NFC... but I think I'm cheering for the NFC from here on out!!! I still don't think we have much of a shot... but as Lloyd said "so you're saying there's a chance......"

Pats have 29th D...we still will struggle against any team that can slow down Hillis, so PIT, BAL, MIA and NYJ are tough assignments...but those games will tell the story on McCoy

Right now the optimist in me says 4-4 in the last 8, losing to the above teams...leading to 7-9 which is not enough for me to justify keeping Mangini but we'll probably do so anyway, even at 6-10 I guess...we'll probably waste more time with him...I just hope I'm competely wrong and we win 5+ now convincingly...because I'm really tired of having to watch so-so coaches and QBs and that's what I'm staring at if we go 3-5 or 4-4 from here on out

so if we go from 4 wins, to 5 wins, to 7 wins and we're competitive in EVERY game you won't be happy with EM? I just don't get it...

I'm still not sold on this coaching staff... but we've been competitive and have won two big games... I'll wait for my judgement until the end of the season, btu right now I'm going to enjoy the direction it looks like we're going.

Pats were good against the run before they played us. Therefore, they should have been a team that could slow down Hillis (even after we killed them on the ground this past week they are still #15 in rush defense at 4.1 YPC).

The Pats problems on D have been defending the pass. We only had 175 yards on them in the air but the above 9YPA is something that you should be touting. You crucified Colt for having a low YPA against Pitt, please give him credit when he has a high one as well.

j/c..

I don't think we will make the playoffs, but anything is possible.

I actually think we beat the Jets this week though, but it won't be easy. Stopping Holmes and Braylon is gonna be a tough task, not to mention that L.T. is pretty hot right now.

To say the least, this is grossly premature.

However, third time's a charm.... if we see what we've seen the last two games again against the Jets, then I think talk of Playoff potential will absolutely be warranted.

I don't agree there

The Ravens couldn't stop Peyton Hillis...remeber he had 144 yards rushing on 22 carries...Hillis was NOT 100% against the Steelers...he most likely will be next time we play them.

I think Hillis is probably the best back in the NFL right now and no one is going to stop him pretty much...nobody...he will have 125+ yards against the Steelers later in the year..they won't be able to stop him when he is healthy either....

Not to mention the addition of Billy Yates has really helped our OL...this kid has played lights out....this team SHOULD NOT touch this OL..the right side of Yates+ Womack has been the best I have seen the right side all year...Yates keeps playing like this sign the kid..he is young...

Peyton Hillis will have success running against the Jets I assure you..the Jets are not used to tackling a guy like him..in fact Hillis had his coming out game against the Jets when he was with Denver....Hillis ran over them then too and he will do it again sunday.

Hillis is Jerome Bettis with better speed and better hands catching the ball...right now..I don't there is a team in the league that can stop him...as long as our OL with Yates and Vickers keep opening holes for him forget about it.

The Jets don't have Kris Jenkins no more...dude is done for the year..the holes will be there for Hillis....I just wonder how good Revis is in run support...because he is going to see Hillis trucking at him with a head of steam a few times in this game...

The last time we all felt this way was after we destroyed the Giants after they won the Super Bowl. Take it easy everyone. We're in last place in our division half way through the season. Focus on the Jets.

Good advice, however, when we did that to the Giants, we were mired in a losing streak. It wasn't the second game in row of putting down a beating on one of the best teams in the league.

The excitement is definitely warranted, we're seeing REAL Quality football from a Browns team
I'm not seeing this as the Smoke-n-Mirrors "quality" football that we saw in '07 with Anderson. That was flukey, WR's bailing out a bad QB... this is solid defense, hardcore physical, smart, disciplined, beat you down football that we're seeing.

This is where you start to look more like a hater than a skeptic.. every offense struggles against teams that can shut down the run and you just listed the #4, 6, 9, and 13 defenses in the NFL.... so yes, I doubt we get into the 30s against these teams or move the ball up and down the field like we did yesterday, very few people do..... so if you want us all to admit we aren't the Colts and we NEED a running game, I'll be the first to step up and say that is a fact, we have a rookie QB and marginal WR talent at best.. We NEED to be able to run the football to do well and open up other things... I have no idea how we will fare if some team shuts down our running game and we have to throw it 35-40 times to win... I have no idea how that will go... With that said, these games will NOT "tell the story" on McCoy other than to give us a clearer picture right now where he is in his development which is already considered by almost everybody to be well ahead of where they thought it would be.. and I know you discount most of what he did against the Steelers the first time but he played fairly well against them already.

If we get to 7-9 after our slow start I don't think there is any doubt Mangini is back and he should be... I will say that this is the last time, in my opinion, that he gets to have the slow start then play catch up.... I'm also thinking that if we beat the Chiefs and beat the Bucs then lose close games to the Saints and Pats you would have a different opinion of where we are.

Ok, maybe it will "not tell the story", I was not saying "verdict" or anything, it's still his rookie year....but Colt was advertised as heady QB that can manage games, he was SUPPOSED to be ahead of the rookie curve on that being a SR that played 4 full seasons at Texas, where he had problems playing catch up in meaningful games btw....it was also said that he has less "ceiling", basically a "what you see is what you get"- QB...he has limitations and I doubt he'll overcome them....time will tell and I sure won't forget this discussion...as I said I hoep he pans out...as of right now I see worst case a "Ratliff"-type player, best case a "Garcia" but most probably he'll top out as an overachieving "heady gamer" a la Fitzpatrick...that's the kind of QB I'm seeing right now....that said, I think he can be a valuable backup, that's more than I really expected and thus I admit I was wrong before on him....hopefully more, since I don't want a 1st round QB in THIS draft

...and noting the obvious isn't hating...you gotta admit that our "style" lives and dies with Hillis being able to create 3rd and shorts constantly....the passing game feeds off of it and the D gets enough rest due to long drives....the Harrison trade could really backfire for Mangini if, fingers crossed, Hillis would go down...we're dominant at that, I see that too...but it's still VERY 1 dimensional

oh and one last thing: I disagree that he was "Fairly good" against PIT....0p in 55min when the game was still a game is NOT "fairly good"...it'S bad no matter who you play, no matter your status...it's bad....but he already got a free pass from me there being PIT and his 1st start, no real problem here...just couldn't believe what some of you "saw"...against NO he was really bad, lots of bad throws....against NE he was almost perfect managing the game (bye-week helped too I guess, he's a preparation-QB...he did not have to do more and that's perfectly ok but I just don't see how some can lable him "our franchise" QB on that, it's ridiculous imho)

It would be nice. But we have a lotof things need to happen in our favor. .500 would be great overall. Beyond that, maybe playoffs with luck and help and wins. The oh fer start will probably keep us out. Injuries could really hurt us. We can kill our own chemistry. But let's talk it up. I got my Believathon in high gear, and the Hope Generator (named it Hillis) is running round the clock. Go ahead! Make the playoffs! Make a liar out of me!

If he was supposed to be ahead of the curve then why were you and so many others so freaked out about having to play him? It was the doomsday situation, armageddon was upon us.. now all of the sudden he was supposed to be AHEAD of the curve? Really? I'm throwing the BS flag...

Quote:

You go ask as many NFL coaches and Offensive coordinators as you can find what kind of offense they want to have and to some degree they will all say they want to run the ball hard and throw controlled passes, they want to stay in good down and distance situations so they can open up the passing game... they want a lot of 3rd and shorts.. they want ball control... and they'd like to use that to take some shots down the field... You might find a very select few who will tell you they want an offense to run some other way but there won't be many.. and that's what we have now and all of the sudden its a bad thing... I don't get it.

Let me ask you a question.. what do these plays have in common?
(14:50) C.McCoy pass deep middle to M.Massaquoi to NE 42 for 21 yards (D.McCourty).
(Shotgun) C.McCoy pass short right to E.Moore pushed ob at NE 2 for 17 yards (D.McCourty).
(3:15) C.McCoy pass short middle to M.Massaquoi to NE 42 for 22 yards (J.Mayo).
(6:35) C.McCoy pass to B.Watson to NE 23 for 24 yards (K.Arrington, J.Sanders).
(7:19) C.McCoy pass deep right to B.Robiskie to NE 11 for 20 yards (K.Arrington).

It's not a trick, I'll tell you.. none of them happened on 3rd down.. none of them. Most of McCoys big pass plays occurred on first down.. We did have a big play or two on third down but the point is that when you can run the ball, it opens things up and you can do a lot more and that's exactly what we have been striving for and now we seem to be able to do it.. let's wait and see if a team shuts down our running game how we react before we proclaim that we CAN'T do it any other way.. Because it appears to me that in their effort to shut down our running game on first and second down we were able to exploit them for some pretty big plays...

But by the same token if Manning goes down, the Colts pass happy offense is in trouble.. if Brady goes down the Pats aren't winning 11 games with their back up this year... what if Brees goes down or Eli? They are all in some degree of trouble if they lose one guy.. so are we, its just our guy is the RB and not so much the QB.... whats the big deal? Gotta give credit to the Steelers for doing what they did without Ben..

Quote:

against NE he was almost perfect managing the game (bye-week helped too I guess, he's a preparation-QB...he did not have to do more

Then what is Peyton? Is he a preparation QB too because that is what he is given the most credit for... Which great QBs did not prepare well? Sorry this is one of those things that bugs me like when somebody says a guy is a "System QB".. who isn't a system QB? Could Peyton do well in a run and shoot? Is Vick ever going to be a great pure pocket passer? Every QB has strengths and designing a system to those strengths is what the staff is SUPPOSED TO DO.

Quote:

ok but I just don't see how some can lable him "our franchise" QB on that, it's ridiculous imho

It's ridiculous to label anybody a franchise anything after 2 or 3 games.. just as its ridiculous to label somebody "at best a backup" after the same time frame... The kid has something, I can't tell you what it is but he has something and I like all of the comparisons to other guys.. especially Fitzpatrick as his ceiling... he'll never make it to the Garcia level.. is that like the Mendoza line?

I'd take a Garcia-type QB talent; he went to three Pro Bowls and could win games.

I was never "freaked out" about having to play him...I just wasn't in the "start him over SW and JD" camp because I still think Wallace is the better QB right now...and I wanted to throw Ratliff at the Steelers because I didn't want him to get hurt too...both physically and mentally

Quote:

and I never called Fitzpatrick his ceiling, please don't start that crap too now of twisting what I post...you've been decent up until this, so keep it clean....Garcia is his ceiling IMHO, it's my opinion and you have every right to call it ridiculous same as I do on the "franchise-QB" screamers....the little difference is I give reasons for what I think....most others, like you, go with a gut feeling...I see a QB that KNOWS where to go with the ball presnap (heady) but not good enough on the important throws (the ones you need when you have to win games on your own...late in the game, opponent knows you have to pass)...he simply floats and underthrows his deep balls, sorry I've yet have to see a good thrown deep ball of McCoy in any game in the NFL, at best they were underthrowns jump balls with both the CB and WR waiting under it...that's what I see...oh and look, that's what was written in every scouting report on him:

Strengths
McCoy is a natural leader with high character. Played with a lot of intelligence in Texas’ system which he mastered. Was extremely productive. Possesses a quick release. Displays great accuracy in the short passing game and puts the ball in a position to set up his receivers for run after the catch. Has the foot-speed to avoid the rush and buy extra time.
Weaknesses
McCoy lacks a cannon for an arm. Can fit the ball into spots on intermediate routes at times but will struggle with the deep ball. Release point is a little low. Needs to improve his accuracy on long passes down the field and toward the sideline.

I was never "freaked out" about having to play him...I just wasn't in the "start him over SW and JD" camp because I still think Wallace is the better QB right now...and I wanted to throw Ratliff at the Steelers because I didn't want him to get hurt too...both physically and mentally

IMO, not wanting to start QB3 and wanting to instead start a QB that was on another teams PS since the preseason is freaking out about having to play QB3.

call it worry about him getting mentally and physically hurt, but it 'reads' the same. might not have been your intention, but that's how it reads.

We "could" cut into their 3 game leads by beating Pittsburgh and Baltimore on the backend, but we need a lot of other help.

This Jets win "could" be a tiebreaker later,....

We need to win out. The math doesn't say that -- yet -- but it's a long road, both optimistically AND glass-half-empty.

We are one of the most improved teams in the league. That's all most any of us here were looking for.

It is going to suck if somehow we win enough games and miss the playoffs because we couldn't hold leads against the Chiefs and Bucs.. that will suck.. of course hopefully that is something the team goes away from this year thinking about and comes out firing next year.. No, I'm not ready to start talking about next year.

KoB lets just take one game at a time and not get ahead of ourselfs here.

I realize your a born again Browns fan or a born again Mangini fan but this team has a long way to go yet. Yes they are making progress and yes they could run the table but thats a long ways away, and I think your setting yourself up for disappointment, and thats not a good thing.

Next thing you know you'll be hating on Mangini and I never thought I would say that, at least NOt about you ................
